As a long-term Ferrari owner, and previous 308 owner, I believe your car is a fantastic job. You started with a clean example of the worst 308 model from that dire period when emissions were more important than performance and have created from it a serious performance car with a stunning enhancement of the classic Pininfarina shape. As a fan who has watched this build from the start, I’d support whatever decision you made about selling. It’s absolutely worth $400,000 and it’s also a labor of love. Either way, I’ve had a blast watching this.
Mike said he put more than 5,000 man hours on this car. If you lowball the labor to $100 per hour, you've already reached half mil, without the car and parts.
Unfortunately I cant make the 12hr drive trip from Melb to Sydney this year. I hope you have an amazing trip and meet some amazing fans of your AMAZING 308. ANOTHER PIECE OF ADVICE WHEN STARTING A PROJECT.... DONT buy up lots of random parts like ECUs or blow off valves etc until you need them. So many people spend thousands on parts that end up sitting on a shelf then the project stalls
Watching what Mike builds, CNC machine is a lot of horsepower for what Mike currently does but I understand the step up in craftsmanship. I think a normal plasma cutter table will avoid all the sending parts and waiting to be cut from send cut send..Gingium fabricates in the spot after drawing up similar designs as Mike, things that need to be folded and boxed in welded.
Pocket NC. It's not the world's biggest, in fact it's the smallest, but considering what it does... it's worth at least an eye. So pop that name in TH-cam and see if it fits your bill. As someone who has a TON of manufacturing experience, I would highly recommended looking into buying a used VMC, not a cheaper office mill like the ones you mentioned. For a little more money you can find something with better accuracy, repeatability, and all around more capable. As much as a lot of us like to poo-poo them in the industry, even a used Haas VMC would be better than a light duty Tormach, especially when it comes to anything automotive related. I bought my lightly used one-owner Hurco for $1500 and I've been able to make short work machining materials like 17-4ph. For around $15k you could find something pretty nice with a CAT40 spindle and some actual cojones. 😊👍

Your advice on the build, and what it takes, is spot on. I built a tribute to the Camaro Gary Busey drove in the film The Gumball Rally. What it took to build is EXACTLY what you say it takes to build the car of your dreams. It took me 13.5 years from a unibody sitting on a homemade car dolly and two pickup loads of parts to completion (and it's badass). And + or - $60,000. In the beginning, I had thought about $30k. I REALLY appreciate what you do, what you're capable of, and love the videos. Oh, and I love this friggin Ferrari.
You car is a work of art and I’m surprised it only took two years. Even at $400K I think you underestimate cost of having a shop replicate your car. Up in NorCal, where the labor rates are higher I wouldn’t be surprised if the build would cost $600-$700K. I know it’s a different kettle of fish but look at what Singers are going for and the various restomods built in the UK.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
wish i was there for WTAC, friends with a few of the boys from hi-octane, would have loved to see this beast in the real world! Enjoy your time in Australia!
I'd say $400k you rebuild it better. And faster. I'd never penalize you for changing your life that would be silly of me. But Ultimately up to you. Sell or not. I'd still watch.
I look forward to seeing you and Home Built by Jeff, side by side. My two favorite builds for the last couple years now. I had to leave the states for an over-seas job in Naples italy, so I'm not gonna be able to come see you in Australia. Sorry Boss
0:03 in, subscribed and liked. Title was enough. You’re obviously a crazy man. Crazy man = solid content. I’ll grab my popcorn and wait. Crazy also equals unrivaled, it’s a complement.
HELLYEAHBR0THER!!!!! Stoked to see that this is finally happening for you dude! been following this build since probably episode 6 or so, ever since you were on the revival motoring podcast! Its been such a long and intense journey and I'm glad to see everything come together for you buddy! cant wait to see the video showing your experience and the other projects in the future
one more tip for any build is learn to have patience..... say sometimes you just paint something and it looks so awesome that you cant wait to put it back together, teaching yourself self restraint not to touch it until its completely dry might save you from having redo it.... i struggle with this one
I've been following the build since the start, never thought I'd be able to see it in person but I'll be road tripping my S52 E30 from Brisbane down to WTAC. Super keen and glad you didn't sell it.
I don’t know who your typical subscribers are but if you got an offer like that and you accepted it, that’s a huge success and something to be proud of.
Hi from Brisbane Australia. I won't be at the event but I hope you have the most amazing experience no matter how it pans out on the track. The Ferrari and your other builds are art work. All the best and hopefully you knock it out of the park or, as we say here, knock one for six!
Tormach CNC mills are super user friendly and easy for beginners. I’m a supervisor in the machine shop of a local college and we have 2 of them and I love using them. Now that being said, they’re not the biggest baddest machines ever made and you’ve got to help them out every once in awhile by taking smaller cuts than what you would need to do on an old school Bridgeport manual machine. But for the price point and ease of use, you can’t beat it for a CNC machine.
Your choice was correct. For car lovers, it's irresistible, isn't it? This business. The car that a boy who loves cars drew and dreamed of, the car he most wanted to drive... This is a treasure that will last a lifetime.
Besides the 11 year olds in the comments who have no idea how the world works, I don’t think a single person would have been mad if you got $400k for it.
I'll be at WTAC next week bright and early for bump in with my car. After watching the Ferrari build for so many years, I'm keen to see it in person and hopefully meet you as well.
4:03 not just that, it's also the fact that any defunct car (whatever the reason may be) gets snatched pretty fast for parts. Such is the life of old cars. I have at least 35 cars sitting on my brother's farm property that were bought specifically because i knew that one day, said parts inside will be rare as oxygen on the moon. Between him and i, and some friends, that small patch of the property is almost like an American junk yard, a pretty rare sight in Europe - mostly because none of us have the time to pull them apart and downsize to smaller bits and stackable shells, which is the correct way to do these things of things. But back on topic, for Ferrari, Lamborghini and other old cars, there's a big market where, when defunct cars appear, they get put on hold, and don't even hit the open market. The value potential is just that high. In some cases, the parts inside are more valuable as parts (summed up) than the car whole. It's not odd to see a lightly damaged car parted out through dealers. If they weren't cars... it would be downright creepy.
Well you gave your price and u never thought someone would bite on it! It’s probably not about the money but maybe more into appreciating of all the hard work that you’ve done on the car and this buyer seems to be that coz if its about money, he wouldn’t have agreed to the price you stated immediately. But i dont think you will let it go ever..just because of your personality, no question you poured your heart out on this.
I had the chance to drive a Spice chassis 308 IMSA race car back in the early 90s....it was an amazing car for the era..one of one..like what you built. Looked very similar...
Dude, good luck and have some fun! I have been watching this build since day 1. I am guessing there are people watching this episode that have connections or pull and they can spread your channel and these big companies can sponsor you for a CNC machine or a trip to the Nurburgring! Good luck and we'll catch ya when you are at WTAC.
I would have been surprised and from a personal perspective disappointed if you sold it, but I wouldn't have blamed you. 400K is definitely a life changing number! I'm selfishly glad you didn't, though, I'm really looking forward to seeing your videos from down under and whatever comes next😁🤘😁🤘
I think you nailed every question with fantastic replies. Especially the reason why you turned down the sale! For love and respect of the process and to see your project all the way through to enjoy the Hell out of it! Beautiful car, Congratulations Gentleman!!🤘
Iv been watching this build since the beginning and appreciate that you didn't sell it. I really want to see it drive more. After years of watching/ waiting I wouldn't be alone in being very be disappointed and annoyed if you had sold it. Please excuse my while I vent a moment. A project car isn't as easy to start as you say. Unless you're only talking about adding a few easy bolt on parts that can be installed in an afternoon outside. It's really annoying when people claim anyone can have a project car. A real project requires a (secure) indoor work space with storage for many new parts and tools. Especially in locations that get weather other then 90% sunshine. No one in Vancouver BC were I live rents personal garage space for any use other then storage. Maybe in the US a person can rent a secure private garage or barn for a few hundred bucks a month and allows you to work on a vehicle in it, but that just doesn't exist here. I've basically been trying to build a car for 29 years. Unfortunately life had other plans. Severe depression costing me a job of 22 years. I wasn't technically fired. They called it a frustration of contract, which takes to long to explain. However starting over in your 40's with that one job to put on my resume, no formal training and every possible employer asking why I left a good job are clearly going to see me having depression as a liability. So a decent paying job is basically impossible. Even without losing my job buying a house here is extremely expensive as is renting. To rent a home with a garage big enough for a project car would cost atleast $3500 a month. I can't afford that, commercial shop space or to pay someone else to build my car. So my car just sits unfinished. Unfortunately I let depression destroy any chance at a worthwhile life. So Yes! I'm left feeling very F-ing bitter, and sad that I will likely never own a home, have a family or finish even 1 car, let alone multiple, cars like you, and other TH-camrs, but it's not like I actually expect anyone to give a sh-t. I'll be shocked if someone even reads this. Rant over
Doing another one may be a good idea now you've gotten the experience and process down. But knowing your labor is worth so much must give you satisfaction.
I have watched the 244 GTK build from day one when you aired it on TH-cam. You did an amazing, solid build. I have my fingers crossed that you will do great at the time attack and that you, plus the Ferrari will make it back safely home. I hope to see the Audi build episode soon. God bless.
Firstly, Enjoy your time in Oz and good luck during the event. As for selling it, As long as the car would be driven not stored and polished no problem.
It’s life changing money but think about it for a bit. You easily have $150k just in parts in this car. So the remaining $250k here split between 2 years is $125k. That’s a good salary for a year… but when you break it down that way it’s not nearly the windfall it seems.
You make good point's, however it's still just a 308 in the end. $400,000 was a LOT for any 308. No way would this go for anything like that if Mike had to auction it off.
Turned a turd into a diamond. Honestly, I’m a new viewer. Seeing you work is genuinely like watching a ballet. Your videos have given me huge inspiration to make strides on my boosted rx-8. I can barley make a basic drop bracket for an oil thermostat, but seeing you create seat brackets and sway bar adjustment lever mounts is truly BEAUTIFUL. I hope that one day I can shake your hand and show you what I’ve made, although it will probably never compare to anything you’ve laid hands on :)
I wonder if that crazy price tag is now higher ? A lot has changed since the Sema reveal. As for spare in Australia, the car now has a very common engine that i assume is widely supported in Australia so there should be no difficulty in sourcing parts whilst out there if a sensor or belt fails. Swapping K24 engines in to high end performance cars is getting more & more common, there are two Porsche 911s i know of on TH-cam that have swapped out the original OEM motor for a K24 to make more power.
I have a Tormach 770M which is a pretty decent machine. Doing it again I would have definitely gone to a Tormach 1100M or MX which is their largest machine. Not that the 770M is not good but once you start machining you will always want to go bigger work and faster speeds. The 1100MX is really the last stop of " prosumer" machines before you get into things like needing 3 phase current, etc. I am very interested in the Langmuir MR1 (I also have their small plasma table) but it is very new to the market where as tormach has been around for a while. If you have 3 phase power and space it also might be worth looking into a used industrial cnc as they have a lot more ridgitiy, power, features etc.
Respect. I love your car, your skills, your vision, your hard work and passion. That car is a work of art and worth more than money. You can always sell it to fund your next mind-blowing project, whatever that may be.
S/W x WTAC merch?? We neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed it! Or another S/W merch drop of literally anything! This was a cool video, thanks Mike and good luck in Australia!!
I saw your build from scratch I was so impressed with the welding process and the planning went into chassis reinforcement and everything but with all do respect you build an engine k24 that cant even last 50 hrs with all your expertise and funds available it just sends out all the wrong messages to guys like us who builds in their garage with very modest budget
You should do a collaboration with Titans of cnc on what would be the best machine for you. He would also be able to put you in contact with any producer of a CNC machine.
It seems like yesterday that I subscribed to your channel, yet so long ago. I’ve been watching since the first farrariai video and I will probably watch all your projects. I have never regretted not selling a car but have serious regrets for most that I have sold. Once they are gone… they are gone.
I may be the only one, but I wouldn't have been mad at all if you'd have sold it. I know you'd take that money and start or build something different or better. Having restored a few old cars, I know for me, the restoration is the most fun part. The driving of the car is great and all, but the build is what is the puzzle and the challenge.
308 was kinda star struck it’s probably one of the most beautiful Ferrari ever created but it was never meant to be a “performance” car… so it does make a great platform for hot rodding. This a great project in that it might encourage other to think of the hot rod potential of the 308… this is an awesome build. It’s almost too beautiful to race now!!! LoL

Ouch…. I’m one of the A-holes who said to find a wrecked one. Eating crow after this. I get it man. This car is now legendary world wide. I have really grown to love this car. Was not a fan during the build. But I take it all back
Hey guys don't forget how all those car manufacturers started!! Enzo had Alfas built, modded and prepared for racing before being recognized and backed by Alfa, then started his own company. Porsche modded Beetles. And so on. They all started by making something better and faster. The businessman in Enzo would want us all to enjoy his company's cars....but he'd applaud you for being a true motorhead. Modern day Ferrari won't give a cease and desist for that reason. Keep enjoying. When you're dont then sell it. We can't have everything and we can't take it with us when we go. On to the next project! I still loved it in yellow though 😅
Love watching your build.I always thought they were one of the most beautiful cars in the world. When I first got the drive one I was shocked about how slow they were. would you ever consider taking the 308 to the silver state classic. In my opinion, no one covers it and I think would be interested for a TH-camr to go and yes I’m one of the weird guys of like all the technical stuff, so keep it coming. Thank you.

Of the top 5 @ 6:35; 2 and 5 have proven the most true for me. 4 as well, but in life, 5 is the most relatable. Try, and try, and try some more.
Super keen and glad you didn't sell it.
you are spot on with not selling, and the other stuff as well. huge respect. I really enjoyed this series.
I like these Q&A videos. It's a chance to see some of the business side of the build and your channel.
The Q&A was great! Good luck and have a great time in Australia!
Freaking happy for you brother!
Love your content.
Building dreams.
I have a project I will execute at some point.
Working for it!
Dude! Thanks for being an inspiration! And pushing people!
Just watched you on the WTA live stream, was really awesome to see you there. Shame about the transmission, such a beautiful project.
Your choice was correct.
For car lovers,
it's irresistible, isn't it?
This business.
The car that a boy who loves cars drew and dreamed of, the car he most wanted to drive...
This is a treasure that will last a lifetime.
I'd say that your car is worth more than the 400k ...just my opinion...your build quality is top notch!!!
Love your content and more importantly the attention to detail of your builds. Massive inspiration. Good luck in Aus
Mike needs a Desktop Metal sponsorship! Get this man some machines.
Good luck in Australia!
Completely hand built and one of a kind car for $400k? Hell of a steal for the buyer.
Great episode, thanks Mike. I wish I could make it over to Australia from NZ for the racing. Good luck and enjoy the trip!
one of, if not the nicest and creative build on YT in the past few years. congrats and good luck! respect from Toronto CDN.
Mike with a CNC machine and a Plasma Table at his shop would be a force to be reckoned with! Can't even imagine all the wild stuff he wold create! 😂
Agree! I have a 440 and after all the tooling, tool changer, etc the incremental cost for a 1100MX wouldn't be that painful.
@@depthsounderdave Agreed, the tooling always gets you! Not to mention a toolchanger is 5K for the tormach!
Respect. I love your car, your skills, your vision, your hard work and passion. That car is a work of art and worth more than money.
You can always sell it to fund your next mind-blowing project, whatever that may be.
Damn, I miss just looking at the 244... Absolutely love this thing!
Love this guy and his mindset. Projects are unreal!
Once they are gone… they are gone.
i think you made the best looking car ever for me. I think it's slick, aggressive, retro. Size is just right. Super cool.
Awesome episode!!! WTA is going to be epic for you and the SW 308! Good luck!! Be safe!!!
LoL
Mike the car is awesome man... Don't let anyone tell you differently! It's weird... If someone went back and watched some of your first videos you explained Exactly why you started with the car you did... I just wanna go for a rip in it!!
Ouch…. I’m one of the A-holes who said to find a wrecked one. Eating crow after this. I get it man. This car is now legendary world wide. I have really grown to love this car. Was not a fan during the build. But I take it all back
Best of luck down under, all! What a build! Safe travels, and looking forward to the next video! Go get 'em boys!!!!!
Sometimes Money is No Replacement for Pride and Craftsmanship! Great job Mike, and Good Luck Down Under!!!!
Godspeed in Australia Mike.
Thank you.
Great Q&A, loved it.
As for the Ring, you won’t be disappointed, I’d definitely try your hardest to make that happen, be careful though, very addictive, it’s crack for petrol heads🤪👍
You dont need people to tell you should have taken the money. You made a decision and live your life without regrets. All the best!
I absolutely love your videos and style, the story telling is next level 👌🏼
Send cut send is shaking in its boots seeing you wanting a cnc lmao
The car is amazing, my dream swap. Hope you enjoy it and we get to see new adventures with it. Of course you didn't sell it man come on you just finished it now is the time to enjoy it. Stay blessed brother.
Have a great time down under! Stay safe. Good luck!
Thanks Mike! Looking forward to seeing the ferrari ripping around SMSP
Can't wait to see this awesome car in the flesh, see you in Aus Mike! Well done!
Ferrari doesn't deserve their customers "respecting" their products, your build is awesome
Can’t wait to see it in Sydney next week!
Awesome build! Enjoyed the journey!
