Thanks for the quick and helpful tutorial! Also if anyone had trouble like me, my hook empty wasn't working properly with cloth when scaling, but moving the hook modifier before the cloth modifier on the plane fixed it, I think I did them out of order.
I sometimes like the longer tutorials that explain the details - but when I need to get something done quickly, quick concise videos like this are a gift. Thank you! (Oh, if your curtains don't hang right, check that you haven't disabled gravity, d'oh!)
6-Jan-2024 - Thanks for the tutorial. For those having issues, the steps given in the video are still applicable. Here are some issues that I had (as well as others in the comments) and how I worked around them: Grid object vanishes when Cloth physic is applied: Ensure the timeline is on frame one. I spent about 15 minutes wondering why my Grid kept dropping in negative Zed. Checking the timeline I noticed I was on frame 74. Starting on frame 1 fixed the issue. Scaling Hook during playback: Use the keyboard shortcut S followed by the axis (X or Y depending on your Grid orientation. Pixelated Grid object at end of animation: Increase the shading angle under Object Data>Normals>Auto Smooth. I had to go to 180 degrees. Also, add subdivision modifier with 2 or 3 iterations (your preference here).
I'm really enjoying these tutorials! I can see myself spending a lot of time here :) Let's get you to 5k before 2023! Edit: turns out, I'm subscribed to both channels and didn't know lmao. Hopefully, you'll see as much success with this channel as your other one :)
Finally; thank you. Every other tutorial I've found has been about making a flag blow in the wind...yours is the first I've found to explain how to make fabric hang in a predetermined position.
If your curtain goes all over the place and you start questioning your existence as a blender artist: Make sure to really select the empty when scaling.
Actually a number divisible by 3 works every time. It's the number of edges, so you'll end up with one more vertex. You subtract that vertex with your first selection, then skip 2 and select 1, going 3 at a time to the end.
It seems simple but didn't know it, thank you for the tutorial-needed the curtains, even if I'm a animator doesn't' mean I know of this procedure, thanks again.
I scaled my empty object slowly, but wasn't happy with out it turned out. upon replaying back, it saved what I had scaled (I do not have auto key on) I've deleted all bakes too just in case, even though I didn't bake. how can I reset the simulation? Also when I add a torus, add collision, it does not interact with the curtain edit: solved my problem change changing my unite scale back to 1. (I typically work in .01 due to unreal measurement difference)
Perfect. Id love a part 2 where you do the same to the point for creating materials for curtains too?? I havent really figured out how to make them look good with light shining through them. Perhaps that would be too in depth, not sure. Either way, good job.
I know this is a bit of an older video and things change over time, i tried doing what you showed in the video however it does not work. I did step by step about 3 times and still get the same issue. It only moves the part that I have in the group when I scale the empty does not effect the rest of the plane what am I doing wrong?
Also be sure to not do anything by scale because blender simulations hate real world scale for some strange reason. So scale it up run sim save it then scale it back down to what you actually need after the simulation.
@@LatinDimpling thank you! your comment helped a lot💚 i'd like to take a note here maybe people would like to see it: in 3d viewport, CRTL + A, in the menu choose Visual Geometry to Mesh.
I know this is 4 months later, but did you try going into your cache underneath the physics tab for the curtain object? There you can increase the frames you want the simulation to continue for. Had the same issue and that's what fixed it for me
⚠⚠ Error resolution! CTRL + SHIFT + Numpad+ is not working? I had the same problem as you (the person reading this) and I spent a few hours trying to fix it, and I found the solution. Pay attention! There is a solution, and it can be accessed through two different methods, one from the interface and the other through keyboard commands. Method using keyboard commands: Select the desired object and press the TAB key to enter Edit Mode. Press the Shift + Space keys. A window will appear. If it disappears, press Shift + Space again and make sure not to move the mouse. Without touching anything and without moving the mouse, press the W key (note that the window that appeared when you pressed SHIFT + Space should be displayed on the screen). Now, you probably noticed that the mouse arrow in the left part of the screen where you have the top column with the modeling tools has changed. Now, you can select one point (check at the very top to make sure the point mode is selected (not line, not face)). Select one point, leave two points free, select the next one, and finally, you can press CTRL + Shift + Numpad+ and it will work. Press CTRL + Shift + Numpad+ as many times as needed. Congratulations! You may be wondering how to return to the old mouse selection form? Press Shift + Space, do not touch anything so that the window does not disappear and press the B key. That's it.
0:59 You forgot to add "Once you've extended your *fake* timeline, extend your *REAL* timeline by scrolling down in the Cloth Property to the 'Cache' drop-down (right above the 'Shape' drop-down), and increasing the 'End' value under 'Simulation Start' from 250 to whatever value you extended your timeline to." Blender is just so beginner friendly 😭
Wait. . . Does the curtain become a solid object after the modifier is applied, retaining its shape from the keyframe no matter what I do with it afterward? Like, can I just delete the keyframes and discard all the animation it took to prep, making the curtain another still object in my scene without worrying about moving cloth bogging down my resources?
@@stevefuncke9798 It's been a while since I posted that, but yeah. Learning that I didn't have to keep the simulation unless I needed it to move around is a game changer for my limited resources. sorry, but when i move try to move my empty only the top edge moves, and the rest of the plane doesn't move, i followed each step so im not sure where i went wrong
sadly this is due to your tri count, more triangles you have the better it will look, but more laggy. If you do the animation with say 200k tris (possibly way too much) it would look good, you'll just have to decimate it if need be (or bake)

Like someone else said, you need to scale your object MUCH bigger than what it is when you spawn it in. He doesn't mention it in the video. Otherwise your curtain just shrivels up on itself.
Wow. These shorts are actually proving to be better than a full-on 10-15 mins tutorial.
