This was literally the perfect timing. I’m working on my first complete 3D film and this is PERFECT!! And it doesn’t make my brain hurt! These are such simple steps to follow through on all my scenes. Not a 45+ minute real time setup. Thank you for making great content!
I LOVE THIS! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Small update to the people finding this tutorial: the grease pencil tool doesn't works anymore without "Auto Keying" (the dot symbol down on the animation timeline) turned off. It HAS to be turned on for this method to work. Alternatively you can unwrap your 3D model and draw on a new material on top without using the grease pencil.
If anyone else is having issues with lighting when increasing the border thickness, go to the border material settings and select "None" in Shadow Mode, under the "Settings" dropdown.
This was so easy to follow I did the shading in just 2 min! While other tutorials took more than a few hours!!!! Thank you, now I can make my "2d" animation process easier.
Yes - so easy to follow! I found most of the tutorials very confusing, since I'm a beginner, but this one seems very easy to follow. Huge thanks Blender Box, soon I'll be trying out this technique :)
Fast, easy to understand, learned a bunch of useful things while doing the tutorial, very well explained. Clearly one of, if not the best tutorial I have ever seen.
What I like about this is it’s multiple tutorials in one and it shows how to use them together I can here to get the cartoony look and learned som other stuff
Superb tutorial, thank you, i was having problems with other tutorials because nobody mentions you have to render in Eevee but know i've got the results i've been looking for. cheers
Im looking for the borderlands style and this is close to what I'm looking for ! When I see cel-shading I usually get close to what I want but not the hand painted look just cel shading in post processing. Looks like hard work but ima give it a try !
@@therealblenderbox It really did, 1 your video was straight to the point and 2 It took a year for me to solve this issue, so yes it really did. c: I am grateful.
Thanks for the tutorial! As someone with more retro comic art style (as some of my friends call it) the grease pencil technique will be super useful for my models :^)
Congrats on starting Blender Box!🥳 Would love a tutorial on the grease pencil - surface drawing. My lines never end up nice and clean -they seem jagged and glitchy, and really don't know how to fix this issue.

Very cool and useful! Just stumbled across this channel and I really like it already! I also like that the logo reminds me heavily of the old Rareware and Banjo-Kazooie logos etc. Dunno whether that's intentional, but I really like it :D
well that's great that is perfect because right now I'm working on a 3D model Droopy Dog, Red Hot Riding Hood, the Wolf, Butch and any other character of Tex Avery in between just like that. And I appreciate the content of yours
This is the greatest tutorial I've found about this. I just have a question: Can I apply the outline to an object which has already a solidify modifier?
i have a problem with the solidify to add the outline, for some reason it kind of bugs out the texture and it doesnt looks as good and the thicker the outline the worse it looks, the biggest problem is the handle and the leather strap that completly breaks when i try to apply the outline
@@therealblenderbox it kind of works, it fixes the error of the metalic handle but the leather strap is still broken, if i go into positive numbers in the solidify modifier it just gets thicker without the outline and if i go into negative values the outline appear broken
Seems like a really good tutorial. However, I have an issue with the actual border. Blender is using the solidify modifer to also solidify the mesh, which is not ideal. Any help would be appreciated.
Unfortunately I have the toon shader effect only in my material preview tab. When I'm trying to render I have only one colour - the left one on the colour ramp scale. On the render previwe too, onlu one colour and outline. Do you have any ideas what could go wrong? awesome effect, great tutorial! *the light source ofc. Nvm :) thank you
Sorry in advance lol, I have kind of a hard time with texturing and stuff, but out of curiosity, would there be a way to make that shield decal emissive?
So out of curiosity, how do you, for lack of a better term and understanding, "jump" the color stops to make them darker? I'm still getting used to blender and I don't know many of the shortcuts.
Thanks man. Everything seems to have worked except my textures are flipped. The color I chose for the fill is the outline and vice versa. I'm pretty sure I followed it step for step. Any idea what could be wrong? Edit: I think it's a problem with the material offset slider in the solidify modifier, but I don't know what.
I encountered this problem today after successfully implementing the process on other objects, unfortunately I think it has to do with how the object was built/meshed (I made a well but I think when I scaled it I inverted the mesh so the inside is on the outside and vice versa (I could be wrong)) my only solution was to rebuild it (but I’m in no way a professional so I’m not sure 😅)
In the section where you say the further to the right it pick the color from, I did not understand how you did that. No matter what I do the colors did not change. What you did there for them to change?

Man, you gotta love it when you see a master at their craft and I don't even mean Blender. This is a smooth ass tutorial.
amazing. i started blender a week ago and i've spent 3-4 hours seeing what tutorials i should follow, saved this playlist. can't wait to see more, TY!
Glad I could help!
Love the fast paced less hand holdy style of this tutorial while still giving enough info to replicate the artwork yourself
That's the plan! They're meant to be more referential than anything. Glad that's coming across!

Woah! This is amazing! Many other toon or cell shaders are overly convoluted and easy to mess up. This is actually easy to follow!
Happy to help!

One of THE best cell shader in Blender! How do you bake this including the grease pencil drawings onto a texture?
You can just select an edge and Ctrl+B for the grooves. No need to keep on adding loopcuts.
Bevelling is another option, sure.
i have a problem with the solidify to add the outline, for some reason it kind of bugs out the texture and it doesnt looks as good and the thicker the outline the worse it looks, the biggest problem is the handle and the leather strap that completly breaks when i try to apply the outline
Make sure you've applied the scale of your object.

You're welcome!
If i export the model to a game engine, like Godot, would the toon aspect continue?
The solidify modifier isn't working for me? It just makes the mesh thicker and I can't get an outline at all
You're My Heart, You're My Soul😍
Seems like a really good tutorial. However, I have an issue with the actual border. Blender is using the solidify modifer to also solidify the mesh, which is not ideal. Any help would be appreciated.
did you ever find a fix? it works for my shield but not anything else
I figured it out, sometimes you need to make the thickness a negative value.
So cool
Thankyou!
not optimized for games but it's a cool way to do it
How do you do this in the new Blender version 4.1? There's no such thing as a Shader to RGB node
shader to rgb is only available when you change your renderer to EEVEE.
say thanks to google
Best of the best
Thankyou!
Nvm :) thank you
This looks pretty good ngl, but how well will this work when I connect an image texture to the base color of the Principled BSDF?
But what if you want rigg and bent that object is it gonna effect grease pencil badly or not
Not sure, give it a go - I have a feeling though that Grease Pencil objects will have to be omitted if you want mesh warping.
Great tutorial! How should I export this into Unreal Engine?
Bravo!
How would you export this into engines like unity and unreal?
thank you for this, do you happen to have tutorial on cycles? using toon shader?
can this trick work with anything u make into blender?

Try increasing or decreasing the offset, failing that try flipping your normals.
