Travis, amazing content. It's so fascinating to hear what goes through the head of an elite Olympic athlete, and getting a sense of the heightened awareness you have in the middle of a match -- noticing the grips, keeping track of what the referee's decision-making style is, etc.
That performance against Avtandil Tchrikishvili was amazing. He's such a physically powerful competitor who can threaten not only with his signature ura-nage counter against forward throws, but also has a strong maki-komi attack and a surprisingly good collar-and-sleeve uchimata too. I remember seeing the submission and thinking "Stevens' wrist must be made of iron because I know Tchrikishvili's neck is!" He's usually so strong from that quadpod position but you turned him over really nicely.
You mentioned your classic 2012 match against Ole Bischof. My Korean friends said you're like a hero in Korea because of that performance -- after that all-out war with you in the semis, Ole was completely exhausted for the finals, allowing Kim Jae-bum to get a highlight-reel gold medal victory for Korea that year.

It’s funny you mention how strong his neck is. I actually hurt my hand choking him I was pulling so hard! Lol. You can see I had both hands tapped for the final!

This was really amazing Travis. Congrats. That gold medal match hurts, I won't lie, I was pissed at you watching it live lol. Imagine how you felt. It's sorta like he caught an interception right in his hands for the Super Bowl...or something. You were the better athlete here. Thanks.

Fascinating,Im judo stoopid really trying to understand the attitude and applications of the techniques.I got 4 years of bjj but really trying to be more of a Judoka .Joined a judo school to add to my grappling education.

I think you will not regret it. If you have the athleticism and strength for it, then judo (and wrestling) can vastly enrich your enjoyment of grappling. The standup sports have a much faster pace than ground sports (IBJJF, sub grappling, etc), and that makes them absolutely exhilarating. BJJ is a lot of fun too but it doesn't have that "roller coaster ride" thrill that you get from defending or executing an explosive takedown.
Just watch out for injuries, standup grappling is much more dangerous than BJJ. In BJJ you can resist a lot and you probably won't get many serious injuries. Judo is different; you can get some pretty serious injuries if you try to resist 100% before you're ready for it. And even if you are really experienced, you can still get injured; most of the international competitors I've met have all had some serious, life altering injury -- hip, lower back, shoulder, knee, etc. My advice for all people transitioning from BJJ to judo is this -- make safety your priority, not winning.

This was fascinating. I have no experience with anything athletic at this level, only hobbyist Jiujitsu and hopefully a bit more judo after Covid! I picked up your newaza mastery instructional thanks to the Covid discounts. Much appreciation for everything you share with the world and for representing the US so well.

I think learning to lose is a big part of competing in Judo. Since every mistake can cost you a match it's likely you're gonna lose some. Builds character 😄
Don't know about copy right issues, but seeing you live comment on tournaments could be cool.

    • @TravisStevensgrappling

Just a suggestion, when TH-cam rolls out new features that you'd like to use and you don't fully understand them, find another channel that is already using them and let them walk you through where the buttons are, and how the stuff works.
People that make money on TH-cam figured this out very quickly, and are usually very descriptive about where to find the new button features so that you can send them money 😅
May save you a little bit of time. I'm glad you figured it out though
