I'm fifty-something, and started riding in the early 90's. Of course it was all XC, from then until I got my most recent bike.... a Rocky Instinct. Last week we were riding a local trail system that has one jump line. The goal was to get two of my buddies to hit a 6' drop on the trail. Not once did I think about my jump technique on the way down, but it was the first time I had ever cleared every jump on the trail. Yes.... I was stoked.
hey jeff, just wanted to say that you are an excellent instructor. meeting the student where they are, providing clear explanation, demonstration, and feedback in a consistently supportive way. i have been teaching piano for 15 years which requires a lot of the same skills so i feel qualified to comment on your expertise in that regard. :) as you also know, the most important thing is the connection with the student and you are obviously a natural in that area. then again, its pretty easy to connect with people who share the passion! anyway just wanted to compliment you and i love seeing the tutorials, please keep em coming!
I ran over a Rattlesnake, couldn't see until the last minute, was going fast. Didn't see the snake on the way back, so 🤷 both parties were OK I guess. Still cringe 😬 even seeing a stick on the trail.
By far the best tutorial. Make sure the line from the BB to your head is perpendicular to the end of the lip; in effect you're "leaning back" relative to horizon.
I am local and just started riding a few months ago and have been getting comfortable jumping. I was finally feeling good on the blue and I asked my buddy if I could follow him in on the black line that you were doing in this video, and I said I would just take it one at a time. He said if I clear the first one just keep going and stop when I come across something that makes me uncomfortable, and… I cleared the whole line first try hahahaha. I went back up did it a few more times but the first run through was just as smooth as the fifth! I was so stoked, following someone just gives me so much confidence! Crazy timing for this video since this all happened last week!
that video came just at the right time for me; it shows how important is to ride with somebody who doesn't put pressure on you but rather pushes you a little bit and at the same time showing you how it could be done. Filming with your phone could be a game-changer if you want to understand what you do wrong. But first of all, what I really liked in this video, is that you do it when you feel ready. Leaving your own comfort zone is always a bit scary, but you should get to that line with confidence as close as possible before you hit it. Quality content as always. Keep it coming!
brave girl, fast learner too. Would be awesome to see her weekly/monthly progression because, imo, most of us jumps the way she does. Oh and your patient as a teacher/instructor is amazing!
I am 63 year old rider and been riding since when the AMP linkage fork first came out. So I am not a jumper and probably will never be but I like your videos. They all make sense and lack that Ra Ra jumping and bike parks are what mtbing is all about. For me and I am sure for so many many others I enjoy climbing, speed, technical stuff, hike a bike and just being able to go where others dont. I do however wish I could bunny hop a downed tree that is 2 to 3 feet above and a trail but BMX and trials stuff - I have never had the opportunity to learn. I am not even sure if a 29 FS XC bike can do that. Good job on your videos all have been worth watching.
Professor JKW, another great video that gives back and instructs at the same time. After your crash, I wouldn't want to do it either. Glad to see you back at it. I totally agree on the mental aspect and looking at it before you commit. Your student, she did a great job but she had an amazing teacher.
Great jumping success story -- I am working my way through a local jump line, and have the middle parts down which are a shallow gap and a table. Those lead to another gap jump at the end of the line which is tucked into some bushes. It has a bigger lip and landing so higher consequences, but still not huge in size. I finally get through the first two jumps fast enough to hit the last gap, which I do, twice so I'm stoked with my progress. Third time I stop because I don't have the speed. Fourth time, I am just at the lip and decide I need to bail around, but crash hard instead. I rode home with my arm dangling down and couldn't lift it for a week. Such success.
Visualization is key for me and everything must feel right as I ride up to whatever feature I am riding. If the slightest thing feels off, I wont send it. I am not hitting big stuff like in the video yet, but hopefully I can menatlly get myself there soon. Great video man and kudos to her on hitting those jumps!
What a great tutor; patient and methodical. I'm terrible at jumps but think I would progress massively with this kind of tuition. Great video. Thanks Jeff
This is exactly what I needed. Getting back into jumping after quite some time. So helpful for my motivation and as a reminder on how proper technique looks like! Appreciate it. Thank you Jeff! Good job Taren (hope this is correct).
Jeff, thanks so much for this!! I've been trying to teach my buddy better jumping techniques but often fall short on explanations because I've never had to dissect my riding. Your tip of filming each other on specific jumps to capture what was done correctly or things that need tweaking is just what I needed. I'll be employing this in about n hour when we hit the trails! Thanks again and happy trails!!
@04:01 is such an important part, a key, if you get this key, it will unlock the door to jumping heaven. Crouch, pump, pop, and extend... Session this over and over and over and over and then. . . . Break through happens!
great video, again. Got a new bike, The Occam - and it feels very different to jump than my old bike. Good to see this video to gain some confidence in taking it easy and not just sending it with my head under my arm.
Awesome video Jeff, thanks! My success story is finally hitting jumps in my forties motivated by riding with my two boys (10 & 13) who have great natural ability. Must take after their momma...
Love this video, Jeff, because it is not POV. I don't want to be Downer Dude, but I am afraid she's headed for the emergency room before long. In my humble opinion she does not have a strong foundation to support going bigger and bigger.
I rode with some guys that were a little more advanced than I was the other day, and I had a whole bunch of progression that day! Tried several new jumps and sent my biggest jumps yet. I had them tow me in so I could get the speed right and after the first one my confidence was through the roof and I knocked down a handful of jumps and drops that I had been wanting to hit for a long time. I only wish that area was closer to home so I could ride it more often! P.S. great video!
My proudest was probably going back to NorCups, with a new crown and steerer and finally clearing the Matt Pack. And the big line in Watsonville was pretty sweet.
Matt pack in the back of nor cups there wrecked a few Pitchforks on my bike too! Hell ya, those were some sweet jumps! Watsonville split my old Chameleon into two pieces. Red devil split the replacement in two as well.
There is a trail in my area called hotshots that has a couple of small doubles that I have always been scared of. In January, my cousin and I rode a jump line with a bunch of doubles the same size as hotshots and larger and he gave me some tips and helped me have the confidence to hit them. Last week I hit the first of the doubles on hotshots and absolutely cased the landing. Worst possible scenario. But, I didn't get hurt and I decided it could only get better. I tried again with a bit more speed. I preloaded more and cased again but not as badly. So I went back and tried it a third time. I landed it smoothly and chained the landing into the next feature. It felt GREAT. I hit the second double on the trail with a lot more confidence and landed it on the first try. These are small doubles that aren't really very impressive, smaller than the ones I rode in January even, but it felt good to face my fear and conquer this particular trail feature.
Hi mate, i started Mtbing last year and it started with a big crash..... and at that time i dont have idea of the sizes of bike, the handle bar length etc. mine happen to have a 600mm with HB.... and i crash. Cuts my confidence a bit but it inspires me to learn more about MTBing and started to practice BH, table top jump small ones and yeah this time i have ca confidence of gapping a bike length jump.... i wish i could show you some of the videos but it dont come out on a smart phone but yeah.... even these video you've made inspires me a lot. You stay safe.... mabuhay....
my local trial has about a 7 foot table with a really small, tight, and kicky lip.... yea it took me quite a while to commit to that, because the speed you need seemed way too fast for such a small lip.
Flat pedals or clip? The big question for me. I could see Jeff had flat pedals, but they scare me. I don't understand how you can bunny hope without being clipped in? Nice vid as always.
So about thousand likes and not a single dislike, that says a LOT on a subject like this 🙌

That jump trail is absolutely massive

Awesome teacher, your student really soaked up the knowledge you gave her. Bravo
Not a going off a jump story but..... One time, while at a fast pace, I bunny hopped/jumped a snake. (Very proud neither of us got hurt)
Those are savage moments
I ran over a Rattlesnake, couldn't see until the last minute, was going fast. Didn't see the snake on the way back, so 🤷 both parties were OK I guess. Still cringe 😬 even seeing a stick on the trail.
I had to bunnyhop a old lady's small poodle once on my way to school almost 15years ago. Lil bugger just lunged in front of my tire :D

The adrenaline rush from conquering features with the help of your homies or a coach is one of the best feelings in the sport.
Great vid, Jeff 🏆

Dream day to wake up and head to the trails to meet Jeff and learn a thing or ten. Great vid as always🙏
That one time I didn't crash on a jump that's more than a bike length, was pretty sweet. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy the ride

Jeff, digging your video from Dubrovnik. Cant wait to get home to PHX and practice jumping per your tutorial. Blue skies, Jg

i went otb on a set of jumps and didn't hit them for almost a year... Felt so good to finally hit them again

Love these videos! Great instruction And you automatically insure confidence to your student.
Great vid and super nice as always. You're a model sir
Totally wish I could jump more on my rides
The perfect video at the perfect time, thanks! 🙌🏼😎
I would soooo much love to have you Jeff as my coach! :) Great vid, as usual!
Awesome video. Im in a similar skill to Teryn so this was very helpful.
Awesome video! just starting to do some small jumps/ drops as well, this video will help, thank you!!!!
Great video Jeff 👍 going to try making it to the june 6th PA race
Hell yeah! Great video!

brilliant instruction. !!!!!!!
What a cool lady jumps better than me all day long !
Awesome!
Those big jumps look so sick, it’s too bad the boarder is still closed

i want to try these jumps so bad.

Ride flat pedals and learn proper bunny hops first. It will totally boost your jumping skills and confidence.
Jeff, where were you and Taryn practicing? Bellingham? I'm in Portland and I might want to drive up there! Looks like a lot of fun!
Bellingham. Cedar Dust jump lines on Galbraith.
@@markoconnor9447 Thanks!
Anybody know where this jump line is? I assume BC, squamish area?
Where is this trail at?
Sigh, sent my first pro line this week . Let the stoke get the best of me after clearing a few but then bailed ..... broken wrist 😑

to my untrained eye, her bars seems to be too wide. but what do i know?
How’s her bunny hop skill? Seems she could work on that first, then translate it to jumping, as it’s the same motion.

I would be happy just to successfully jump one of these... I think I have to look for someone to teach me...
Awesome!
