- Windows 95 turns 25 today and I want to get it back on this Gateway 2000 that was shipped out with it!
I'm extremely grateful to the viewer who sent this system (and preferred to remain anonymous). I've had a lot of fun getting it back up and running and it is a really cool example of a complete system from this era.

Thanks for the reminder of the 25th Anniversary. This was and is my favorite gaming system and computer. Yeah, I understand the speed and video quality of today's machines are off the charts, but if I was stuck on a deserted island and could only have one system it would be the Win95. Still have my original Win 3.1 & Win 95 systems. One of my machines has both and with a "Buttons for Dos" program I can jump between 3.1, 95 and Dos all on the same computer. Tons of games for this system, not to mention all the cool screensavers. Love the Dos only side and then going back into 3.1, or 95. That Gateway 2000 is really sweet. Thanks for sharing this great machine. Who can forget the "cow" boxes???

Oh my God. Your footage of Interstate '76 brought back so many memories of playing a demo of it on my childhood PC. I never knew what the game was, but had extremely vivid memories of it and you just brought back so many of those feels from then. Thank you for showing that game!
The case itself is very nostalgic to me... Especially with that missing front panel cover. But my Win95 based Gateway 2000 model was about a year older, so had different internals.
My P5-200 Minitower was a Socket 7 MMX 200 MHz with 32MB of RAM. It had a weak S3 Trio videocard, but a real Soundblaster that was branded with the Gateway cowbox logo.
I still keep all of the essential parts, but unfortunately I threw out the case to save space, back when cases were not yet collectible...
While clearly different, I can see the family resemblance between this case+monitor and my family's. We have an older P5-166 desktop which shares the same curves and button shapes as this tower.
Good old Windows 95. I remember not liking the interface at first since it was so radically different from Win 3.11, but it quickly grew on me. Now I can't imagine Windows or any other OS without a start button or task bar. I have so many fond memories of PC building, and playing those old games. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Really well done, great production quality, I hope you can produce one more, showcasing the MS office suite and other production software. I know, not as fun to watch, but interesting and a trip down memory lane nonetheless. And you can still use i.e. MS Word from Office97 for all your Word Documents' needs!! That's mind boggling...

What a great nostalgic show! This is the computer I got for college. It was amazing in its day. That EV900 was the envy of my friends and that startup sound was always so loud because my speakers were up from playing Half-Life.

Excellent video. I have a Windows 95 computer and it gets used. With all its niggles and foibles, it was the progenitor of some great operating systems such as 98SE, XP and 7, which I have on various computers. It deserves to be celebrated. The simplicity of the early systems is so refreshingly easy when compared to the mind boggling maze of Windows 10. Three cheers for Windows 95! 🎈🎉

Wish Microsoft would at least release a Win95 theme (sort of the since-removed classic theme) on Win10. But oh well, Windows 7 was the last standing soldier of customisation :'(
I had such a bad user experience with Windows 10 it's the OS that drove me to be a Manjaro MATE user on all my main machines with with Chromium OS, and Mac OSX Catalina(recently scored a free 13in mid-2012 Macbook Pro in decent shape) on the side.
Its sad to think that one day like xp everyone will just drop win 7 and we will have to be forced to use windows 10

The Microsoft of 1995 is ABSOLUTELY GONE. There is no connection between MS of 1995 and today. That is true of up to the 2000s. Microsoft is not even an American company any more. The software sucks, it's slow, it's completely un-intuitive . All of the good developers at MS were outsourced to Bindis who bring in their entire village on visas. They are completely incompetent and completely corrupt. It's a fiefdom.
It is one of the major reasons why silicone valley innovation has almost entirely stopped. It is why so much stuff doesn't work anymore.
First thing I do on install windows 10 is to run a powershell script that removes ALL the apps. The next is to turn off a shitton of services. Then set the updates to be delayed for 30 days so I can do then WHEN I fuking want to, (after I install all the other things I do want). Windows 10 is fine after you tweak the LIVING FUK out of it. Except for the really stupid double control panel thing. Yeah 2 different main control panels depending on what you want to tweak. OMFG who thought that up should be SHOT.
@tarstarkusz You realize that people complained that nothing worked back in the Win95 days, too? And they were right. Things were far worse. Software crashed CONSTANTLY. You probably had to reinstall drivers a few times a year. Stuff would happen, and you'd have no way to troubleshoot it. Win95 was an unstable mess in many ways. WinNT was far better, but had terrible driver support and only ran business software.
In 1995 it was a FAR BIGGER DEAL to be able to not install components you wouldn't use because space was expensive. My first HDD for Windows 95 was 1 gigabyte, and adding a second would have cost a TON (and not all software could install on or use data from a second HDD, too). The 2gb that the extra Windows components take these days is literally nothing in comparison.

Congrats on the anniversary. I still remember installing it for the first time(s) in the mid 1990's. I even remember watching the Edie Brickell "Good Times" music video included on the install CD. It takes me back to those younger days 25 years ago. Of course I was still also using Windows 3.1 & MS-DOS then at the same time (I still do today on occasion).

That monitor is the jewel of the system. 19 inches at that time was probably at least half the total cost.
Windows 95 was great not just because it was a revolutionary OS but also because it introduced us to the fantastic world of digital video and audio which back then was in its infancy, I remember being impressed by watching the demo video "Edie Brickell - Good Times" on the Windows 95 CD. Most people didn't consider PC as a video/audio machine because they still weren't aware of its real capabilities
Clearly the previous owner took meticulous care of not only the computer, but the software they bought for it, I'm surprise they kept the boxes for those lovely games. Oh how I love 90s PC games.
Consider that back then, that computer cost over $2000 in 1997-98 dollars, so yeah, the more something cost, the more it's an investment you take care of. Plus it was build with quality materials. Quality from a construction standpoint, not tech. The tech was middling, about what you'd expect but a high quality 440LX intel branded/OEM motherboard.
Awesome to see all those games I played back in the days some I was already forgotten.

What a throwback! I had that same model back in the day. My first computer. Oh the memories and hours trying to get drivers to work. While hoping and praying I would not boot to the dreaded blue screen of death. Kids today have it so easy. Time to go soak my feet in Epsom salt.
lol, yes I remember the drivers for Win95 were a nightmare. They got better for Win98, but then Win98 still had its own stability issues. I'd retired the hardware by the time I switched to Win2K, skipped WinME completely. No wait I had already switched to an o'c celeron build in that GW case by Win98SE. Heh, it came with a 4GB HDD, yet today we have 1TB, mSD cards the size of my pinky nail.

Gateway, IBM were super expensive here in Sweden. Top-notch high end systems, so most of us either built their own or bought what Americans call boutique built systems which were faaar cheaper than prebuilts like these.
The WIlliams sound library is so good! And used so well in so many games!
I grew up on this PC and still have it set up as my go-to machine for games from the era. I remember that Riva card being comically bad when I tried to play Half-Life on it (thankfully was able to upgrade to a Voodoo3) but I actually really liked the sound from that Ensoniq card, especially with the Boston speakers that the system came with. Monitor was awesome too. Worth noting, if yours is like mine then there's supposed to be a plastic shroud over the CPU that connects to the intake fan on the PSU. No idea if it's actually necessary to keep it cool but I noticed it's missing in this one.

A gateway PC I remember I wanted one of those so bad when I was a kid. Parents got me a Packard Bell instead as my first PC. I loved it. Playing Roller Coaster Tycoon, The Sims, Redline so many fond memories.
This Windows 95 machine had better specs than my Compaq Presario from 1999 with Win98 on it.

HBD Win 95, can't believe it has been 25 years. The first brand new computer we owned I remember was a Olivetti Pentium 75. It came with Win 3.11 but had what I think was free or almost free mail in order for a Win 95 upgrade CD.

Wow just had a huge nostalgia hit over a funny thing.. that under-monitor power strip platform. We had that same one on our first family computer and it got transferred to many subsequent ones over the years

Oh man, this system was surprisingly nostalgic. Our family's 300 megahertz Pentium II had one of those HP Cd writers as well, I remember that blue eject button vividly.

Also, if we manage to survive 2020, then Windows XP will have its own 20th anniversary on August 24th roughly 1 year later.
I had a system in that case (but possibly not this exact system) and it had those Boston Acoustics speakers with it, and they were great! I was still using them up until about 2 years ago when they finally gave up the ghost.

I think I had this same system in my family as a kid, or at least one from the same era as I still have that book of CDs, and we had those speakers you were lacking kicking around into the XP era.
Fun Fact: Much like other Windows 9x family oses (Windows 98 and ME), Windows 95 still has DOS on its core, meaning that they still can play even the very first pc games

Win95 was revolutionary for Microsoft. But everything from multi-tasking to plug n play had been done with the Amiga. Amiga's had a 32-bit "auto-config" Zorro bus with the A3000 in 1990.
The Amiga was superior to the PC for many years
Amiga used an obsolete 68k processor which didn't support multitasking and memory management, unlike i386 and its successors. It was a toy computer.
I had this exact system, except probably bought a few months earlier so came with a lower MHz P2 CPU. Kept the case, modded the intake and cut out two 80mm rear exhaust fan mounts and two front fans for more airflow, and reused the case over 3 more rebuilds. The rear PSU hole can be enlarged and screw holes added to fit a standard ATX PSU.
I'm not into nostalgia of returning old equipment to use, but once the case had the 4 fans added and the bottom of the bezel opened up for more intake airflow, it was fine, nice and quiet with the fans at low RPM. A very sturdy case too, that I eventually added a front USB port pair to, not with a bay module but instead cutting a square hole in the plastic bezel and epoxying it in. Looked very professional like it came that way.
I no longer use that case but still have it. Probably due to be recycled along with several other items that are technologically obsolete.
I miss the keyboard. It was very durable, great key action, not quite an IBM model M but very long lasting, with key markings molded in, so they don't wear off. It outlasted any other keyboard I've had since, mainly replaced it because I wanted one in black and cordless.
Now let's Wait for Windows 2000 20th Anniversary Build i guess.

This brought back a few good memories. I still have my original boxed Win 95 (has CD). Had to get it out to have a look, box is a bit squashed but the insides look just as new. I notice with my version that even though it came with a install CD, it also came with sheets of official Microsoft floppy disk labels. Looking closer I notice there are 33 floppy disk stickers in all. I never used them hence they are untouched and still on their backing sheet. I am therefore assuming that my version of Win 95 has the option to generate the floppy disks also, how cool is that :)
As for version, I am assuming its one of the very first run of official releases because the label on top of the box says 050-052-950A 07-09-95. Still has the price sticker on the box £69.33. I was running Win 3.1 at the time and wanted to upgrade. I spent all my money on the win 95 upgrade that I couldn't afford to buy any games so for months and months I just played what games there were on Win 95..ahhh those were the days :)

I have the Boston Acoustics speakers that came with one of those! They're so great I've been using them since they were given to me by a relative, though they're missing the stand legs.
The old days when monitors could easily weigh upwards of 50 pounds...
It's part of why rent to own was successful, since they brought it home and set it up for ya.

Was just reminded of this when I just moved my two Packard Bell 15" CRT monitors into my new apartment over the weekend.... After watching this video I think I'm going to power up both the 486 and Pentium computers
I have a gateway monitor being shipped to me right now and the total package is 60lbs. Fingers crossed this person took this much care because it's going from California to Ohio lol Last CRT I had shipped to me works great, but the way it was packaged is hilarious. 5 layered boxes with a crap ton of news paper and packing peanuts in between each box. It was a 14" PVM but the package was almost 3 times the size and was covered in duct tape lol Took me 10 to 15 minutes to unpackage the thing. I think I'd rather have a shipping crate with a ton of padding like in the video lmao
