Shug, your Euell Gibbons sounded like Walter Brennan's Grandpappy Amos from "The Real McCoys". That was a great show! Thanks for hanging out with us! I had my first negative degree hang of the season out in my back yard. Cold snap in southern New England with a -7F temp. and 30-50 mph winds. I used a Hummingbird Hammock single, which I ran through an old Golite Feather-lite bag and used down pants and jacket, fleece and base layers, and a hot water bottle,just to see if I could stay warm. I took a one pound Montbell down thermal sheet bag inside the Golite as a top quilt. No problem with the temperature, but the hammock is a little small. I could've used my Superior Gear -20 hammock, but that would be almost cheating. I will be taking this lightweight set-up on an Appalachian Trail thruhike attempt the end of March, lightening it up as the weather warms. Wish me luck. I turn 70 this July, by the grace of God. Hang in there, buddy!
Wow! I'd go with theSG -20 in those temps for sure. As I aged I abhor sleeping cold. Did it enough through my adventures growing up. Good luck on the Thru...I get using the Hummingbird for that.

Great video as usual Shug and as the proud owner of one of your hammock prints I feel it is my duty to inform you that I too could not find Dukes mayonnaise anywhere (here in NJ) whether it was a ShopRite or higher end grocer until my wife and I walked into a BIG LOTS. I'm not sure if there are any BIG LOTS in MN but it is generally a housewares type store with a small non refrigerated food section and when I looked down .... THERE THEY WERE! The last store in the world that I thought would've carried Dukes ... Don't tell anyone ... 😉
Lots of food. Tomato bisque and grilled cheese sounds good. I have been eating split pea soup or french onion soup on cold days. Food that's better in the winter than the summer. Thumbs up.
Two things: 1. Shug just makes you smile. (Glad there wasn't a Silky saw accident) 2. I packed a lot this summer, and after watching the joys of winter packing, I gotta try it too!

Another GREAT video Shug! You are a cyber friend, indeed. I was out last week with my Superior Gear set up: used my 40 degree cocoon over the ridge line to keep my face warm, mostly, and hands warm when out of the 'bag', no condensation build up. 10-15 degree low, the last night was incredibly (45mph) windy with icy rain. Whole set up was super stable and warm until guidelines on the shelter (tarp) iced up and slid through the clasps... Slippery half hitch easily stop that- equipment super easy to fuss with, even in the icy/ wet wind at 4am! (Had to pee anyway) and so nice to slip back into it's luxuriant warmth... Superior Gear is my favorite hang these days. kat.

That Boreal 21 saw has a green wood blade. You can get a dry wood blade for it. I only bring dry wood blades since I won't be cutting anything green for a fire.
Yes! Woo buddy! I've used an un-insulated top cover on my Chameleon and it makes a difference in a breeze. I think that zip in insulator is a Superior idea!

Long winter. I'm forced to cold camp or no camping at all. I do kinda love it but I tell my wife that I never stop working doing it other than when I'm sleeping.
I love my bass. Been playing since high school. A long time ago now. It lets your fingers pull the soulful feelings from your mind, body and spirit into the space around you. Lets you share them with others. Awesome feeling and sound.
Been working on getting both fingers going on right hand this week. Always a thing to work on. Fun stuff. I like the floor vibrating through the Fender Rumble 100 amp.
@@shugemery Nice amp. I have the smaller Rumble 40. Still plenty loud. I use to play through an Ampeg 100 head with a 6 x 10 cabinet "back in the day".
@@shugemery Nothing wrong with a Squire. Licensed by Fender, I know you like doing things yourself. Check out Dave's World of Fun Stuff on TH-cam. You can do a setup on your Bass to make it play, feel and sound even better. He helped me a lot.
@@yobentley7274 I will check that out. I've explored the bass set-up on some videos. I reckon down the road I'll be messing with leveling frets, adjusting neck and goofing with action. Had the guy adjust the Squire when I bought it. For now....just picking and getting blisters! Loving it.
@@shugemery Fret leveling, recrowning, end dressing and polishing is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Setting the neck relief with truss rod adjustments, intonation and pickup height make a big difference too. Let me know if you want advice on tools to get before you buy. I have tried a lot in the last 3 years.
My best friend’s daughter just moved from Sacramento CA where it never snows and got up to 116 f last summer to near Minneapolis Minnesota. They have four kids aged 9, 6 and twins aged 1. They have lived in sunny California all their lives. They moved about a week ago, I prayed for them.
The Palmetto State Hangers just had our Frozen Butt Hang, not very cold by Northern standard but cold enough. We tested our gear and had some great experience with fellow hammock campers. I do enjoy your trips and I'm remembering my cold weather camping in western NY, those were the days.

I was out last week with my Superior Gear set up: used my 40 degree cocoon over the ridge line to keep my face warm, mostly, and hands warm when out of the 'bag', no condensation build up. 10-15 degree low, the last night was incredibly (45mph) windy with icy rain. Whole set up was super stable and warm until guidelines on the shelter (tarp) iced up and slid through the clasps... Slippery half hitch easily stop that- equipment super easy to fuss with, even in the icy/ wet wind at 4am! (Had to pee anyway) and so nice to slip back into it's luxuriant warmth... Superior Gear is my favorite hang these days.

That Boreal 21 saw has a green wood blade. You can get a dry wood blade for it. I only bring dry wood blades since I won't be cutting anything green for a fire.

Yes! Woo buddy! I've used an un-insulated top cover on my Chameleon and it makes a difference in a breeze. I think that zip in insulator is a Superior idea!
It adds warmth for sure. And keeps everything in the hammock getting in and out for the nighttime "make yellow snow" breaks.
As an outdoors guy from Florida, I love winter camping once a year when it gets down to a bone-chilling 60 degrees.
I've been cold in Florida at 60 degrees!

Long winter. I'm forced to cold camp or no camping at all. I do kinda love it but I tell my wife that I never stop working doing it other than when I'm sleeping.
I love my bass. Been playing since high school. A long time ago now. It lets your fingers pull the soulful feelings from your mind, body and spirit into the space around you. Lets you share them with others. Awesome feeling and sound.
Been working on getting both fingers going on right hand this week. Always a thing to work on. Fun stuff. I like the floor vibrating through the Fender Rumble 100 amp.
@@shugemery Nice amp. I have the smaller Rumble 40. Still plenty loud. I use to play through an Ampeg 100 head with a 6 x 10 cabinet "back in the day".
@@shugemery Nothing wrong with a Squire. Licensed by Fender, I know you like doing things yourself. Check out Dave's World of Fun Stuff on TH-cam. You can do a setup on your Bass to make it play, feel and sound even better. He helped me a lot.
@@yobentley7274 I will check that out. I've explored the bass set-up on some videos. I reckon down the road I'll be messing with leveling frets, adjusting neck and goofing with action. Had the guy adjust the Squire when I bought it. For now....just picking and getting blisters! Loving it.
@@shugemery Fret leveling, recrowning, end dressing and polishing is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Setting the neck relief with truss rod adjustments, intonation and pickup height make a big difference too. Let me know if you want advice on tools to get before you buy. I have tried a lot in the last 3 years.

My best friend’s daughter just moved from Sacramento CA where it never snows and got up to 116 f last summer to near Minneapolis Minnesota. They have four kids aged 9, 6 and twins aged 1. They have lived in sunny California all their lives. They moved about a week ago, I prayed for them.
Gonna have to invest in boots, hats and gloves!
The Palmetto State Hangers just had our Frozen Butt Hang, not very cold by Northern standard but cold enough. We tested our gear and had some great experience with fellow hammock campers. I do enjoy your trips and I'm remembering my cold weather camping in western NY, those were the days.
