    When there's no one else available to go with, sometimes you just gotta go or it'll never happen. That's hard work going through snow that deep. Sitting out on that lake and enjoying the quiet- it made me take a deep sigh, wishing I was out there. Thanks for sharing with us and I'm glad you were safe.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I do love a solo. Then a trip or two with friends. Then a solo. Solo is easier to film as I can stop and set shots without holding everyone up. Those moments of quiet on the lake were the reason I went. Kinda love the world again. For now.

    Had to stop and comment about the phone bag- I made one, too, last December for going snow tracking. Made out of felt, and made the rim out of alum tawed squirrel skin ( I tanned it a while ago). I hang it around my neck to keep the phone warm, and store a stylus for making GPS location and notes on tracks we see on the app we use. Best thing ever! So when you mentioned yours, I had to laugh, because until someone told me to get a neck pouch to keep my phone warm, I had not thought of that! And rather than buy one, I had to make one. Of course. 😂

    I was born in northern Minnesota and have lived here the majority of my life with proximately 15 years where I lived throughout the United States in much warmer climates. I was always accused of being Canadian because of my accent but as the years went on, and from living down south and east my accent wasn't as strong. Thank goodness. My kids, who are adults now, enjoy making fun of me for certain words that I say with a mixture of a Southern and Eastern accent. Oddly, I don't know how, but you pick up accents without trying. There were many natives in my high school, and they were my friends and I picked up of their some of their accents as well. Which made me stick out like a sore thumb wherever I moved later on. As I watch you camp and Traverse Minnesota in the winter, which is the majority of the year. I admire you as I don't do well in the low temperatures and even though as a child I spent a lot of time outside during the cold Winters... I know that I could not take it anymore. Anybody who has lived in northern Minnesota or Minnesota at all knows what it's like when you step outside and you take in a deep breath your nostrils stick together. As children, we used to have fun by taking a pan of hot water during the winter and walking outside with it, and tossing it up in the air to watch the hot water vaporize in the air before it even comes close to hitting the ground. Now, that is cold. When it is way below zero and the wind chill is even further below zero, any Exposed Skin that is left out 4 for 20 minutes, it will without a doubt get frostbitten. That's why you see people covering their faces and barely even seeing somebody's eyes. The moisture from your breath on your face mask eventually causes a problem in getting a proper breath of air. I remember ice-fishing even in dark houses but also outside by a hole. It was miserable. I have frostbitten my fingers and toes many times. Layers layers layers but it's hard to have layers on your fingers and toes. I admire you for taking on the cold cold winter of Minnesota.

      Long winters here so must embrace that kinda weather. Fun to purposely go out into it. Right now is that muddy thaw and temps all over. Not my favorite time of year here. Thanks for your comment.

Feeling alive is the key to my mental health. :) I pushed my awesome 20deg sleeping bag (WM Ultralite) and HG Econ 20 full-length uq down to -10 by zipping my parka over the foot end, using a zlite pad inside the hammock and a vapor barrier liner bag. Down hood (from my wife’s coat, too :) and down socks from goosefeetgear. Good one, always enjoy the extreme temps documentation. The rawhide snowshoes are a bonus. I'm not seeing you deploy a hammock cover in the extreme temps. In sector 7 they may not be needed. The Dutchware covers made for the Chameleon come in either adjustable venting on the head end or fixed venting. Nice pocket of warmth and extra protection from wind and breezes. The generic aftermarket covers I've tried have been junk; clunky attachment and venting plus claustrophobia issues. Love the statement - "extreme cold and dark - uncomfortable" - yes indeed !

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't like the top covers as I got into hammocks to feel open. Also as I have report before, I get way too much condensation inside hammock socks and top covers and all the ice crystals form inside and fall all over me. Even with venting I could never stop the condensation.
