I was once a simple hammock camper and backpacker. Then, I saw Shug take a canoe trip. Since Saturday, I am now officially the owner of a Swift Keewaydin 14 Pack. Shug, you made me happy. My wallet, not so much.

This is getting me so pumped for my trips booked this September. The first trip will be Missing Link Lake, and it will be my first trip with my father. I have not been there, but he used to go there with my late grandfather. Thanks for sharing.

I wonder if filling airbags with helium would make the canoe any lighter for portaging. Or using an inflatable canoe filled with helium. Compressing the helium may defeat the purpose but still may be lighter than air.

I wear a mask at night so I'm not constantly waking up and looking at my watch. It's an old Army habit.
I pull my hat down over eyes. and peek for first light or gut feel if I tell myself to rise early. Had to beat that wing. I got no watch...

10 years of watching and I never, ever get tired of watching Shug lollygagging in the woods of the BWCA. Thanks for sharing your great times with us Shug! I selfishly want longer videos but gotta let the man enjoy his time out there so I get it haha. Hope you got 10 plus years left of lollygagging! Best to your family and you!

When we use Tuscarosa we always get a tow to American Point. Cuts off half a day of paddling and gets you away from the crowds. This year we are doing North Quetico, so going in from the Canadian side.
Heard of towing but not all that familiar with it. I'm pretty much up just to paddle on. Enjoy that Quetico trip Kurt.
A year ago today we was up there in the BWCA on birch lake. I miss it so much ... Thanks for taking us with you as always!!

It was a right goodie. I've not had the urge to camp since. I like messing around at home in the summer. So I feel a wee behind as well.

Only thing funnier than a clown... a clown tying knots. Shug, I was thinking of you yesterday while grocery shopping, I checked for Peanut Butter when I walked passed the Pop-Tarts. No joy. The bass pluckin' is coming along nicely.
I look at the Pop Tart section every time as well. Always sigh. Thankee on the bass.
My favorite trip so far has been my 60 mile paddle down the Colorado river of Texas. Hammocks and Kayaks just mesh well together. I only wish that my full pack fit onto my kayak, I have to break down my whole bag to fit everything into the hull of my kayak. Also, god forbid I flip everything stays in the yak and dry!
River trip is on my bucket list. Sounds really special going downstream.
Hello Shug ! Always a breath of fresh air in your videos. Them skeeters were mighty intense , I think I heard them trying to carry your camera equipment away. LOL 😆.
I go just expecting the skeeters to be there and be annoying. Sort of like in-laws!
Greetings from NorCal. A guy where I go hiking rigged up his little canoe with oars and a pontoon, he moves faster than a rat on crack. Only problem he faces backwards. Like your vid Shug.
Yessir....I've seen rigs like that. Would be a tougher portage!

Shug, on another subject - hope you caught the British GP. If I remember right, Lando Norris is a favorite of yours. Huge improvement by McLaren for this race. I love Max but good to see more competition out there on the track. Take it easy.

I got up EARLY a lot on this trip. Sun pops out at around 4:30 AM or so.
Shug loving the bass riffs. My bride makes a banana pudding with short bread cookies & tops it with the chessman cookies. It’s oh so good. Loving the sun rise shot.

Did the country fair in Tallahassee years ago. Had a good sweaty time down there. see good BBQ and fish. I seem to recall a lot of Spanish moss in the trees.

Thanks for sharing the journey. I had a two man trip where we had the yoke snapped in the middle. We had three paddles and I had to lash those fresh for every portage because I jury rigged the three paddles we had as a makeshift yoke. It was still a memorable trip down the Petawawa.
Improvising a fix in the backwoods is pretty satisfying righto~~~
You must not have bears there because that breakfast would’ve had them sitting next to you here in the Smokies!
There are but not as human conditioned as the Smokies.

I threw my back out yesterday. I get up this morning, somehow suffered into making a cup of coffee and I sit down on the couch, open up TH-cam and live vicariously through Shug.
Ouch. Would hate to throw out my back on a canoe trip. I keep a lidocaine patch and Doan's Pills in my first aid kit just in case.
@@shugemery I can't figure out what I did. The only thing I had done yesterday morning prior to it hurting was opening a window. I guess I reached in at just the wrong angle...

I never cook on backpack trips but always will on canoe trips.

@shugemery not yet...similar to the rules you guys are under... No open fires of any kind since some time in May, and only fuel canisters for outdoor cooking i think it is. It's so smokey right now that camping would be nasty. Need a few weeks of rain up here and some much cooler weather...not likely in July though.

Longtime fan of your videos, Shug. Finally stopped making excuses and got out there and did some solo hammock (car) camping. Can’t wait to get out there again, maybe even do some backpacking. That paddle worked really well in the windy conditions. Takes a wee less thinking for me.
@@shugemery Feathering those blades are ideal in the wind. Perhaps you can make your way to the Sleeping Giant, just be sure to go through there on a calmer day. Good luck, just remember to weight your stern with the wind behind you.

One question, if i might, I have the same sony hx90v camera you use, mine makes horrible audio in wind. Yours seems to cope better, do you have a dead cat on it or do you record audio separate?

Mine is bad in wind too. I edit out a lot of the bad wind sounds because no one would be able to understand me. I do try to put my fingers over the mic holes though.

It is a sun shirt from Coolibar. Sun block fabric.
8:32 that shell is the remains of a dragon fly larvae. They live undereater in that stage then crawl out of the water and hatch as a dragonfly. Nature's wonder.
I had a feeling as I was seeing many dragonflies. Thankee for clarifying that. Truly a wonder.

Someday...someday I'll catch a fish. I'm pretty blasé with my fishing efforts. Scout training helped with fixing the canoe yoke.
