The video footage here is from Zulu - and it's as good as the music. But wait - there's more.
They did not get actors to play the parts of the Zulu. Instead, they went to the king of the Zulu and asked him if he could find 4000 men willing to play parts in a film about his tribe - and he was like... "Yeah, I guess - it looks like a good idea."
These are genuine Zulu, with their own genuine spear and shield

at isandlwana defensive lines are overextended, poor ammo supply (many soldiers run out of ammo) and they lack of reconnaissance

    • @matthiuskoenig3378
      @matthiuskoenig3378 5 ปีที่แล้ว +174

Zachary firestone at isandlwana the british didn't set up proper defenses as their limited recon had said it was a small zulu force (which turned out to be only one of the 4000 man horns) 2000 guns vs 4000 spears is in the british favour. so they didn't see a need to set up defenses or a proper supply network (if they had drawn up their lines right by their ammo many argue they would have repelled the attack. the zulus still lost 2500 men dead and another 2000 wounded, vs 1300 killed (the zulus killed all the british they captured) with 500 escaping
at rockes drift the british only had 250 men (and the zulus had 4000) and so new they were in worse position and thus set up defenses.
they killed 375 and captured another 500 wounded. while the british lost 17men and a further 15 wounded.
the main british force (about 6000men) who were looking for the zulus heard of the main battle (isandlwana) and headed only to find all the dead bodies (which had also supposedly been defilled) and then rushed to rockes drift. this is one reason why the zulus didn't attack again as the main british force outnumbered them and had guns, and they would be cut off from retreat. we see the zulus left at 7am and the british army arrived at 8am. some sources claim the 500 wounded zulus were then burried alive with their dead as revenge for the defilled men lost the previous day. the other reason the zulus left was because they had dirrect orders not to attack rockes drift (as it was in british land) from the king, and almost 900 lost (plus more that could walk) is already a bad enough thing to have to explain.
in total the british lost 1332 men (dead and wounded) and the zulus lost atleast 5400 men dead and wounded.
so at neither battle did the zulus loose less soldiers then the british did, and the main british army was still alive and would come back (with afew reinforcements) and win every following battle with less then 100 men lost each battle.

I actually own a massive meat cleaver that my great grandma used to kill a Zulu to protect her and her children.
I'm from South-Africa and my great grandparents fought in the Anglo Zulu war. My great grandma was left alone with her two children on their farm while my great grandad fought in the war.
Apparently three Zulus tried to raid the farm house and probably kill her and her children. So she armed herself with a meat cleaver, and when the first Zulu tried to climb through a window she furiously started hacking away at him. He managed to run away but died a few hundred yards from the house. She buried him the next day.
The meat cleaver was passed down the family and is now mine, but up till a few years ago my mom still used it in the kitchen.

The journalist and cameraman are trapped in a civilian house surrounded by IS fighters, and its just incredible how resilient the army was, one soldiers hopped in after getting shot in the foot, bandaged it himself, and hopped back out because their numbers were insufficient. War brings out the worst in humans, but it also brings out some incredible courage at times.

    Sabaton - Rorke's Drift
News that came that morning told that the main force had been slain
Chance for peace and justice gone and all talks had been in vain
A prince had been offended and he has gone the path of war
Now that 1500 men are dead and the Zulu's at the door
    Zulus attack
    Fight back to back
    Show them no mercy and
    Fire at will
    Kill or be killed
    Facing, awaiting
A hostile spear, a new frontier, the end is near
    There's no surrender
The lines must hold, their story told, Rorke's drift controlled
Later on that fateful day as they head towards the drift
Stacking boxes, fortify, preparations must be swift
Spears and shields of oxen hide facing uniforms and guns
As the rifles fire, echoes higher, beating like the sound of drums
    Zulus attack
    Fight back to back
    Show them no mercy and
    Fire at will
    Kill or be killed
    Facing, awaiting
A hostile spear, a new frontier, the end is near
    There's no surrender
The lines must hold, their story told, Rorke's drift controlled
1879, when a few held the line
Back to back, attack, the dead are stacked
Where a last stand was made, and the empire saved
Back to back, attack, the dead are stacked
    Zulus attack

What blows my mind about this movie is that it was made in the 60's. It would have been so easy for the filmmakers to get away at the time with depicting the Zulu as really racist evil stereotypes that want to kill innocent white people. They didn't do that. Instead the filmmakers were extremely respectful to history and did not demonize other side. This movie is pretty much told an unbiased story of what actually happened and rightfully applauds the extreme courage of both sides.

But outflanking gets thrown out the window when they know you are coming, know your tactics, and can kill you from a football field away. Not to mention that there were no "experienced", soldiers in the army that attacked rorkes drift. The army that attacked was the loins of the Zulu, basically the reserve army. People put way too much emphasis on guns in the anglo-zulu war.
Is a gun a better weapon than an iklwa? Yes, but when you're that badly outnumbered, a breach-loader isn't going to do you a whole lot of good before the Zulu close the gap.
Especially considering that when the Zulu are properly structured they have the youngest and fittest sprinting up both flanks to start the melee as soon as possible, while the more experienced force advances up the middle, firing if they had guns as well.

ON THIS DAY: 23 JANUARY 1879
The Battle of Rorke's Drift ended in Natal Province, South Africa during the Anglo-Zulu War.
One of the most famous defences in the history of the British Army, Rorke's Drift was fought in the immediate aftermath of the Zulu kingdom's decisive victory at the Battle of Isandlwana.
A handful of approximately 154-56 British and colonial troops commanded by Lieutenants John Chard and Gonville Bromhead defended the mission station at Rorke's Drift. Against them were 3,000-4,000 Zulu warriors who had broken off from the main force in the aftermath of Isandlwana.
A defensive perimeter was hastily assembled from mealie bags and even biscuit tins. From 4.30pm on 22 January the Zulus continually attacked the British defences in successive waves for 11 and a half hours.
The fighting was bitter and hard-fought with outstanding courage shown on both sides. Despite the superior firepower of the British, the Zulus (who were largely armed with assegai spears) almost overwhelmed the garrison several times. The British themselves fought tenaciously and continually manned the barricades in fierce hand-to-hand fighting. The battle was particularly brutal around the station's hospital, which was eventually set on fire.
The battle ended in the early hours of 23 January with the British still in control of Rorke's Drift. Of the 20,000 available ammunition rounds at beginning of the battle, only 900 remained. The British had casualties of 17 killed and 15 wounded while the Zulus suffered losses of 351 confirmed killed and about 500 wounded. Of the Zulu wounded, many were massacred by the British relief force who showed no mercy after having seen the carnage at Isandlwana.
11 Victoria Crosses were awarded for the battle, including seven for members of the 2nd Battalion, 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot. This was the most ever awarded for a single action by one regiment.
The desperate, but successful defence of Rorke's Drift became quickly celebrated by the British. It has been argued that the battle was particularly useful to emulate compared to their overwhelming defeat at Isandlwana. Nevertheless, as the historian Victor Davis Hanson wrote, "It is difficult to find anything quite like Rorke's Drift, where a beleaguered force, outnumbered forty to one, survived and killed twenty men for every defender lost."

It's not as impossible as it sounds. They had every advantage in terms of quality, literally the only advantage of the Zulu's was their numbers.
The Zulus rushed line infantry head on, tripping and falling over their dead comrades only to fight well trained men with bayonets standing behind fortifications. All the men didn't fire all at once either, there were constant and concentrated volleys going right into a huge blob of Zulus. Each volley left a new ridge of corpses, making it difficult to just run in.
I'm not saying it was not impressive work from the British, but similarily to the Battle of Thermopylae, it's easy to think it was more of a feat than it actually was.

Although the Spartans didn't have the same issues the British did. They lucked into terrain (which they DID have the idea to use) & they also had gear that worked in their favor (armor well beyond what the Persians could easily work against & weapons that would go right through what the Persians where using for protection).
Sure, it would take a good degree of athleticism to do this & some other traits that were handy for this type of fighting- but it wasn't like it gets made out to be. David & Goliath comes to mind- bringing that sling to the duel was like taking a .45 to a knife fight. Vikings, too. Sure, they worked out & were capable fighters- but it's a big guy swinging a weapon he could afford that happens to work well with some extra weight on top of the brawn.

Honestly, I figure I'd rather have a blade (that I can access quickly) if I were within arm's reach. Dealing with some instigator that's in a car while I'm on the side of the road, not so much. People forget about the car, not just the person that's possibly got a gun pointed at the door ready to shoot through it. Makes a good case against gun restrictions & for a non-gun dueling tradition, in my opinion.

    • @sheldon-cooper
      @sheldon-cooper 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

@@naughtydog201 yes. These two battles are a good example of a battlefield making all the difference. The men stationed at Isandlwana had no guards posted to warn of an attack and the ground itself was flat and open. Perfect for the zulus traditional tactic (the horns of the buffalo) to decimate the camp, plus it was the main zulu force counting beyond 10,000 warriors whilst only 1500 British soldiers were there
On the other hand, Rorke's drift was a small encampment with proper buildings and ( while somewhat hastily thrown together) had a defensive wall that provided a good perimeter for the roughly 160 British troops to guards comfortably. A smaller force of zulu's numbering around 4000 attacked Rorke's drift but their preferred tactic didn't work because the british were behind a wall and could fire in all directions with ease

    • @naughtydog201

Sheldon Cooper Good man. Just had to check; many do not know of it. Goes to show what a difference strategy and competent commanders make.
I do find it rather irritating that the English have always immortalised Rorke's Drift but largely forget Isandlwana. I guess it is normal for any country to want to brag of their victories and not their losses. We are the same.
I visit both battlefields often. Amazing part of my country's history. You'd be surprised at how plain the land is. If you didn't know the history, you'd think nothing ever happened there. I guess the same holds true for any battlefield visited today.
If you haven't before, go check out Zulu Dawn (1979). Great film and largely forgotten. Probably because of the reasons I outlined.

@@naughtydog201 The more annoying part is that other more intense and important Anglo-Zulu War battles were largely forgotten.
The Battle of Kambula was considered the turning point of the war. Then there's the Siege of Eshowe, a rather boring skirmish, but reading about the British and Zulu plans and preparations to one up the other was intense. There's also the Battle of Gingindlovu which showed showed how superior the british were and how one sided the war really was when they weren't fooling around like the last time.
These three battles would be great sequels for a Zulu movie series.

I want to clear some things up. To anyone thinking this is racist, depicting the British as the good guys and the zulus has savages protecting their home, it's not. This took place in south africa, which was a british coloney. The zulus, which were an empire themselves, wanted to colonize south africa for themselves. The zulus had more men and guns aswell, so this isn't a one sided race war. Please be respectful for both sides.
