  • This rabbit arrived on March 22 at around ten days old. Wild rabbits are very difficult to raise, nearly 75% do not make it. This one beat the odds, grew up strong, and was released back into the wild where she belongs.

    Our Mission
Founded in 1997 in Cedar City Utah, we are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, wildlife and environmental education, and the development of the Cedar Canyon Nature Park.
    Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release
The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100 sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal, but for those that cannot be released due to disabilities, the Cedar Canyon Nature Park (CCNP) can provide them with a permanent home in a natural setting while enhancing our visitors educational experience at the park.
    Informing, Educating and Inspiring
The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000 people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations to enjoy.
    Martin Tyner
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.
“Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.”
Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry.
Through a heartwarming collection of true stories he describes his challenging transformation from a shy dyslexic teenager, to the founder and CEO of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.
    Cedar Canyon Nature Park
The CCNP is 22.6 acres of beautiful canyon property donated by Pacificorp, in Cedar City, Utah. We are in the process of developing a permanent wildlife rescue facility and Nature Park for the children of Utah. Sitting on the transition point between the Colorado Plateau and the Great Basin, the CCNP’s mission is focused on fostering appreciation, knowledge and wise stewardship of the Colorado Plateau and Great Basin environments, which include wildlife, botany, geology, history, and native culture.

I wonder if their digestive systems are so delicate because in the wild they rely on the mom to feed them her pre poo. Not sure for the technical name, but rabbits eat the first round of their poo that comes out very soft and helps give all the bacteria biome they use to absorb nutrients...The mom's usually have to introduce the good bacteria to the babies, but maybe she was old enough to have had that already and it increased her chances...

I rescued two cotton tails successfully. I had no idea what the survival is. They're favorite was dandelion greens. A crow raised their nest by my home. I had separate them because one of them was always trying to harm its sibling, idk? I called Dennis & other one Pearl. After 3 weeks, they doubled in size, I released them. Boy, 2 out 2 and they both survived with such odds against them.
Martin & Susan seem to beat the odds more than anything else. May God bless you!

I've rescued many cotton tails around my house because they seem to always make their nest in our dog pen and one of the dog's seems to always find the nests and tries to eat all the babies before I can get to her. Luckily I was able to get to some of the babies at different times when there's a nest. Sadly even though I may save some babies from the dog, they would still be too young and within a few day's they would die even when I feed them KMR milk and try my best to keep them warm. I've had the hardest time keeping the babies that barely have any fur and their eyes still sealed shut alive. I have been able to save and release about 10 rabbit's over the years. They're very difficult to keep alive so they can be released. Thank you so much for everything you do for wildlife and helping to keep them safe and to thrive.

When I was young- (high school---in the days of the dinosaurs), my dog used to find cottontail nests and bring home tiny baby rabbits almost every spring. ALL with their eyes still shut.
It was my job to raise them. Heat pad and round the clock bottle feedings...then grass as they got older.
No matter how much I handled them, they ALL turned into nasty little "Thumpers".
That was when I knew they should be released..
This little girl brings back memories--she's adorable....good job!

I am so glad to see she is very leery of people and has grown so much. How cute. I had a litter born under my shed and I saw the cuties when they peeked out at me. For some reason they have disappeared and I wonder if it isn't because of the 50 cats the neighbor has. I loved watching the little ones race around and play till they saw me then they disappeared. so cute!

Question: How can you tell it's a girl? Their mammory glands don't develop at least for 2-4 months, and then they are ready to procreate. I'm a long time rabbit person and owner and you definitely can't tell on a domestic baby rabbit.

I saved a wild rabbit from a dog (in Florida)! he was about 5 days old when I found him! He grew up in a house! Now he is 5 months old. And I'm afraid that he will not survive in the wild after living in the house ((In a couple of weeks we are moving to North Carolina - and I would like to organize an aviary for him in the yard, but I'm afraid that he might be cold in other climates! Dear Southwest Wildlife Foundation. I live in the Pacific Northwest. Recently I found a cottontail rabbit on the side of the highway. I tried to scare her/him into the bushes but he did not move, so I picked him up, put him in my car. I brought him home put him in a large box with water, hay, and some romaine lettuce. Put a warm blanket on him. He was not moving much but started to drink some water. Did not eat. I put the box in my bedroom with me. In the morning he was dead. What have I done wrong? What I should have done? Thank you.

It's difficult to know what the rabbit may have needed. Generally, try to contact a local rehabber or call fish & game or the police non-emergency line for some help. Often there just aren't the resources around to help.

Maybe it was released a bit too soon? It's still very small. Especially it did not learn to identify the threat in the wild, it was probably eaten by that hawk on a pole in no time.

We saw a hawk grab a rabbit and take it up in the air. It dropped it from like 150 feet. Dove down and got it back and jumped up on a round bale and started feasting. Me and the neighbors debated it took it in the air and dropped it to kill it. The others said it accidentally dropped it cause it can kill it easy without using gravity . Curious to what you think and know ? Thanks !

    • @stvbrsn
      @stvbrsn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

My guess, he dropped it accidentally. Raptors are surprisingly light for their size, a hawk can probably only carry about 1.5 pounds into flight comfortably.
