He is not mentioned as doing this song sthat iremeber. Just found out. He even did it with the controversial lyrics. I reckon that was more the live show with The big shots.
Ray, for several decades, has recorded using multi-tracks where every instrument is on one separate audio track and the vocal is on it's own track so if he chose to he could sing live on television, as he did here on his 1970 television series, but have the studio recording of the music accompany him. Ray was among the first recording artists to utilize multi-tracking. He's always seeking new ways of recording or striving for improvements in the recording process rather than resisting technological advancements. Paraphrasing one of his comments in an interview: "When you have the technology at your fingertips why not take advantage of it's possibilities and capabilities?".
Ray Stevens' OG cover of this song is amazing. Anyone who thinks otherwise is nuts. I'd be honored to see him cover it again in 2023.

He didn't do a cover he was the original singer, the first one to sing it. Johnny Cash did the cover. The only version that made Kris cry.
Kris said this was his favorite version of his song. Ray spent like 35 hours in the studio recording it. It brought Kris to tears.

John Cash was the 2nd singer to cover it, with the most charting success.
