- 1 John is one of the books of the Bible that if we don't accurately interpret it, we will come away with poor theology and bad application to our lives. The apostle's purpose in writing this letter was not to check to see if one is a genuine believer or not but rather to see if the one professing to be a Christian is in fellowship with God.
In this video, Pastor Danny explains what 1 John 5:13 means according to the context of the letter. Much of the discussion with this verse surrounds whether "these things I have written" is referring to the entire letter, or merely a portion. Danny makes a strong case that when John writes "these things," he is referring back to what he's just written in chapter 5 and not the entire letter. Once we realize that, we can truly have the blessed assurance of our salvation, not because of us, but because of our great God and Savior!
