For now, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has appointed Ebrahim Raisi's vice president Mohammad Mokhbar as interim president. But many say, that Mokhbar, despite close ties to the supreme leader, is not viewed as a potential contender for the presidency. Who will be Iran's next president? Two facts about the deceased president, Mr. Raisi, whom Mr. Marandi lionizes: 1) Raisi won in a presidential race in which all the famous or charismatic reformists/democrats/leftists/liberals were disqualified from running, thus assuring his success in the race. 2) Raisi was part of a three-member panel that in 1988 executed prisoners belonging to several leftist rebel or opposition groups under peculiar circumstances: all the prisoners had been previously tried, convicted, and given prison terms. Now their old sentences were ignored and they were summarily executed as apostates if they did not repent and affirm belief in Islam. Several thousand were thus executed. This was one of the darkest human rights incidents in the twentieth century and certainly the worst in modern Iranian history.
