I have no words😢 I read in the morning he was in high spirits.👍👍 I saw last night he was gone😮😮 There'll never be another. I watched him for most of my life. RIP Barry Humphries. Thanks for the lifetime of laughs 💔❤❤❤🇭🇲
RIP Dame Edna. Your legacy of laughter will not soon be forgotten. You made an entire generation happy, none could ask for a better way to be remembered. 😢
My favourite comedian of all time. You made me laugh so much I cried and now you've left they are tears of sadness. Thank you for the laughter and for the legacy. For all of us that loved you we will remember you with fondness forever. ❤
R.i.p Dame Edna you were such a fantastic comedian and actor you brought lots of joy and laughter to many people including myself , such a brilliant entertainer could watch ur shows all day . May your legacy live on ❤
Isnt it strange...people loved Dame Edna. NO ONE wanted to shut her down. No hate speech against her. No grabbing the kids and panicking. And YET Dame Edna was a man. He dressed as a woman. We didnt care. We loved her!!! We dont have anything against drag comedy. Its the people who want to hurt children that are the problem. Dame Edna youre a headliner here and in heaven. 💖
Yeah, nah. Barry was an actor, not a drag queen nor a female impersonator. He's following theatre tradition in line with the Elizabethan era where males played both male and female characters.
Agreed, Anthony. To add, the key difference is the fact that Barry Humphries was a heterosexual actor. Though he had several characters, Dame Edna was the one that truly connected with the public. She was an acid-tongued older woman built entirely to spew satirical social commentary _but was never threatening._ Though there are modern drag queens that portray their drag personas as characters (Varla Jean Merman, BenDeLaCreme, and Jaymes Mansfield among them), without the sexual element that many still find fault in, the generations that came to love Dame Edna felt much more open to embracing the character. Edna had a detailed backstory and was never referred to as anything but a woman. It's a credit to Humphries that she became so real to so many people that it was easy to forget that she was a man in a purple wig and harlequin glasses. The character has undoubtedly inspired drag queens all over the world (myself included), but late in his life, Humphries made it clear that there were also considerable differences with his political views. Within the last couple of years of his life, Barry Humphries made some comments that indeed landed him in hot water. Among them the fact that what the media now refers to as _sexual harrassment_ today was called _courtship_ in his day. When pressed about his personal opinions on the transgender community, he reportedly waved it off as something he saw as _"a trend."_ Most shocking was his referral to those who had undergone sexual reassignment surgery as "mutilated men." The most fascinating part of this is the fact that if he had been wearing that lilac wig and harlequin glasses, he would have not only gotten away with making these statements - he would have likely elicited laughs. As Edna, he could get away with virtually _anything...._ and he often _did._ Upon making these comments without the persona of Dame Edna, the public and the media effectively "cancelled" him. Perhaps his worst chastisement was the fact that one of the most prestigious awards bestowed for outstanding Australian comedians that was created in his honor had his name stripped from it because of these comments. I've no doubt it was devastating to him. Humphries made a few brief comments about the controversy without making a definitive apology. He _did_ challenge the _interpretation_ of his words, insisting they were taken out of context and primarily directed at only one individual (Caitlyn Jenner, who's equally divisive in the trans community), but he also reminded audiences that different morals and unpopular opinions are to be expected, if not accepted, from someone his age. For a dazzling career that spanned nearly _seventy years,_ it's unfortunate that a good amount of the press coverage he received in his last years were weighed down by these controversies, but it does seem the media is content to credit him for the laughs brought the world through his characters. As both a longtime fan and someone who identifies as transgender, I don't see the point in having a few poorly-worded comments eclipse an unparalleled career that brought so much joy to so many people. The uproar over his comments hasn't been absent among the tributes the media has aired, but they were instead a brief mention. Though his words caused a lot of pain - particularly from those who loved Dame Edna as long as I have - a brief mention is all they should be at this point. We can pick up the debate later, but for now we only need to be thankful for one man's talent and how it kept us captivated for so many years.
21:00. “I think I could be generous. On the other hand, my revenge could be terrible”. Brilliant brilliant brilliant. Gets right to the heart of the woman.
I ve just found out what a remarkable memory Barry must have had...here he stands as Dame Edna talking for minutes on end, throwing those jokes at us at an indredible rate, jokes which have to be delivered with acute precision and timing for the sake of the comic effect...one can only marvel
I was privileged to spend an evening with Dame Edna during her Final Farewell Tour at the Los Angeles Ahmanson Theatre in 2015. It was blissful evening with the brilliant and magnificent treasure, Barry Humphries and his beyond-delightful persona, Dame Edna... truly a night I have and will never forget. He was an absolute one of a kind and a gift to us all. RIP, you funny man.
I love Dame Edna so much. Such a talent and genius! He will be missed so much but never forgotten! Thanks to TH-cam etc.We can watch her all the time Thanks for the laughs! RIP wonderful Dame Edna!!🙏🙏♥️♥️
Barry's comedic wit and timing were unrivaled. He was something special not just a comedic entertainer with outlandish characters. He was a VERY well read learned and educated man who knew about MANY different cultures. I don't think anyone will ever come close too matching him in that regard. Barry THANK YOU for all the wonderful memories you created. To do what you accomplished was certainly not easy but you made it seem so through your perseverance and genius. I hope and pray your in a better place putting a big smile on the lord's face. God bless my friend.
I remember watching this with my favourite uncle. He had the most infectious and hearty laugh. It was a blast and the most hilarious comedy ever.So uplifting ❤
She made me happy every time I listened to her... doing the dishes, taking a shower, sharing the humor with my daughter... Hoping to see her when she performed R.I.P. Dame Edna
An absolute comedy legend could get away with anything while being interviewed. Plus, seeing so many British icons on this show was incredible. Bob Hoskins, Esther Rantzen, Barry Norman, Frank Carson, Kenny Everett, and Lofty from Eastenders many of which are no longer with us. Thank you for posting this, made me laugh incredibly loud.
Dame Edna will keep heaven in tears of laughter forever. It's definitely our huge loss, but Heaven's huge gain. When it's my time, I want to spend it with my family and Dame Edna. An incredible talent. Rest in Humor!!!
April 29 2023 I hope that a museum will be made with all the dresses and videos of Dame Edna. One of a kind and very Difficult to imitate. REST in peace. DAME EDNA you are True royalty. And May God help and heal everyone AMEN SHALOM ALELUYA
There’s never been anyone like Barrie Humphries. When he slips into character, that character is all you see. He makes them so believable. Pure genius. He didn’t just make me laugh, he made me laugh so much my sides ached.
I can't help but think of the countless hours, days, years of schooling, performances, writing, thought, practice -- all of it -- that it took for Barry Humphries to do this. He was a marvelous talent. The world not only misses him, but needs him. RIP my friend.
Brilliant to see this previously hidden gem from a relatively early period of Dame Edna/BH UK TV career a year before the end of terrestrial TV in 1989 when we only had a handful of channels. Thanks for sharing. Apart from the indomitable Dame Edna with razor sharp wit we are shown a really great audience of the good and the great of that time and era PLUS are reminded of what a loss it was when LWT was gobbled up into Carlton et al. Thanks for sharing this.
Yeah, because the last thing that Dame Edna worked with LWT is her Neighbourhood Watch series from 1992 and 1993, she stopped making her own shows after 2007's Dame Edna Treatment and continued making guest appearances and live performances until she died with her performer, Barry Humphries.
OMG. Even after all these years, I cried like a baby - from laughing - at that. The lip readers' bit is sheer genius. And when she compared Ringo's drumming to a 3-year-old playing a few saucepans . . .
Farewell Dame Edna. You will be greatly missed - thanks for all the laughs you gave the world
