I bought a bottle of this several months ago and absolutely love it. Unlike you I happen to like the opening but I agree that the real magic is in the dry down. And I tend to gravitate towards beast mode fragrances. I'm a go big or stay home sort of person. Skin scents just don't cut it for me, no matter how good they smell. Sure, like most professionals I have office safe fragrances that don't gas people out when you walk into a room. But when I am out and about on my own time, there is no substitute for beastly fragrances. Santal Royal is a fantastic fragrance that presses all the right buttons for me. Possibly the best fragrance I have purchased in the last 12 months. Another from that line not to be missed is Bois Mystérieux.
It's become my absolute favorite at the moment and yes it's beast mode to the max and I have gotten a compliment from it. I love the opening too! Amazing stuff.

Great review AC. Had to laugh and completely agree with you regarding projection and sillage on this thing. A colleague at work wore this all through last winter and I can concur that this thing is absolutely nuclear ☢️ You could smell them 10 mins after they’d left the office! Great winter fragrance though!
Hahaha some people get this aspect so wrong don't they? the trick is to allow people to walk into your scent bubble and be amazed rather than announcing themselves over the megaphone :)

AC, Got my sample today as sandal lover like you. This one is a gem in dry down. Revisiting your review. With some extra money one day will buy a bottle one day. Guerlain gives you back what you pay sometimes more. Truly Royale.

I've had this one for a while. It definitely lasts a long time but I don't get a lot of projection. It might be my chemistry. It's a very nice fragrance. Not sure anyone will ever need 4 ounces plus. A 50 ml would've been enough with how strong it is.
So glad you got around to this fragrance AC it was love at first sniff for me and it is very long lasting which is a bonus. very underrated scent and needs to be talked about more
The first line was Les Deserts d'Orient (2012) which included Encens Mythique, Songe and Rose Nacree, all in 75ml and a retail price around 275 USD. Then they discontinued all and in 2014 launched Les Absoluts d'Orient, in 125ml and at 200 USD retail (still glass bottles though!). Songe (Bois Mysterieux) and Encens made it to the new line. Hope to see your take on the rest, cheers!
Love this line so much everyone of them. I wish I got more oud out of this on me. I get rose, peach, ylang and a bit of oud for like 30mins then its all sandalwood, monster sandalwood(not complaining) and leather 👌 its fantastic. The rose and sandalwood remind me of santal majiscule from serge lutens in scent but this is waaay more powerful.
Wow Jeremy, You get notes that are so different to what I get mate. I get no Leather, Peach or Ylang Ylang 😶. I guess my skin is amping up the oud and suppressing everything else. I have to try the SL mate. I have heard that also has a note of cacao.

Excellent description AC. I do enjoy this one, but never owned a bottle. Suppose my attention has been diverted by L'homme Ideal Extreme and Royal Extract II lately. Too many new releases from Guerlain. And no stores in which to test them 😭

Hi AC. Want to buy Patchouli Ardent and or Santal Royal which one do you recommend. ATH has given a 10/10 for Patchouli Ardent. I have Bois Mysteriuex and Encens Mythique . Can you advise . I have many Oud Rose combos too . I love Sandalwood though.

I had test this guerlain line in store only two perfumes stand out santal royal and oud essential I spray one on each arm and take my tour of the mall then I choose oud essentiel it reminds me of MFK oud line and I still happy with it Dear AC I'm writing this with armaf club de nuit intense in my hand yesss it's 90 % smoky avantus old batches but after the dry down not before not up close but in the air around you I received prada l'homme absolu I do not have original prada l'homme nor the intense but for this one it have two stages first hour it's sopy spicy iris very nice then it turn to some thing close to sopy light version of TF oud wood elegant and professional for office it's killer actually I keep it in my office performance is good to very good Thank you and good night

AC sir , I was trying to layer some of my Oud oil/perfume with some other oil/perfume and today I got a good blend (Kouros with Deep oud not expensive from lataffa Oud Blanc) it's wow of course deep snaky but not at all rosy by any means but rich -aromatic-animalic-deep which has a fougere-Chypre with deep oriental touch. May be writing something unnecessary but I am exited to let you know so :) :), but I really wish if you can try the Rave Oud Blanc it's nice non synthetic , it'srealy deep - leathery- tamarindy sour with some sweet nuances but most importantly not rose combo

AC, are you sure about information from the beginning of the review? According to my knowledge LES ABSOLUS D'ORIENT collection incorporated so far 2 scents from Les Déserts d'Orient collection and that's all. Songe d'un Bois d'Ete -> reactivated as Bois Mystérieux and Encens Mythique D'Orient -> reactivated as Encens Mythique, and the 3rd one (Rose Nacree du Desert) wasn't reactivated so far. LES ABSOLUS D'ORIENT collection has no relation with Les Parisiens collection and L'Art et la Matiere collection.
Not good to the reviewer. Your experience of it may be completely different. I happen to disagree about the opening. There's nothing wrong with it. He says it smells like a generic rose/oud because he has smelled a boatload of those. Most people don't even know what oud is!
I really like this line lthough I onlyhave 2 that i love ambre and encens, the others all of them have something that i don't love, this one, is my least favorite exactly because of that typical oud rose intro that lasts for ever (also very scratchy)

Depends on your personal taste and patience mate. I am Ok as I know that the dry down is just superb!

This is bunch of rose and oud, i don't get any sandalwood not even in drydown therefore the name is misleading
