    The purple bloom birdeater is one of the most beautiful species of tarantulas, and is a popular pet... but how common are they in the wild? I've been looking all around Ecuador hoping to finally come across one of these giant, vibrant spiders, but no luck. Finally, we have a strong lead and some help in our search. Will we catch a purple bloom?

    Here at MyWildBackyard we investigate the secrets of the natural world- secrets that can be hidden in our very own backyards! I want to share the incredible world of insects, spiders and other wildlife with you and inspire you to explore your curiosity. Get out there, and find your adventure!
    For those who read the description- we've updated the channel! I'm working on adding more features to videos to better expand our conversations about the secrets we find in the natural world! Introducing the Creature Tier System! There are four rankings:
    1. Staple - These are the lowest tier creatures. They are the most common species in a given habitat, and while they're not boring, they're really only exciting when you're exploring a new habitat and you haven't seen them before. Not something to write home about.
    2. Neat - These are a step up from Staple. They don't make your entire day, but they are worth taking a closer look at when found. Definitely can be exciting to have a productive day finding many Neat species.
    3. Wild - These are exciting to find. Whether they have interesting defensive features that offer a nice challenge in the field, are particularly cool looking, or maybe a little bit rare, Wild species aren't necessarily the MOST memorable of encounters, but they definitely make your day when you see them. An adventure featuring many Wild species will truly be memorable.
    4. Gem - These are special. Usually involving extremely interesting biology and significant rarity, Gem species are animals that you really do not see every day. These species can make your whole adventure, and will be very memorable.

      Campina Grande Salmon Pink Bird Eater...2nd largest species. I got mine when she was the dime sized and she quickly grew into a beautiful girl. She was easily as heavy as my Goliath with close to the same leg span and lived 14 yrs. As an adult, she would eat only full grown live mice. She was an expert at getting them thru the skull and neck. Probably my favorite species.

    I’ve had a horrible case of arachnophobia my entire life. It got so bad at one point that I would actually faint at the sight of ANY spider 🕷️. That made life miserable, so I began a long process of learning about spiders in hopes that I would at the least get better. I have watched 1,000s of hours of videos made by reputable tarantula hobbyists and scientists. Since then, I can actually stand back and admire these creatures. Programs like yours only help. I don’t care to be surprised by them, and couldn’t be “up close and personal yet “, but I am fascinated now. Who knows what the future may bring? Y’all have a blessed day!

      Start keeping jumping spiders, I was in the same situation and did the same thing then began keeping jumping spiders of all kinds. Now I really don't have a fear of any spiders. I am within 4 feet of about 400 spiders and 1200 within 15 feet because 3 of my female jumpers had several egg sacks hatch this year so I have 1/3rd right next to me in the room I'm in now and the rest in the room I sleep in next door. I absolutely love jumping spiders now and have about a dozen other species I plan to get once we move to our new house. I want to get a few huntsman spiders, 2 six eyed sand spiders, a bunch of velvet spiders, and there are several tarantula species I want to get as well.

      Yeah dude I’d love to see your reaction to herping out there! Snakes are a bit tougher to come by, but just being immersed in the biodiversity is incredible. You and Nick would love the cloud forest, dry forest is hit or miss. Cerro Blanco (where we saw these tarantulas) is pretty good, just gotta get a good tour guide and a little bit of luck. One of our outings here a different tour group came across one of the Ecuadorian coral snakes. We didn’t get to see it unfortunately but just goes to show how fleeting the encounters are!

      Pamphobeteus species are actually widely available now, its only the males that display the color usually but the females are a rather large spider. Pamphobeteus are some of the largest tarantulas in the world actually, being comparable to a bird eater in size.
      They are among the easiest tarantulas to breed and keep as they have great appetites, the females are massive and the males display amazing colors so its quite a nice species.

      Thanks so much man! I’d love to fully discover a new species! This one is under review, so it’s a “new” species but scientists are aware of it, my guess is it’ll get named something related to where it was found or its coloration. Dude, that is a *gorgeous* spider. Hopefully the hobby world lets these guys do their thing in the wild. It’s one thing to breed captive specimens. It’s a completely different matter when a rare, valuable tarantula gets hunted in the wild…which we’ve often seen in the past. Granted, things have gotten better in recent years. This might be an interesting case where, if the males are colorful and pretty, they eventually become more sought after than females…which is usually the opposite since females get larger and live longer lives. Always stoked to find out about a cool new tarantula species…always a little apprehensive about their fate upon being discovered.

    • @MyWildBackyard
      @MyWildBackyard  ปีที่แล้ว

      It wasn’t a great b roll shot, but you can see if you zoom in on her face there are little bubbles in the front. Basically, crabs have gills and need to absorb oxygen from water to breathe. The bubbling is sorta like frothing the water they’re carrying next to their gills to oxygenate it and circulate it through so they can breathe effectively!

    You can tell by the size of the abdomen that Gold Tarantula was ready for a meal. Are you ever worried they might be more prone to bite when hungry and out hunting? I know she doesn't equate you with prey, but still. Awesome stuff. The Purple Bloom Birdeater almost sounds like a cryptid. But you found a beautiful one. Congrats! You seem to have a knack for knowing what other cool critters to show us, like the mountain crab. I never would have thought to see a crab in that environment.

    • @MyWildBackyard
      @MyWildBackyard  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So to address the food question first, I’d say probably not. They need that venom for their food, and if they don’t save it they may not have any when actual prey wanders by. So a hungry spider is likely a less aggressive spider!
      Honestly it’s kinda the beauty of TH-cam- I notice stuff in the environment that I think is cool, and I do my best to share it. Having an audience that thinks the same things are cool means they see it and are like HEY THATS REALLY COOL! 😂 Gotta love the internet for that. Really a beautiful thing.

    Tarantulas have retractable claws on the tip of each leg, that’s both arboreal, terrestrial, and fossorial. They’re fascinating. Also the Ecuadorean gold you picked up was a male due to the tibial hooks and the “boxing gloves” pedipalps. Love your content.

    I’m really enjoying your videos. The Wolf spider and this were awesome. Keep it up. I’m learning to overcome some fear here I have of them. Blame Arachnophobia the movie I shouldn’t have watched as a kid but that’s the root cause I think. I don’t kill or hurt spiders I just go the other way or relocate them.
    Come home one night from work when I lived on lake Tobo in Macon Ga to a massive Wolf spider in the bathtub. I had zero idea how it got there but the thing was pushing large Tarantula size. I didn’t know you could handle them the way you did however, me not being a professional, and the fear that I had inside me I made the best decision to find a large piece of cardboard which it actually chilled on and I took it down by the water and let it go by a tree. The entire time the wifey asking me to kill it and I told her hell no, all the fear I was going through and my adrenaline pumping I found a weird fascination with it and respected it. Set em free don’t kill them.
