I have often wondered why being all wet when they get out of the hot water isn't an issue. I would think that it would cause them to lose body heat pretty quickly
From what I understand, their coats have several layers. The outermost layer gets wet, but the innermost layer of fur stays basically dry. When they get out, they just shake the water off like a dog.
“Ew we can’t keep sharing the bath water with monkeys!” Usual human response: “Let’s drive them away/kill them!” The Japanese response: *”Let’s build them their own spa!”* ❤

Currently in Japan, deforestation is not done to expand farmland. Rather, even farmland that could be used due to population decline is being abandoned. Japan's agriculture is in decline, and wild boars and monkeys are causing damage to abandoned farmlands. They travel through abandoned farmland and descend from the mountains. Depopulated rural areas cannot compete with herds of monkeys. They are steadily expanding their habitat, not only stealing vegetables and fruits from fields, but also encroaching on urban areas. Also, they are protected by law and there is no fear of being killed, and there are no animals that prey on them in Japan. In other words, there has never been a better time for Japanese macaques than now.
Lol I'm from Japan and when my family was visiting a rural area a monkey came and tried to snatch my grandma's purse! I can't remember if they actually took it or not but they can be quite cheeky, they're very cute for sure.
There's more to that story about the Inn hot spring; apparently until shortly before, they had lived in a place with natural hotsprings but were forced out (and closer to humans) because of developments. Seems like a myth to me -they had probably already been bathing in the hot springs, in their original habitat.
Thanks for the memories, Animalogic Crew. I was at that exact location in Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park in Yudanaka back in 2015. It’s such a charming little town full of kind folk. Thanks for bringing back the warm fuzzies. :)
It's so crazy how they control access to hot tubs based on hierarchy and have lower cast "servant" monkeys bring them things and groom them while they relax.
The Shikoku monkeys are fierce and can be very aggressive, especially because humans fed them on occasion and their numbers grew so much that now they come down the hills and mountains, to ravage homes on the hillsides of Tokushima prefecture. They're hilarious but deceptively so. They're also a sign of healthy forests.
@@nullmojo7483 if you’d watched the video you’d have learned that humans have been consistently encroaching on and destroying natural habitats and territories for a few decades, if not centuries now.
That's why shouldn't feed wild animals in the place as they will get desperate for food from humans. It's exactly why bears become aggressive when people start feeding them.

the temp of the water probably keeps them warm for a bit after getting out. from experience I can say it feels pretty nice to get out of the hot tub when it's freezing outside. the residual warmth is enough.
I've read a reply to a similar comment that says apparently they have distinct layers to their coat, while the outer layer gets wet the inner lays don't or perhaps not as much, so they just have to shake the excess water out.
Wow, Japanese Macaques have to be one of the most adaptable monkeys on the planet, also could you talk about Asian Giant Hornets? I'm taking a beekeeping class and they were discussing about them.
One question though, how the hell do they dry off? Idk i feel like if i get out of a hot tub at -15C i would freeze to death or need to get back in well before i got even close to drying out, and i can't imagine their fluffy fur makes the drying go any quicker... i guess there must be a trick like slowly getting out or staying long enough for there body temp to be very high or something like that
From what I've found apparently they have an inner layer of fur that doesn't get wet somehow (maybe it's hydrophobic like wax paper? I dunno), and so when they get out all they have to do is shake off water from the outer layer of fur like a dog would do.
