  • I talk about why I still collect DVDs and why they are better than streaming services. If you’re fed up with streaming services, now’s a great time to rebuld a DVD or Blu-ray collection again. With cheap prices on the second hand market, there’s never been a better time to buy DVDs.

4 reasons to buy DVDs/Blu rays over digital copies:
    1. You actually own the copy and no one can take it away from you. Unless your house gets burglarised, but that's actually less likely to happen than the company being a jerk.
    2. The quality is always better, particularly on blu-ray disc. An Internet connection for HD just isn't always reliable. Plus the service has full control over it.
    3. You get more bonus features
    4. You can sell the film if you don't like it

Physical media wins hands down as far as I’m concerned. Streaming services can and do totally remove content and edit / censor stuff from time to time. With discs you get the movie or series and frequently extras, interviews and deleted scenes. You can also watch it anytime you want to. Some older, rare and OOP stuff will simply never make it onto streaming channels!

As a child, I collected VHS tapes sometime in the early 2000s I got rid of all my VHS tapes and started collecting DVDs. I regret getting rid of some of those VHS tapes since they never made it to DVD and probably about 2006 or so I started collecting Blu-ray’s. My collection now has over 6000 titles and I love it. Unfortunately there’s a ton of stuff that I also enjoy on streaming that has not made it to physical media. I am still waiting for season three of Stranger Things. Hopefully soon it’ll come out with a really fancy box set like I did for the first two. How to plan on getting rid of my streaming it is expensive and I don’t find anything on there I want to watch.

Streaming has a place, but so does physical media. We need both. I am finding some old TV show that are only available on streaming. With streaming it costs less to stream a show than to put it on DVD. Shows like "The Girl With Something Extra" with Sally Field will never be released on DVD. There have been others too. But again, DVDs need to be available too.

    • @patrickmartin4996
      @patrickmartin4996 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

If we did not have streaming many old TV shows, we would never see. I am an old TV buff. I would like to have everything on DVD. I generally do, as I can record onto DVD from any source. But a lot of off the wall stuff will never be on DVD, as few would buy it. Being into classic TV, I prefer buying it on DVD, if available. But if it isn't, I will take it in any form I can get it in. A another example is the Disney Vault. Disney has never released most of that on DVD, and probably never will. I have gotten a lot of old TV concerts off streaming that were never released on media either. I constantly look for old TV shows I liked as a kid. I have quite a list, which will never be on DVD. I also try to find the old classic shows U.S. shows never released in the U.S., but released in Australia or the UK. They are in Regions 2 or something else. I even have a multi-region DVD player that can handle PAL and regions. The old show "Kentucky Jones" from 1964 has never been released in the U.S. It was released in Germany, but dubbed in German. I could go on and on, but as much as I would like everything on DVD or any physical media source is not going to happen. The old TV Show "Eight is Enough", the first season was released on DVD, but season 2-5 I had to order from WB and those were sold by order and they are a burn. Otherwise I would never have had it. In reality, since I can record from any source, I do have everything available I want on DVD. So I guess, I make it into physical media.

You would think Disney would put those great shows when we were growing up on their channel for the likes of us. I loved The Wonderful World Of Disney and the Jacques Cousteau series. I'd happily pay to see them again
      @@patrickmartin4996

    • @patrickmartin4996
      @patrickmartin4996 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes indeed. Some of the old Disney programs are available on You Tube, but the picture quality is not the best on many of them. When I picked up Disney+ for the 3 year deal of $140 (Ad free), when they first came on, we were promised that their whole library would be available in time, except for like "Song of the South". So far very very little has been released from the Disneyland & Wonderful World of Color eras. I dropped Disney+ after the 3 year period. It just is not worth it. If they would get the vault open, I would re-sub immediately. So far, nothing. Disney has always been very picky on what & when they release DVD's, so I would guess Disney+ would not be any different.

You are spot on. As for price, it is a bit more for me because, as a long-time collector, I already have a very large collection of DVD, Blu-ray, and even VHS. So, when I'm shopping for more, I'm usually looking for something specific. I still usually pay under or around $10 for a DVD or Blu-ray. I have paid much more, such as $85 for the Cleopatra 2525 series and $65 for Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy on DVD. I was more than happy to pay $145 for Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Chosen Collection box set... loads of exclusive extras in that set. One thing a lot of people aren't aware of is the advantages of audio and video quality. I read about this and tested it myself, and because of varying bit rates on streaming services, a physical Blu-ray has significantly better audio and video quality than a 4K movie streaming. The 4K only signifies pixels on screen, not bit rate. That, I had to see for myself, and it held true.

Streaming is basically renting forever, but without the choice of what you'd like to watch.
I'm much happier buying both new and old BluRays/4Ks, without risk of changes in the future like censorship or directorial fiddling (directors cuts) which aren't always for the better.
I've built a large collection of film and TV over the last 20 years. I'm in a position to never be bored. I have a running list of films I haven't watched recently and I'm going through that list.
My realisation was that I spent more time scrolling Amazon Prime or Netflix (the only two I have) than watching anything. Then putting something on, just because of scrolling fatigue. But the thing that's going to completely destroy streaming is the forced introduction of adverts. It's NOT acceptable for Amazon Prime to bill me, then change the terms of the service for the worse. I will NOT be watching any streaming service when adverts are required or it's too expensive to pay for ad free versions. No thanks.
Ultimately, there's 100 years of great films and TV available on physical media. I don't actually need new content if they don't offer it physically.

I agree with you. I love to have the physical media. The art covers for the disc are great. And you can watch it whenever you want. It is a different feeling popping in a disc to watch a movie compared to getting one streaming from Netflix.
Previously I would buy 2 copies of a movie when it comes out. One to watch right away with the family the other keep unopen as a collection. Used to go to Blockbuster and Hollywood videos and buy their bin DVDs. Got a lot of dvds and blu rays from garage sales and flea markets. Lots of times the movie is either so old or licensing issue that it is not available anywhere else.

You know, I stopped my Microsoft subscription and mow use Thunderbird for email, and Libreoffice... I've wasted £958 with microsoft for the last decade, wasted.. sick of subscription fees... If streaming is done smartly by cycling in and out of your subscription status, it is far cheaper than buying individual movies that are easily accessible without bargain bin hunting at a thrift shop, especially digital rentals. I typically only want to watch a movie once unless it is an all-time favorite. Also, vinyl is very unique, and I don't expect DVD will ever have that same comeback on such a massive scale. In the end for me, convenience will always make streaming the better option.

Another one is, with streaming services, if you're paying money each month for it, you feel obligated to watch it, otherwise you'd be wasting your money. You might go through a period where you're not watching much tv though, you're doing other things. So then you'd think you're kind of wasting money on it, and you may even force yourself to watch it so as to get your money's worth. With physical medai though, there's no such urgency. You feel more at ease to watch it whenever.

Based on your previous video, I started buying Blu Rays through ebay, and it's working well so far. Thank you. My reason for preferring that is different than the ones you listed. I don't watch many movies or TV shows (I prefer TH-cam and books), and when I sub to a service like Netflix, I end up spending more time watching junk than I want to. There is something about that all-you-can-eat buffet that keeps you eating. When I buy a the selected Blu Ray, I can feed that to myself a little at a time (an hour in the evening), rather than being exposed to a whole catalog of nonsense and feeling like I should watch something to get my money's worth, then end up feeling like "why am I wasting my time watching this crap?" Anyhow, thanks for the video, and I agree, that's the way to go.

Never did streaming except these short videos on YT. My DVDs, CDs and vinyl are here to stay. Many rare and obscure films are not available on streaming channels but only thru collectors and traders. One never know what will be pulled from their lists due to political correctness or alleged racism. It also gets old seeing these articles saying what people should get rid of and CDs and DVDs always seem to be on such lists.
It's nice having no streaming or cable bills or watching edited films or old TV programs. Physical media isn't going anywhere.
About 15 years ago I got rid of the cases and put my DVDs (& music CDs) into 5 x 5 sleeves and thus no problems with storage as that eliminated about 90% of the space needed.

I have a Rocky Collection on Blu Ray that showcases more of the dialogue and story development and less of the boxing, with longer uncut scenes. It makes the Rocky series so much better. I would have never seen these extras if I didn't own the physical media. Before getting this Rocky Collection, I didn't want to watch Rocky because the fight scenes were too long and kind of pointless in the end. During lockdown I got a blu ray player, then looked for people selling bulk sets so for a really small amount of money I ended up with so many. yep a couple of doubles but that did not matter as long as the total number of disc's I bought made it worth it.
when you said internet, you then miss of needing a high data allowance to stream everything, easy use over 350gb in a month
There is nothing wrong with streaming from sites like youtube, or other free sites were you can pick what to watch to mix something new in.
it is better to watch some thing you like at the time YOU want to watch it, TV does not let you do that. so why pay a TV licence to the BBC that prevents you from watching tv channels that use adverts to make there living.
Watch a complete series and just one click watch the next episode on the disc with out leaving the chair. No rushing home for that fav tv show that starts soon.

At least with physical media if you get banned from a shop that shop then can't barge into your home and take away all the CDs/DVDs/BDs that you ever bought from them unlike if you bought stuff off TH-cam. If you spent hundreds of pounds on movies from TH-cam and they ban you you lose all those purchases.

make Digital copies of your DVD's than upload them to your own cloud or store them on external hard drive, than you can stream them from the cloud or plug your external hard drive into your TV. This give you the benefits of owning the DVD but also the convenience of streaming. You are right though films or shows can just disappear from these streaming services. They are also getting more greedy with their subscription fees. I also find films look and sound better on Blu ray or even DVD on occasions. There's also more pleasure in choosing and playing a DVD/Blu ray.

I feel you on that sentiment about the algorithm… I bought a record or so of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who I didn't know about, until I bought her records and I found a person who was essential to the creation of Rock N Roll and beyond the popular artists that never get any recognition because they're NOT on the new mediums!! I have a record from 1944 of Red Foley on Decca Records singing "Smoke On The Water" and "There's A Blue Star Shining Bright(In A Window Tonight)"… but when I went to buy it on the Apple iTunes store I could get"Smoke On The Water" BUT I couldn't get the B side unless I had an account set to Ireland!! What the bloody heck!! 🤬🤬

@@JamesMurphyYT yeah I listened to an NPR piece about Sister Rosetta Tharpe and they said that she became more popular during the time Elvis Presley was popular in the UK(Sister Rosetta Tharpe was popular in the UK, not meaning Elvis) and was because when she was still in the US and tried to make a comeback, a lot of people in the US thought she was copying Elvis Presley's style when HE copied from her!! SMH… that's one reason why I don't like Elvis Presley… second reason why is because he didn't write ANY of his own songs!! He was more like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby etc!! So I have more respect for her and others like Hank Williams(Sr.), Jimmie Rodgers, Bob Marley, Little Richard and MANY more ARTISTS that wrote more than 0-1% of their own songs… and to get back to movies and TV… Desilu (Desi Arnez and Lucille Ball), George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and others in that field!! 😉😉

I'm from the US and I decided to go back to DVDs and start collecting them because what's the point and also some stuff is stuff I don't care about or something that's political that I don't care about seeing so that's why and another thing if there's a movie that i really like to watch and I look for it's either not there and gone somewhere else that involves money like a streaming service or gone away completely or change the stuff in it so my generation can zip it and it sucks and also I would rather have my own collection of stuff that I like instead of what everyone else likes that's the good thing about physical media

Recently though, he's been turning up asking if he can borrow TV box sets like SHAMELESS and LIFE ON MARS - apparently his streaming services only have the US edits, which have a good 10 minutes clipped away.

I used to collect vinyl / CDs / DVDs and video games.
Now my place is mostly empty and minimalist.
I find an external hard drive is enough for media purposes.
I used to think, what happens when I die? Somebody is going to inherit a skip full of possessions.

I have them spread over a cupboard in my living room, on the floor by the telly and in my garage.
At the moment, I'm making a concerted effort to condense them down, by doing away with the cases on single films and replacing them with wallets. A box that used to hold about 24 DVDs will now hold at least 75 if not more DVDs.
