    Out of all the reviews that I have watched and read (and I did many), this one has been the most thorough, understandable, knowledgeable and helpful.
    I particularly liked that you showed what's exactly in the box, demonstrated the M.2 connections, explained thoroughly how those PCIes work and did many close ups on the motherboard. The detailed timestamps are extremely helpful as well.
    Thanks for the help and good job!

    Thanks for the review - great job! I just bought one to compliment my 3900xt.
    Also - My main selling point here was NO chipset fan. Money was not really an object, here, so I was ready to spend some money on a motherboard. The only x570 MB available with no chipset fan was close to $1k, so I went with the B550.

    Thanks for calling out the manufacturers for not providing a Type C usb front header. I crossed several boards off my list for this reason. MSI appears to be the only manufacturer that includes the Type C header on all of their motherboards.

      Linus explained this in video yesterday... it seems ALL B550 boards have to choose for either: internal usb-c connector or usb 3.2 at the back... seems to be some sort of bottleneck in pci-x gen 3 in chipset and that's it... so you just have to choose which usb3.2 you want: at the front or at the back?

    • @lukehill5739
      @lukehill5739 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zubich That's not technically correct as there are USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps ports from both the chipset and the CPU. It is possible for a manufacturer to route the CPU-fed USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports to the back panel and the chipset-fed ports to the internal Type-C header. This is exactly what ASUS, for example, does with the B550-E Gaming that we also reviewed.

    I ended up with one of these motherboards through Newegg's GPU lottery - they bundled it with a 3060 TI, presumably because these mobos weren't selling. I'm guessing that is because it is in an odd spot in the market (most people who'd buy more expensive boards went with X570 instead of the B550).
    I couldn't sell the motherboard at a reasonable price, so I swapped it out, and replaced my old B450 board. I also upgraded my 3600 to a 5900x, and put it in a new case too.
    I really like the board, though the absence of a USB 'C' header is disappointing. I also ended up with a bunch of features I probably wouldn't normally have paid for, but am glad to have, and it will affect the type of motherboard I purchase next.
    Great review!

    With my understanding PCIe 4.0 x8 should be the same bandwidth and speed as PCIe 3.0 x16. Using a GPU like the RTX 2080 Ti (a PCIe 3.0 card) shouldn't make a difference at all. Even with a GPU that uses PCIe 4.0 it shouldn't really make that much of a difference until you go up to 4K gaming, at least for now anyways because PCIe 3.0 x16 still hasn't been fully saturated by GPUs.

    Just bought one of these for £100 used. The most power stages ever put onto a non-server boards - with a non-doubler 16-phase controller, no less - and it's B550.
    Whichever mental patient at Gigabyte dreamed this up, I thank you😁
    (Unless you are running a beast of a Gen 3 card, the drop to x8 will not be noticeable - I would take Gen 4 drives over those 2-3 fps every day of the week, and I went with this instead of an X570 because I wanted a silent chipset.)

    Assuming you install a NAVI/NAVI2 or Ampere based GPU the x8 slot wont matter because PCI-E gen 4 x8 is just as fast as PCI-e 3 x16. This will only be a disadvantage if you use an older top of the line NVIDIA GPU on the board instead of a newer NAVI based GPU or to be release AMPERE cards. Something like GTX 1070/1080 and up to an RTX 2080 super should work just fine.

    Just got this board for £106 from Amazon Warehouse deals. For a gaming build I disagree that the m.2/pci performance trade off is worth it. Just use one m.2 slot and then some sata ssd storage for the rest of your games. In fact if you really need a more than one or two m.2 drives then I think you really would be better off going X570. The m.2 design of this board is just a weird oddity imho. It's probably intentional to push certain users towards other solutions.

  • @theodorthiele
    @theodorthiele 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I picked it because it's the best AM4 motherboard without a chipset fan that isn't excessively expensive.
    I would have gone with X570 basically just to ensure having more expansion options in the future, but realistically I'm not likely to see the benefit as gen 4 NVMEs when it's just a gaming system. And the chipset fans are just a no-go for me, even if they are barely audible as some claim, they are another point of failure that you can't just fix easily.
    So this was the most badass board - I was a bit bummed about the lack of an internal USB gen 3.2 header, but I'm sticking it in a meshify C for the foreseeable future.
    I've also heard that the weird dual bios is kind of annoying, but with PBO being the better option for single core performance, I don't see myself overclocking enough for that dual bios to kick in.
    My main concern is actually the dropping down to x8 - I think I have enough storage with a single m.2 and my old SATA SSDs, but if I were to add more M.2s, I'd probably go for an expansion card in one of the full length slots going to the chipset - and have a single gen 4 in the top.

      Other B550 boards typically use B550 chipset lanes for their secondary M.2 slots. This limits them to Gen 3 speeds and therefore they do not affect the graphics card at all. Instead, Gigabyte has opted for many Gen 4 M.2 slots, unlike other B550 boards, but that forces the GPU to x8.

      I have found the chipset fans on a few X570 motherboards to be anything other than inaudible, even on their silent profiles. Some are very good though - particularly the MSI ones. I imagine it is indeed covered by warranty, but that doesn't help if you have to rip apart your system and go X number of weeks without a functioning motherboard. I really do think the lack of chipset fans on motherboards is a good positive for B550.

    You might want to try using the PCIe 4.0 lanes to see if it limits game performance. I am saying this as I have seen several tested configs PCIe 4.0 x8 didn't have FPS impact but if you can provide your data that would be a welcomed sight.

    • @lukehill5739
      @lukehill5739 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can't do that unfortunately as the RTX 2080 Ti is PCIe Gen 3. It is unlikely that 8 lanes will be a problem for the RX 5700/XT as they are Gen 4 and Gen x8 is roughly the same bandwidth as Gen 3 x16.

    A couple of things to note:
    They put the USB-C and the port above it on the PCH (so making the USB-C situation worse).
    That motherboard allows you to split the x16 4 ways (so x4,x4,x4,x4) to 2 x16 slots and the lower 2 M.2 slots. When you consider x4 Gen4 is equal to x8 Gen3 (that is a lot of bandwidth!). Plus there's top x4 Gen M.2, and the lower x16 slot (at x4 Gen3). If inclined you can have 4 Gen4 M.2, plus a Gen3 M.2 (also 4 SATA ports)). It's a strange board...
    How is the soundcard when you have a CPU & GPU being loaded up? I haven't seen a build-in soundcard yet that can drive a decent pair of headphones while gaming, the power rails are simply too noisy. I'm thinking about 'downgrade' from an Asus x570-P as the PCH fan is the loudest component by far (high-pitched too), the CPH 'cooler' is really just an insulator to heat up the PCH to 57c (where it turns on) in a few minutes. It's so dumb (directly under the GPU, and above the 0.6" stated in the ATX spec), yet Asus doesn't see the problem (loads of people asking about adding fan control, plus their software sucks, good luck installing it).

      Just save up and get the X570 Aorus Master. It is a much better featured all-rounder motherboard. This B550 Aorus Master board is only meant for pro-overclockers who has truck load of patience. This motherboard has dual BIOS but it doesn't have a single BIOS switch selector and you cannot manually select BIOS A or BIOS B to use. So lets say, you screw up with your overclocks, after 3 times retrying to POST but failed, the board will automatically switch to the next BIOS. All your saved BIOS profile will be gone because BIOS A and B cannot access each other's saved BIOS profile. Then you gotta force the motherboard to go to your preferred BIOS. This is really pain in the butt. So dont buy this motherboard. All Gigabyte boards with dual BIOS without a selector switch behave exactly like this

    So, if I install one m.2 nvme in the top slot and a 2080ti I will not bottleneck anything? But if I install more than one m.2 nvme, the graphics card will drop speed?

      The 2080TI doesn’t take advantage of pci-e 4.0.
