Gigabyte X570 AORUS ULTRA has a dirty secret!

I loved both the Elite and Pro series AORUS has released for the X570 chipset. Understandably I had a world of expectations when receiving the X570 AORUS ULTRA, its more expensive larger than life gaming monster.
But, the more I toyed with it, the more I realized that, AORUS, is not telling us everything.
The Gigabyte x570 AORUS Ultra is not who it says it is!
    Enjoy
    :)

For those looking at the clickbaity title: The Ultra's "dirty secret" is that it's 50 USD more for very minimal feature improvements, you're better off going with the Aorus Pro instead.

And for the early adopters, the better chipset fan on the Ultra was interesting. Turns out the fan doesn't need to run most the time, but 1 year ago, people didn't know that (and the BIOS at the time *did* run the fan much more and at higher RPM).

Thank you for the review! I happen to have the Ultra and now think I may have not thought it very well through, as Pro was still available when I was building up the system.
I think what happened here with Gigabyte is they may had some customers complaining (?) about the "I Pro" (ITX) and the "Pro" (without the I, being ATX which may have led to confusion?), which led them to want to rebrand the ATX Pro to Ultra. But as with every business case, they reconsidered a slight upgrade to fit a 3rd M.2 and pimped up the VRM radiator, audio shield/top along with the chipset radiator and raised the price to cover the expense. It's just my theory... Couldn't find anything to support that, except the fact that the Ultra was released later and it is easiery to buy the Ultra vs Pro in some retail stores. On top of that, I'm not quite sure, but based on Gigabyte's page, Pro doesn't support 2nd generation AMD Ryzen with Radeon Vega Graphics processors, but only 2nd generation AMD Ryzen without Vega Graphics..?

I ended up getting the Ultra just recently, but at quite a significant discount being a refurbished board. I paid about the price of a Pro (non wifi) with the the only thing I found wrong is a dent in the plastic near the audio, so a solid value for what I paid.
One thing I would like to point out, is that the Ultra PCB rev. 1.1/1.2 now also includes a thunderbolt header for an add-in card near the chipset. This is of no value to me, but I suppose someone might care. I would have liked to see more USB ports or code LED, and as such I might have gone with a Pro if not for the discount. I certainly would not have paid full price for the Ultra.
    Keep up the good work!

m2 and ssd dont give the long term garantee a platter mech drive gives and for real storage like 8-14tb it simply isnt posible from a price point to put big m2 pcie 4 in, untill that sday im very gratefull i can still us sata. even waiting for assd to be large is a few years away yet.
I understood why agp went away adn pci changed to pci e and i was even joyful when flopy disc was finally removed but i dont get why sata is even a issue at this time. Its simply affordable and as a storage option and a program perspective ssds are certainly not a bottle neck. love your review and your style even if i dont aghree with the remove sata thingy lol.

The prices right now are $420 CND for the Ultra and Strix and $390 for the Pro but I can just wait until there's a bundle or sale. I would like to put a 4.0 gen SSD in there but from what I can tell, that would require me to ditch the heatsink that comes with the 4.0 gen SSD's and or ditch one of the heatsinks that come with the board. Would a 4.0 gen SSD even fit in the 1st slot with it's own heatsink, right up next to the GPU? Thanks for your help.

-At least in your conclusion, you forgot to mention that the Ultra has ax WiFi while the Pro has ac. If you use WiFi and your router/AP supports it, that is a big deal. Especially after complaining about SATA ports, the extra m.2 port is certainly a plus and combined with a better VRM cooler and the WiFi 6, the Ultra is definitely worth it. I would even go so far and say that if you don't get the Elite (cheaper) or the Master (more expensive), get the Ultra.-
It looks like I was confusing things here and I definitely don't want to mislead people. I would probably still go with the Ultra even if it it only comes down to the third m.2 and the better VRM cooling, unless you don't use WiFi and you can get a good deal ($30-50 less than the WiFi version) for the Pro non-WiFi.

@@robertorgg137 The WiFi standard 802.11ax is also referred to as Wi-Fi 6 (because it runs on 6 GHz). You will only benefit from it if you plan to keep your hardware for a while or if you actively plan to equip your place with it. Most standard hardware (routers provided by ISPs) probably won't support it for a while.
If you care about noise, from what I read, Asus does not provide a BIOS setting to have the chipset fan passive (up to a certain temperature). That's what made me go with Gigabyte (X570 Aorus Master). I would base if you should go with the Elite or the Pro on the CPU that you are planning to stick in it. If you only get a 65W TDP CPU, you don't need to go crazy on the VRM. By the way, there should be both WiFi and non-WiFi versions of both boards.

Those 3 drives all being M.2 drives, make for a fast, consistent, smooth, well organized, and managed workflow setup..... That's to say, if the files are properly placed to the correct drives..... While 3 drive configurations, can be setup with regular SSD's, or even HDD.... Having 3 M.2 drives is quite appealing for Video Editors.....who seek a quick workflow..... Thanks for the videos....

6:58 Are you sure the 3rd PCIe slot x16 shares bandwith with the two first? When I read Gigabyte's spec, what I understand is that the two first are integrated in the CPU sharing an x16 lane (though the 2nd one maxes out at x8) and therefore share bandwith. But as the 3rd one (maxing out at x4) is integrated in the chipset, it shouldn't affect the performance of the 2 first slots when used. I'm quite new at this, so I'm not sure if what I'm saying makes any sense...

So I'm looking at the Aorus website and comparing the pro wifi to the ultra side by side. And your review seems off at least from their advertising materials on the Aorus website. But your info seems consistent with the advertising materials on amazon. So I'm not quite sure what to go off of.
    According to Aorus website:
Ultra supports 4 DIMMS of RAM, while Pro only supports 2 DIMMS.
Ultra has 12+2 phase power, while Pro only has 8 phase.
1 more NVME M.2 connector on ultra vs pro as you mentioned.
The pictures of the backplates on the aorus website are clearly different.
Ultra having 4 USB 2.0 slots vs Pro with 0.
Ultra having 3 USB 3 Gen 1 vs Pro with 2
Ultra having 3 USB 3 Gen 2 vs Pro with 2
    Different number of audio connectors.
Now the advertising materials on Amazon are completely different, with your review being consistent with the amazon specs, minus the fact that ultra supports 2.5 gig lan instead of 1 gig lan.
I'm sort of scared to buy one of these boards, but I have no idea which version I'm going to get due to 2 completely different features specs on advertising.

Le VRM est rigoureusement identique ainsi que l epaissuer du PCB.

La seule différence et l ajout d un 3ème M2ssd est une radiateur à lame sur le VRM latéral qui n en avait pas besoin.
