    Rambo: First Blood Movie Description:
Vietnam veteran and drifter John J. Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) wanders into a small Washington town in search of an old friend, but is met with intolerance and brutality by the local sheriff, Will Teasle (Brian Dennehy). When Teasle and his deputies restrain and shave Rambo, he flashes back to his time as a prisoner of war and unleashes his fury on the officers. He narrowly escapes the manhunt, but it will take his former commander (Richard Crenna) to save the hunters from the hunted.
First Blood (also known as Rambo: First Blood) is a 1982 American action film directed by Ted Kotcheff, and co-written by Sylvester Stallone, who also stars as Vietnam War veteran John Rambo. It co-stars Richard Crenna as Rambo's mentor Sam Trautman and Brian Dennehy as Sheriff Will Teasle, and is the first installment in the Rambo franchise, followed by Rambo: First Blood Part II.
The film is based on the 1972 novel of the same name by David Morrell, which many directors and studios had unsuccessfully attempted to adapt in the 1970s. In the film, Rambo, a troubled and misunderstood Vietnam veteran, must rely on his combat and survival skills when a series of brutal events results in him having to survive a massive manhunt by police and government troops near the small town of Hope, Washington.
First Blood was released in the United States on October 22, 1982. Despite initial mixed reviews, the film was a box office success, grossing $156 million at the box office. In 1985, it also became the first Hollywood blockbuster to be released in China, holding the record for the largest number of tickets sold for an American film until 2018. Since its release, First Blood has been reappraised by critics, with many highlighting the roles of Stallone, Dennehy, and Crenna, and recognizing it as an influential film in the action genre.
The film's success spawned a franchise, consisting of four sequels (all of which were co-written by and starred Stallone), an animated television series and a series of comic books, novels, video games, as well as a Bollywood remake.

  • @neomanrex

So some historical context Mel. If you see this. After Vietnam the USA was not enveloped in the "thank the troops" movement like today. In fact most of the troops from vietnam were treated like crap and forgotten about. Called baby killers etc. And generally considered to be a drain on society when they returned from war a lot of them dealing with PTSD and not being able to adjust to regular life so turning to vagrancy, homelessness, and drugs.
This kind of stuff happened. It wasn't until the 90's that the military regained its mythic status as "defenders of freedom" Since no one who served in Vietnam defended many freedoms at all. In fact the whole "Thank the troops" movement is born out of this countries collective guilt over how they did treat a lot of returning Vets from Vietnam. In fact I'd say films like Rambo were important in showing that the people we put in these life or death situations come back kind of broken.
So just remember that. The way we treat the troops today is not how we always treated the troops. American history is not a straight line. A lot of ups and downs.
This does however do a good job showing police corruption and brutality. And how it doesn't always fall on racist lines it is in fact a lot of time small men with big egos and too much power waving their dicks around.

I'm pretty sure that the whole "Vietnam soldier being called baby killers" thing has been debunked as being either overblown or a straight up myth created to demonize the anti-war movement. People were pissed at the American government over the war, not individual soldiers. But, yeah they were, like most veterans, most definitely fucked over by the government who didn't offer them support for the mental and physical trauma they suffered.
Wouldn't say American soldiers have been defending much freedom since then either though. They're still killing plenty of civilians in a failing war. It's the same old shit.

8:19 If I remember correctly, I've read where Stallone hurt himself pretty bad when he hit that branch for real. It was at least one rib that he broke when he hit it. If you have ever seen the Expendables movies that he made, he got hurt quite often there and had to keep filming and couldn't get his injuries surgically corrected until after filming, which was sometimes months. I remember when the wrestler Stone Cold Steven Austin was told to run and push/punch/launch Stallone backwards with an enormous hit. Stallone blew backwards, slammed his neck/upper back against the ground behind him and got up and went straight to the doc/ER. They told him he needed to have that surgically repaired and it would take a long time to heal and the stars in that movie were all pretty big and Stallone couldn't afford to have everyone break apart for a month or two while he healed from surgery. So he waited until after filming to get it fixed and remained in pain. He has put himself through a lot for his movies.

So when Vietnam vets came back the general public didn't like them.

To be fair, just cause of the way Rambo was dressed, did not mean he would automatically be identified as a soldier. A number of Hippies in the 60s and 70s (which is where the book was more closely based) dressed in army gear like a bunch of idiots in protest to the war. As an former soldier in the army myself, I find it quite disgusting to disrespect what the uniform means this way from them.

The parts that you describe as unrealistic, e.g. the police relentlessly picking on him, make perfect sense if you see the movie not as a commentary on American society after the Vietnam War (although it is also that), but as a movie about the war itself, with underdog Rambo as a stand-in for the people of Vietnam. Their experience, and guerrilla resistance tactics, overlap perfectly with Rambo's -- just as the police and military in the movie reflect the hubris, ignorance, and heavy-handedness of the American army in Asia. Even if (especially if) the viewer broadly agrees with American military activities in Vietnam, this interpretation brings a powerful perspective to the conflict, regardless of whether or not the filmmakers themselves realized how deeply their movie would represent these themes.
This interpretive layer is often missed in modern reactions to the movie, but I think it elevates the Rambo story in a way that many other movies of its type (the Rambo sequels, The Deer Hunter, etc) simply can't match. Apocalypse Now has that extra layer, though, and it's a great movie for exactly that reason.

First scene, Rambo has hiked miles to visit what might be his last surviving friend, only to find out that friend is already dead.
Next scene, he's harassed and abused by an aggressive police chief on a power trip.
Combined with his background filled with torture, war, watching his friends die violently, and returning home only to be spat on and sneered at... it's amazing how resilient some people can be.

There's a fantastic bit in the book that describes how the chief gets away after the first clash with rambo because he's just sprinting away while Rambo was running and taking cover every now and then in case of return fire. The author compares it to an amateur chess player vs a veteran the amateur makes a random move and the veteran thinks its a particular gambit so he moves appropriately to counter only to have the amateur move a different piece throwing him off balance.I can confirm the chess idea as that's what happened to me in highschool student were playing chess in a free period so I joined a game and ending up beating the head of the chess club until he realized what was happening.

    • @davidsavage5630
      @davidsavage5630 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The baby killer thing is from Vietnam veterans having to sometimes shoot children because the Viet Cong would sometimes strap explosives to toddlers and send them running to the soldiers. They didn't know which kids were strapped and which weren't. It's messed up but I don't think people have the right to judge others based on what they had to do to survive. It was the Cong that killed those kids when they booby trapped them. They were already dead when the vets had to shoot them. It's beyond awful..

In a way, this is one of the best movies in its genre. It's beyond powerful yet, it is expressed in a non complicated way which makes it resonate with everyone who has their heart in the right place. I think it's Stallone's strongest part ever. Also i think because of the reality of ptsd, the movie is as strong as Oliver Stone's Platoon is. Only the battle takes place back home as the war in veterans minds was still raging on.

My dad was a GB I watched this movie so much....Arnold is cool but Sly hands down. Watch over the top! This is the best and most accurate portrayal of what a SF guy is. Dad was 10th mountain group out of Ft Devans Massachusetts. The rest of the Rambos were fun but this is as close as it comes to being real. I say that not from personal accords but being around a real SF man.....Wasn't no bs and would rather no one ever know who they are!
