As a 37 yr career Firefighter in So. California, here is the dirty little secret that municipalities don't want you to know.... a fire dept saves $$ by running understaffed. It is way cheaper to pay OT, than to hire new employees and pay the roll ups in benefits. This falls squarely on city leaders and politicians for not adequately funding the FD. Sadly, their priorities lay elsewhere and not with public safety. It will NEVER change until responsible leadership is put in place and sadly the public keeps voting in the same inept/incompetent leaders every 4 yrs.

In my government they call it "Salary Savings!" It was first instituted by former governor Pete Wilson.

Yep and when those council members when there home is on fire they want firefighters already there. But they reap what they sew.

Our L.A. fire departments don't need an overhaul. Our leadership needs an overhaul.

One idea is to increase the number of city council districts 3 fold from 15 to 45 so that we're on par with big cities like Chicago and New York City.

The problem is EMS calls that need not go to a hospital.

  • @0524cami

They cut staff but increased overtime....does that make any fucking sense. When they got rid of all the personnel in 2007. They also got rid of engine companies. So many FD's staff 4 to an engine and 5 to a tiller. While LA only has 4 in the tiller. Wtf LA!

First and foremost every EMS call does NOT need a paramedic and a full size fire apparatus. Making that change first would help significantly reduce volume and leave suppression apparatus available a greater portion of the time. Secondly, remove paramedics from transport units. Third, address wall time issues with hospitals, if the hospital administration isn’t getting a call at the 30 min mark they should be. Pressure the state to reform scope of practice, EMTs and Paramedics in South Carolina have more progressive scope of practice and protocols.

The answer to this situation is to add another shift to the Department Apparatus Maintenance shops and better funding for parts too. Plus, why not shorten front line apparatus life to 8 years?

Also, the average wage for a firefighter paramedic on an ambulance with the Los Angeles fire department averages around $50 an hour times 24 hours
You can do the math it’s over $1000 a day !!!
Mind you there are two members on each ambulance !
And there are 97 paramedic rescue ambulances every day throughout the city of Los Angeles

Not everyone can be a fireman. This job requires brains, guts and stamina. The Civil Service test is easy. That is how you are judged.

Not true. I spent 32 years in a fire dept. in CA (not LA City). I was an average, white kid (18 going on 19), no relatives in the FD, wasn’t an athlete, etc. Just focused in what I needed to do and did it. Back when I was hired literally of thousands of people were applying for FD jobs for every test, so there is no truth to the statement that people were told not to try so they didn’t. Tons of false narratives out there.

It’s wonderful how the firefighters Union President volunteers the taxpayers of the city a substantial tax hike for new toys and personal to run EMS calls. How come he did not offer up an explanation on the type of service calls that jumped from 500 a day to a couple thousand a day? Maybe it’s because they were not all fire calls but the vast majority were EMS calls. Let’s contract our paramedic services out to the private sector just like the rest of the country does, we would need a lot less highly expensive firefighters to eat up our budget. I’m curious how much an LA City paramedic makes in salary with medical benefits, days off, vacations, retirement and much more to what an AMR paramedic makes in salary and benefits.

@@josephwootenVGK lol I worked in EMS for 7 years. You can drink beer it’s not a problem. Some companies may ask questions to see if you’re a drunk but in general if you have alcohol in your system it’s not a big deal. If you have weed in your system it is a big deal and some ems companies still do hair testing to see if you had thc within the past 6 months. Weed is wayyyyyy safer than beer. There’s definitely is a bias that’s needs to be resolve weed should be federally legal for all.

      That sounds good!
Until you leave an emergency unchecked, and it gets worse and expands, until it's affecting everyone else.
You don't turn your back on a trash can fire, and then bitch 4 hours later when a whole city block is burning to ground.
The trick here, is to tackle the emergency BEFORE it gets out of hand... that's what saves lives and property.
