You give rabbit poop to the chicken??
@ivonne t yes especially in the summer when it's full of fly larva. It's just like having them follow a herd of cows a few days
great looking rabbit hutch. if I may, I'd like to give you some friendly advice.. always put your wire on the inside because the rabbits will chew that wood and eventually get out. putting the wire on the inside stops them from being able to chew the wood. on your partitions, put the wire on both sides. rabbits do extremely well in cold temps.. they're built for it.. it's the hot weather you need to worry about. I know this is a year old now.. and by now I'm sure you've learned all the "tricks of the trade"...
Thanks. Yes, we have learned. They dont chew on the wood as much anymore now since we give them pine cones once or twice a week.
I know how to read a tape measure, but every now and again, I will say 3' and 3 lines.🤣🤣😆😆
🤣🤪
I love how your rabbit hutch came out thank you for sharing. I look forward to building this for my family. God bless you, brother.

For not having plans, that rabbit house came out awesome. As a 1st generation design , looks like you already have improvements for gen 2, that is great.
Thank you for the kind words. I'm going to carry some of the improvements to the grow out hutch. Do you raise rabbits?

For roofing you can use the plywood which you then paint with roof paint. It will last 10 years.
@@MatoJelic yes you can. Or just use the pvc mateiral and do not paint it and still last for years
Just want to point out one safety thing, you have your fingers in the wrong place when using that nail gun. It only takes one knot or defective nail to send one of those into your fingers.
Thanks for the feedback
Cut a soup can open at both ends and stuff it with Hay . Keeps all the Hay together until they Munch it up . Let it hang out both sides. Keeps it from falling through the cage floor .
Great tip, thanks!!
Great review and history of the rabbit hutch build, Brother Sid. That came out great for not having plans in hand.
Appreciate it, Big Rob. I think if I did have a set of plans it probably would have gone a little smoother. Hopefully, the grow-out hutch for the rabbits will go smoother.
Awesome video, I love the idea of the concrete trays. You did a good job of planning everything out. I also love the "what I would have done different " part.
Thank you! Hindsight is definitely something we want to pay forward for anyone else to get a leg up. We' did our homework and still learn from educated mistakes 😅.....
Are you planning a build?
Very nice, Mr Nakid Gardeners! You are quite talented with building things. How many bunnies do you have now? (not including the ones in the 🥶 freezer~~~). I'm pretty sure I could have a rabbit 🐇 or two, but my dogs would not love me. Your bunnies live in a posh penthouse! Did you follow a kit or make the bunny house from your imagination? I like it!
Right now, we have five rabbits. Two bucks and three does. We just bred them a few weeks ago again since the Arctic Blast kind of frozen the last set of baby rabbits.
@@TheNakidGardeners I'm thinking you'll have so many baby bunnies by Spring!

I built my hay feeders out of of scraps of the wire i used for the bottom of my tractors, which is 2'x'4' rectangles. I rolled it in a cylender shape, and its a pretty good size
That's a great idea!
Sydney, you and Jr did a fantastic job on this! For the record, listen to Tori next time😂. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, GG. Yea, I was trying to be frugal and not spend a lot of money and waste materials on this.
Awesome design and cool idea. We have coyote around and need to only ad a extra electric fence our GSD keeps most of them away but the fence keeps him away from them even though he knows they are part of his pack! Seriously but lol you never know. Thanks for the good idea. Like your quick cleaning dropping collectors. And touches like pocket holes. PS.good for you for not editing mishaps so we all can benefit and not make it ourself. Awesome job!
Thank you. We try to be as transparent as possible since we are very new to this lifestyle
I'm going to have to remember that screwdriver trick. That was clever. Having a powered stapler sure is nice too, isn't it! I know I wouldn't give mine up. Overall I'm pretty darn impressed. I like the mortar tubs under there to collect the manure, that's a nice trick, and fairly affordable. The challenge with rabbits, that I hear from everybody, is that they chew up everything. So anything in the cage is going to need to be periodically replaced. I researched them a couple years ago, about 4?, and then we ending up moving temporarily into a place where we couldn't keep *any* livestock. Blegh.
But if we get out onto our desert property around the end of this year, we might add rabbits next year. They are a fairly high meat output for effort put in, easy to clean as I recall, and then there's always the pelts for personal use as a bonus. And manure for the garden! I don't see us being able to raise meat chickens on the ten acres for... possibly quite a few years. There's a lot of work needs doing to have any amount of pasture out there, and my focus is on getting a dairy animal sooner rather than later. We regularly go through a gallon of milk a day, and our intake is only increasing as our kids get old enough to consume more. So that sounds like goats are in our future.
Yea, we tried the manual stapler and still have it, but the automatic stapler is by far a game changer on the homestead.
The screwdriver or flathead was beneficial when trying to make sure the hardware cloth was taunt and stayed taunt throughout the process.
These are TAMUKs rabbits and bred for the Texas heat. Hopefully, within 30 days, we can have three litters of rabbits.
Great job 👍🏽. I watched the dog attack video, you do what you have to do, protect your investment.❤
Thanks for understanding 🙏
Great job! Have y'all butchered your first round yet?
No, we haven't. We have been to a rabbit butchering class, though. We are going to try and attend two before our girls have their babies and time to harvest them as well. Are yall thinking about raising rabbits too?
@@TheNakidGardeners yes, we have someone coming over soon to teach us how to butcher and bring us some does... right now we just have 1 buck
I love your build! Great work, just watch your hand with that nailer. Those nails bend very easily even in pine (around knots), took a 15 gauge nail through my finger that was positioned at a 90 degree angle to the nail, it hit a knot, turned and came out of the wood. Talk about a surprise, that woke me up for the day!
Ouch! Will do. Thanks for the heads up
Nice design!! Great craftsmanship!! You must be from Houston 😂😂.We have to spend as much time with our boys as possible. This was great to watch. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy your evening
So glad you enjoyed it. I love the African tour videos.
For the chewing problem you can apply Tabasco diluted in a little water rub it on. It will stop the chewing for a little while
Oh I wouldn't waste sauce on that. I think what I would wind up doing is just covering it with some aluminum angle
chewing is not a problem.. you want them to chew. Prepare and plan for the chewing... its free dental work.
Just nail down some metal flashing over the bottoms of your dividers will prevent then chewing on the wood. I had to do it because some of my dividers were made from pressure treated lumber.
Yea I was thinking of doing something like that.
This is AMAZING!!! Im totally going to use this for my polish and silver fox! How much would you say this cost you to make? They are currently living inside but Im deciding to move them outside. Also if you still hevent found a hay holder kw cages has some good ones for 8 dollars a piece
Thank you so much for the feedback. I wish I had kept track of the cost back then. I would say this setup was about $700 with the roofing and cement totes. KW cages have a website or is it a brick and mortar place?
@@TheNakidGardeners its a website
@@skyedapoodle thanks. Will check on that
This was extremely helpful thank you so much!
Glad it helped you out
Hutches are awesome!!
Heavy crocks are way better than water bottles! The bunnies can drink more water from a crock compared to tons of licking from a bottle trying to get enough water.
@TexasBunnee we tried some crock like pots they will either poop in it or still flip it over. We do switch it over during the winter time so they can lick on the ice until we change it out
You built a mansion for those rabbits. Great job!
Haha, thanks. The grow out pen is going to be a revision of that
Nice job exactly how I would build . Functional strong fair for the rabbit and safe. Good work

Getting ready to build a new hutch. Really like your set up . looks awesome.
Enjoyed your video.
Thank you! What are you using your rabbits for?
Hello xoxo
Hey there Ms Lady
Great video. Good production value. Easy to watch. Not to long for the subject matter. Great tips and information. I think anyone could use this as the basis for there own idea. Good self recriminations at the end as well.
Thanks for the feedback. Do you raise rabbits?
This is awesome! Thank you! What kind of hardware cloth did you is? Sorry if that’s a dumb question. New to all this. I see there is different gauge sizes and galvanized or not.
No question is a dumb question. The floor hardware cloth is 1/2 x 1. This hardware cloth is hard to find at the big box stores near me. I don't trust ordering it online. So when I see the box store has them I try to get it when I can, regardless if I need it or not at the moment. The rest of the hardware cloth is 1/2 x 1/2. I believe both are either 14 ga or 19 ga. I do not recall. I wanted coated hardware cloth but was only able to find the pvc coated and was limited on that so I used the galvanized on the exterior walls and the pvc coated around the feeders and waters.
Hope that answered your questions. What type of rabbits are your going to be raising?
@@TheNakidGardeners thank you so much this is very helpful. We have rex/ New Zealand mix they are currently in a chicken coop we transitioned into a rabbit cage. I want to get them off the ground and into something easier for us to clean.
@simplymisti932 anytime. Im about to build a grow out pen simce sometimes our fields get saturated from the heavy rain we get dueing the fall and winter. Plus, when we dont have any litter in there, it can act as a breeding pen. Good luck. Let me know how it works out.
@@TheNakidGardeners that’s awesome! Are you going to record a video? You definitely have a new subscriber here 🙏🏻 I will definitely update you on how it goes 😀
@simplymisti932 I want to. It is so time-consuming on recording DIY projects 😆
Glad I found this video I want to build some rabbit hutches. One thing I am going to do different is just let the poop fall to the ground, will attract composting worms and over the year the worms would add some castings from eating on the poop making it a even better fertilizer than it already is.
Oh we collect our poop to feed the fly larva to the chickens. Now that summer heat is here the flies are too
@@TheNakidGardeners that works.
Thank you so much for this video! I'm in a similar situation and have to build one ASAP because my doe is about to have babies. I really don't need them multiplying like rabbits!
@lessalonelouann oh no! Lol, good luck.
Awesome looking! What the internal dims of those bunny bays? I am trying to work out what size to make mine but 30”sq is what I keep seeing, these looks smaller but who knows! Space is very valuable here 😂
Thsnks. The internal size i believe is about 25x30x30. However, you can make them 30x30x30
Great video. I love that you left in the mistakes. Cuz we all mess it up. Great ideas.
Didn't want people who built something like this run into the same mistake.
Just found this channel i love it. It turned out great! Appreciate the tips, as we're in the planning process of building our hutch. Can you share what type of latches are on the doors?
Sure thing! It is a gate latch I got from the orange box store
@@TheNakidGardeners Thanks so much!
Really like the manure catch system -
What did you say those are ? Something for cement?
Look at Home Depot/Lowes in the concrete area. XL concrete mixer
Thanks for the video! Have you had any issues with your rabbits chewing up the wood? ope, never mind, you got to it lol. mb
Haha yea they chew on it every now and then, but the pine cones and branches help
Where you mentioned that the rabbits were chewing on the wood frame of the cage dividers, you could put a layer of hardware cloth on both sides of the wood frame to prevent the chewing, and also to give some buffer space between rabbits that are housed beside each other so that they don't try to scratch at or bite at each other through the mesh if they don't get along, which sometimes can happen.
Yes we have had other comments about this. We don't have that issues much now. We give them pine cones and pine/pear branches to chew on to prevent them from chewing on the wood. It has decreased them chewing a lot.
The hutch is awesome.
Thank you. A few viewers were asking about this hutch. I'm glad I was able to share with our viewers.
Nice job, I like that build, it was a simple design. Can you put a piece of metal aluminum angle iron on the divider bottom to keep em from chewing the wood.
Yes! We are considering that. Thank you for coming through 😊
Awesome build. I have the wire cages and have been thinking about changing them out (for various reasons). I learned a couple of tricks from your build out that I will definitely use when I change mine out. Great commentary too.
Glad I could help. What breed of rabbits are you raising? How long have you been raising meat rabbits?
OMG THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!! Please come build me one!!!❤❤❤❤
Hahaha I have to build another one for our girl when they have their kits. Video on that to come
Hey! Do you have a list of everything you used or names & quantities of what u remember. We love this hutch.
I do not. Sorry. I wish I did. Everyone keeps asking me about it. Lol.
I enjoyed the build out. This is exactly what I asked my husband to do at the end of the month
I believe if I had had plans, I could have built this in a weekend. Yall raise rabbits?
We have about 90 Flemish giants my grandfather is one of the top breeders/showers in the country and I’ve been looking how to improve our current hutches and these are great! Many thanks for the video
Oh wow! 90! That's amazing. How often do you breed them?
@@TheNakidGardeners 3 maybe 4 times a year, they can be bread up to 6 times but we rarely do it unless they produce super nice kits. But yeah it’s ALOT lol we go through a 50lb bag of feed every other day.
@@LikelyLagging I can only imagine. We go thru 50lbs of feed every three to four weeks

Thanks, Ms. Lady. I'm glad you enjoyed
You might not want to put your foot or hand near where you are nailing with a nailgun. Speaking from experience, if the nail hits a knot, even one that you can't see, you could get a nail in your foot or hand.
I understand. I try to get pine without the knots. But I will be more careful. Thanks
where the rabbits are chewing at wood between cages, could you put some aluminum trim over the wood? That is a really nice rabbit condo
Sometimes, they do chew on it. It's only pine. We try to give them much chew branches and pine cones as possible to keep their teeth low and overgrown
@@TheNakidGardeners I love it. Is one of the nicest ones I have seen. Have you considered changing out the black bins, and putting wheelbarrows with composting worms under pens? Then, you can wheel it all to your big compost bin, and add your kitchen scraps
Reasons for not using wood for a hutch .... fine for temporary.
Had it for two years and problems are very minimum.
...for us.
Love the shirt
Thank you
Question did I hear right you give the rabbit poop to your chickens ? Why?
During the summertime, the poop gets maggots, which feeds the chickens.
I would put hardware
Cloth on both sides of the wall dividers to stop the chewing
After lolki.g back at it, I'm glad we didn't. The poop would be trapped between the hardware cloth wall, lol.
I love the video! Thanks for sharing. I saw in many other videos about sore hocks on hardware cloth though. Did you have any issues with that after using the 1/2 inch by 1 inch cloth?
We had one new buck that had an issue with sore hocks, but we forgot to add a resting box and pads for him. Other than that, he healed up fine once we put those in. No others had an issue
@@TheNakidGardeners that is awesome man, thank you very much for the info. I think i am going to build something very similar!! 🙂
Put Drywall corner bead on the corners the rabbits are chewing on. We use it in horse stall when we have a chewer.
So far, it hasnt been as bad. We give them pine cones every day to decrease them chewing
Glad to see you using a real stapler to attach the wire. I have seen some people use a stapler that was meant for paper
Hahaha really? That is crazy.
Amazing job! Now I’m going to have to build one!
Thank you! Glad this was helpful
Do you have a list of materials. Do you have measurements?
Sorry I don't. I made this quick, fast, and in a hurry to prevent the dogs coming back and them trying to bred each other too early. Each of the pens are about 26"W x 30"Dx30"H if that helps
Wait 12:52 you give rabbit poop to your chickens?
Yes. They absolutely love all the bug the poop attracts, and as a bonus, they scratch that fertilizer into our fields, and it helps to improve our soil. It's a beautiful symbionic relationship. 😁
You know what frustrates me? The price of the poop collecting trays! 😳 I purchased a couple of 4ft x 4ft cages without a base, so I'm creating a wire bottom base to keep my 2 rabbits feet healthy and dry. Each rabbit has their own cage. So I've been searching for either 4ft x 4ft or 4ft x 2ft trays for this purpose, and the prices are outrageous! Only horticulture (plant) trays seem to come in these dimensions, and they want over $100 for just one 2ft x 4ft tray! I mean, come on now! It's only molded plastic from China, not gold! 🙄 If anyone knows where to get these cheaper please comment. I'm new to your channel and I'm loving your content so blessings to you and yours! PS: Still waiting to see some nakidness..lol! 😜
Blahahaha I think that's why I framed these cages to fit the cement trays that cost around $17/each
Only naked underneath our clothes. We do have naked necks chicken though
What size staples did you use have the been effective enough?
I believe they were an inch or longer.
Theyneed to chew. Get creative..tree limbs?
Yea, this is an old video. We give them plenty of chew things
They gone eat all them 2x4 up
Welp, so fat they haven't. 🤷🏾♂️
1:39 Just curious, is there a reason for cutting 2 boards together like this? I see the blade doesn't fully cut through the 2nd. Would the 2nd then become the next top board?
Yes. Im not even sure why I did it that way to be honest. It was so lomg ago. Maybe the chop saw was inop
Ah alright. Thanks for reply! I didn't know if it was a safety thing or something you learned from experience I don't have 👍
Where did you guys get the poop bins? And what size are they
These you can get at any big box stores. I believe these are the large. You can get the small or medium size if need be.
Where are the measurements
Not very helpful without them
Well, i designed this without plans. Each rabbit pen is about 26"Wx30"Dx30"H
Can you put a supply list up? How many 2x4's did you use?
I wish I could. I always start with about 12-14 2x4 with a project.
Can i get measurements and price on this project
I wish I had them. I made everything without plans. Making sure I had each bin 30x30x36. Sorry

I am not sure what you are asking.
This is a fantastic hutch! We just recently got bunnies for our homestead too and I'm currently building a hutch. We have 3 bucks and 1 doe...do you suggest keeping the bunnies all separated? Or is it ok for the 3 bucks to be together, and the doe separated?
That is awesome! Well we heard that it is best to keep the bucks and does separated if you are doing the cage method. But you might would need a separate cage area to bring the doe in with the buck.
May I ask why you went with three bucks and one doe and not have at least two does?
@@TheNakidGardeners Thank you so much! We plan on getting another doe (or 2), we had just gotten what the farmer had available to get started. I gotta keep that poor girl separated from them 3 bucks until I get a couple more females available. :)

Thank you so much. What breed of rabbits do you raise?
When I was a kid my dad built a rabbit hutch for my 3 4H rabbits. He added an alfalfa "bin" for them. Where your dividers are is where he (my dad) made the divider into a V shape with bigger wire so they could pull the alfalfa through but the rabbits couldn't get through. Hope that helps.
Cool idea. Do you still raise rabbits?
@TheNakidGardeners as of last wknd I'm back into raising them.
@@juiced-fightclub-hamster that is awesome! what breed are you raising?
@@TheNakidGardeners these are a New Zealand/Flemish mix. I got them from my daughter.
I like Salatin’s idea of keeping chickens under the rabbits and wood shavings/sawdust. Nothing smells bad. The rabbit poop gets mixed up in the shavings by the chickens scratching it out. Collect your high quality compost off the floor twice a year! No cleaning!
Yea he has a great system in place. But for a small farm it isn't feasible for us. We keep our rabbits in a shaded area and rotational graze our chickens weekly. So far we have not had a bad smell. The Top Gun crew comes by and eat some of the rabbit food they drop and their poop. Besides the mud (due to rainy season) we don't get much smell.
Great video, definitely following
Going to be doing more farming and homesteading content on my other channel since we notice our gardener viewers don't tend to like this type of stuff
Hey!! Where did yall buy the pans from?? We're building ours now and need some poo poo pans too 😅
These are concrete mixer pans and we drilled some holes in them to make sure the urine flows out of them.
Man, I really like how your build turned out. I'm so picky about the things I build looking nice when I'm done, and yours really came out so nice and sleek, and you paid so much attention to detail. I love it! Thank you so much for sharing!
@howdychick30 oh trust me, this could have been better. I was rushing. I was trying to get this done in one day but took a weekend because I kept running back and forth to the big box store. But thank you for the kind words.
Is there a list of items like screws/latches used?
Like I said, I did not have plans on this, I just made it up as I built. Sorry
This is beautiful and brilliant. I'm going to have to show my husband, we need to do some re-arranging of our rabbits.
That's great! What type of rabbits do you raise, and how long have you been raising them?
@@TheNakidGardeners We are starting our second year with the rabbits. They are supposed to be Chinchilla, but there's got to be another breed in them because some of the first two litters have patches of white and blue eyes.
🤔 To keep the rabbits from chewing the frame put hardware cloth on both sides of the frame.
A nice treat for the rabbits that will help with. The. Chewing are the alfalfa cubes for cattle.
As for the dogs. Just get yourself at couple Mary breed guardians like Rottweiler or a livestock guardian type.
We would like to do hardware cloth on both sides, however, the way they poop it would get stuck between and hard to clean out plus extra maintenance. We do give them treats like pine cones, bark for trees they can chew on. We don't give them alfalfa unless the does are nursing and for the grow outs. Other than that we give them Timothy hay cubes. We are beefing up and redoing our perimeter fencing to prevent land predators from coming on our property.
thanks for the feedback
What type of rabbits do you have?
Tamuk.....you?
I was just going to ask about how the slant of the roof makes rain water drip toward your metal building and the back of the rabbit cage. I would put a gutter that would feed a 5 gallon bucket attached to water feeder inline pipe.
I forgot which channel I saw that. I just remember the guy was (looked like) an ex-navy, big dude.
My husband wants to grow rabbits too and I'm usually 'butting in' with building the house - like we did with chickens: his idea, I built. Thank you for sharing your plan and mistakes so we can avoid them.
Yes, eventually, we will have a water system like that. I have a friend who does it but has an issue with the water being hot and has to clean it due to algae. One thing about homesteading is that there is always work to be done even when you think you're finished.
Looks great. Not criticizing, I just got a chuckle out of "after everything was put together I standed up the structure"
Lol appreciate it kinfolk
Is there anyway you can link me the flooring one you used.
There isn't a link. I believe we got it at tractor supply
@@TheNakidGardeners do you remember the name , everything i am looking at just looks bigger
@@TeamTNT69 for the flooring, it is a 1/2 x 1 hardware cloth
Thanks but how to build it locally
Start with some 2x4s, make it to your liking. 30x30x30?
I built mine (from scratch with no plans) somewhat based on yours (definitely my favorite one on TH-cam, thanks) but with some differences. First it's not on legs, the lower box sits on the ground and I built a ramp into the side with hinges so that it can be opened to let the rabbits into a chicken wire yard in the mornings and evenings. I'm not so worried about predators because our cattle dog patrols the area frequently. Also I built a lot of latches into the doors and lifting roof. Anything that wants to get in there is going to have to work really hard while also being torn to pieces by dogs.
Oh wow sounds interesting. If you have pics on IG please tag us so we can see it.
Interesting but way too slow.
What was too slow?
Looks like you used PVC coated wire for the front mesh and used non-coated, larger mesh screen for the floor... I would have switched that around for sure. Coated wire for the floor is preferred, unless no babies will ever be in these cages.
Babies will be in the cages, however, they mostly stay in the nesting box for about 2-3 weeks. So we don't have to worry about them falling through the wire. We had these hutches now for quite some time without any issues. At week 6, we wean them off their mothers and put them on the rabbit tractor until it is time to harvest them.
Hi,while feeding hay its highly advised you tie up and hang the hay.reason being, you prevent diseases due to rabbits urinating or excreting on the and also helps in avoiding wastage..Good work though cheers
Appreciate the feedback. Thanks
Give them some branches to chew on from your fruit tree trimmings.
Yes, we give them some branches of our pine trees and pine cones already. We heard some fruit branches are not good, so we just stick to the pine

Yea, they will need something to chew on to keep their teeth filed down

😘
maybe dont keep them on wire?
We have plastic matts in there on the wire for them.
Do you have a supply list? Specifically how many boards of each size?
I start out all my projects with (12) 2x4 and rip them down so i can double the boards. I believe i used about 16-20 2x4s
@TheNakidGardeners thank you so much! Do you happen to rember how many you ripped down?
@@kristabroschart8626 sorry I do not. I think just the legs and the support pieces I kept whole
@TheNakidGardeners that's ok thank you for all the info anyway I really appreciate it!
I think the roof material is good for a rain catchment water system. Awesome design guys. Also I have a two story design where the rabbits can get away from animals that may come attack. It has helped tremendously. I am thinking of combining the hutch and colony Design. I have not done that yet but it’s something I am entertaining.
Thank you. We get comments about doing a water catchment system for the rabbits. But for days like today, it would help. We are below double-digit temps for a few days.
