You're correct to point out that the image quality hasn't significantly changed from the Onex to the X3. The main difference is the ease of use in the field with the improvements in the screens. As for improvements in the video quality and functions the differences are solely due to insta deliberately excluding the older cameras from accessing the latest software shot lab features, when these processes should be feasible from all the cameras with what are essentially the same video feeds. Obviously it's been done to encourage users to upgrade, creating perfectly usable but obsolete cameras and accessories.
Yes it’s a shame that they can’t just update the firmware on the older models - there will still be a market that will buy the new products but it would mean that they would get more support and respect from all owners.
Agreed. Buyers will continue to invest in older cameras and accessories still available for sale if they know the software will still support their camera. Don't think it would even require a firmware upgrade as the limiting factor is in the app. The format of the video is essentially identical between the cameras so no reason why all shot lab filters can't be applied to all camera videos. Would certainly boost customer loyalty as you say and wouldn't harm sales of the latest cameras. Overall they are the best 360 cameras out there and great for capturing epic videos.
This is why I've held off upgrading from my OneX. When filming in a flat profile, using none of the colour filters, I don't think there is any difference after editing and colour grading. I also really dont need a touch screen on every device.
I still have the one x but have been planning to get the X3 for a while for the same reasons as you, but not because of age 😅 Congrats on 50k! Been following since 2020 and even on fb 🙂 just one of your silent viewers...
I'm still running a OneX. It's a shame that over the years Insta360 have kept removing the ability for me to use certain shotlab effects but other than that it's been great. Battery life is pretty bad these days as the batteries no longer hold out as long as they once did, luckily I have 3! Looking forward to getting an X4 when it hopefully comes out late next year.
Hi Dave, yes when I did this video I’d forgotten how bad the battery life is - luckily I had a few batteries. At the very least I think insta should allow older cameras to do all the shot lab effects - it’s not a very good business model from the point of view of building a loyal following.
@@angelmendoza2040 not anymore. I think when the batteries were new I'd get around 40 mins, now it's less than 30 because the batteries are something like 4 years old.
You probably forgot now that you made this video! But I went looking for a One X / X3 comparison while uploading the video I took today using the One X. I also have the X3 and certainly I would normally use that, but today I went out for a ride on a Segway miniPro that I hadn't ridden for a few years, and decided that I wouldn't risk the X3 in case of a mishap. So out came the One X. And actually, I am perfectly happy with the outcome in terms of picture quality - but I had to ditch the audio due to wind noise. Yes, the One X is a pain to use - but not such a pain to lose! Thanks for the work you put into this.
Still plodding along with the one R although I rarely use the 4k lens. If do upgrade I would go for the x3. They may be up to the x10 by the time I do so
The X3 has options for sharpness and bitrate. In the test, were these set to "medium" and "high"? Note that the X2 does not have these settings. It may default to the X3's high sharpness and high bitrate, which could explain why find details in the X2 look sharper than the X3. With the X2 you could also choose the video encoding (H.264 vs. H.265), which the X3 does not have. In any case, many thanks for doing these tests!
My guess is that it will be spring next year but you never can tell as they release stuff with very short notice. I’d like to see higher resolution for standard video and higher frame rates for slow motion. I’d also like to see screw on lens guards and the ability to plug a mic in directly without the adapter.
Thumps up for real honest review. Video improvement from one X to X3 is still very minimal. The only thing that separates these 3 for my needs is that I like to shoot videos underwater and the X3 has the invisible dive case and the only reason why i upgraded from onex to X3. If no dive case, i would stay w/ the original one X because it still procedures great videos in good lighting conditions. X3 will be my last upgrade w/ 360 cam.
X3 is good enough for avg user. Good combination of price/features (for now). But it has to be used with lens and screen protectors. Did drop my camera from the motorcycle on the speed around 130km/h. All protectors are destroyed, camera body scratched, but everything is operational. And yeah... selfie stick can collapse when road isn't good.
@@EatSleep360 Nope. Recording wasn't started on that moment. But biggest quest was to find it (camera was mounted on the tail, so I didn't notice the moment when lost it). Quest: find small camera on the distance approx 10 km. of road and few villages )))
@@EatSleep360 BTW: support say in such cases "We are sorry,.... but camera doesn't has GPS module". So, if it cannot be found it's your problem. It’s a good reason but probably not a big enough reason unless you find the X2 screen frustrating. It is one of those features you love once you have it though
v nice review Rich! my choice is the x2 ( i have two now)... i cant justify leaving them and buying the x3... Quick q Rich... any obvious project for 2x 360 cameras? ... there must be some use for multiple 360 cameras...
Thanks mate - I try to avoid using two cameras at the same time as it’s more footage to edit. I suppose it’s useful for cycling or driving where you can have a camera at the front and the back. I thought you sold your 360 cameras ? Glad to hear you’re still shooting. 👍
Update the x3 u own upto firmware 1.066 ,,,the quality of footage single lense or 360 HDR or normal 360 is way better ,,is way better I'd not pick GoPro over it
Well, I've consistently thought the X2 was the X3, mostly guessed the One X right most of the time, so by this comparison, seems like a good condition used X2 is the winner for me
@@EatSleep360 Thanks but there is no way i'm dropping 500 quid + accessories for a 360 Cam. I already have a DJI Osmo Action 4 for POV shots and as a main shooter for motorcycle footage, I just need something that can get more angles for "cool value" shots and coverage in case I miss something off camera, don't really need quality that much.
For me having an insta 2 I feel the jump between models is just not that ground breaking enough to shell out another £500 , I think to a degree Insta do this on purpose as a marketing ploy by making improvements to entice serious fans just about enough to get their money out , I think the recent Go 3 is an example of this. Personally I think I will enjoy my Insta x2 until the x4 comes around and that will have improvements that really will put my Insta x2 away
Yes good points - I think there are a lot of people waiting to buy a 360 camera and they’re just wanting that big leap in specs. I do the same with iPhones and GoPros - I usually skip a year and wait for something big to happen.
I didn’t like what it did with the green grass colour but yes the X2 did extremely well and in some shots I would have guessed the x2 was the x3. I can see why so many haven’t upgraded.
why did not you use hdr video on x3 ? it makes a huge different in the sky, even $5k FF cameras that cannot do hdr video have blown out white sky instead of blue !
Because I wanted to have a level playing field just to see how well the one x did using basic features. It was just a fun test really that I wanted to do. But yes I agree the active hdr is excellent on the x3 and I compared it to my $5k Sony camera in a recent video and as you say it blew out the sky more than the X3 using active hdr. This can be avoided by shooting in log mode but takes extra time. Thanks for the comment.

Would you still recommend the OneX just for basic use for highway commuting?
