Agree with you about the overconsumption. I was proud of myself today - went to Bunnings, picked up two beautiful plants that i know nothing about and have no room for. I put them back and just left with my veggie seeds (spring onions and capsicum). Had to tell myself they are not Pokemon and i do not need them all!
2:19 I really appreciate how you always make a point to say things like "just me", "my environment", "my taste"... we're all different and come to plants for peace and belonging--no one needs to feel not good enough or 'wrong' for being ourselves and following our own journeys.
Really, we adults need this disclaimer? Thank God Trump won and we can take the woke kiddie gloves off I hate treating adults like overgrown 5 year olds.
Really love to hear you talk about overconsumption. Would you consider doing a full video on that topic? I think planty people are some of the best at upcycling (jars for propagations, takeaway containers for saucers, yogurt/drink cups for pots etc) and would love to hear what things you use to save buying something new, or what you keep to reuse instead of throwing out. I don't think enough people talk about this.
once i got a major pest outbreak and it really led me to identify which plants id put the work into saving verus ones i didn't mind tossing, i went down the road of 'why do i have plants i don't mind tossing in the first place?' and its so great to see influencers, especially with large followings, address it with honesty! loved everything you said in your 'outro' :)
That is actually a good test !! It's like when I move house - do I like this plant enough to bring it into my next house with me ?! - that really helped me get rid of a few :)
Your content actually helps me buy less new plants and put my focus on growing what I already have to the best of my ability. I for sure fell into the trap of buying lots of plants without thinking about the space they will take up if I’m successful at growing them. I lost a big chunk of my collection when I neglected them due to my own ill health around a year ago and as I build back up I’m being much more intentional this time around. I think the culture around houseplants is shifting a lot as well. Prices are dropping due to tc, and a lot of people that got swept up in the hobby during lockdown no longer have the time for a massive collection. It all feels a bit less frantic I guess. In 2019-2022ish there was a bit of a scarcity mindset and I think never knowing when the next lockdown would be triggered the primitive parts of our brains into feeling like it’s was very important to collect and stockpile. Controlling what we can when we feel out of control and all that 😅
Put the Majestic into the garden and let nature decide if it survives outside. At least then you can push it to the back corner (with its large wing span) 😂 I agree with your comments about overconsumption. We need to be happy with a manageable number of plants in our home space.
My Phil.Sharoniae was a birthday gift that I had wanted very much because I loved the shade & shape of the leaves. Sharon "didn't like me" though and dropped her final leaf 2 weeks ago. That settles it - not getting another one!
I can relate. You have high hopes for some plants at first until you realize the truth. I went through that twice last year with my Philodendron Ring of Fire and Philodendron Chocolate Empress. Both are beautiful plants, buuuuuuuuuuut I didn’t realize how much of a spread they would have until it was too late. Gave them both to my mom since she has a greenhouse and also likes Philodendrons.
That's why I didn't buy the ring of fire. Very pretty if you have the space though, I will probably buy one variegated bird's nest anthurium and then no other plants like that.
Thank you for sharing your concerns about overconsumption. It is something that we sometimes tend forget as we grow our pretty indoor jungles. When I buy plants, I try to find one to specifically fit that space where I want to have a plant. This way, I am not just buying everything I find pretty, but a plant that is optically fitting the space I want to fill and that likely going to thrive in that location. The downside: Sometimes I have to wait a very long time until I find the plant I am looking for. 😅
if you want to keep the majestic as a juvenile, maybe try to grow it without a moss pole? Will probably feel very wrong to you, but it should help to have it not mature so fast. This also remind me that I´m pretty sure I got a majestic cutting at some point late last summer, but I can´t remember what I did with it. I have to look though my prop boxes if it´s still there 😂 (I had thrips and lost some plants, so it might be gone and I also cut a couple up and threw them in a prop box to deal with late) At least I know very well that I don´t have the space for crawlers and never got one :D I have a pariso verde, got it for free because the old owner couldn´t get it to variegate. It gret really nice in summer but living in denmark I knew it will grow only green in winter. So I choped it into peaces, I will pot a few of them together soon and hope it grows nicely again over summer. And I hope that I can get it to simply not grow many leaves in winter so it doesn´t get too green, or I try giving it a heat mat or putting it on top of my radiator, not sure now.
I really loved this! 🥰At the beginning I bought a range of plants that didn't work for my space & conditions - after trial and error I know what works and what doesn't. There are a lot of plants that I adore looking at, but I know they just wouldn't work for my space and so I admire them from afar 😇I really enjoy your channel because you are about getting the most out of the plants that you have and you inspire me to do the same. 🤗
I appreciate the balance of plant success, plant failures, and plant warnings in your videos. It is winter time in the northern hemisphere and I am dreaming of spring and summer when stuff is growing lush and green. I would love to add a houseplant or two, but I have been able to restrain myself. Transferring the plants from the store to the car and then into my house could give them a nasty temperature shock. At the big box stores, it also looks like some of the plants I am on the lookout for, are in a recovery state. So the no-buy in the winter time helps restrain my buying. I find the whale fin snake plant fascinating, but I also know that once I got it home, it would be boring in the long run. One big blade! But I still have to restrain myself! I do have a few regrets over plants I have purchased. They are mostly over plants that died on me. For the most part, they do not get a second chance. I noticed you tie up the leaves with long petioles. Great idea. I have a monstera that is claiming too much real estate. I should try that. Great video. Your reasons for why you regret buying a plant is very helpful. Thank you!
I really enjoy seeing your "meh" plants..lol. It really helps me figure out what they will be like later. Hoyas aren't my favourite. I'd only have one, and that would be a piece of my dear mother's plant that she loved.
yup, at the start very guilty of impulse buying, and guilty of not thinking about when they get bigger, not too bad about having every single type of each species, surprisingly my tenue is one of my best, she is outside in the greenhouse and is thriving, latest leaf is 17 cm long, and hasn't hardened off yet, and my crawlers are also thriving and huge(but your right about the leaves being all over the place), I'm about to take a cutting off one and try growing it on a vertical pole horizontally, hoping I can hang it in the shadehouse.I love your content, it's so real ,honest and informative.... don't change a thing 🤩😊🦦
Thank you Jan! Very timely for me. I backed out of buying a P. esmeralda cross and ordered the P. patriciae instead. A longtime grower, now a collection of 150+ orchids, but also started a small collection of plants for moss poles. I don't like the long petioles either being space hogs. I appreciate your informative videos so much! 🙏😀
We all buy plants that don’t work out. You need to find what works for your style of growing and your conditions. Looking online helps somewhat but the plants you see are curated in optimal conditions Yours probably will turn out differently. It’s all part of the journey of finding what you like, what grows right for you!! When you go to the store you make an educated guess based on what you like and what will probably grow well. The hard part is finding homes for the ones that don’t work out. 😝 Thanks for the great, honest video 💚
Thanks :) it is definitely part of the hobby & part of the learning curve ... but I often see it being a bit excessive online these days! You can make your learning with 1 plant .... you don't need 50 crystallinum hybrids to learn the same lesson 50 times :D
One of the best videos I've seen to date on TH-cam! (all SM really) insightful and gave me a sense of relief as I have a few plants that see me and they just roll their eyes as I walk past. Gonna say they just dont spark me joy at all. Its Hoyas, that my hoya obsessed mother gave me and honestly I'm convinced they unionized as a bunch of mean girls on a mission to just continuously pack the biggest sad. Cant give them away so waiting for them to just....move on by themselves 😂😂😂. Thanks for sharing with us what we all wanna say out loud but dont!
I definitely bought too many plants when I first started the hobby. I hadn’t figured out what I really liked yet, and I liked them all. Now, I have mostly monstera, a few philodendron and Hoya. I focus more on growing and less on buying now. 😊
I regret buying so many similar plants at the same time. But I’m glad to say those days are behind me. Because yes, the overconsumption aspect of life is something I am actively trying to resist. Great video.
It wasn’t long that I realized I needed to google mature images before acquisition. This video is great for learning curve elimination for new collectors.
This video is so relatable and offers a bit of much-needed common sense in the plant hobbyist/collection world. I'm also sick of plant haul and import videos driving plant consumption. I have 4 of the 7 you featured: Majestic, Sharaoniae, Plowmanii and Sodiroi. I'm enjoying them still, but this video really helps me see that I don't need any more!
I actually bought some moss poles after watching your videos for a while, because you inspire me to try and help some of my plants reach their full potential. But i am going to be very selective as I have limited space with good light and only buy plants after lots of research. I have a couple of plants that bring me no joy and I would never buy again. Like I'm just waiting for my blechnum silver lady fern to die but the princess keeps hanging on by a thread and I am deluding myself into thinking maybe I will unlock the secret to making her happy one day 😅
i agree with you! i used to buy plants just because. but over time ive been slowly giving them away and im happy with the few that i enjoy taking care of. some plants i regret buying are PPP, p.sodiroi, 2 rex begonias, scindapsus moonlight, and pothos marble queen. i realized my true favorites are brasil/heartleaf/trailing philos, anthurium, alocasia, and syngonium.
Enjoying your plant Journey and Musings. My Wish list grows and declines depending on your reviews.I have been gifted plants from friends that they needed to selectively purge some of their collection. I love receiving plants from friends, it adds to my Plant story. I am sure the plants that aren't playing well at your home, would brighten up someone elses.
eh, when they are teeny tiny little ones, i cannot resist to bring them home and put all my best wishes on them. however, when they grow large, i cannot find a place to fit them in . pretty like raising children. we have to kick them out when they grow up. however, the whole experience is priceless.
Thanks for the chat about overconsumption. I couldn't agree more! I only got into the hobby last March. I'm excited for the first spring with my collection in the northern hemisphere! I'm quite thrifty by nature, but also have tendencies towards getting obsessed with things and going hard and fast at the start. 😅 I was buying (or gifted, trading) plants at perhaps an untenable rate last summer, but almost all were cuttings or small plants from local hobbyists or friends. I didn't overspend and I can feel good about where my money is going. However, in retrospect I should have allowed more time for my own learning curve. Also, I live in a small apartment and the space concerns are real, as you mentioned! It's already a bit crowded in here with around 100 plants, and many could grow much larger. I've seen some videos from back in the early pandemic plant craze that make me glad I came to it later. It sounds like many plants are more accessible and affordable now. I'm mostly on a self-imposed "plant ban" for the winter, but I'll be looking for ways to keep my consumption more reasonable and to be overall more sustainable in my practices going forward.
Very good! Completely agree with your concern regarding over consumption. I have the last two plants you mentioned and like them quite a bit. Under a soltech light they are both growing with short internodal spacing and not terribly fast. Just what I like.
You hit the spot on overconsumption. I still fall into the trap of spontanious buying plants, though much rarer these days. I sold some of my "unwanted" plants, and regularly give away others. Oh, and I've unalived a few, too. But I still love my sodiroi, which has much shorter petioles than yours ever did, by the way, and I loved your ernestii. Just don't have space for another moss pole, otherwise I'd have bought one the moment you made that plant spot video on it.
I have a Manjula pothos that I just love. I have propagated it several times and find myself finding more spots for it around the house, and wanting to get rid of other plants in order to have more Manjulas. I think it does take awhile to find out "this is what I love…" Fortunately people seem willing to take my downsized plants. I think as I’ve dealt with pests, and room, and motivation, that I’ve started to find what gives me more joy. My family is impressed I can now leave the plant store with nothing. 😂
I agree with you. I don't get plants that need to climb because I don't have room. And I only get plants that I like the look of them. I do have two monsteras but they don't have to have a moss pole. 😊
I loved this video, you are so conscientious this video is so thoughtful. I have fallen victim to plant over consumption also. I am also guilty of letting certain plants die if I have no one to give them too. I bought lots before I knew my tastes properly, and now my ugly leafless croton shames me every time I see if. I still water it but it hates my conditions & I can’t stand the colouring of it. It’s too bright for me 🤣. Have hidden it on my sons windowsill, that’s the windowsill of shame. I also have a very leggy, very not variegated paraiso verde I wanted what I saw online and didn’t consider the conditions I have. There’s a lot of sense in making more considerate purchases & resisting temptation. I’d much rather have plants I love than ones I keep alive out of buyers remorse type of obligation.
You have such a nice voice. I will not buy any more Calathea and Pepperonia plants, they die. After 50 years of plants and most of it living in Sweden, I avoid them.
So the plants he don’t like are monstera siltepecana 2:19 monstera siltepecana El Salvador 3:43 philodendron majestic 5:13 philodendron Ernestii 13:01 philodendron plowmanii 16:02 philodendron prasio verde 21:48 Philodendron tenue 25:07 and finally philodendron Sharoniae and esmeraldense aswell as philodendron patriciae very long vid but I love it❤️💕
One positive about doing this hobby on a strict budget is that my collection is super curated. I don't have that many plants but all the plants I have are my favourite plants. I don't have 10 alocasias, I only have one Tandurusa, because that is my favourite alocasia and I never find another I like just as or more than, so I don't bother. I really have to fall in love with a plant and daydream obsessiviely enough about it to buy it. And if there are plants that are not worth the lechusa pon they're standind in I kill the plant and reuse the pon for another plant that I love. . . I am brutal....
Very interesting topic. I think we all had that phase while we bought everything just to own it. I hear so much people that are telling me they are overwhelmed by their plants, and they lose the passion. They think it’s because they have too many plants, I think they have, or should better say "WE" have too many plants we don’t like 😢😂.
Great video! I was very tempted to buy a fuzzy tradescantia. It wasn't expensive, but I was pretty sure it wasn't going to survive in my care, so I did the responsible thing and passed on it. I would never buy polkadot (Hypoestes) plants again. They did well, but they flowered, and they dropped those flowers constantly. They were the messiest plants to have as houseplants.
I discovered the world of plants 3 months ago. I had never heard of all these varieties. The more I learned about plants that can be grown indoors the more plants I wanted. I now have 95. 😮All of them have been impulse plants. Only one plant was over $20, a Thai constellation for $30. I now am at the stage of making deliberate choices in buying plants. I'm concentrating on taking care of the plants I have and only plan on keeping the ones that give me joy. Luckily I have 4 adult granddaughters who have asked for any plants I might fall out of love with. One of my favorite is a crawling philodendron .
I really appreciate your take on consumption and social media! I definitely have purchased plans impulsively that I wish I hadn't. I actually bought a plowmanii not knowing what it was, Aunt. I will definitely have to rehome it because it is taking up way too much space. Typically I give stuff away on Facebook but I recently deleted my Facebook account so I'm not sure how I will give away plants now but I'll have to figure it out LOL
Ernestii is definitely a regretful buy and many others 😅 I’ve decided to turn my little garden bed into a veggie garden patch. I think my patio and all other areas of the house is enough for all my houseplants 😂
Instead of ‘Where’s Waldo?’ it’s ’Where’s Bradley!’. I have a self-discipline rule. The plants I buy have to have a designated spot in my home with a plan for their growth BEFORE I buy them. I have a decorator mindset.
I love going and checking out plants for something usual or on my basically nonexistent bucket list, but honestly, these days I'm likely to walk away empty handed. There's a syngonium I Might get to add to a preexisting pot, but mostly I have a bunch of immature plants and I'm happy just working on them right now. As an aside, if i were in a climate like you, idk if I could resist the urge to grow that smaller vine on the same pole as your giant spreading cabbage xD two plants I wasn't enamoured with? Time to experiment!
Great advice! My problem plant is verrucosum. They're always inside with grow lights, humidifiers, and lots of TLC. I'm on my third purchase, which had multiple plants that are also now dying off . They get a small new leaf, which slowly browns off and shrivels up. But there's always a new shoot coming, so I hang on in hope. 🤞 I think they're just depressing me , so tomorrow I'm tossing them out, along with a few others .
Laughed a LOT So fun I do understand you! The growth pattern matters a lot, but, I’ve understood that only after lot of time😅 That was a good journey Thank you very much for the videos Aahahaha growing potatoes instead ❤ You are on the right side, no doubt!
After I had almost 60 philodendrons and some really conquered the space, I had the similiar feeling too. I just let go my billitie because I hate its air roots that went everywhere and the way the stems swayed 😅
My worst plant by far is a dieffenbachia!! Yours seem to do so well😢 but all three of mine hated me. Got a gorgeous seguine that was large and full. Brought it home and put next to a north facing window but it was big, DIRECTLY under a grow light and it dropped like 30 of its lower leaves in a month and only the tops would grow, tried saving her only to have to get spider mites, like absolute infestation. Took a leaf and treated it and propagated, months later got full and somehow they came back infesting. Then I bought a white one and thrips almost immediately took it over and I’ve never been so done with a plant I immediately put her outside, I’m sure she’ll enjoy the Florida sun. Recently went into a local nursery and they had a GOURGOUS diffenbachia that looks just like the paraiso verde leafs when grown in hot temperatures, and I was tempted but I reminded myself how high maintenance they are and they are not for me, so I quickly decided not to do it
I have identical experiences with crawlers and Paraiso Verde. I also had lots of alocasia, but... Never again 😅 Spider mites magnet, rot magnet, ultra long petioles in my lighting conditions and dark and quite cold winters (Poland). I don't buy new plants for a long time now. I got inspired by Your huge plants on moss poles some time ago, and now I have mature Monstera tuberculata, which I love, because it doesn't get pests and grows quite quickly under my growing lights.
So I purchased/was gifted two philodendron pink princesses. I am enjoying one but not the other as it is growing much better while the second was growing and now seems to be dying off. I regret the purchase because I did not need two but they were plant surprises and were chosen for me. I have not since purchased any more plant surprise boxes so I am not receiving plant duplicates as the shop is clearly just trying to get rid of surplus.
Understood. I too have made some plants that turned out to be disappointment, either arrived poorly already or the plant did like my grow environment at all. Have you ever considered growing Australian orchids, specifically Dendrobium speciosum? They would look amazing in your outdoor garden and the flowers will fill your garden with lovely fragrance. Just a suggestion 😊
I just went through the thought of buying plants to complete the family 😂. I have a regular Florida and it has matured pretty fast. I also have a bronze that’s not doing so well but I’m kinda happy because of the amount of space it would take up and the green already gives me issues with placement and space. I almost bought a Florida ghost and beauty to complete the collection but I have so many plants and some nicely large ones. I didn’t want to add stress. I’m always moving around my plants due to space and conditions. If I had the space I’d have no problem getting those plants but I don’t want the headache. I’ve finally come to a balance of being ok with the amount of plants I have. I refuse to get a crawler and as soon as spring hits I’ll be combining some plants together to give space. Doesn’t stop me from wanting those plants but if I cannot give the space this will affect the conditions which I don’t care to deal with. Maybe if I had a greenhouse I’d be able to have those plants. I’m letting go of my majestic and I’m on the fence about my Philodendron Paraiso Verde due to no variegation and I cannot let it live outside. It’s too cold.I have become more mindful of the plants I get and I do more research to see if I can give it the conditions it needs.
Tastes are different :) as long as you are convinced you actually want it and not just want it because somebody (me) told u to get it than that's a great way of going about it :)
Same here! Just bought a Philo. Red Andersson which to me combines a White and a Punk Princess in one plant. I own both, so now I can save on space, getting rid of those princesses and taking good care of the Andersson. And I also know that at some point I will have to get rid of some of my "family photo" heart-shaped philos because of space restrictions, but I still cannot decide which ones. My Melano AND my Gigas are both doing so well, also my Glorious is slowly improving. So what to do, which ones to keep since they all look so similar, and eventually I wont have the space for all of them. But thanks for your thoughts on this, it helps to consciously think about curating ones collection. Cheers from Germany
I did this over buying of plants in the beginning of my journey, jury got the sake of buying, no more thank God, I got my wish list to fill but that’s it now… I hope
Definitely made the mistake of buying a plant for the sake of it luckily I was able to rehouse mine but so many plants go to waste that’s why I use the sleep on it rule. Sometimes more isn’t always better
In the beginning of my plant collecting I was obsessed with Phalaenopsis orchids.. i went crazy collecting all the colors then i ran out of space!! I like to give plants away when I'm over them...
😌plants I wouldn't buy again: calathea's (they don't like my conditions 😮💨 and hoya's that only have a handful of leaves. Sometimes they grow weird and if a plant, albeit a baby, already has a ton of leaves and vines I can better "see" what it's going to look like when bigger. So I learned to stay clear of any that are just rooted cuttings with a few leaves. 🤭Plants that I fall out of love with I usually post on a local market place (kleinanzeigen) for free / a few euros or I give them to friends. 😇
My Calathea Black Dottie Prayer Plant was my first and only Calathea. It was so pretty in the store. That’s the only good thing I can say about that plant. I “accidentally” left it outside this winter. 😅
That spot next to the discorea discolour at the bottom of the steps needs an aquarium! You can explore growing plants aquatically vertically! 😅😅🎉 I think you would enjoy keeping a single cichlid (pronounced sick-lid) and doing bi-weekly water changes getting free organic fertilizer for your terrestrial plants. It's very peaceful for you and Bradley especially when you're away! Ps: anthurium and philodendron grow very well hydroponic.
i would definitely start over the majestic one more time, mine was sizing up nicely too but then it just stopped at one point where it still had the acceptable leaf size and pattern. its still such a beautiful plant. also, mine in the colder european weather, growing indoors doesnt produce such long petials so maybe its worth a try keeping it relatively far from a growlight so it doesnt mature as quickly, but who knows, im not an expert, it may produce even longer petials in lower light
I regret my Glorious purchase. I live in the desert and frequently have less than 20% humidity. I'm now focusing on plants that can handle my environment.
You could do stand up comedy about the plants you don't like and I'd watch every second of it. The rants about the majestic and sharoniae were really funny. I was considering the Sharoniae but seeing what it looks like mature I'm going to pass on it. I'm sad that my black velvet and azlanii don't like me at all and I adore them. The only one that loves me out of all my Alocasia is my cuprea. I'm slowly but surely accepting that I may have to let go of certain ones despite my love for them and embracing those that love me and thrive in my collection. I do take stock every month and see what's thriving, coasting and dying.
every plant is a project or a challenge. As long as i have space i will keep buying and trying. no regret ever. are there plants i want more or in a diffrent size ? yep but they are expensive or i dont have the space right now. That philondendron looks like you need 2 in a pot or 2 next to eachother and give it a corner spot so it fills the entire corner. some plants are just better in a certain position. large leaf with wide growth is excelent for a corner and they are limited by the 90 degree walls they are against and light is generally away so they go to the light. this all leads to a nice full look in a corner. i have actually bin looking for pots with 2 halves so you can plant 2 plants in 1 pot but still have the root systems seperate. Maby using a room devider to make 2x 90 degree corners is also an option. I love ina way to small house for most plants aswel and frankly you have to get creative or buy vertical plants.
OK, I just removed Majestic from my wishlist :-) Esmeraldense, Plowmanii and Gloriosum stays there for now - If we move to bigger space, I´d at least like to try them once because they are so beautiful.
Weird is your experience with philodendron Splendid. I find it the easiest to grow. It grows like a weed for me, has really beautiful leaves, propagates easily and is pest and disease free. One of my favs.
I definitely regret purchasing Alocasia Poly, I live in Malta and it really is very dramatic during winter. I keep on trying to revive it in some moss, it gives me hope and then just dies out...
Have you tried keeping the root system small for trying to keep juvenile stage? Just a random thought that came to mind, not sure if it will work for all types of plants I had a Paraiso Verde… It only grew variegated leaves in the heat of summer upstairs, thats 27-above 30 Celsius… and it hit the ceiling within a year due to large internodal spacing…. I gave cuttings of it away and eventually the motherplant as well 😅 Its much better indeed to grow plants that accept your conditions… The ones that don’t are so much work! Can only keep a few of them happy What actually surprises me is that you still have so many of these plants that you don’t really enjoy 🤔.. Why is that? To experiment? For filming? Or just because they are already there? There are several types of Sharoniae (I had one that had short inter-nodal spacing indoors with not the best light, just on a support pole, not a moss pole) I bought quite a bunch of Hoyas a couple of years ago…. Leafwise some of them could be fillers…. But the thing about Hoyas is also the flowers…. Some with relatively boring or the same leaves have awesome flowers or nice smelling ones. I got rid of the ones that I didn’t like (popular once that I was influenced to buy).. theres still so many left, my goal is to rehome 10-15 this year and I cannot choose which… so yeah, no fillers 😂 Agreed… houseplants are a first world “problem” Overconsumption, is hard to avoid sadly, but we can be concious and try 😊 Theres a lot of people who are trying to be more mindful in the houseplant hobby these days Regret: most Alocasia… its rehab, take out of the tent, root rot, rehab etc… I don’t want to permanently grow plants in tents, so after I rehabbed them last year I gave them away I give most plants that I fell out of love with either to friends and family or to a nice lady in my area who helps people to start off with houseplants (most of my propagations also go to her). Either that or if its a hard-to-get/finicky plant Ill try to sell it Really need to learn to use the bin though and stop propagating without a goal in mind, that would be better for me personally
Have strted an experiment with my plowmanii in a smaller pot to just keep it stunted ... let's see how that goes :) And yes, I often keep 'unwnated' plants around because they give me an opportunity to experiment without 'risking' anything or they help me make content like this video for example. If I wasn't a plant youtuber they'd be long gone :P
For the dilemma of wanting your crawlers to stay juvenile. Do you think trying to have them climb would keep them in a younger state since it isn’t their preferred way of growing? Maybe that way they stay smaller and doing that might reduce their footprint in your home.
I regret buying three plants (all Calatheas) simply because of the amount of time I’ve spent trying to keep them alive. And yet those bastards still give me regular crisped up leaves for no discernible reason. Two of my plants made your list, but I understand the rationale and bear no grudges. Might have been different if either of them had been likened to a cabbage though.
I am trying to downsize, because I don’t need duplicates in my small apartment, so I sell propagations and plantlets to fellow student for the cost of materials (or a tiny bit more if it’s a more rare plant), so like 1-5€ ❤️
Mine isn't a huge plant but I have struggled with a philo brandiantum. I've bought 3 now and could not recover the damage to the first one so I tried again, the second one was a cutting and it's growing (very slow) not much of a plant. So I bought a 3rd and it came with so much rotted stems and leaves and I'm very unhappy with the seller because they were not going to make it right. So I swore this is the last time.. If I can't get this brandi to grow lush and beautiful like other ones I've seen, then I give up on her! 😅😭
How about your philo lupinum? because it's the only plant I've ever regretted buying...LOL Sometimes we have to or even just realize that the plants we buy are not to our taste 💚🤞💚
Sorry to break it to you but some of us followers need plants around us to survive.😁Plants and plant chores have a positive impact on mental health! I can't imagine a life without them.
I'm on the same page .... I didn't say one shouldn't grow plants?! ... just saying you can surround yourself with quality plants you actually like & that like you back instead of just aiming for sheer volume & short-term gratification by buying plants non-stop. Surely spending money on plants that then just die isn't good for ones mental health either ;)
Well, I'm probably guilty of buying plants just because I like buying and having plants😂 But, to be true, I don't really feel guilty about it. Plants make me happy and they bring a nice green jungle-like look into my house.🌿 I'm not much into collecting certain trendy species and rather like a wide variety of different shades of green and leaf-shapes. So my "collection" has one purpose and that is to make me happy😅 My daughter is always happy to take some plants of mine to her house and for self-control reasons I don't order plants online, until now this strategy works for me😂😅
I died at the "I'd have to replace my entire couch with crawling philodendron, that's not very useful when I'm trying to watch the telly at night is it"
Don't be sad about Paraiso verde, because seeing your videos, I think you wouldn't have liked it. I grow it in South Mexico outside (so hot, humid and plenty of space) and it needs plenty of space because it grows one leaf left, one leaf right and with quite a long petiole. hahaha Jose buono is a much better option!!!!!
This is good topic.. hehehe thx jan. Im drawn to orchid's hoarding now i keep buying even if some of them they dont like me hahahaha i killed so many 😂😂😂😂 i need to control my self buying agian i dont have a space and im waisting money .. i'm not rich😅🥴🥴🥴🙃😵💫
I regret buying a dubia cutting... it has never left the prop box stage. Also, I am really struggling with fungal issues (?) in my Anthuriums. Big patches, that turn kind of transparent and then crispy. Did you experience that as well?
@@adam2802 yes, it looks like oedema 🤔 I tried to let them dry out a bit in between watering, but then they skip the transparent phase and get crispy edges right away 😅 Maybe, I did not find the right Balance of frequency and volume, yet. And Winter is not helpfull as well. Anyway, thanks for your answer! I keep on trying 😉
I regret my phil. painted lady. Bought it after some youtubers said it was better in real life than on screen but never really liked how it looks and it hates me as well
I hate that I wasted money on plants that don’t do it for me. I get a bad feeling when I look at them but can’t get rid of them because it feels like a waste of money, so then I’m stuck caring for a plant that makes me feel bad. I need to be strong and give them away…
Love the pokemon reference 🙌🙌 good on you!
2:19 I really appreciate how you always make a point to say things like "just me", "my environment", "my taste"... we're all different and come to plants for peace and belonging--no one needs to feel not good enough or 'wrong' for being ourselves and following our own journeys.
Agree, I think it is silly to hate on other peoples love of plants.
Really, we adults need this disclaimer? Thank God Trump won and we can take the woke kiddie gloves off I hate treating adults like overgrown 5 year olds.
omg did someone really just leave a pro-Trump comment under my video ?! :D how do I block them ?!
@sydneyplantguy MAGA FOREVER 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅🦅
@@sydneyplantguy Australia is regarded y'all hate women and love troonzgender, worry about yourself bruh 💅🏼
I have actually started writing dome some notes on that topic :) so there'll be a video eventually :)
once i got a major pest outbreak and it really led me to identify which plants id put the work into saving verus ones i didn't mind tossing, i went down the road of 'why do i have plants i don't mind tossing in the first place?' and its so great to see influencers, especially with large followings, address it with honesty! loved everything you said in your 'outro' :)
Controlling what we can when we feel out of control and all that 😅
That's nice to hear :) happy growing :)
I gift the plants that no longer bring me joy. Another Great episode!!
Good on you 🙌🙌
Put the Majestic into the garden and let nature decide if it survives outside. At least then you can push it to the back corner (with its large wing span) 😂
I agree with your comments about overconsumption. We need to be happy with a manageable number of plants in our home space.
I think I will!! The other one survived in the greenhouse all year so it might even tolerate the cold :)
My Phil.Sharoniae was a birthday gift that I had wanted very much because I loved the shade & shape of the leaves. Sharon "didn't like me" though and dropped her final leaf 2 weeks ago. That settles it - not getting another one!
well, at least you tried :)
I only look for plants that I can take care of. I am so glad you did this video. Calathea
Great attitude 🙌🙌
if you want to keep the majestic as a juvenile, maybe try to grow it without a moss pole? Will probably feel very wrong to you, but it should help to have it not mature so fast.
This also remind me that I´m pretty sure I got a majestic cutting at some point late last summer, but I can´t remember what I did with it. I have to look though my prop boxes if it´s still there 😂 (I had thrips and lost some plants, so it might be gone and I also cut a couple up and threw them in a prop box to deal with late)
At least I know very well that I don´t have the space for crawlers and never got one :D
I have a pariso verde, got it for free because the old owner couldn´t get it to variegate.
You have raised some very valid points Jan - more than consumption I enjoy social media for learning = knowledge 👍👍👍
That's the best kind of social media use! 🙌
So powerful when you come to the realisation that you can enjoy plants WITHOUT owning them :)
Thank you!
Glad it was helpful :)
Patriciae is a great choice! 👌 :) thanks !
Thanks for the great, honest video 💚
Thanks for sharing with us what we all wanna say out loud but dont!
you lost me at HOYAS hahaha :D thanks :)
@sydneyplantguy 😂😂😂 💯 % the struggle is real. Zero joy in a hoya for me. If they weren't gifts they would've been in the compost already!
This video is so cathartic, nearly every plants mentioned i agree with. i got rid off so many since the early days
Thank you :)
It wasn’t long that I realized I needed to google mature images before acquisition. This video is great for learning curve elimination for new collectors.
Yeah took me like 2 years so came to that conclusion :D oopsie haha :D
YOU ARE ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS. Thank you for your added value to society. ♥️
Thank you:)
Glad it was helpful :)
Thanks for the words in the end of the video ❤ aaaaand yes I just let the unloving plant die in the corner, or outside in the winter.
I am sure the plants that aren't playing well at your home, would brighten up someone elses.
well, gifted plants is always great hehe :)
eh, when they are teeny tiny little ones, i cannot resist to bring them home and put all my best wishes on them. however, when they grow large, i cannot find a place to fit them in . pretty like raising children. we have to kick them out when they grow up. however, the whole experience is priceless.
As long as you are enjoying the journey :)
Sounds like a very healthy approach :) I also got a lot of my plants via plant swaps :) that's probably the best way to go about it :)
I absolutely love how you were talking about the majestic 🤣🤣I absolutely feel all of that about some of my plants LOL
Jan when you said "stanley cup" I thought you meant hocckey! Silly Canadian here.. 😂👍
Honestly, you live on the right side of the internet if you don't instantly think of those horrendous reusable cups !! I'm jealous :D
@ my granddaughter wanted one but this Oma wasn’t spending $50! On a cup
It’s the cat for me grooming itself at the top of the stairs 😹
I like how you show your failures because a lot of us feel like you can grow about anything 😂 Love little Brad 06:38 ❤❤❤
Good on you !
Yes it's sad to hear when people lose the joy for this hobby because they overdid it. As with everything in life, it's good to have a healthy balance
Deleting FB sounds like such a good idea !!!!
Good on you !!
Each plant has been a learning curve. Not only for you but all of us.
Time to experiment!
once again i am drinking my coffee and agreeing with you out loud while my cat judges me from her sunny spot on the stairs lol
I think your cat would judge even if you'd disagree :P
@ you are very right about that lol
Wow, this video is very helpful 👏I always learn a lot from u.thank you 😊
Thanks! 😊
Laughed a LOT
So fun
I do understand you!
The growth pattern matters a lot, but, I’ve understood that only after lot of time😅
That was a good journey
Thank you very much for the videos
Aahahaha growing potatoes instead
❤
You are on the right side, no doubt!
Hehe thanks :)
After I had almost 60 philodendrons and some really conquered the space, I had the similiar feeling too. I just let go my billitie because I hate its air roots that went everywhere and the way the stems swayed 😅
It’s a massive soace committment that one !!!
Happy growing :)
Just a suggestion 😊
mmm haven't really gotten into orchids at all! Feel like it's a rabbit hole I'm not readdy to go down (yet)
If anything you convinced me more I wanted the ernestii that I have been eyeing, not as much a fan of velvet leaves and I find her beautiful.
Tastes are different :) as long as you are convinced you actually want it and not just want it because somebody (me) told u to get it than that's a great way of going about it :)
@sydneyplantguy Quite the opposite :) You really do have some gloriously beautiful plants and I appreciate the time you take.
Cheers from Germany
love your thinking :D
Great video/lesson, as usual, Jan. Yassss ... knowledge is power. Speaking of, what sites do you use to research a plant's requirements? Thanks.
I usually just google :D Thanks :)
I like to give plants away when I'm over them...
birthday & christmas presents for everybody sorted haha :D
I have done that, as well. 👀
oh nooo!! did I leave that plant outside during the snow storm? How unfortunate :O
Also maybe you should grow your crawlers as trailing plants in a hanging pot?
I saw a hanging pot of gloriosum at the botanic gardens yesterday thought the same 😂
@@sydneyplantguy great minds think alike!
i would definitely start over the majestic one more time, mine was sizing up nicely too but then it just stopped at one point where it still had the acceptable leaf size and pattern. its still such a beautiful plant. also, mine in the colder european weather, growing indoors doesnt produce such long petials so maybe its worth a try keeping it relatively far from a growlight so it doesnt mature as quickly, but who knows, im not an expert, it may produce even longer petials in lower light
I’ll give it one more shot :)
I regret my Glorious purchase. I live in the desert and frequently have less than 20% humidity. I'm now focusing on plants that can handle my environment.
🌵
You could do stand up comedy about the plants you don't like and I'd watch every second of it. The rants about the majestic and sharoniae were really funny. I was considering the Sharoniae but seeing what it looks like mature I'm going to pass on it. I'm sad that my black velvet and azlanii don't like me at all and I adore them. The only one that loves me out of all my Alocasia is my cuprea. I'm slowly but surely accepting that I may have to let go of certain ones despite my love for them and embracing those that love me and thrive in my collection. I do take stock every month and see what's thriving, coasting and dying.
same here !! Cuprea is the only one that really likes me back :P
every plant is a project or a challenge.
Keeping it real Jan ❤
Great video ❤..
Thank you!:)
Weird is your experience with philodendron Splendid. I find it the easiest to grow. It grows like a weed for me, has really beautiful leaves, propagates easily and is pest and disease free. One of my favs.
Splendid, yes, majestic, no :O
@sydneyplantguy oops! I meant Majestic not Splendid.
I definitely regret purchasing Alocasia Poly, I live in Malta and it really is very dramatic during winter. I keep on trying to revive it in some moss, it gives me hope and then just dies out...
Have you tried keeping the root system small for trying to keep juvenile stage?
Just a random thought that came to mind, not sure if it will work for all types of plants
I had a Paraiso Verde… It only grew variegated leaves in the heat of summer upstairs, thats 27-above 30 Celsius… and it hit the ceiling within a year due to large internodal spacing…. I gave cuttings of it away and eventually the motherplant as well 😅
Its much better indeed to grow plants that accept your conditions…
The ones that don’t are so much work! Can only keep a few of them happy
What actually surprises me is that you still have so many of these plants that you don’t really enjoy 🤔.. Why is that?
To experiment? For filming? Or just because they are already there?
There are several types of Sharoniae (I had one that had short inter-nodal spacing indoors with not the best light, just on a support pole, not a moss pole)
I bought quite a bunch of Hoyas a couple of years ago….
Leafwise some of them could be fillers…. But the thing about Hoyas is also the flowers…. Some with relatively boring or the same leaves have awesome flowers or nice smelling ones. I got rid of the ones that I didn’t like (popular once that I was influenced to buy).. theres still so many left, my goal is to rehome 10-15 this year and I cannot choose which… so yeah, no fillers 😂
Agreed… houseplants are a first world “problem”
Overconsumption, is hard to avoid sadly, but we can be concious and try 😊
Theres a lot of people who are trying to be more mindful in the houseplant hobby these days
Regret: most Alocasia… its rehab, take out of the tent, root rot, rehab etc… I don’t want to permanently grow plants in tents, so after I rehabbed them last year I gave them away
I give most plants that I fell out of love with either to friends and family or to a nice lady in my area who helps people to start off with houseplants (most of my propagations also go to her).
Either that or if its a hard-to-get/finicky plant Ill try to sell it
Really need to learn to use the bin though and stop propagating without a goal in mind, that would be better for me personally
Have strted an experiment with my plowmanii in a smaller pot to just keep it stunted ... let's see how that goes :)
And yes, I often keep 'unwnated' plants around because they give me an opportunity to experiment without 'risking' anything or they help me make content like this video for example.
"Timelines are blurred" -- same brother, same. 😂
0:01 yes sounds familiar
I regret buying three plants (all Calatheas) simply because of the amount of time I’ve spent trying to keep them alive. And yet those bastards still give me regular crisped up leaves for no discernible reason.
Two of my plants made your list, but I understand the rationale and bear no grudges. Might have been different if either of them had been likened to a cabbage though.
I am trying to downsize, because I don’t need duplicates in my small apartment, so I sell propagations and plantlets to fellow student for the cost of materials (or a tiny bit more if it’s a more rare plant), so like 1-5€ ❤️
Good on you :) way to spread the joy 🙌
Hi! Sharoniae is a real pain to grow.. it needs sooooo much humidity to get the leaf unfold
The hosing down outside definitely has helped !! But what a nightmare indoors :D
Wonder with Magestic, would it stay smaller if you don’t use a mosspole but a bamboo stake instead to try to keep the leaves smaller
Oh noooo.. just realised i got one of those philodendron verde
RIP to my brandi ☠️
How about your philo lupinum? because it's the only plant I've ever regretted buying...LOL
Sometimes we have to or even just realize that the plants we buy are not to our taste 💚🤞💚
It died :D and I'm not bad about it :D
Sorry to break it to you but some of us followers need plants around us to survive.😁Plants and plant chores have a positive impact on mental health! I can't imagine a life without them.
I'm on the same page .... I didn't say one shouldn't grow plants?! ... just saying you can surround yourself with quality plants you actually like & that like you back instead of just aiming for sheer volume & short-term gratification by buying plants non-stop. Surely spending money on plants that then just die isn't good for ones mental health either ;)
Well, I'm probably guilty of buying plants just because I like buying and having plants😂
But, to be true, I don't really feel guilty about it. Plants make me happy and they bring a nice green jungle-like look into my house.🌿
I'm not much into collecting certain trendy species and rather like a wide variety of different shades of green and leaf-shapes. So my "collection" has one purpose and that is to make me happy😅
My daughter is always happy to take some plants of mine to her house and for self-control reasons I don't order plants online, until now this strategy works for me😂😅
As long as it makes you happy, go for GOLD!!!
I died at the "I'd have to replace my entire couch with crawling philodendron, that's not very useful when I'm trying to watch the telly at night is it"
Don't be sad about Paraiso verde, because seeing your videos, I think you wouldn't have liked it. I grow it in South Mexico outside (so hot, humid and plenty of space) and it needs plenty of space because it grows one leaf left, one leaf right and with quite a long petiole. hahaha
Jose buono is a much better option!!!!!
Transparent areas, in my experience with syngonium, are oedema--too much water killing the cells. Could it be that?
@@adam2802 yes, it looks like oedema 🤔 I tried to let them dry out a bit in between watering, but then they skip the transparent phase and get crispy edges right away 😅 Maybe, I did not find the right Balance of frequency and volume, yet. And Winter is not helpfull as well.
Anyway, thanks for your answer! I keep on trying 😉
I laughed out loud at "Hm... we're never going to be friends." I apparently can be very difficult to be friends with. :/
I regret my phil. painted lady. Bought it after some youtubers said it was better in real life than on screen but never really liked how it looks and it hates me as well
I never liked that one :D
I hate that I wasted money on plants that don’t do it for me. I get a bad feeling when I look at them but can’t get rid of them because it feels like a waste of money, so then I’m stuck caring for a plant that makes me feel bad. I need to be strong and give them away…
Now they are turning into a waste of money & a waste of time !! Get rid of them :P at least you have already learned your lesson :)
