I loved manacled, the whole way through I was obsessed with how the story unfolded, the writing, everything. The ending though? Not for me, it was a very realistic ending. I am an absolute sucker for either a happy ending or a tragic ending. This ending was like… the best of a bad situation and I wasn’t going with it tbh. Then I read the Auction. 😍😍OH MY GOD! Literally so so so good and the ending absolutely satisfied me, fit so well with the story, they are so believable and I LOVE it when Ginny and Pansy are both big characters (which they are). Amazing. Chefs kiss.
I do think the ending of Manacled was kind of hard to handle. It was wallowing for days after that. I didn't like what Draco had been "reduced to" if you will, but yeah, it was realistic. Unfortunately realism isn't everything I'm reading for. And yeah, the ending of Manacled was so great, but I also really liked Ginny's character in Manacled and the badassness that she did near the end. I really like when they do right by Ginny.
@@babybookworm2859yes, I felt like that in the beginning, too. Like he was reduced. And I would have loved to see him finding a new purpose. But on the other side, it's often shown how inhumanely much he has to cope with and has to shoulder during the war. I think, she wanted to give him space to breathe and to heal (for the two of them) and letting his daughter into his life and not focussing on H alone was a big thing for him. It meant going against his "Dragon-Personality", coping with his upbringing and the story of his parents. That's a lot of personal growth. I would have been happy with some sort of interest of his own, though, apart from his two loves of his life. But perhaps we could learn from it that healing emotionally and from trauma is already achievement enough and people don't have to achieve more on top to prove their worth.
Im just relieved you mentioned the disappearance of DM at the end hhhh .... indeed it's so good it gave me the DM redemption arc I always longed for.... I need to mention one fic that I finished recently and thought it is criminally underrated " the Phoenix potion" .... it was so good, heavy plot... draco Hermione romance and relationship are perfect .... seriously it's a hidden gem...
Point on Manacled - the timeline diverges from canon just before the halfblood prince - but the main difference appears when Draco kills Dumbledore earlier before Dumbledore can put all of the pieces into place for Harry to discover and destroy the horcruxes. I really love how this piece of literature (yeah, would 100% describe as literature, it’s so beautifully written) also explores the whole concept of ‘does love really win all’, and you can see how Harry’s stubbornness really only allowed him to succeed when Dumbledore was the puppeteer. Super dark. I also LOVE love love love that Ron was redeemed in some way. He was more sensible than Harry, but realistically so.
Wow I had no idea! I'm curious to see how different it will be, but I'll be nervous to read! I'll definitely buy though, I want to support that author any way I can
Thanks for the heads up! Probably best to download it while it's still up on AO3. As an aside, I found out about Manacled by going through a different authors' ( Diasterisms) bookmarks on AO3, . She wrote a fabulous Reylo fic called "Landscapes with a Blur of Conquerors". After a few years of being posted, she was contacted by a lit agent and got a three-book deal. It's a rewrite of "Landscapes" and had to take it down. If you can find it (probably out there somewhere, I'd highly recommend it as well.
This video is a great outlet for my Dramione spiral that started with Manacled and hasn’t slowed since…I just finished Bloody, Slutty, & Pathetic and it was amazing (heavy E, sxx). I’m excited to watch part 2! I think our taste might be similar enough because I DNFd Remain Nameless. I did love the Narcissa/Lucius characterizations by Lovesbitca8 so our tastes might diverge a bit there. I love the notes on Ron bashing and Patronus reveals, great metrics to rate things by! I did really enjoy the Politicians Wife, kind of like how I like messy indie movies. Hoping to get an idea of what to read next, I’m thinking of Green Light but still on the fence
My favorites are Banality of Love a Voldemort Wins AU where she uses Polyjuice to look like Mandy Brocklehurst and infiltrate the Ministry and Let the Dark In a No Voldemort AU where Hermione and Draco are both fighting in the Triwizard Tournament during their 6th year with him representing Drumstrang. I love these kind of AUs! They're written very in character with a subtle enough AU twist that puts them in interesting scenarios
Love and Other Historical Events is so fun im excited for you! It has that banter from batmobile with the fun hijinks, but a little lower stakes. Also the way you deliver all of this info is so satisfying you could totally start a dramione podcast lol
The best dramione fanfic in my humble opinion is Detraquee by Hystaracal. No other book consumed me more and made me feel like it was me falling in love and not the main character. It takes a profound skill as a writer. Only Everythursday/Sage's writing comes on pare with it! ( I didn't finish Parade of the sun by her as well, but i'll give it a try because her other works are amazing).
Oh my gosh YES I just left a comment recommending Detraquee as well!! This one is absolutely SINGULAR in just how brilliantly it is written- how close you are with the character - how much you fall in love with her and then with Draco along side her. It’s just gorgeous storytelling and like nothing else I’ve ever read.
I think I'm one of those rare Politicians Wife fans, but I really love it, it's my favourite of the bunch There is criticism, not gonna lie, I think it's even possible to imagine Draco being very talkative, we honestly don't know how he is around friends, but Hermione wouldn't be that quiet, she lets draco talk and push her around, she gives him the what for and gets violent, but I think she wouldn't miss the opportunity to talk back But the thing I like is that Hermiones character is slightly unhinged, she's horrible and selfish and I love it, my biggest complaint against most fanfics is that she gets smoothed into a kinda calm, healing presence or a damsel like creature, when in books she's very abrasive to the point that her best friends will avoid her, she's a pushy mad scientist type or a doomsday prepper in essence. In Manacled i was waiting the whole time for her to take charge and do something violent and clever, and in Mortifying Ordeal I think she's too whimsical. I suppose I support womens wrongs The whole fic is about Hermione having to face that despite her amazing potential, she's not going to be the next ministar of magic, because it's a popularity contest and she's never won one of those...well that's not true, she could but she'd need to sacrifice her moral compass Also I tend to like fic where everyone is in their mid life crisis, where life itself is an obstacle, so you don't need to invent external ones, the same author has a really good ron redemption fic and I really, really like a fic Coffee and Alcohol by Alternatively which is perfect midlife but fluffier drameone imho
Do you know "The Missing Sister"? I'm currently reading it. It's a retelling from book 1 on, H is Harrys sister (Snape and Lilly had a fling) and is sorted into Slytherin. So far, I really like it, especially since you also get the teacher's perspective on what's happening. That's a point I really like, because reading HP as a grown up, you often think WTF does Dumbledore allow to happen when he should be caring for these kids' welfare?! Not much smut going on so far, but they're still in their fourth year, so much relationship developing innocently so far, though there is foreshadowing that this is going to change. Blaise, Theo and Pansy are also so dear! And Snape as a secret Dad is also great, as well as Lupin, who is H's godfather. It's a nice read to decompress after emotionalky draining books like Manacled.
I've never heard of that one but it does sound really interesting! Thanks for the explanation, I will add it to the list! I like those kind of "retelling" ones and I totally agree, reading it now I'm like hey WHERE ARE THE ADULTS lol
I would also like to recommend Of General Incivility by attica and How Lady Vengeance Takes Her Tea by Olivie Blake for anyone interested in period settings or Jane Austen-esque stories. They're both very good and written well!
listen.... this one's a Commitment with a capital C. it's called "royal blood" and it is phenomenallll..... not much smut but the BEST plot ever read. amazing!
I’ve gone through an entire spiral. My favorites have been manacled, remain nameless (felt so organic for a mid-20s love story), the auction, the fallout, isolation (the entire DH Rewrite!), and draco malfoy and the mortifying ordeal of being in love. Legit have read 12 books in the last 4 weeks and it’s kinda become a problem 😂
DMATMOBIL is my all time favorite. Nothing comes close it's soooo fun and so believable. But it's definitely explicit what are you talking about 😂 there's like an entire chapter of smut. The tub jets??? The whipped cream???????
I do love Disappearance of Draco Malfoy too. The chapter with Ron in Azkaban was so good and so unexpected. And I like everyone's characterization in it.
You have HAVE have HAVE to read Détraqueé by Hystaracal!! I’m absolutely of the same opinion to you - it has to be believable to canon, I’m picky with characterizations and relationship development hurdles. I generally avoid any Hogwarts era fics because it just not believable to me and I don’t like reading about kids (this starts in 6th year but runs through the war and beyond). This story though. THIS STORY. It’s absolute LITERATURE. And this is CANON Draco and Hermione to a T. It is so believable and everyone is so three dimensional and real.
The length was intimidating at first but honestly I just wanted it to go on forever haha. The breadth and depth of this story is like none other I’ve read before and it’s hard to move on from 😅
Also recommend Lionheart to feel the magic of the original books from an entirely new perspective (AU where Lucius dies when Draco is young and how growing up without that influences might affect his path-it’s so good) Beginning and End by mightbewriting is another gorgeous Draco POV story - his redemption arc is great in this. Also want recommend Soft as it Began & Teach Me How to Forget & all one shots by pacificrimbaud (I also love One and Done by her - Love and Pther Historical Accidents is her most popular work and it’s extremely well written but the miscommunication drove me insane)
Measure of a Man !!! I was sobbing/laughing/happy or heartbroken during that book multiple times .. it is heavy and beautifull .. another one (I just finished) is Selfxconclusion (which is not as epic as Manacled) but to me has the best characterization of both Draco and Hermione I have read so far .. both of those books are full (and I mean sopping wet full) of psychological trauma and heavy healing so I would really advise to read through the tags and warnings before diving in :)
Thanks for the comment! I read measure of a man and I have a video about it, it wasn't my favorite. I haven't heard of selfxconclusion though, I'll look into it!
Hey! So I just found your video… I am extremely new to the fan fiction world and recently after re-reading the books and re-watching the movies, I really wanted to see a love story between Hermione and Draco, so my question is, what would be the recommendation for a first fan fiction reader? Like what’s your go to, if you have one? :) thank you in advance!

I actually liked The Auction better than Manacled. The Draco in Manacled is so one dimensional and has zero personality, I much prefer the portrayal of him in The Auction.
That's actually an interesting take, and when you mention it honestly I totally see where you're coming from. I actually am a huge sucker for "always loved her" so that aspect of the auction helped give draco more personality in my opinion and yeah, made him more three dimensional. In manacled no denying I kept expecting him to have orchestrated her being the one chosen (in part 2) because he always loved her. Alas. Wondering if that would have made his character more three dimensional though.
Finishing school is for learning manners. It's kind of an old thing. Women used to go, like back when they had governesses and it would fill in the gaps their governess didn't cover.
