This video is amazing. Since re-reading the series I’ve always had a problem with Draco's character arc. It didn’t feel fulfilling and it was practically all lost potential. He could have been one of the most interesting characters in the franchise but even Rowling herself messed him up by lowering him to just a bully who was raised wrong. It makes sense why in the fandom he is VERY popular and why there are so many fan works around him. Overall I love your idea of a redemption arc for Draco, keep up the good work!
I just finished reading my first ever fanfic ("The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy") and it was absolutely outstanding, and now I can't believe how JK did Malfoy dirty, he really deserved more! Hyped to watch this
i’m surprised this vid has so little views lol this is a great idea. tho i’ve always thought that harry should’ve been more effected by his use of sectumsempra and had jkr not completely villianized draco, then the br scene could’ve been the beginning of a redemption arc if snape hadn’t found them.
He could have really been one of the most interesting characters and kind of show the message that it's never too late to change (I mean if you've killed people you should still pay but you can always truly change and have regrets, like Kylo Ren did).Draco could have been a major fan favourite like Loki,Rowling could use it anyway she could, even with his own series.
I feel like I’ve read this fanfiction before almost exactly… it’s called The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy. (“A Deathly Hallows rewrite in which Draco accepts Dumbledore's offer to fake his death and go into hiding”) It’s been a long time since I read it but I feel like it was pretty good, and it hits a lot of notes from this video.
17:00 in the third movie during one of the DADA lessons when professor Lupin teaches them how to defend themselves against boggart all the Gryffindors stand in front with wands at the ready, while the Slytherins hide behind them, arms crossed over their chests, looking disgusted and "evil". They made everything they could so that Slytherin students looked "evil" in the most Disney villain way possible. During Garry's time at Hogwarts it looks like there isn't a single kid on Slytherin worth talking to to the point when I kinda formed a reflex - see a green tie, know that that's a bad guy.
@Coffeholic373 oh I 100% agree but also I think j.k could have written Draco having the balls to do that into the plot and it would have bettered the story and been great character development
Can’t believe I just found this but yes!!! Ever since I watched avatar and saw what they did to redeem zuko in season 3, I’ve felt like Malfoy should’ve gotten a very similar treatment in deathly hallows. I hope the hbo max series will take there own liberties and make malfoy a great character because he could easily be a top 2-3 character in Harry Potter
I like that many people compare Draco to Zuko mainly because i am dutch and they are voiced by the same dutch voice actor. Also the voice actor of Harry is Sokka and the voice of uncle Vernom is also the voice of uncle Iroh.
Draco’s redemption arc SHOULD have begun in The Goblet of Fire, when he warned the trio to get Hermoine to safety when the Death Eaters staged an attack at the Quidditch World Cup. We should have seen this entire incident from Draco’s point of view. The story should have shown us how uncomfortable Draco is at the way Muggle-borns are being terrorized. This is when Draco begins to question his family's teachings. It could have been an arc that would rival Zuko's. But alas! JK Rowling doesn't understand character development. 🙄
To be fair ATLA started in the same year book 6 got releashed. But yess Rowling does not understand character development. I have no intressed in watching the upcoming HBO Max show but if it will be close to the books then they will removed the tiny bit of depth the movies gave Draco. 🙄
This is a much more compelling ending and I feel like it fits with the theme of love and friendship instead of the “wee woo strong arm deus ex machina”
The fact that the last movie had a cut scene where draco runs back to hogwarts side when Harry reaveals himself to be alive. That was such a missed opertunity.
I have to say I agree with you on most of your ideas about Dracos redemption arc, And an end like this would be totally great. But we have to face that Rowling didn't like Draco, so she worte the end like she did and still he got a lil redemption somehow... And I think even with his storyline that Rowling gave him, he was a better person inside than Snape was. Otherwise he had treated Harry in a diffenrent way. Not just because he was Lilys son and he felt guilt about her death. Don't get me wrong, I do like Snape, but he never was a good person for me. He did alot of good things, but he also did some aweful things too.
THIS! Draco indeed said and did some awful things but he was an teenager who have grown into a racist household and was sorted into a racist hogwarts house among dozens of others teenagers who have grown into racist households; he didn't have much chances to do better or to grow out Lucius' influence. Snape otherwise was a whole ass adult who, while did good things, spent most of his days bullying children for no reason which is just insane
I think this is my favourite vid on this topic! Thank you for putting all of my thoughts into words. I strongly believed going into Deathly Hallows that Draco would have a redemption arc. I will always think that the books would have been better, stronger thematically (for all of the reasons that you gave) if he had. It will also forever bother me that NOT ONE SYLTHERIN STUDENT turned to the good side in the books. I hate what this implies about all of the ELEVEN YEAR-OLDS who are sorted into Slytherin. Come on Hogwarts, you can do better.
If you want to get in it for the LONG HAUL, I seriously recommend Draco Malfoy and the Mirror of Ecidyrue by starbrigid on ao3. 18-year-old Draco, after the war, travels back in time to his first year and gets to redo everything. What this video described about him working with the Golden Trio throughout the Deathly Hallows is pretty much exactly what happens! But it's a LONG fic. The author rewrote every single book from Draco's POV. The redemption is AMAZING!!
Try The disappearances of Draco Malfoy on AO3. Is Dramione, so if you don't like the ship you know going in. Is a great fic where you see him grow and change his views.
Snape was never redeemed. Snape is the result of how Rowling awkwardly tried to redeem anyone for the first time in her life ever. So she decided that she could excuse present bad deeds with love that happened in the past. She never redeemed Draco, because she does not really believe in character development:-D
And I mean it. Tell me ONE character in the whole series who has ACTUAL character arc. One who develops and changes. All I can think about is Dudley:-D Whose character arc is bonded to the fact he lost weight:-D
@@skadi6750 Rowling is so weird that she didn't want Draco with Hermione (in this case it makes sense), but she fits James with Lily and Ginny with Harry, hahaha just give harry a dam gentle girlfriend, the poor guy was never spoiled😂😂😂
This is your first video?! This was really insightful. I agree that Draco does not need to be like Zuko but maybe more like Anakin/Vader. He has done terrible things which makes it hard to fully redeem himself but I think close acquaintance after helping the golden trio would be good. Draco would have been a good character to show how death eaters or wizard blood purists could see the light. Andromenda did not fight in the war so she does not count. Regulus is not a prominent character. Draco is the best choice here to show how Slytherins can adapt and change.
great video with a lot of interesting points! I especially enjoyed your proposal of how and why Harry would win the elder wand’s loyalty in your rewrite pitch. I think it’s really interesting that you gave yourself the constraints you did for your rewrite and without liking him at all. Thanks for sharing this! If anyone is interested in a more sympathetic / fully realized Draco Malfoy type character I recommend rainbow rowell’s simon snow trilogy. I love the world building and interpersonal relationships in it and baz (the character in question) comes in third place for my favorite characters in the series.
I love this video, I remember reading the books while they were being published and with each one expecting she is gonna do something with Draco and his arc actually goes nowhere, I was so dissopointed and well as many other plot points in the series.
i don’t even know why i watched this when i have no interest in harry potter but i love this the ending you wrote about love being the most powerful magic made me emotional
First of all, nice re-write. Edit: One thing tho. Wouldn’t Lucius getting killed by Voldemort forfeit the Unbreakable vow? Because part of the agreement was that his family will remain safe. Is there a loophole because Draco no longer sees his father as family? Does Narcissa also need to die? Despite my shipping history (and this comment section) I think Draco could be good representation of a single father. (However if I’m going to”crazy shipper mode” I’m choosing Drarry-)
this is what it should have been !! and it provides the perfect opportunity for drarry to ensue which makes so much sense especially in this rewrite. draco deserved a better redemption and he easily becomes an s tier character if he had this instead of that rushed plot hole mess that jk rowling made
I love this idea, and really wish it could’ve come true. I think the only change I would make would be with the climax with the Elder wand. I agree that the “wrestling the wand out of Draco’s grimey mitts” is a lame pass off for the wand, but to me I don’t think the unbreakable bond would be enough for the wand ti pass over ownership. Partially because I feel an unbreakable bond is supposed to be an equal transaction, both wizards have to want it. so it'd be more like a truce than a win in the wand's eyes. Plus to be nitpickey, Dumbledore and Grindelwald had an unbreakable bond and that didn't cause any ownership transfers there either. I think a better and more clear transfer ship would be like the one deleted scene from Deathly Hollows, when Draco throws his spare wand to Harry before fighting Voldemort. If Draco willingly surrendered the Elder Wand to someone else, to someone they knew was stronger than him and had his complete trust in, that would be like a genuine surrender of arms to their former enemy now ally. I think that would be a more obvious transfer of the wand, and also show once and for all, to everyone to see- that Draco believes in Harry and no longer sees him as an enemy.
yes this!!! I came into the comments to find if anyone else had already written out my idea and this is exactly it. if draco had given the wand willingly to harry, that would have been a perfect climax to his arc, where he proves how much his friendship with harry has changed him.
I admit I've read my fair share of HP fanfic centering on Draco and have come across this concept before, but I really enjoyed your version of it, especially the part with the Elder Wand. Your version makes so much better thematic sense and wouldn't feel like a cheat the way it did in canon. Thank you for sharing your version, terrific! Speaking of fic, I read one Draco redemption fic that did a really good job of fleshing out the different people in Slytherin. It made a point to show how the traits valued by Slytherin don't automatically include wizard racism, or bully, or mean-spiritedness. I long for a more nuanced Slytherin portrayal than what was given in canon. I like that you pointed that out too, and that Draco doesn't need to be another morally ambiguous character, because that's not what the story needs him to be.
Before I continue watching the video, I must confess that the way JK changed Draco personality throughout the books was awful O.o In the two first books, Draco was a bully, but a smart wizard too and also a very good Quidditch player. But in the 3, 4 and 5 books he started to behave like a dumb, and he wasn't like that before. 6 book was HIS book, because the plot was about him. We all could see there that he was just like any other teenager. I swear that angry me a lot!! 😠 He wasn't treated as a true character, he just was there doing what JK needed: if she needed him being a bully, he was a bully. If she needed him being a smart guy, he was smart (the way he putted the Death Eaters into Hogwarts, for example). If she needed him being a great Quidditch player, just for making Harry looks hurried in the matchs, so he was a good player....
All the Slytherins are not treated as true characters. Blaise Zabinni Pansy Parkinson are very big exemples of that too besides Draco. And all because JK was like: BOE HOE I BASED THEM OF MY CHILDHOOD BULLIES. Some people praise her for it but come one this is one of the most pathetic things i have seen any writer doing. And i was tortured in school almost daily myself.
This was interesting listening. I am by no means a HP fan (and the despair of fully 2/3 of the people i know because of that!) BUT something like this, if i was told about it, would have increased the likelihood of my reading it... I enjoyed it, so thank you!
Rowling based him on her own bullies so that's why i think he simply didn't get a redemption arch even when her own story laid it out for him to be redeemed.
@@Vishakha_B897 Pretty much. Like the Malfoy we get doesn't redeem himself yet he somehow gets off scot free because his mom lied for Harry? It doesn't make sense logically, like i get not sending him to Azkaban for life due to him being under duress, but nothing? He got off scot free for no reason really.
With in my opinion is one of the most phatetic things she has done in the series. It is why i will never hate on the Slytherin kids Draco and Pansy got it the worst from Rowling. The fact that i was terrible bullied in school for years so mutch so that i have skipped school many times says something.
I agree with this--- i feel like i would've appreciated your proposed ending a lot better. I don't think Draco was freely able to be well, himself because of his family and their beliefs. This would be legit a good redemption arc.
This idea is genius! 🤩 I've had nearly the same thoughts and ideas some time ago but not in so much detail. The unbreakable vow between Harry and Draco is brilliant! And for me, the icing on the cake would be if Draco and Hermione would fall in love 😃 (and Ron gets Luna)
Really nice work coming up with this and knitting it all together, dude! 🙂 They should make a Malfoy series where he's a bit of a prick at first and gets up to all kinds of pricky shenanigans, but ultimately gets to fulfil a proper character arc like this in the end 🙂
Watching this vid three years after its release, but I love this rewrite. I wish it was the actual story. It actually reminds me a lot of a Drarry fic called Temptation on the Warfront.
@@purpleclaws202 creepy obsessions? What are you on about? I found this video long after it had come out and made a connection to a fic I read once. That’s all.
I truly belive that Draco deserved a redemption arc and that his childhood wasn't all pink and roses as everyone migth to belive. What i can read of him was all he ever wanted was his father aproval, he wanted his father to be proud of him and to love him the way his mother love him; i don't think Lucius was phisical abusive to Draco but i think he was emotional and mental abusive to him, making Draco feel that he always has to prove himself to him just to get a little of his afection and atention. I think Lucius used the dungeon in Malfoy manor to death eather porpuses, like he tried to mantain alive the "movement" of blood supremacy and the ideals of Voldemort, after all, Lucius activily collects dark artefacts and uses them so he was always searching a way to gain power, i'm not saying he uses them on Draco but, maybe he showed Draco what they did and what he and his "friends" do for the "good" of magical socity and boold supremacy? I think he and his mother are pretty close to each other, but since she doesn't show up much in the series and Lucius shows a little more because he is important to the plot, Draco may have to pass much time alone in the manor, just him, the servants and his thoughs. Of curse, Narcissa still love Draco very much, but she is cold so she doesn't show it so much, not like Molly did to her childs, and Narcissa maybe is very busy like Lucius, so she hasn't so much time to pass with Draco. I want to rewrite HP and tho this kind of redemption arc; in that fic too i want to make Ron jelaous of Draco and Hermione's friendshipp, because i think if they give it a chance they could be very good friends, but Ron think it migth be something else hapening betwen them. I think it would be hilarius after Ron come back he found out that Draco and Harry are together romantically because now they got a little chance speak truly and get to know more about each other, i mean that they alredy had a crush on one another but now that they're not figthing that crush become more and more profound, and they don't wanted to die without knowing how it would be to finally give up in that atraction they feel for the other. And the Ron is like: Ooooohhhhh 😳
Uuummm...no man.. While I agree that his character needed to be explored further.... I prefer Draco the way he is. Your version of events would bruise his ego a little too much.

Its time for us as a society to accept jk just isn't a good writer and Draco isn't the only example of this
@@manuelamartins4927 Very true!
Omg yes!!! This is great!! And I definitely like this better than the original!! Rlly good job!!
This was interesting listening. I am by no means a HP fan (and the despair of fully 2/3 of the people i know because of that!) BUT something like this, if i was told about it, would have increased the likelihood of my reading it... I enjoyed it, so thank you!
"a proper redemption arc like villains in other popular works do"
*shows Zuko*
Rowling based him on her own bullies so that's why i think he simply didn't get a redemption arch even when her own story laid it out for him to be redeemed.
She was projecting.
Your story is amazing!!!!
this feels like a drarry fanfic (in a good way ofc) AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!
this!
fr when he mentioned the unbreakable vow i was like oh... i think i know where this is going
Draco Malfoy was made out to be an blonde anti-villain like Johnny Lawrence character in Karate Kid (1984)
Disgusting not because it's gay but because of your creepy obsessions
@@purpleclaws202 creepy obsessions? What are you on about? I found this video long after it had come out and made a connection to a fic I read once. That’s all.
@@purpleclaws202not you saying reading fanfiction is a creepy obsession when your watching a Draco redemption video
hey this is a good idea, i really like your take !
I need a fic of this with Dramione sprinkled in ❤
YES!! This Draco would be perfect for Hermione! ❤😊
This was amazing
Can I just tell myself that Draco finally gets to cast a patroness
This really is a good idea! But I think JK is just too much of a shitty writer to even come up with an idea haha
this is a really great attempt to it
Luna and Cedric are not Gryffindors and they are heroic.????
You need to read the fanfiction Temptation on the Warfront. It's basically this, but also Harry and Draco fall in love.
Also, Draco should have been Hermione's love interest.
He's literally consistently racist towards her wtf do you mean?
They need to redeem him in the series.
If you mean the HBO series then not a chance. JK always hated his popularity so she will remain keep him a two dimensional bully.
He be a jelly jellybean
I love this!!
this is canon for me idc
0:28 THIS! ❤ SHOULD have been!
6:17 DRAMIONE!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😁
🐅🐆🐈🐈🐯🐱🐾😺 sorry I had to
WOW
Brilliant but one piece missing is Dramione. Ron and Hermione never made sense but Draco after his redemption, yes sir
i saw someone else reccommend the fic The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy
ABSOLUTELY!! ❤
Uuummm...no man.. While I agree that his character needed to be explored further.... I prefer Draco the way he is. Your version of events would bruise his ego a little too much.
