I don't care that the turn 2 kill isn't particularly consistent, the issue is that this particular Leyline can provide truly disgusting value for the single cost of it being a card in your hand, and can definitely enable a variety of kills on turn 3 or 4 with ridiculous ease. Yes, a well-timed removal slows it down, but on the other hand, it puts the opponent on the most famous "better have it or you don't get to play".
@@andrewwang7699 lol that's not a realistic option. but I like that your "easy" solution involves 1) changing format 2) having a dedicated sideboard 3) conceding g1 4) mulliganing for an answer on your starting hand. maybe, just maybe, something that requires that much effort to have a chance against, is a little too strong. and one removal spell will NOT save you. you need 2 or 3 to stand a chance against today's mono red, let alone when the leyline comes.
@@andrewwang7699 how exactly did boros convoke deal 19 damage on turn 2? because I have never seen it and I played hundreds of games against it. and to be perfectly honest, I don't think it is possible, I think you're mixing up turn 2 and turn 3. turn 2 and turn 3 are very very different things. and even if it were possible, how does that make it better? the current mono r deck kills on turn 3 EASILY (and even more easily with the leyline), it doesn't need to have a perfect hand. this deck is a million times faster, and much more reliable (in terms of pulling off fast wins.)

Standard outside of arena had been real fun! I’m in! But only modern and legacy played in 200 mile radius, if I don’t go to a neighbouring country that is. Cross my fingers that foundations can help remedy the lack of standard play around here.
Turn one or two kills usually aren't much to worry about, especially in best of three games, they've been around since Magic began, it's where Channel Fireball gets it's name from and why Blazing Shoal is banned in Modern
WUBBY TEASER AAAAAAH. THE PROMISED HOUR IS COMING. Also, hedge shredder looks like a really cool and strong ramp piece for decks that care about the graveyard and it has the potential for a silly half-combo deck that wants to chain absurb amounts of lands, lol.
Kinda reminds me of Sheoldred apocalypse and how that single card completely warped standard. I know the 2 are used differently but I leyline of Resonance will definitely have as big of a impact.
3:00 Oh yes, mulligan till turn 1 removal in any first game of the match. I like to lose to turn 1 tapped land or having 2 mana removal instead of 1 mana.
I think Toby Beastie Befriender should be highly considered. It makes the token strategies even better by giving them flying and making a 4/4 token that caretakers talent will love to copy for 1 mana
The trouble, I feel, with red aggro is already that it already leads to so many non-games where either they kill you before you did anything meaningful, or they fizzle out and don’t do anything meaningful before you win. This new card exacerbates the problem by making games even quicker when it’s in the opener or completely dead for your opponent when it isn’t.
That would be true if the deck wasn’t still so damn good without the landline combo in it. Red rush has always been a very strong strategy. Now there’s red rush plus a combo maybe.
@@petrri323 I don’t really think that most people would consider that the leyline turns red aggro into a “combo” deck in any meaningful sense: it has good synergy with the cards already there and its value to the deck is essentially constrained to one scenario (having it in the opening hand) but the game plan and deck construction with and without it probably aren’t much different. Honestly, it may not even improve the deck in general because the value in speeding up a win you were likely getting anyway may very well be overshadowed by how bad a draw it is later in the game. It’ll probably make those quick losses feel even more hopeless for your opponents, but whether you consider that an advantage or not probably depends on your personality;-)
Yea, I hate it bc getting leyline out isn't even a choice being made my your opponent. As long as you have it in your opening hand it's just out there automatically for free. Wow, so interactive! My opponent gets a powerful copy enchantment before I placed my first land. It's the most "I'm building this deck to do this 1 thing and completely ignoring everything my opponent does" thing ever in standard.
wholly appreciate you taking the time to point out the weaknesses of this new leyline Prof and team! For me the deck dilution alone is already sufficient to not want the leyline when rakdos aggro can already kill its opponent pretty effectively by turn 3 or turn 4 much much more consistently. Someone will record a video of them getting the nut draw on arena and it'll go viral but its just...not that good a play.
Turn 1 Duress Behbeh!!!! But seriously thanks prof. I hope to play a standard game against you sometime! I did a spin on Saffron Olive's 8 rack deck & also am a big fan of my Azorius Control lol. Will be building Delirium in duskmourn. I love a few of the interactions they're giving us lol
14:22 An Elspeth's Smite will also do the job quite nicely. Anyways, good to hear you talking about Standard! I've loved it for a few months now, and seeing more people play it has been so nice.
Oh! I would love to have that stigma lasher in my Mortarpod BR - Sac deck. Stick it to the life gain decks (For when I'm not playing my own life gain deck) :-D I never plan to attack with something like Screaming Nemesis or Stigma Lasher. As long as the sac effect allows the creature to deal the damage we get the effect without having to attack. Okay I see your going the stuffy doll route with the Screaming Nemesis.
Standard has devolved into Yugioh matches, where your opening hand and who goes first determines who wins. Small creatures and spells simply generate way too much value due to the power creep of sets like Bloomburrow and Duskmourn. Its absurd that your opponent can literally burn you for half your life for removing their threats and punishing them for stacking 3+ card effects on one creature so quickly.
i think the wandering rescuer and clockwork percussionist deserve mentions for how well they slot into convoke (percussionist being a perfect target for gleeful demolition and the wandering rescuer being another great convoke threat)
Red decks are definitely getting a lot of love in Duskmourn. However, I think I'm most excited about the Green and White Survival options that are going to have great synergy with the Mount cards from OTJ and then probably also get another boost in value with the Death Race set next year. Kona is right at the top of my most wanted list for this set.
Aggro was a bit slow, to be honest, so it should get a buff. I think a 1 red mana goblin with 3/3, Prowess, Menace, Haste, Trample, Ward 2 would be a good start. It's great that they don't want to give proper dual lands because using shitty tap lands means you can play a tap land when the opponent goes first and that's the only card you have to play.
Send that idea to WOTC: They will set it at mythical rarity and add another "Add a treasure when doing anything" to match hits abilities with its rarity😊
This has been my first time playing Standard and I actually won my store championship yesterday! Got my foil Urzas Saga and had a lot of fun, Rakdos Lizards FTW! 😊
This is what happens when they design cards straight for commander. The entire rest of the game crumbles because The entire rest of the game can’t handle cards balanced for a 120 life, four player format. Rip 60 card. This game is becoming YuGiOh. Edit: WHY ARE THEY MAKING RAKDOS AGGRO UNBEATABLE AGAIN?????
Been thinking of getting back into standard now that I've got time when my LGS is doing standard nights now and am beyond excited for some of the red cards coming in this set. Screaming Nemesis looks very fun, and the damage doubler isn't too shabby either imo (even if a little jank). I think the monsters and environments in Duskmourne knock it out of the park aesthetically too as much as I don't love the 80s people and TVs. Very mixed feelings on it, definitely not above Bloomburrow for me, but it's highs seem a lot more fun than OTJ and MKM for sure.
Leyline is a cool card idea when the effect is only decent but when its just outright a powerful effect even without being a leyline, we get busted combos that break the game immediately. 😂
I think Grievous Wound should get a mention with slasher and bloodletter. It takes a turn longer to end the game but serves as a nice back up spell if the zombie is stunned or exiled. Also, having bloodletter on the battlefield a turn prior allows you to perform the same mechanic if the opponent cant block flying
I haven't finished the video, but while you were talking about the Survivor mechanic of Kona, made me randomly realize, Survivor is going to make those turn 1 Authority of the Consuls WAY less useful, or at very least, be less one sided.(speaking on brawl, the one thing I can regularly play... man I miss commander, but time and money are things I am both low on x_x)
Tuck in tight everybody, combo winter is coming. With Citanul Stalwart you can actually pull off a turn 3 Atraxa - Citanul on 1, Subterranean Schooner on 2, on 3 tap Schooner for mana in artifact form with the Stalwart and that's the 4 mana for Kona. Crew Schooner now (remember, it doesn't need to be untapped to crew) and have fun.
I'm feeling this red leyline, though it CAN, there are plenty of matches that it will not get to do the thing. Hence it will be ‘balanced’. Should this have been printed into Standard? No. Will the designers pay attention and be careful with future sets for 3 years? Hopefully but probably not. Will this be a clear and must build deck? I don’t think so (I hope it isn’t). [I do hope Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief doesn’t get powered up even harder with the lightest of splashes for to have an additional Resonance]
yeah im not particularly concerned about the new leyline and the t2 combo, but i do expect to see it a lot in Arena Bo1. im hoping that with manifest dread being a theme there'll be enough support for a deck themed around Yarus and face-down card. probably not the strongest but would definitely be fun
I haven't been a standard player for quite a while, but when I saw the combo of Rollercrusher ride and Screaming Nemesis? Oh boy, get that out and use Obliterating Bolt on your Nemesis to hit your opponent for 16? At the low cost of Delerium? Sure thing.
Standard is extremely fun right now, my fnm had 10 people playing a tournament last week and I got second! Before this I'd had only played commander but profs vid on store championship and the recent Bloomburrow set was the final push for me to play!
One thing I love so much about MTG is that it appeals so much to my childish soul at times. Normally I'm more of a combo control player, and then comes Valgavoth. And my inner child is like: OMG it's an Elder Demon!!! He has 9/9!!! Look at the mana cost!!! This card must be invincible!!! :D
There is this card in the commander set that a person at my lgs feels like it is underworld breach busted, the 3 drop creature that deals damage for the reduced mana cost of cards, bug beans seems stupid strong with murktide dealing usually 3+ damage on cast. Turns force of will into 5 damage, etc.
I play a gruul prowess heartfire deck and its cool when you get it to pop off but with the cut down go for the throat, shock, lightning strike and helix it can be challenging. I dont think its ban worthy
Okay so this Leyline may be rough for some red decks in standard, but if you could keep talking it down I could use a playset for legacy and it'd be cool if they weren't very expensive... I've been working on a turn 1 combo deck forever, and it has always been kind of jank and hard to pull off, on inception I needed the perfect 7 card god hand, Cacophony Scamp lowering the CMC of my creature to 1 and changing the color to red reduced the cards I had to have to 5, Volcanic Salvo from M21 gave me a high enough CMC with Blazing Shoal that without something to double up the damage I could hit with 20 from a Pact of the Titan token straight up, the bolt MDFCs cut the colorless cards in my deck down to 6 (only a playset of Lotus Petals and 2 Inkmoth Nexus remain) which is important for both Blazing Shoal itself and Fury of the Horde... This Leyline might just give me enough wiggle room along with the reduced colorless cards to main deck the 4 Pact of Negation in the sideboard that were there for decks that could disrupt my turn 1 with something other than a bolt (Brute Force and Rubblebelt Maaka had me covered there) because you're right the blowing the full combo and running in to removal is the worst time.
I live in NYC, and there is only 1 premium store and they wanted standard only Saturday at 10am-2pm but people tried a month but we only had at most was 6. Then after a few weeks they stopped standard. They tried it again but I didn't participate most likely it will be on Saturday morning. I won't try again unless I can find out there are people with close to 8. Its a waste of my time. I asked on Discord to see if there is anything with a good amount of standard and hopefully there will be a good amount of people and I'll join if they don't jack up the price for standard if they go back to standard. Because there was a place in Manhattan and they had 22 people and I came in 3rd place. Problem was that it cost $20 to participate in standard I got $25 store credit. I wasn't thrilled with the reward. So I'll ask around if not I'll just do commander for a while until standard is going good.
Welp, I think that leyline pumps the damage output of the mouse/prowess type decks in Alchemy ridiculously, which are already top of the metagame. Probably will push out my already tier 3 Dino Gruul from the metagame by forcing us to play instant speed removal that doesn’t scale well in the late game :( . Screaming Nemesis on the other hand seems like it could be a hard counter to the bat decks, which is supposed to counter those decks. Hopefully some new cards will help to counter them now, or else it’ll be mouse/prowess or bust
would love to go down and play std at my local store! ... but since wizards/ pandemic killed the paper format, we can't get more then 3 people to show up😞
I actually love that they added Screaming nemisis because of the meta shift. I have been going against a lot of oversaturated healing decks, and having to deal 70 damage in a standard game to defeat an opponent who is clearly losing the game in the long run is quite annoying.
I live in metro area of the 7th largest city in the US. I'm lucky if a MTG shop does standard once a month. I'll just be scourged by this on arena bo3 I guess.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Screaming Nemesis gets blocked by a Deathtouch wouldn't it's trigger go on the stack and then it would be put in the graveyard as a state-based action before that trigger resolves so it can't deal damage to anything?
I'm not sure what to build for standard, but I pulled 4 Grievous Wounds, 2 Konas, and 2 Hedge Shredders, so I feel like the universe is saying Golgari something.
Mono red really screws with mono green, kinda sucks when you have no cheap removal in green that does not require you to already have a board so you die in turn 2 or 3 most of the time.

Survivor serms like it'd be really easy to put on more cards going forward.
I play a gruul prowess heartfire deck and its cool when you get it to pop off but with the cut down go for the throat, shock, lightning strike and helix it can be challenging. I dont think its ban worthy
I'm excited for the Leyline because it'll make my Narset Enlightened Exile Prowess deck better than it has any right to be.
the new haircut looks STUNNING btw!
Damn.. that sucks.. blumburrow was so good.
Wait what I’m so glad I was baited, awesome🎉
Great, as if I wasn't already losing enough matches against red aggro and mono black decks.
Spell pierce
screaming nemesis is insane, I love it
I just started playing, I like commander, what should I buy to start out with
it sounds pretty cool. I cant wait to play with this leyline
Thanks for this.
I’m pretty hyped for DuskMourn!!
would love to go down and play std at my local store! ... but since wizards/ pandemic killed the paper format, we can't get more then 3 people to show up😞
Did you use an old school RuneScape hit splat?! That’s awesome 12:10
i don't want to play standard, but i like that i really wanted to make an atraxa deck during ONE and i still want to make it (if i had infinite money)
This set has my Solidarity deck FEASTING, and I'm super interested in brewing for Pioneer with it.
Love the RuneScape hitsplats
Me - *see's unstoppable slasher*
Also Me in Danny Devito's voice "so anyway, I started slashing...."
I actually love that they added Screaming nemisis because of the meta shift. I have been going against a lot of oversaturated healing decks, and having to deal 70 damage in a standard game to defeat an opponent who is clearly losing the game in the long run is quite annoying.
ah Prof, I was planning to skip Duskmorn... looks like I'm going to get me some DSK too 🤣
I live in metro area of the 7th largest city in the US.
I'm lucky if a MTG shop does standard once a month.
I'll just be scourged by this on arena bo3 I guess.
I love how they used an OSRS hitsplat 12:39
I'm 100% here for the Bean Overlord archetype decks
Just opened my first duskmourn pack and got an unstoppable slasher
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Screaming Nemesis gets blocked by a Deathtouch wouldn't it's trigger go on the stack and then it would be put in the graveyard as a state-based action before that trigger resolves so it can't deal damage to anything?
I appreciate the Persona reference, even if the Professor never will...
I'm not sure what to build for standard, but I pulled 4 Grievous Wounds, 2 Konas, and 2 Hedge Shredders, so I feel like the universe is saying Golgari something.
Brian, you're absolutely right. They need to stop this.
Prof, what about fear of missing out? I think this card will see play in several formats
Play Standard Bo1 with 1 mana removal, Green in shambles rn
Mono red really screws with mono green, kinda sucks when you have no cheap removal in green that does not require you to already have a board so you die in turn 2 or 3 most of the time.
1:56 well that first one is just the exact same as the Leyline of the Guildpact turn 2 kill but with Gaeas Might or whatever its called
I'm even more excited to play this set/format
