Living off Grid in the High Desert, Taos, New Mexico

    Jeanne eKo GyPsy is a traveler, and after a lifetime on the road, she decides to lay roots. But not so much in a traditional way.
    Jeanne bought a cheap block of land in the high desert sage bush country of Two Peaks, just out of Taos, New Mexico. All houses in this area are off the grid, meaning people rely on alternative energy sources such as solar and wind.
    The desert dwellers of Two Peaks are known as Sage Monkeys by the townsfolk. Some wear it with pride, some see it as derogatory.

      Don't let its beauty deceive you. The Eagles song Hotel California and House of the Rising Sun may as well be represented by this hell hole of a state.... If you don't end up getting killed by violent gangs or individual violent criminals, or the ease of ending up addicted to drugs and possibly ODing from how prevalent they are, then the heat of the desert may just as well do it to ya. And that's even if you somehow miraculously have enough income to be able to live anywhere here... So basically if you're disabled with bare minimum income per month (about $1000) and end up being forced to have to find someplace to live in a short amount of time or face legal trouble, you're pretty much fucked outta luck.... Moving within the state once you've already been living here is the most expensive and miserable situation to have to experience.... You could rhetorically build a pretty decent sized city and fill it with all the homeless people in this state, and that city would probably become juat as heavily populated, if not more, than even Albuquerque. And suicides are one of the leading causes of death in the state... Not hard to understand why..... I guess poetically, you could say that we have indeed become captivated by the Land of Entrapment.....

    She's a smart lady, I can tell. I hope she gets it finished and comfortable. She's never lived anywhere more than 5mo. Wow. Ramblin' bone. I relate, I'm that way. I'd rather live there than in the city. I don't expect most of you to understand... although I could find a prettier remote place, for even that is too crowded for me.

      @@josephdupont not sure what you mean with evaporating cooling mate. I do use a swamp cooler lol; however our climate here isn't to bad, winters get cold, I've been as low as 20 below ferinhieght for a couple of days one winter but average temperatures in the winter are usually in the teens. Summers are great, we get a couple of weeks that are hot but average temperatures in the summer are 80's; however we always get a breeze in the afternoon and it really helps to cool things off. There is also a 30 to 40 degree temperature change between night and day here so if it's 90 in the day we drop to 50 and 60 at night. I'm at 4,500 feet elevation. I would be interested in hearing about evaporation cooling.

      Yes, The year before I move here it got down to 45 below, but that was a record. last winter It got down to 12 below with 2-1/2foot snow. Another thing to think about is transportation, you will need a good 4x4 vehicle and you may still get stuck sometimes, I live about 1.2 miles down a very well maintained county road and when it rains or snows heavy you may not get out for a couple of day's without 4 wheel drive.

      I never killed a goat. I wonder if there's specific way to do that. What if I put a plastic bag over it's head and kill it that way. But in all seriousness I can't kill an animal. I'd start crying and feeling vary vary guilty about it. It would take months for me to get the mental, emotional and spiritual shock out of my system. I understand that goats are ideal animals for many reasons. There has to be something else to replace the meat and kill thing. Maybe I could have someone do that stuff for me, I don't know. I think I have to go into deliberation about this. I'm sure that someone reading this is laughing at me right now, and thinks I'm a dummy... It's not my fault!!! I'm not a know it all and I never did off the grid stuff. I shouldn't of responded to this but it's too late I already opened my big dumb mouth. I think I'm to self conscious. 3 goats. Well, I think according to logic, one goat should be male and the other female so they can have babies thus I'd have more milk and meat. Do you just drink the milk or does it have to be boiled or something first? I just got an insight. I think I could purchase the most powerful shotgun take shooting lessons and use it to blow the goats brains out. The death would be instant. Yes? I think that's a good first step forward. The other things I'd have to figure out is how to cut the thing up and what are edible parts and what parts of the goat are not good for consumption.
      There's so much to learn about all this.

      Medmann48, the summers are usually a dry heat, in the 80's and 90's depending on your elevation. The cold winters are the brutal part, when temperatures can easily plummet below zero with serious windchill to lower that even further.

    Hello. I have been thinking of buying property in Toas county. I am from Ohio and unfamiliar with the state. How is the county with permits and zoning? I am interested in setting up a Yurt. Is this legal? Will I have to deal with the county pushing me off my property?

      I don't lie. I have no idea what your agenda is but we have been traveling like this for over 700,000 miles over the course of 21 years. Look at the pictures. As for the $20 a day - how else can I say it? YES YOU can travel BY YOURSELF for $20 day but OBVIOUSLY just like renting a house you can do MORE if there are two of you or three or more. If you are solo you drive less, eat less, but spend about the same on lodging (usually nothing). When TWO people travel the gas stays the same but now we may pay for a camping spot once a week rather than once a month and obviously eat double so that is why it is always figured as PER PERSON.

    I'm looking to move off grid in Az. I just got back from a road trip to check out property in Golden Valley and it was a major let down as the sky has a thick haze. I assume pollution from generators and the gas power plant down there so thats out. I need a property now so if anyone has any info please share asap. 3000' elevation would be PERFECT but 5k may be the thing. I have a dozen fruit trees I started in buckets ready to go in the ground.

    • @johnarizona3820

      Man it would depend on the property cost, expenditures on building your structure, water haul trailer and fill up costs, solar panels and batteries plus charge controller and ac inverter or all dc appliances , fridge, ac/heat, food. I'm doing it on less so I suppose it comes down to determination.

      Rory Smith west rim rd. area

    • @JuliaB1955
      @JuliaB1955 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, no, it's not. From the Town of Taos, Paseo del Pueblo Sur (the main road), continue north for several miles, past the Taos PO and the El Prado PO and make a left at the blinking light onto Highway 64 West. Continue the 7 miles to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, continue over bridge and for less than a mile. Make a left near the big water tank (the well) at the sign on your left that says West Rim Road. Backtracking: continue at 45 mph after you get off the bridge so you don't miss the turn. If you've turned in the correct place, you'll be going over a cattle guard on the road. Bear right onto the dirt road. The road is known unofficially as Sheepherder Road if you're using the weather app from I forget which TV station in ABQ. Ugh--the other name, Spanish, of course, begins with an "M," escapes me at the moment. Good luck going 4 miles even in a fancy vehicle. And that is MAYBE as far as any type of deliveryperson--never FedEx or UPS or water or mail but maybe Ace or Rio Grande Propane--will go. Nothing else. If you don't have a p.u. truck or a trailer, forget paying the initial well fee of several hundred dollars. Might as well load up your SUV and go into town, past Smith's, etc., and get your 25 cents/gallon decent water (no fluoride in the muni water in Taos; one good thing). And which town you "kind of live on on the mesa" depends on your unit, block, and lot. Getting my driver's license renewed was a total bitch. Had to call lawyers I worked with at the NM Legis Council Service for advice. But the turn on West Rim Road is the Two Peaks entrance, unofficially. You have to buy the land at a county auction, held in August. Not sure they've had one since 2014 or 2015. I so loathe it here. Went broke taking care of my late, great brother w/Down syndrome. I DO work, but as a freelance editor (since we live in the land of subliteracy), and twice I had to go to two different statehouses and test (AND BEAT OUT EVERYONE) for a job as a session (temp) editor for the respective state's legislative councils. Quite a hardship and double payments. Had to go as far as Austin the second time. After the first time away, when I returned after four months, I'd found that a sweet lost soul I would run into sometimes had been brutally--and I mean painfully brutally--murdered. Not the first murder, either, and recently a nearby maniac beat up his "wife," shaved his daughter's head, and hurt the dog. They are all gone, thank God. Many strays, neglected animals. Hell does exist, and it's in little Mexico, the most monocultural and prejudiced and backward (after Miss.) state in the Union. Wait for me, Charleston, SC. Don't let me die here.

    I have a hundred year old 12 foot well in my house. It is not potable so we have to haul drinking water. We conserve on water for washing because the well tends to go dry. I is amazing to learn how much water you don't need.

    • @richardbellsr2345
      @richardbellsr2345 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can show you how to make your well deeper by hand, you can go a hundred feet if you set this rig up right, I did my own on my property, I have an underground spring, I hit water at four feet took it down to 15 feet and the water is great, very cold and clean, I can pump that well all day long! When I set out to do this I didn't know how deep the water was, so I bought a hand auger for 78 dollars from sears, then I went to Home Depot and had them cut me some heavy duty 1 inch pipes into 30 inch sections and had them thread the piping which was free to thread it for connectors to connect the pipes as I needed them! I bought 40 feet of piping to start and figured if the water was deeper than forty feet I would go back and get more piping! So I dug down with the auger until I has a foot sticking out of the ground, used an adapter that connected my one inch pipe to five eights on the auger, I just added pipe as I got deeper, the only thing is once you fill auger with dirt you have to pull it out then put it back in he hole and dig again! Two guys as the more pipe you add the heavier it gets when you pull it out! If you have to go pretty deep I would set up a hoist with a pulley system to pull it back up swing it over knock the dirt out and drop it back in the hole! Also there are ways to make your water safe to drink, running it through sand and charcoal like they use in fish tanks an a black light to kill any bacteria! If you want some picture of the rig I made to drill the well so you can get the right stuff let me know!

    I'm preparing to make a transition to this area. I am currently offgrid in South Carolina. But the liberal local government and fancy pants carpet baggers from up north make it very difficult to do this here. Cant even install a septic tank without 3 different pre inspections. Soil test, compaction test, and location in accordance with the water table. Then after paying nearly 5k to have a tank installed then you have to have the county come out again to tell you if you can connect to it. They wont let us build privys anymore even if it is out in the woods, and they also are cracking down on rain water catches. People in the suburbs dont like the sounds of wind generators, so they got them banned. So its only a matter of time til a county code enforcer will threaten me with a fine to take down my turbine. I am also paying over 800 dollars a year for taxes on 2.5 acres. Which I'm paying 29k for. Cant wait to get out to the desert! 🏜 I dont want or need some chumps sticking their nose in my business when I pay my taxes and keep to myself. Its crazy.
