I live in London on a salary of over three grand with two children and it’s a struggle, every day I wish I could come back to Jamaica, but I would have to restart and I have no money to do that so I am just roughing it out. But living in England has been the most depressing 17years of my life! It is really getting to me, now that the kids are a bit older I am starting my transition back. Hope my mental health don’t deteriorate any further.

Many people overseas are in the same predicament as you, and would repatriate in a heartbeat if they had the means to do so. You just have to try to save as much as possible and plan to return permanently to retire- that's what most expats hope to do!

I hear you loud and clear. I was born in the UK and moved to JA for my 50th birthday in 2012. I love Jamaica the land of my parents birth. I stayed the course of Jamaican life for over ten years with all it's ups and downs especially financially. I returned to the UK for my 60th birthday recently. The struggle is real wherever. Although it seems like glitter in the UK, the real quality of life is in JA for me. Jamaica is my golden island. I'm happy that you decided to stay in Jamaica, land of our forefathers.

Most people who return to the island permanently forget to factor in the additional expenses to travel back and forth frequently due to the deep ties that still exists overseas. Like you mentioned, medical reasons for oneself, also if there are family emergencies that can also cause frequent and unplanned travel expenses. People have to save a lot of funds and consider these issues when they make such a big decision to uproot their lives abroad.

You are doing the right thing staying in Jamaica at this time. The economy is going to get better and there seems to be a blitz on getting investors to invest in Jamaica. I am looking especially at Kingston Harbour where it will become a hub much like Singapore, and where Jamaicans will soon become economically well off/wealthy. Jamaica is only 60 years old and people are comparing it to countries which are hundreds of years old and used the hands of slaves to build their economies ....to this day... using our nurses and teachers. And many of these countries are racist places where there is no love for blacks and some places where blacks can never go during the day without being shot to death.
Crime is in Jamaica and no one wants that, but even Jamaicans living in foreign lands where mass murders are committed daily, seem to turn a blind eye and would rather talk about the criminality in Ja. They never talk about mass murders in kindergarten, junior schools, colleges, churches, malls, theaters, night clubs, supermarkets, medical facilities, just to name a few; yet people are saying how great things are abroad and how bad Jamaica is.
As someone who has lived most of my life in at least three 'industrialized' countries, I can say emphatically that the material things that we crave really do not matter. What matters is peace of mind, joy in one's heart, caring people to count on, loud roaring laughter with friends and family, beautiful sunshine, delicious food, fresh organic fruits and vegetables straight from the garden, a great night's rest, love of friends and family, and to love and worship the Lord.
I have seen firsthand how sad and unhappy many people who have money and material things in abundance are. Money can give us "stuff" but it cannot give us true happiness.
Please stay in Jamaica and live. You cannot be hungry in Jamaica because there is ALWAYS a neighbor or friend who will share with you from their field or garden; this doesn't happen abroad - no one cares! If you say good morning people look at you funny as if you are an alien from out of space. And don't even try to smile and make small talk with anyone because that would make you look 'fool fool" in their eyes.
People in Jamaica care and will keep in touch. I have seen numerous cases where people die in their own homes for months upon months in these foreign lands and no one knew because they never cared to call to even say hello. I have seen cases where people get sick and even retire, and after they left no one even called to say hello. For the ones that I called and texted they are shocked to know that I remembered them; that's a Jamaican for you!

Do you think that the younger generation in JA seem motivated to stay and build up the country or are they "foreign-minded" and yearn for the chance to immigrate? Unlike the previous generations, they don't seem interested in farming/agriculture which fuels the economy. How can the country prosper if the younger population has no desire to remain and contribute to it's growth?

I totally agree with you. After spending considerable time in Jamaica and experiencing the highs & lows, the reality hits when you’re back in the UK and experience how mentally depressing it is! Literally to the point of no get up and go in the mornings. People are now woke and are choosing quality of life although many Jamaicans in Jamaica would not agree with us.
    Keep up the good work!

Sis it rains all the time in the islands. Have you ever thought about doing rain/ calming videos for your TH-cam channel? There’s tons of beaches in Jamaica you can do calming beach sound as well with relaxing reggae music or anything that soothes the mind & body. You can also do customer service online for instacart. As a TH-camr with a great following you can expand your brand. You just need the right avenues & a bit more motivation.
Sorry if I bore you with my suggestions but just incase 😂
Wishing you nothing but the best. Thanks for sharing.

Why not look into private tutoring in jamaica?
U have to look at the cost of flying to UK, cost of living there, most importantly, leaving Outlaw! Jamaica is paradise & so much u can find to do there. Look at importing food etc from UK or US to sell to vendors!
    Crazy & confusing!
Jamaica is the best...no cold, heating, rain, locked in doors, no beautiful sunshine & beautiful mother nature!
    Good luck!

Good honest sharing. I live in London but is always considering what life would be like living in Jamaica. I have friends and families in Jamaica that would love moving to London because they automatically think life would be far greater economically but they don't realise that in reality all they may end up doing is working to survive ie paying bills and trying to maintain a basic level of life but without the benefits of sunshine, fresher air, lovely food, beaches and living their life at a more relaxed easygoing pace, etc. There was a time when moving from Jamaica to the UK may have been more viable economically but things have changed especially since covid 19. Prices are rising rapidly in the stores, fuel debts, priority debts and the cost of living. Many large companies have closed for business and the focus has shifted to the on-line industry. Despite the rise in prices the majority of UK employees are still being paid minimum wages which keep them in a poverty trap. The need to obtain groceries from a food banks is fast becoming the norm in the UK. Many African/Caribbean people are leaving the UK to return to their country of origin as the door of opportunity is fast closing in the UK.

I appreciate you being frank and honest. I concur, the struggle is real for us expats in 🇯🇲. Some of the expats in my group have made the difficult decision to return to the UK in order to secure employment as the pay and opportunities can be challenging. Some, like yourself have set up a business and others have opted to rent a section of their home to generate income. I am relieved you have decided to stay here and soldier on as the benefits ought weight the risks. You and Outlaw are a brand and will, in time, reap your rewards. Until then stay positive, stay well and enjoy life to the max. Xx

I homeschool my kids but I also have private online tutors for them, two live in th U.K. one lives abroad, maybe that is something you could look into doing? Not cambly etc but your own, I’m sure you would get a good number of clients that way you wouldn’t need to come back to the U.K. You are right regarding the cost of living, things will be hard wherever you are. • @suzyhur8161
      @suzyhur8161 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes- usually it is health and financial factors that is the issue for most who decide if they should return to JA. Word to the wise- those who decide to live in JA should have their power of attorney in place in case of emergency and they can't speak for themselves. Too many times their next of kin is still living abroad and can't make it back in time to make life and death decisions on their behalf and there are disagreements among family members. Even young healthy people should do this especially with the notorious road accidents that occur there. Good luck!

Island life is a big adjustment from the industrialized world and unless you're ready to retire, it is very difficult to maintain the same lifestyle that you are used to abroad. It's a catch 22- on the one hand you have to accept that it's a simpler life and weigh it against your happiness. That's why you'll notice most young people just return to visit, however when they're out of funds they hurry back abroad to earn good wages. I respect your honesty!

TBH, I don’t think the idea to return to the UK for 3-4months at a time is a bad idea. When times are hard you have to find ways to leverage what you have; you’re an educated professional teacher, in the UK you could do all sorts with that experience. Don’t let anything or anyone hold you back from exploring ideas to optimise your financial status. Keep it kerching!💯

It's refreshing to hear someone admit to being comfortable and happy living abroad! People like to bite the hand that feed them and will say they want to go back to the island to live but don't want to give up their comforts! They also have to seriously consider medical care because in an emergency there is no instant ambulance service and high tech ER care. They need to be sure of what they're giving up especially if they have ongoing health issues!

Sometimes things don't work out the way we want and we have to return and it turns out to be a good choice. Outlaw should marry you it creates a sense of security you have so many plans and ideas l am sure

You're right- there is no shame in giving it a try then deciding it's not for you. Miss Lou lived her final years in Canada so she could get excellent medical care although she loved Jamaica. It's a personal decision based on what's best for each individual.
