They could fix those "achievement" moons list without even changing a single thing about it. Just make Toadette your traveling companion and that's it. You'd find her stranded somewhere at the start of the game (cascade kingdom, maybe), save her, and she'd hop aboard your ship and there you go, you'd have this list of little things and goals to strive for, *while* playing through the story for the first time. Simple, really.
Here’s my idea of how to make achievements in Mario odyssey more fun. Just have Toadette appear in all the kingdoms, with 5-15 challenges depending on the level. These challenges could be specific to the kingdom they’re in, which would make some really interesting challenges. It would also mean you spend less time all at once collecting moons, since there would only be a few in each kingdom. Obviously for kingdoms like cascade, cap, ruined, cloud, and lost, toadette would just appear after the main story. This could create some harder post game challenges as well.
Having worked on games before, one thing you either failed to notice or to mention and I thought was really cool is that mushroom kingdom is very clearly the designer level. By that i mean, whenever anything was added to the game, designers went to the mushroom kingdom to see if it felt right, if there were bugs, and to fine tune it with other mechanics. You can see that by the small details like the different biomes basically being micro cosmos of whole kingdoms. Using the lake as an example, you get Dory floating, so they could change the model and how it looked on the water, you have the booster flowers so they could test speed and responsiveness, you have water where they test floatiness, swimming, drowning and if the booster flowers actually let's you walk on water. You have the jumpy mushroom, where they could time how high it goes, and if the wall feels jumpable with the boost. These are the examples that come to mind without the game open And this is everywhere, not just that area. I think this is awesome because it means the dev level (usually dead weight) has turned into a very fun-feeling level. Putting those dev hours into good use and sitting how polished this game is, to the point that a DEVELOPER level is one of my favorites
While I do agree that the challenge moons could be better, I think you discounting all moons that you need to 100% the game was a mistake. More often than not, players will arrive at the castle not having completed 100%. So something like, say getting all the Koopa racing moons could be a fun challenge for them. It’s not the most creative, that much is for sure, but it will almost certainly still be fulfilling for the grand majority of players.
Yeah a lot of the extra moon are old rooms without capture or modified to be harder. Also Mushroom Kingdom is not the last part to be unlocked. Darker side of the moon? No? Okay...

Yes, I do think achievements are a good addition, but like you said it could be done better. Also, this could be a great time to bring back characters, since there will probably be different characters showing achievements each time. Anyways great video Odyssey, keep it up!
I personally think the worst thing about Odyssey is the fact that so many moons are repeated. Trace walk moons, Koopa race moons, moons where you just ground, moons where you need to where a specific outfit, Boneteer moons, moon chards, and over 1/9 of the moons that are just sitting out in the open. Despite this however, I did have a fun time replaying it, and still think Odyssey is one of the best Mario games ever made

@@sir_n0ble991 the issue is then with having a moon associated with it though, since getting all the moons is a goal a lot of people strive towards (and imo one the developers had in mind too). Having to do a crazy hard challenge to get 100% of the moons would really destroy this
21:50 Actually it’s impossible to beat the game only getting 1 achievement, as there are ones for beating the game, and getting 100 moons (the minimum is 124)
Honestly, I think most of the moons in the game *are* those sorts of "challenge achievements" - like with the RC car thing, how once you unlock the moon rock stuff, you can enter an area with more complex car racing, and you have to do well enough to get a moon. Im not sure what other "challenges" they could have had.

I can't remember whether I liked Toadette's challenges or not. I didn't mind her giving the stars one at a time, though. Thought it was kinda funny. "Here's a star, and here's another star, and another, and another, and another, and another..." As for repated moons, I didn't mind most of them, but I hated the koopa races. The fact that they're in almost every level kinda takes the specialness away from it. Like, imagine if Koopa the Quick was in every level of Mario 64.
ok, I have to ask, why do you hate them so much? they are nice and fun post-game moons that are just fun to see how good you are at moving? (tbh idk who koopa the quick is I never played 64)
Because it's kinda tiring playing the same minigame over and over again. Mario Odyssey doesn't have you walk the dotted line in every level, or try to arrange Mario's face in every level. Those minigames don't overstay their welcome, and I'm glad for it.
20:44 yeah I was 100%ing the game as I went through it and by the time I’d reached the mushroom kingdom I’d done like 45 of these and had to sit through so many
Original Mushroom Kingdom was also to include toad town and maybe even Mario's house. In their opinion they found it to be a little too large and they were unable to fill it with enough interesting moons and activities.
I can't believe Odyssey didn't mention the binocular capture that is clearly in this kingdom, we trusted you for so long, why did you have to deceive us like that?
14:39 there was actually MIPS the rabbit in the original Super Mario 64 in the basement (near the Lethal Lava Land entrance), he would spawn when the player got 15 stars, and then a second time when they have 50 stars. So I'm pretty sure that if anything it's a reference to that and not Super Mario 64 DS.
@@bsharpmajorscaleWasn't there a rabbit at the start of 64 DS you needed to catch to open the door to the castle actually? Might be a reference to that.
If I ever make a video game, I'm gonna include an achievement which is "beat the main story without earning any achievements". It's gonna be set up in a way that you have to navigate through the game avoiding achievements that you'd normally just happen across (things like jump or coin counters, or achievements for beating certain bosses in odyssey's case)
In my first 100% playthrough, I actually tried darker side with the invisibility cap, thinking it would reward me with more moons. I was very disappointed when I put in a lot of work for nothing
Imagine if in the last achievement, Toadette refuses to give you and says something like "Wait, I have a last challenge for you" and then she reveals as a secret boss of various phases in a way Monk Maz Koshia did in BotW
As someone who personally found Odyssey to be one of the weaker 3D Marios, this really ties into my main problem with how the insanely large amount of moons often bogs down the design of the game more than anything. Over half of the moons in this game just felt like filler content, and I would have enjoyed the game significantly more if it focused on a smaller number of moons but making sure they were well designed and interesting to get, rather than the massive amount of moons which require you to throw a nut into a pot, talk to some random person, just ground pound a spot, and many other uninteresting moons that bog down the pacing of the game. This problem generally worsens at the postgame, because for some reason most of the moon rock moons are really easy even though you only gain access to them after you beat the game. The Mushroom Kingdom has a similar issue to an extent, but it's not as bad because it's meant to be a break area and there's still some super hard moons in it. Honestly, I believe Odyssey sets a dangerous precedent of trying to force hundreds of moons into the game, and I'm worried that the next 3D Mario will try to recreate the amount of "content" that is in Odyssey, which leads to quantity over quality and generally poor pacing from my experience with Odyssey.
i think the intent was to feel satisfaction for exploring every inch. Finding a moon in some random cubby because you happened to look at an out of the way place just feels good. As a gamer who loves collectathons like DK64, every moon was exciting to get.
@@tlk777 Hm. For me, it just felt repetitive and not very satisfying. I definitely love exploration in games if done right, but for odyssey it just felt like the game was rewarding you with a moon for doing really little things and it just made getting moons not satisfying after a while.
I agree with achievements that they are a little easy to collect. However I think one reason they made you go through every single achievement moon individually is so that you could get the satisfaction of getting a ton of moons back to back. Using that logic, it makes sense why so many of them are so easy. That would also explain why you get them at the end. I do agree that next game they should have more achievement moons that don’t just come so easy. With the current version I feel they should have given the option to skip, but honestly for me personally I enjoyed getting several moons back to back, even if it was a little slow. It was honestly a highlight for me. Just my opinion. :)
I think the satisfaction in getting a ton of moons at once is a good thing to go for, but that idea is completely ruined in practice by just how slow sitting through all those cutscenes is. But there is something in the game that I think delivers on this idea pretty well, and that's the cutscene you get when powering up the Odyssey. The cutscene itself is of a decent length for what it is, but each individual moon you add does not repeat the entire cutscene, only adding a fraction of a second to it, plus you don't have to make any inputs between each moon, which lets it actually be satisfying. If Toadette's rewards were more like that, with one cutscene that revealed all the rewards you got, it'd be a lot better with regards to pacing.
side note: while there are mummies in the Knuckotech (I spelled that wrong for sure,) if you go back to the boss arena in the Sand Kingdom, the mummies are actually there, nice piece of consistancy
I personally find the Mecha-Wiggler rematch to have the biggest difficulty spike, mainly because of how awkward it is controlling the aiming cursor. And I don't agree with the whole concept of "more difficult = better". It can make it more interesting, and I like a challenge, but I also like not having to rip my hair out due to straight-up unfair fights or challenges lol. There needs to be a balance and the strat to succeed should take some thinking but shouldn't be cryptic either.
>Buy 10 moons in shop. >One moon animation plays, and bumps up your "in backpack" moon counter appropriately. >Go to toadette to get your 50 achievement moons you got on your playthrough up to this point. >Have to go through Toadette's dialogue, and the animation, and ask her over and over, 50 times. Yeah, I don't get it.
This is one of the many reasons why I want a centralized achievement system for the Switch like what Xbox or PSN have. Having in-game rewards for them would still be fine as many achievements in centralized achievement systems still give in-game rewards like "Talented Builder" in Fortnite gives a banner or "Cheating Death" in Minecraft Bedrock gives you an emote.
11:13 i have played super mario odyssey a lot, one of my favorite games, but there are still many things that i didn't know about, like that heart in invisible block for example. This tells very much about how much work went into the game just to add little secrets and easter eggs everywhere.
To add on to some of what you said, having it be a post-game level is fitting because in *The Odyssey*, the main character of that story does not start in his homeland, and after all the quests of the story, he ends up home.
The big problem is that the Toadette moons ARE moons, they are the main collectable of the game and as such, can't be actual challenges because then you could collect every moon in the game, but then not get 100% because you can't beat darkside with the invisibility cap on. If they had any other type of meaningful reward for the player, or heck if the Switch itself had an achievement system like xbox, that would open the door for them to actually go all out but as it stands they were kind of forced to take the route they did.
14:00 One more thing about the 64 room: It's the only place the game tells you how to Dive Jump, where you jump-throw-dive-bounce. I'm sure most people figured it out and/or saw someone else do it, but the game saves it as a sort of special technique only explained here. It doesn't even show up in the Action Guide after you read the sign!
Has anybody noticed that the map of mushroom kingdom looks like either Peach or Pauline? You could tell the the hair on the left of the map and the lips on the right. and the lips kind of protrude from the main island kind of like luncheon kingdom’s mountain. This also why I think Nintendo did as a deliberate choice. Maybe they did it for a moon? Just put it somewhere else. Mushroom kingdom is so big, after all. They have so much space to work with. because Mushroom kingdom is supposed be nostalgic, maybe they shaped it like Pauline to call back to the Metro kingdom. It would make sense, after all.
If I can make a suggestion for outlining your videos: You mentioned that there was a flaw at the very beginning, then discussed the Mushroom kingdom for 19 minutes, then came back to the flaw. It's like I was watching two different videos. Instead, say that you're going to analyze the mushroom kingdom first, and that'll naturally lead to discussing the flaw. I spent 19 minutes thinking the entire mushroom kingdom was the flaw.
Man I love all these Mario Odyssey videos you make, your writing is great and I like how you can be very critical about something you really love. Excellent work
That’s it? The biggest flaw is a bunch of achievements and the time it takes to talk to Toadette? That is only a flaw for completionists and not even a major one.
Achievements and other particular moons and moon types are some of the main reasons I think the 503 run rather than the 880 run is how to enjoy the game.
I am disappointed that you forgot to mention that the maze garden in Mushroom Kingdom ( 14:38 ) is a reference to Super Mario 64 DS or that the chests in the courtyard ( 13:50 ) are the placements of a red coin star in the DS version of Mario 64.
I didn’t mention the maze garden cause I always thought that it was a bit of a stretch to call it a reference, which I say in the video. Didn’t realize the chests represent the red coins are though, that’s pretty neat!
I have a small theory, nintendo wanted the mushroom kingdom to have 120 moons for another mario 64 reference, with toadette being there to pad the amount, they they couldn't thing on enough achievements to get to 120, so they went with 104
Personally, I think Toadette perfectly embodies why I think Odyssey is not a great game. Her moons are tedious to collect but so are many, many other moons. You even touched on it here: follow the dog. And Nintendo didn’t even do that lame moon once but several times. How about walk across the desert with a Goomba? Stomp on a VERY specific spot while your controller is shaking violently. The moon system is flawed. If Nintendo goes this route again, I seriously might not buy it. And that would be crazy as I’ve owned and beaten every Mario game since 1988.
I think the one at a time moon issue you have with toadette is caused by every moon having its own title. So if someone wants to make a screenshot of obtaining a specific moon you need to have that animation play for every single moontitle
I see that Toadette has taken lessons from Mr. Medal in Pokémon Black/White 2. Aka the "oops I accidentally clicked left while healing my Pokémon and now have to sit through minutes of dialog" guy.
You know, the Mushroom Kingdom being basically the normal grassland world is a subversion of expectations in it of itself because by the end of the game, you would expect any new levels you unlock to surprise you. Which’s makes the Mushroom Kingdom basically following the grassland trope almost 1 for 1, a subversion of expectations. It also surprises you by being after the credits, instead of at the beginning. Sure the opening cutscene takes place there. But cutscenes aren’t an interactive part of the game.
My biggest problem with Super Mario Odyssey is actually how hard it is to complete everything. I like to 100% complete things and by that I mean do EVERYTHING and Odyssey in my opinion has too much content which is actually a good problem to have. The game seems to be designed so that the player does not feel like they need to collect every moon and but every item in every shop but since I want to it sort of takes away from the game. I love the game to death but the shear quantity of everything in the game is excessive to me.
I WOULD say it’s in a similar vein to BOTW’s korok seeds in the sense that you aren’t supposed to collect all of them, but there’s clear indicators in Odyssey that motivate the player to do so.
I definetely agree with you on Profasia Gamer. I don't watch much Nintendo content just so that he, and others like him don't show up in my recommended, and spoil a game that I've been looking foward to playing.
Ya him and Beard Bear that just are like "game just came out? We hacked to the ending and here is the very last cutscene" Like it happened for me with Metroid Dread.. I honestly didn't believe the thumbnail tho since I thought it was fanart clickbait
I knew that Mushroom Kingdom existed, but I had NO IDEA ABOUT ANY OF THE OTHER STUFF! I had no idea you could get Yoshi, or that there were more than 1 moon to collect, or that you could rematch bosses!
How tf did you not explore the Mushroom Kingdom.. or not think there was more than one Star to collect? It is a big map and also.. Toadette would of given you many moons if you entered the castle..

Honestly yeah, if that's hard just place her randomly (preferably near cap toad) in each kingdom and add a separate moon counter for her achievements
As someone that had to deal with the tragedy of limited Toadette time in TTYD, I would approve of a shipboard Toadette.
They could just place her somewhere in each kingdom similar to Hint Toad, Uncle amiibo and Luigi.
The main issue i see with that is not having to do anything in any of the kingdoms if you get enough achievements early on or something like that.

So I'm pretty sure that if anything it's a reference to that and not Super Mario 64 DS.
The hedges do remind me of the outside rabbits in SM64DS, though.
@@bsharpmajorscaleWasn't there a rabbit at the start of 64 DS you needed to catch to open the door to the castle actually? Might be a reference to that.
I really like that they included the Tanooki Leaf Tree in Mushroom Kingdom. I got Super Mario 3D Land for Christmas in 2nd Grade
15:35 I actually accidentally got this moon by ground pound rolling. I will never forget this moon!
Yes! Another level-bylevel! This are some of my favorite of your videos and I hope you keep making them : ).
In my first 100% playthrough, I actually tried darker side with the invisibility cap, thinking it would reward me with more moons. I was very disappointed when I put in a lot of work for nothing

I cannot even beat it normally, I died at Pokio part bc I was confused
Because what you did was STUPID. DUH.
Should’ve checked the built-in Power Moon list.
Imagine if in the last achievement, Toadette refuses to give you and says something like "Wait, I have a last challenge for you" and then she reveals as a secret boss of various phases in a way Monk Maz Koshia did in BotW
"the purple coins in this kingdom are modeled after mario 64 coins"
purple coins from mario galaxy: am i a joke to you?
I love and fully support the level by level series. So far, every episode has been really good and well made! Congrats Odyssey!
I don't. This guy complains about EVERYTHING and claims to love odessy. Liar
I agree
To be fair, among su
I can't remember who it was, but someone made a point about some moons having the same level of difficulty to grab as random coins.
i think the intent was to feel satisfaction for exploring every inch.
The Biggest flaw in Super Mario Odyssey is that
is that Mario
I really liked that she gave each achievement independently, I enjoyed the fanfare
12:30 Does he still say “It that really you???” It was truly the best reward in gaming history.
Here’s the thing though… they could just reuse / slightly alter the animation for putting moons in the odyssey. That’s way more satisfying.
Clearly this man never held on to every blueprint in DK64 until the end of the game so you could hear "OH BANANA" 45 times in a row like I did.
I think the challenge moons might be difficult to add, since the normal moons are already pretty much an award for doing challenges.
Odyssey Central: "this is a relaxing place to end the game"
Dark side and Darker side: *exist*
side note: while there are mummies in the Knuckotech (I spelled that wrong for sure,) if you go back to the boss arena in the Sand Kingdom, the mummies are actually there, nice piece of consistancy
Yeah. The sand kindom boss with those extra mummies is an absolute pain.
Great video! Btw I just love how all the words on the end of your sentences are elongated. idk now that ive realized it its so funny to me
The prosafia gaming comment was out of left field, yet 100% valid-
Screw prosafia gaming, all my homies hate prosafia gaming
Respectfully, stop spoiling games prosafia :)
If this is Odyssey's greatest flaw, that's truly great praise.
XD i love how you used The Lord Of Lightning's theme while talking to toadette
4:57 I’m glad we all share a hatred for ProsafiaGaming’s thumbnails
When he didn't say here we go, had me on edge
The big problem is that the Toadette moons ARE moons, they are the main collectable of the game and as such, can't be actual challenges because then you could collect every moon in the game, but then not get 100% because you can't beat darkside with the invisibility cap on.
If they had any other type of meaningful reward for the player, or heck if the Switch itself had an achievement system like xbox, that would open the door for them to actually go all out but as it stands they were kind of forced to take the route they did.
28:29 I'm a little confused. The tier list shows Mario Kart tracks & Mario Odyssey worlds mixed together in the same list. Did I miss something?
Now that I think of it, Peach would have her crown on the map, so the map is more likely to be made to look like Pauline than Peach.
11:04 that thing might be a reference to the holes on the gateway galaxy for Super Mario Galaxy
In my opinion, motion controls being the best way to play is my least favorite thing
I agree
8:35 amongus really did ruin the word suspicious 😂😭
Luigi Mansion 3 had the best achievement system on the Nintendo System
When I was unlocking all the toadette moons I just took my joycon with me and made dinner while reapedly hitting the a button
Man I love all these Mario Odyssey videos you make, your writing is great and I like how you can be very critical about something you really love.
Excellent work

Big Smash Bros Stages | Level By Level
Did you know the Tanooki tail tree tail is a "bench"? If you stand on the middle of it, Mario will sit down. Just thought I'd share that
That’s it? The biggest flaw is a bunch of achievements and the time it takes to talk to Toadette? That is only a flaw for completionists and not even a major one.
Yup, Odyssey is a near perfect game, so it’s biggest flaw in the end, isn’t even that big
OK right when you told me not to be that guy, my phone decided to be that guy by tapping its own screen repeatedly and skipping ahead three minutes.
Yo this was suuper fun, ceep this up.
That was really good
Achievements and other particular moons and moon types are some of the main reasons I think the 503 run rather than the 880 run is how to enjoy the game.
This game felt like what happens if Ubisoft had their way with Mario haha!
4:58 best moment of the video
I really like this! But I have a question…… what is the “dramatic bowser music” that you use?
The dragon boss theme from the Ruined Kingdom
The inflection of your voice going down at the end of every sentence is so hard to unhear 😅
Tbh I found it kinda satisfying seeing all those moons flowing in by toadette lol
13:20 Didn't those appear in Seaside before this?
How do you do the spin groundpound so freaking fast? Your compass doesn't even move..
another new channel to scratch my video essay format media critique itch? *sigh*
*subs*
i remember talking to toadette the first time and being very overwhelmed until i realised i already had like half of the achievments
Wow, Toadette really ruined my favorite kingdom... Put toadette at f tier
@@djroscurro9859 I was gonna say "at least it ain't Korok poop!" :P
I definetely agree with you on Profasia Gamer. I don't watch much Nintendo content just so that he, and others like him don't show up in my recommended, and spoil a game that I've been looking foward to playing.
Ya him and Beard Bear that just are like "game just came out? We hacked to the ending and here is the very last cutscene" Like it happened for me with Metroid Dread.. I honestly didn't believe the thumbnail tho since I thought it was fanart clickbait
I still have yet to beat this game....I need to get back on it.
Congrats for 80k, I think you'll make it to 100k subscribers unitl march!
The prosafia gaming hate 😭😭😭
I’m sure he’s a decent person but he really needs to stop putting spoilers in thumbnails.

Odyssey’s biggest flaw is the lack of a sequel

Exactly.
Yep
I knew that Mushroom Kingdom existed, but I had NO IDEA ABOUT ANY OF THE OTHER STUFF! I had no idea you could get Yoshi, or that there were more than 1 moon to collect, or that you could rematch bosses!
How tf did you not explore the Mushroom Kingdom.. or not think there was more than one Star to collect? It is a big map and also.. Toadette would of given you many moons if you entered the castle..
