What should I do with my life?

  • Are you trying to figure out what you should do with your life? Feeling pressure to pick the “right” career? Feel trapped in your current job or situation?
My advice to you is this:
    1. Identify what it is that you’re trying to run away from.
    2. Clearly define what it is that you’re chasing. What’s meaningful to YOU? Don’t let others define what’s meaningful or important. What matters the most to you?
    3. What are you willing to change now to reach your goals?
It’s normal to feel like you need a change in life. But before you make a decision to go back to school or to pursue a professional title, be honest with your self-assessment to help figure out why you are feeling like you need a change.
Are you running from someone/ something/ some job?
Are you trying to pursue a specific opportunity / title / career / interest?
If you had the opportunity to pursue these goals today, what would you be willing to do NOW to work towards these goals?

"The thing is fulfllment doesn't really come with a job title, and joy and happiness are not a byproduct of a specific degree" I honestly wish I knew this before I went to OT school. This was super insightful!!! Thanks so much for sharing this!

This hits me deep! I completed a block of medical school before I made the extremely risky (and courageous) decision to withdraw despite having academic success. Thankfully, I don't regret my decision at all, but I struggle with wanting to have a certain "profession." I have toyed with the idea of being an entrepreneur on the side and seeing where it leads, but I've always wondered if it was feasible while working for someone else. I think the freedom/autonomy of being an entrepreneur is what draws me. I'm trying to discern if those reasons are right or not. Thanks for this very timely and thought provoking vid!

I'm so glad I stumbled on to your channel, Tim. This hit home. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology in 2017, worked odd jobs for 3 years, before deciding to go back to school for registered nursing. I was tired of feeling trapped in the cycle of low-quality odd jobs and I thought nursing would be the answer. At age 26 and now halfway into my program, I still feel lost and often contemplate whether or not I made the right decision to go back to school for nursing. I will have to ponder on the 3 questions you mentioned.

I wish I could just magically know the answer to what would make me feel the most fulfilled, but I do think that the most important thing is to enjoy the ride no matter what path it leads to and always keep in mind that adding new skills to the tool box/actively learning is never a bad thing.

literally going through this rn. in my 4 years of highs cool I was in my legal program to be an police officer. the majority of my friends were in the medical program to be a nurse and such and I took some interest in that but I couldn't switch programs, I was stuck. my junior year I really was unmotivated and didn't want to be in this field anymore but I had no backup or idea of what I wanted to do because for so long I wanted to be a cop but now with everything that's going on and with personal experience, its just something I don't want to be involved with at all. But since I had no backup, I went to a community college majoring in criminal justice. a year and a half later, currently in the middle of my sophomore year in college, im going through this withdrawal of the field. I really have no idea of what I want to do. I thought about primary care in sports medicine which is like a pt for athletes. I love the sports world and anything that has to do with that nature, its just the amount of schooling that is throwing me off a bit.

Hey sebas! You're not alone - a lot of people feel like that when it comes to deciding on a career. Take the time to shadow someone in the field and don't put so much weight on your undergrad. You can always take a few extra classes once you're done if you decide to go a different direction.

Idk what I want to do now. I was considering going again in a couple years for Journalism and media because I'd like to work in radio and tv but kinda unsure, taking a few years out beforehand to do a cabin crew job I liked the look of while I figured it out. I started looking at careers and degrees and came across physiotherapy and liked the look of it, did a shit ton of research and it's all I really want to do now but... I didn't take relevant qualifications for the courses. So now idk whether i should just ditch it and sick with journalism and media or tough out extra years learning the previous qualifications for physiotherapy. Figuring out life is hard.

I am now a junior in college and still torn on this big question - what do I want to do with my life? It stresses me out every single day. I was set on being in the medical field following high school graduation. I entered college as a Radiation Science major then ended up switching to Exercise Science after one semester. Unfortunately, I was not loving the college I was attending and the pandemic hit during my sophomore year, so I decided to transfer closer to home, where there is a university nearby with a respectable business school.
I am now majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing, but I have yet to feel like I have found a career path that is right for me. I find marketing interesting, but I do not want to have an unrewarding and unimpactful career. I find sciences fascinating; I just do not know where I would fit into the healthcare industry.
I am at a point where I feel like I have wasted my money on college so far because I still don't know what I want to do. Many people have told me just to complete my undergraduate degree, because like you have mentioned in your videos, the actual degree is often irrelevant. After all, I only have 1.5 years left to finish it. I feel so stuck and so confused. So many of my friends have everything figured out, and I am just hoping that it will work out for me in the end.
Do you or anyone have any advice for me? Thank you so much for your guidance with all of your videos.

I’ve thought about Physiotherapy before going into vet school and I’m thinking of it again if I might be better suited for me. I feel like it’s a bit less stressful and painful then being a vet and also the work and length of the degree I find is really warning me out. Not sure if I should change as I will lose a year and also lots of vets tell me to keep going saying the degree gets easier and better after the third year. I feel lost because I’ve never known like a lot of students in my course have always wanted to be a vet and never know what I would be up for.

When I transitioned from finance to physical therapy, I wasn't necessarily running away from a career in finance. I enjoyed the work, but in a way, pursuing PT seemed like it was less of a risk than pursuing a different job in finance that could lead to higher pay, promotion, etc. In reality it was more risk, but I thought I might find greater work fulfillment helping people in healthcare. (Now I realize that I help just as many people in and out of the clinic, so it's important to be honest with yourself as to why you're pursuing a career/job change) Personally I felt like I was running away from the risk of an entrepreneur by pursuing a 'safe' career in physical therapy. But the truth is that I love being an entrepreneur and it taught me that it's OK to chase after things that interest me like my side hustles and businesses. In terms of the second question, what was I chasing...I was chasing stability and a well defined career path. But there's no such thing and for someone like me who is interested in a lot of things, it's not always a good thing to 'chase' after a career. As for the third question: what could I do now?...I took action by shadowing a PT 5-10 hours a week. Before I made the jump to become a PT, I spent an entire year shadowing over 200 hours to make sure it was something I would enjoy. My though was this: if I can't spend 5 hours a week shadowing a PT right now, what makes me think it's worth spending 40 hours a week in school for 3 years + 40 hours a week working as a PT?

I am interested in the field of physical therapy, sport biomechanics, sport science, sport medicine and massage. I love helping people who are struggling to get back to their feet! I am an athlete and know the pain facing an injury and struggling to make progress.
I took a course in massage therapy and I have 3 years experience massaging clients who one of them was a Bulgarian Olympic champion in sprinting(60m).

Hi Russelliana! Thanks for your question! I studied at Washington University in St. Louis. I enjoyed the program but I recommend students pursue affordable state PT programs instead of private PT schools. The tuition for PT school is becoming outrageous so in order to avoid going into a ton of debt, I would recommend that you limit your search to state schools and graduate with less than $80,000 in total student debt if possible. Good luck!

I did ask the questions you recommended to ask ourselves to make it clear, and I found out that I was running after the title and "safe" option. Hi Tim! My names Dom and I'm 20 years old. I am currently a sophomore obtaining my undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and plan to attend a DPT program after graduation. I relate to this video very much because I love my coursework but I knew if I didn't pick a concrete job or profession to strive towards I would be lost. I honestly feel like I am in high school again getting ready to go somewhere so I can get a job and that this is the only way since I love exercise science, helping others, and discovering more about why the body works the way it does. The idea that a profession or some sort of "title" is needed for stability in a career is pushed on me often as a student and an individual from many of my elders. I am excited about what is to come with obtaining a DPT but your videos have me second-guessing this as the correct option for myself. Do you regret getting that degree? Would you do it differently if you were in my shoes right now? I would really appreciate talking to you more privately VIA direct message or email if possible. Please get back to me if you have the chance I would greatly appreciate it!

Hey Dom! Thanks for your comment! I think you’ll really resonate with next weeks video because I answer that very question: do I regret going into PT? I get where you’re coming from. The good news is that you have the opportunity now to make some smart decisions. I don’t regret going into PT but if I could go back and tell myself a few things, I would do some things differently. Our different experiences, interests, and education make us unique and contribute to our career success. Regardless of the job you have or the field you’re in, you can find success in your work...but you can also feel lost at times. My goal isn’t to dissuade people from going into PT. I just want to provide a different perspective because it can be really easy to just follow a “path” without thinking through some of the really important questions.

There are a couple of reasons but the main reason is that I feel like I can reach more people online and have a greater impact on patient education and clinician development through my website and TH-cam.
