This $450 VW GTI is a DISASTER - Can it be Saved? Winter Beater Special EP2

- This 2002 GTI VR6 was proclaimed "dead" by the insurance company after the hood came open on the highway. The plan was simple; acquire the car as cheaply as possible, replace the windshield, hood and do some basic maintenance... that's kind of how it went. #vr6

Keep the montages. I love the current flow of your videos.
loving the content! Nice to see some VW content on youtube. Hard to come by these days.
I'd like to continue to see you do little builds like this. Fix ND flip style. I enjoy the format as well your videos are a how to they tell a story of journey. No matter what you do just keep content coming and I'll be here to watch it
awsome video, always nice when a vr6 can be saved :)
More frequent content needed 😍 one of the best put together vw content I've seen.
Keep the montages!
@4:30 you don't have to show everything but you can share some tips and tricks that can be helpful. Along with some close up
From DAPs Turd32 to this winter wreck. Today has launched some good content. Keep it up.
I actually like how u do ur videos as is .
keep the montages on main channel videos and do a second channel for the detailed / less polished stuff?
I Absolutley love you content!!!!!! Keep it up!!
I love VR6 VW's. I had an 02 (I think) Jetta that was fast and awesome. far as the deep dive install/removal you could put those types of vids on a service people could watch if they wanted you'd just have to let people know it's there. Just a thought.
I whole heartedly enjoy learning to pull the engine out, i would personally like to know how to completely remove and disassemble my 24v vr6. There are not many places to find it
Had a 1997 Passat 12V VR6
2001 GTI 12V VR6
and
2004 R32
and had no problems with them. Sold my Passat and GTI for the R32, and unfortunately
Lost my R32 😢 to a flood 😪 no problems loved all 3 hope to pick up a R32 one day I just love the VR6 engine ❤️
I want one of those VR6s so bad. My plan is to find a decent host that needs some work, drop it into a 4 door golf and pair with a 5 sp manual. Drop a r32 body kit on, full leather seats and door cards, and make that my daily… one day!
EDIT: just finished the video and while I’m bummed your not keeping it, I’m glad you’re keeping that VR out of the junkyard! If I lived closer I’d buy it but cheers anyway!!! 🤙🏽
As for you asking how some of us enjoy the video format and the engine swap format, I think the time laps was just perfect
Reminds me of my 24v Jetta, loud quick with a tune but with 5th and 6th gear/Fork broken I had to sell it. A little too obnoxious for me but better in someone else’s hands
GLWS
I don't really care too much about a detailed explanation on getting an engine in and out but I've done it before so I might be biased. Anyways, just found your channel actually but I'm liking your style of videos!
Hey James! Love the channel. I have a Mk4 jetta alh 5 speed project I got for 500 bucks. Love the vw content!
Wow it sounds just like my old jetta . I love the exhaust note on these 24v vr6 but i always had problems with the car unfortunately.
I would like to see both. Maybe one video on swap and other fast. Thx. Good job, I'm a vw convert, 81 1.6 caddy
Bro where you been? Hope your well we miss your videos man!
You are somewhere between entertainment and educational. You may be repairing something on camera that would be helping someone figure out how to do their own project.
Love the videos! I am a TDI guy but I do like the VR6s. That car is far from a beater. I live in Ohio too and I've got mk5s worse than that GTI. The rockers look mint.
Content is great. I follow on TikTok too. Keep the montages.
This is the first series iv watched of this Chanel and its great! Also I'd love to chat about buying it.
love it man, nothing beats a wookie. let me know if you end up selling, i may be interested..... im in the cleveland area so not too far. im actually pretty sure i saw you at the dap season closer meet not too long ago lol.
I'm starting to feel the same way with my mk7 Golf TDI. It's a great car and I love it, but it's beginning to feel too small. Thinking about getting a Taos or Tiguan to replace it (maybe an ID.4 if I'm brave). Good luck with the sale and can't wait to see more content!
Mk7 Alltrack or TDI wagon is as spacious inside as a Mazda CX-5.
For your consideration: Volvo xc90 or xc60, the older ones are lovely imo
Waiting for more content from you.... patientally waiting.... Excited to see what you have next!
I'm curious, how does your average weekly/monthly car driving break down? Is it 80% TDI Mk6/F250 and 20% whatever fun thing you feel like? I feel like I end up doing a lot more running around for small errands in my Jeep for ease, long trips in my TDI, and then the fun stuff is if I'm "feeling it."
I have a few projects in the works right now! Some are slated to be “live” very soon…. Just have tons of editing left to do.
You would be shocked (and maybe horrified) at what I drive most. I sold my TDI back in January and picked up a Chrysler minivan to use as a truck/production van - it’s a 2014 so it isn’t a horrible miled-out junker but that’s what I end-up driving most. Second would be my Kubvan and third would be the Cabby I brought home from WA last fall! I sold the F-250 about 2 years ago because it sat more than everything combined.
Love your videos....but whatever happened with the Yellow PU "to be continued " promise?.....and the VR6 cabriolet?
Finally had the time to watch this, and all I heard is that it's for sale. 😁
You are the dude❤
Saw that you haven’t posted on TikTok in some time, just checking in to make sure all is well.
Hey man, appreciate you checking in - I am doing just fine and I’ve actually been QUITE busy with projects and stuff. I sorta’ feel like I grew out of the short form content for TikTok… plus it’s days are numbered anyway. I just did another really large trip across the country for a car and have been working on the video since!
I d love to see a swap mk2 vr6 to do cause this is my dream😊
This makes me want another Mk4 VR6... too bad i made my wife promise never to let me ever buy one again 😮💨
Please try E30 BMW they also sound good and fast
That exhaust would sound good on my Rab pickup
I wish you would show removing a Rabbit Engine I had issues with getting the Engine out of the mount
Did you pull the engine out the top or drop it out the bottom?
i use time-lapse because it looks cool...
I totally understand but it’s a shame. The car has a lot of potential and I would have loved to have seen the level you could have taken it to. But it is what it is.
It makes a good sound. Id probably take it over a 2.0T.
I have my boy i would trade for that, hes a mk5 jetta with big off road tires a manual trans and a i5, roof rack light bar.......178000 miles runs perfect, i would only trade for a manual vw from a vag guy.
I appreciate the offer but I already sold the car, sorry man.
Im not mad lol ill have it till it dies or till a good trade pops up.! Offers open to you, 07k btw😜
love it
I had a 2004 Passat GLX v6 4-motion wagon, and it was a total money pit. So fun to drive, but will never buy another European car again.
Passats in my experience are purchased by a different breed of person. GTIs are typically owned by wrenchers, whereas a lot of Passat owners don’t know they have to change the oil (let alone any other maintenance). They (again in my experience) seem to drive until the edge of death and then sell it when it goes upside down. I wouldn’t judge your VW experience based on that, but you do you boo boo.
And occasionally there is a Passat owner who is original owner of a '97 TDI. I have always changed fluids and belts on or before schedule, myself.
Is this actually a GTI in America? In Europe (certainly in Britain) the VR6s were never badged as GTIs.
The mk4 GTIs were either the 1.8T 20v or the (shameful) 2.0 8v. The V5, V6 4motion and R32 were separate lines.
Just interested in how they were marketed in different regions.
Yes it is a real US-spec GTI - I never realized that these weren’t offered in other regions without a VR6. I made a TikTok video talking about this and people RIPPED me saying it isn’t a “real” GTI but it certainly is and we also had the R32 but no VR5 options. The non-GTI/GLI VR6 MK4’s were badged as a GLX
@@JamesCooperider Cool, thanks. GLI/GLX are never referred to here. UK/EU had different TDI versions too. The 150bhp 1.9 was often badged as GTI too.
Be glad, the only people who benefitted from the V5 were oil sump makers. They were mounted too low and people cracked them very often.
Anytime there's a plaid headliner the car has mechanical issues 😅😂
🤣🤣
I really thought u was going to use that motor in your other car an sale the car parts
How about that engine in a mk1? 🤔
It would be killer in a MK1. I swapped a 12V in a MK1 a few years ago and although the car was quick, it really didn’t drive well. Or stop well. 🤣
@@JamesCooperider I’ve watched that video a few times! I have a mk1 Caddy (here in the UK) and a 24v engine sitting in my workshop. The VR6 was planned for something else and the Caddy was on the cards for a Diesel engine… 🤔 How do you find the 6 speed box compared to the 5 speed you had in your 12v?
@@robinlaker I definitely prefer the 6-speed to the 5-speed. I know there are mounts available to fit the 02M in a MK1 and that’s what would use given the chance!
@@JamesCooperider it’s definitely an option for me! I’ve got the 6 speed box too, and the plate to convert it to fwd. We only got a 4wd mk4 VR6 here so you have to blank off the oil supply feed that would go to the transfer box. The custom driveshafts are pricey but a necessity unfortunately.
Your mic is good for vocals but the engine sounds don't come through , just so you know
I like golf's. Js😊
