Great little van. My buddy had one, he put a new engine in it and sold it. The new guy started converting it to Electric. half finished and up for sale right now. Or last I heard a month back.
I’m so happy to see you not give up on it. 😊 Love the high quality of the production of your videos. Only found your channel a few weeks back when I was searching for Bora TDI videos and saw your MK4 buyers guide (excellent btw) but now you’re one of the very few channels I have on notification. Can’t wait to see the progress & look forward to your future content. 👍🏻❤️🚙🚗
Hey James, been following your TT for a while and just checked out your YT tonight. I love the way you go about things and explain what you're doin. Awesome stuff man thanks for making it.
Super happy to see it run, there is something about a classic in its full original form, but as someone who has been fighting an '82 Scirocco with CIS, I'm prepping an ABA motor for a swap because while it's nice to be all OEM and have a time capsule, I don't want to live with it.
Hey James! Love the content! I live in Berea Ohio and I think I know the laundry mat where the van came from! The building is still up! It’s abandoned now, but I was wondering if you’d be interested in some pictures of the building?
I had to replace an injector on my 81 Rabbit diesel. Issue was someone had put a helicoil in that hole and then stripped the helicoil. Ugh. I chose to put an new injector in and JB welded the heck out of it and it held for 4 years! That injector never leaked a drop but it was permanent 😂
Absolutely! Yes, a manual transmissions the plan as of now. The thought of cutting a hole in the floor for a shifter really irks me but it beats using an 01M auto, haha!
Those are not crush washers they are heat shields for the injectors. They have to be replaced after each use. And make sure when you install the new ones that they are completely flat or the per-combustion chamber will crack. Sadly I learned that the hard way!
Yeah, I know what they are - just misspoke on camera, haha. That’s terrible, though… were they in upside down or was it pinched in the pre chamber somehow?
@@JamesCooperider It pinched in the pre chamber and with the pressure from torquing the injector down it cracked . Sadly it was a perfect head that had to be replaced.
Love your videos dude! You should do more videos like this. More uploads with less editing, I’m hoping would bring you more subscribers. But a few videos throughout the month that has great storylines and editing. More videos of you tinkering with your projects would be cool. Especially learning about the cars along the way 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thanks so much! 🍻 I had a feeling this would be a favorable format over my usual style - part of the reason I filmed this video like this was to feel people out. Glad ya’ like it!
Oh no dude this was a great video overall it’s not that it was favorable over your other videos. It would just be pretty sweet if you had more uploads, but I know that things take time with editing but if you had more raw footage or uploads would be easier TH-cam algorithm from what I see favors frequent uploads I just think you deserve a bigger audience 🤷🏻♂️ But just finish this video this morning. I remember having the same motor in my first 1984 Rabbit that I had, my main issue I had amongst the other things I had fixed was the injection pump gasket was bad so eventually I just swapped a 1995 turbo diesel into it instead the swap was definitely worth it. Can’t wait for the swap in this tank 😂🤘🏻
Hey James I also had a grumman check my channel for comparison. I was told mine was the owners personal van. I bought mine out of long island Ny. Was a diesel 4 speed. Had a blast ripping it around with the doors back in the summer.
I actually watched your videos on it over summer! Of course, that’s when I was thinking about trying to find one for myself. Super neat that yours was the owner’s van - I wish the story of mine was as cool. This thing was a dry-cleaning van and then a band van for a while. Not sure what went to hell first, the band or the van
Before all the snow came, I picked up a mk2 diesel golf. What do you find is the best way to get those donor engines, seems like you come across them often.
To me the best way of getting an engine is buying a complete donor. I’ve bought a few cars from Copart just to strip for parts. Buying the whole car means you get all the ancillary bits you didn’t know you needed. PLUS, you can sell-off the parts you don’t need.
Honestly, it’s faster than I wanna drive it. Anything north of 75MPH and it feels like you’re flying a kite… I’ve had it as fast as 85 but that’s mildly terrifying haha
Out of any criticism, this is the most warranted. 🤣 To be fair, those little cans were super cheap on Black Friday and I find that the big cans run out of propellant before it’s actually* empty
@@dhurley77 I had the fuse bypassed entirely, it was a straight shot right to the plugs - I checked them before putting the injectors in and they were all working! The injection pump is pretty tired. It took forever just to bleed the air out of the lines
I agree but the only reason I am going to swap it is because the swap is 100% reversible. No cutting, no welding. But with the swap also means I can actually drive the thing and not have it strung-out going 50mph
if you need an unpaid intern old guy... to speep, and hold a cammera... I really would love to lean all this kind of stuff and i am in delaware... so maybe close.....
hey man, jealous that you got it to run. great video by the way but where did you find the socket for the injectors, i have a 84 4door diesel rabbit as my first car and im thinking the injectors are clogged and i cant seem to find the socket.
If you ever have a chance to go see your friends, go see them. No truer words spoked 💯. Another excellent video James!
Keep these videos up love This kinda stuff!!!😁
Love the videos and your style. I see alot of others incorporated in yours!
I have a lot of influences for sure. I’m glad it comes across well, thanks man! 🍻
glad to see you make long videos
When theyve sat that long they LOVEEEE glowplugs live while cranking
Man, glad I stuck around for the end of that! Can't wait to see where she goes from here!
Great little van. My buddy had one, he put a new engine in it and sold it. The new guy started converting it to Electric. half finished and up for sale right now. Or last I heard a month back.
Glad your persistence paid off!!
What an ending 😂 love it
Gotta love an old Bosch IDI diesel. My T3 has a 1.7 KY is so basic, I love it.

I'd still really like to see it runnn
Watchin it on the tv to get the full experience 🤙🏼 just started it but really good work 🔥
Hahaha thanks dude! I appreciate all the help, parts and guest appearance 🍻
Awesome job man!

youre talking about the steel high pressure lines, yes I always leave that retainer on theres always a use if it was on there from the factory.
Love a win 👍
Thanks for the update.. keep up you're positive attitude
Love the long form video format!
Fun episode! I cheered at the end LoL… congrats!

I always curious about what grumman made during the mail truck tests. Saw the LLV footage but no other footage. Good find
Would definitely watch if u kept the engine and did a mild build on it
I hope you’ll be able to do TH-cam fulltime soon. I really like yourvideos
I do too. Thanks! 🍻
A tdi swap into that van will make for an awesome vehicle. Thanks for the video.👍 Are you going to use a manual transmission?

Love your videos, wish I was mechanically inclined! Ran into you Saturday, was nice to meet you.(don't think I introduced myself, though😜😳♥️
A-ha, yes! It was nice meeting you. Although I'm biased, I hope you're able to get a VW soon!

Great video! But I’m concerned that you don’t have showers 😂
🤣
Not only is that a crush washer its a heat shield to keep the spray nozzle from getting burned up
the earlier 1.5's had that timing advance as well. what about glow lplugs that makes a starting difference
Cool
How you ran in at 25:17 😂
Does that SAE 19mm wrench come with a 3/4” conversion?
Will there be a video for the engine swap or any more work on this bad boy?
Yes! I’m getting to work in a few days. Trouble is, I’ve got a lot of stuff in the works but yes, absolutely.
glow the glow plugs it needs those too
Those run under very hot conditions too and those Injectors can crack and even that Aluminum Head, unless you didnt know that!!!

I would've got out the respirator and the can of ether spray☺ Sounds like rod knock...
Given this thing’s service history… I would 100% suspect rod knock. Oh well, I just wanted to see if it would do something! 🤣
hope its in Neutral gear have a glat Cooperider guy
Do u have merchandise for sell man
Why not try a little starting fluid? Give it a little help to start up
What's going on James. From morrow county here
Hey, right on! 🍻
Hopefully the Timing Belt didnt jump time and you dont bend the Valves
Boy. You are an adult. Time to start buying the adult size cans of BP blaster

glow plugs and timing
walmart value batteries $50 and theyre AWESOME!!
🤣🤣 and new! Unlike my scrapyard special lmao
That was also a failed prototype design for the new 1982 checker cab car design!!
wow maybe we should stick with the OG 1.9 vw diesels
1.9 all the way! 🤣
better see if the timing is correct
Vr6 !!!!
maybe the valves have junk on them
GLOW PLUGS GOOD🤔
I replaced them when I had the injectors out haha

@@dhurley77 possibly. It’s diesel I siphoned out of a wrecked car I had through the shop. It should only be about 6-8 months old.

Oh man, wanna get rid of it? Haha 🤣
@JamesCooperider I do actually. I'm in C. Arkansas
I feel like if there's only 500 left, the original engine should stay in the van.
I agree but the only reason I am going to swap it is because the swap is 100% reversible. No cutting, no welding. But with the swap also means I can actually drive the thing and not have it strung-out going 50mph

vr6 swap it o_o
