Thank you for another good video. Very good presentation. Looking forward to more. Glad you're staying safe & healthy. Looks like we'll be under house confinement for quite a while. Need something to do. Your educational series will really help. Will probably start at the beginning of all. Take care. Again, thank you.
this was my first year of really spoonplugging, so I spent most of it contour trolling the first 3 : 500, 400 and 250. I was impressed by how well those two little lures caught nice fish! However, I had trouble getting the 500 to run well unless I was going pretty fast, it seemed to want to spin when trolled slow? Also, I'm having to travel a couple of hours to get on a lake that isn't "no wake" or electric only. Definitely going to hit Lake Springfield and Rend next season (Illinois)!
Make sure you use a small snap when you tie on the Lure . Do you not use a snap swivel! Simply use the small number two or three snap that's available at Bucks Baits. Now there is occasion when someone might step on a Lure , or something of that nature that would interfere with how the Lure is running but, the good news with spoonplugs is, if one is not running correctly you know it immediately (you will feel it) !
Dexter Lichtenstein Sure is nice to see you back on the water again. Just wish it had been a little earlier because soon the lakes here in Wisconsin will be under ice.
Hey Dexter I'm totally with you on that my friend. It's really been a horrible year! My wife, mother-in-law, my uncle, my brother-in-law, and quite a few of my friends all developed COVID-19. So much of the year was spent getting well and quarantining. However, with all that being said I am doing a very intense and complete on the water training series covering all aspects of successful fishing. So my plan is we should all just write 2020 off and spend the winter preparing for a great fishing season in 2021!
@@DonDicksonFishing I am already going over what I have and need to get ready for next season. Main thing is all are on the mend and the Good Lord is watching over.
Great information as always. At what water temperature does trolling become ineffective? How cold of water temperature does it slow down or stop working?
Hey partner, thanks for the question. The truth is the only time I stop trolling, is during icefishing season!!! When teaching Buck Perry's on the water schools in northern Ontario in early June, I would regularly troll the Winnipeg River at depths of 35 and 45 feet with tremendous success, using my river rig setup...but still trolling! I will be explaining that procedure later on in my underwater series!
New to your channel well about my 3rd video of yours and I've seen a little on speed control and you counting while letting out the line, so about how far back are you wanting your lure ? Also do you see a difference in what color lure to use while trolling ? I'm in Ky.
yeeehaaa!! Been waiting for this for a long time. I was gonna ask where the marker was when you caught that fish. Are going to talk about your speeds while trolling the shallows? Thanks for this Don and Ali.
Hey old friend Mr. Moody, let me say as a general statement, most fisherman fish far too slowly most of the time! Now I want to caution you that occasionally when I have two people fishing in a boat, my wife will also carry the go Pro camera. The best results come from our Sony 4K camera. But the go Pro is great when you just have to quickly grab a Camera to shoot somebody catching a fish! However, the GoPro tends to change the appearance of speed. It makes it seem like we're going faster than we really are. But it's important to understand, here in Florida even in November the water is still very warm. When I am running the shallows, most of the summer and fall season in Florida, I'm trolling somewhere between 5 and 10 mph! Speed is a very important in triggering a strike!!!
I love these videos and have been trying to practice putting Buck’s techniques to use for two years. Admittedly I am still not very good at it at. The number one problem I have is getting hung up on weeds while trolling Spoonplugs. It seems I can’t make it more than 50 yards without retrieving my lure and cleaning the weeds off....big clumps of cabbage and coontail. I know I am not IN the weeds, I am on the outside edges (unless my depth finder is completely off which I don’t believe it to be). I usually end up getting frustrated and going to jig for crappies just to get some action. If you have any suggestions for working around this I would be extremely appreciative!
When running a weed line, whether it is cabbage or any other type of submerged weeds, you must first establish the depth that the weeds grow! Most of the time with cabbage that depth will be around 10 to 15 feet, depending on water color. Once that depth has been established, you then should be able to run the outside edge with the use of your depth sounder. If you continue to have troubles, it's OK to throw A few markers and then make your trolling passes. You must continue to get better at this phase of your fishing. It will help you catch an awful lot of fish!
@@DonDicksonFishing Thanks for your reply Don - much appreciated. If, for example, the weed line stops at 12 feet but the weeds are submerged and only grow to a depth of seven feet would you make trolling passes over the tops of the weeds until you reach the edge of the weed line or would you start your trolling at the edge of the weed line at 12 feet?
Hey Nathan, to be quite honest occasionally you will get hung up! The trade-off here, is I've seen it many times where if lure was just a few feet away from the face of that grass line or weed line, you just didn't catch the fish!. Buck Perry always said, you need to feel your Lure occasionally touching the outside edge of the weeds, if you want to be successful!
November in Florida is sort of our fall fishing. The water is still quite warm from the summer months, so the trolling speed in the shallows is pretty fast. My 500 and 400 passes we're at a speed of about 6 to 7 mph. As I got a little deeper into 250 water I backed off to about 5.5 mph! I will be talking more about speed control in future videos!
I used to hold my rod JUST like you do, against my knee:) The 'little things' are coming back to me. Can't wait to get back on the water!
You know this guy for sure has some good videos when it gets liked even before it airs!
As far as I'm concerned, we are SOOOOO lucky to have Don. Just like having Buck right there in the boat with you:)
Thanks Don ------ Always trying to learn!!!!!!!!!!
I really like these on the water series!

If you seen how he was trolling the 500 it seemed really fast and as he went bigger he slowed down

I have just started trolling but I had no idea that you would be going that fast, most of mine is about 3 mph or less. Guess I need to speed up

I was taught to count colors. How do they relate to 'layers'?
How do you not get snagged so close to the weeds?
