I’m excited for your Tahoe project! I have a 2005 Yukon XL. It was my dad’s and he gave me the keys to it when I graduated high school with the condition that I’ll be the one maintaining it. Tune up, transmission service, differential service, u-joints, shocks, new tires, brake pads (changed for the first time after 140k miles) and rotors all done. 204k miles and still strong. I learned most of these things from TH-cam videos like yours! Keep up the good work and great content! I just ended up buying a small stainless steel housing camera on Amazon and mounted it just under the bumper but above the hitch receiver. It's been really good so far.
We just bought a 2005 GMC Yukon SLT loaded with options for $1300, it did have a loud whining noise coming from the front differential so we replaced it with one out of a wrecking yard that was in very good shape it was difficult to find one with the correct 4:10 gear ratio that was also all wheel drive. We are enjoying your videos and we are planning to do many of the same things to ours so thank you for blazing the way for us and showing us how your doing everything your doing to your Tahoe, please keep up the great work.
Great job on this video and install! I've done two of these in my Suburban and Silverado and the one additional step I like to take is replacing the cigarette lighter with an in-dash USB port. You can also get one with HDMI if you have that coming out of the head unit. I really makes for a clean install and then you just need a standard USB cable to your phone.

I don't know if you solved your engine light problem but I ran into the same issue in my Yukon where the light would talk about lean bank issues with 1 and 2. I tried changing out the fuel pump and filter and that didn't fix it. Eventually figured out it was the FlexFuel module going bad. They're about $300 online so I went to the junkyard and bought one for $8 and the light went out. I also gave it a Seafoam treatment through the PCV valve and the truck seriously runs like new. Anyway, thanks for all the videos. All have been very helpful and we appreciate the time you put into them.

Very easy way to test your intake manifold gaskets will be to spray some water during a cold start. If the engine shakes more the gasket is leaking once it warms up the material expands. I would recommend doing knock sensors while you’re in there they tend to get corroded over time with the short harness
Part of the problem is the sound deading foam under the intake manifold. It holds the water. My suggestion is to replace the intake manifold with a TBSS manifold. Apply some heat barrier on the bottom side of it, replace the foam, and the knocksensors. TheTBSS manifold is the best cathedral port stock manifold period. The money aftermarket manifold that will out perform it is the fast LSXTR manifold. You will need to keep your stock injectors and use the TBSS TB with adapter harness. Then go to speed engineering for their CAI (got mine for $50). If you do that and tune it, you can thank me later

I currently own 2004 Chevy Tahoe Z71..... I had the exact engine codes - replaced the intake gaskets (new version kit) ..... fixed the problem. Good luck!
Is there anything car wise that LSX Matt can't do? I really enjoy all of your content. I subscribed to your channel last year beginning with the LSX Camaro. Gen 3 is my favorite body style hands down. I did own a Gen 2 '80 Z28 which I loved, but there is just something about those 3rd gen. I have enjoyed watching the Tahoe videos, and I cannot wait to see what you do with the Trans Am. I think your channel is just going to continue to grow. I wish you the best in all of your future endeavors.
Hey dude, very nice videos. The codes following a diagnostic flow, this this common the 1 half of the engine. Being old school, I use my 80’s propane enrichment tool with a length of brake tubing to get into tight places. The fuel pressure regulator is common to all cylinders. Use a fused jumper wire and a cheap “Lab Scope” to view the fuel pumps wave form, that should pull 7.5 amp, but with an even stabile waveform. “Tech Tip” If doing intake gaskets, place a thin coat of dielectric grease on both sides. This not only helps with 2K seal, but allows the silicone seals to slide and move a little. Just a tip. Nice job on the videos and I understand most don’t have a “Lab Scope” in the garage. But at the dealer, I used the primary side of the engine scope, only buying an amp probe. As each commutator plate passes under the spring loaded brush, conducts amperage thru it. Pressure is easy as controlled by the regulator. Every time you fill the tank, their is dust, dirt unless an EVAP failure like driving dirt roads. If you replace the tank solenoid because it can’t seal, place a foam/cloth filer over it as it is open all of the time, until it runs an EVAP test for small or larger leaks. Good video.
Dude thank you for having this video ive been looking aimlessly through TH-cam and all the videos I can find get me no where. I have an 06 F150 but you explained enough to understand what needs to happen! Thank you!
I bought a 2006 Tahoe a year and a half ago. It’s since been totalled but I did have a persistent P 300 code that kept coming up and I could not figure out why. I realized that ot was in a narrow rpm (2500-3000) range that the check engine light would come one and after a lot of Internet research I found that it may have been a camshaft or crankshaft position sensor relearn being required by the ECU. I took it to the local Chevy dealer and they wanted to charge me $80 for a diagnostic and then proceeded to say it needed a $150 tuneup. I asked them to check the camshaft/crankshaft position sensor relearned and they did in fact relearn it which got rid of that code. It was a pain. That required the dealer computer. I’m not sure if HPTuner would work.
Yoooo the geese 🤣🤣🤣 we both said WTH at the same time 😂 Awesome vid! Can’t wait to get this radio and install it in my Chevy Tahoe 😊🙌🏻 throwing in the rear view camera and stuff was a plus! Thanks 🙏🏻
Great video Matt,we had a 02 Tahoe 4×4 4.8 we never had a problem with it except for the knock sensors and a water pump, and or had over 180,000 miles on it,these are very reliable SUVs, hey yours looks great,we bought a 2013 Escalade ESV and we have had several issues with it versus the Tahoe hey man keep the vids coming!
So I wired mine up all colors matching and I get no power. Any ideas? One of the wiring harnesses I had to buy to converter to the chevy came with an extra red wire.
Doing this install now. Don’t know if anyone has mentioned it but the PAC unit has a signal wire for reverse built in so you don’t have to tap into the reverse light.
I had a Pioneer installed in my 2004 Envoy, it had to use the adapter harness as well. I thought with keeping steering wheel controls the adapter would utilize the factory microphone built in with the OnStar, I was wrong. The installer mounted the mic right at instrument cluster, did not like the look of it there. Found a nice back up camera on Amazon to use, but again the installer instead of running wire through the factory rubber grommet that had the wires for tag lights and rear wiper/washer, he drilled through the sides of it and ran wire beside it. The adapter harness chime sounded awful. I had it all taken it back and had them remove the aftermarket radio and re-install factory radio, just was not satisfied with the look. Wish the installer would have said " hey this is how this will look, this is what I have to do, etc" I would have returned the stereo then so he would not have installed it. The Pioneer radio was great, sounded good, but the small buttons and trying to work it caused some distraction while driving so it was not worth it to me.
Agree , intake manif. gaskets. Dealer has an improved design gasket set. And, yes, do knock sensors while in there. Also rubber grommets at the intake bolt stations. My Tahoe would run rough on initial cold startup ....lean...vacuum leak at intake gaskets.....same DTC. Easy fix. Spray inside of plastic manif. with carb cleaner a couple of times to soften the crud and blast the inside at a coin car wash/power washer. Have fun. I’d also service the tranny immediately. Drop-the -pan technique....not back-flush technique. Back flush pushes filter gunk back into the system and the filter doesn’t get changed. Bad choice. Top off fluid with a synthetic. I know you know this stuff. Do diffs and transfer case fluids too. Coolant too. Just unsolicited advice from an old man. 250K on my 2001 Tahoe and it tows my equipment trailer...dual axles 4500# loaded with my carpentry tools.....5 days a week. Original 5.3 engine/trans/transfer case/diffs. Bummer is that rust is starting in usual Tahoe locations. I’ve gone through all the mechanicals including ABS module....send the circuit board to Module Masters. Cold solder joints in circuit board of said module is a classic failure with this series of truck. Mechanical fixes are straight forward but rust...that’s a pisser. I don’t weld. Should I spend the dough for a pro to do it or slick it up, sell and move on? Ideally, I’d like a rust free Z 71 with a toasted engine and swap in a LQ9 ...6.0 ..345 horses. These are great vehicles. Comfy. Cheap parts, lots of aftermarket parts options. Another thing I did.was clean the dirt from behind the weather stripping on the body . I placed 1/4” thick 1” wide peel and stick foam behind the weatherstripping which tightens up the door to weatherstrip fit. Eliminated wind noise. Also, replace the heating/cooling system filters under the dash. I’m enjoying your vids. Dave Heitman Semper Fidelis
I have a 2002 Silverado 1500. It has 156k miles on it. I’ve spent around $3k on problems since I bought it a year ago. Had to replace fan clutch, alternator, brake lines, spark plugs, 16 push rods, 16 rocker arms, both rear brake rotors, all rear brake pads, one rear brake caliper, intake leak, and a few other things I can’t remember.. Coolant started leaking into the engine at some point, not good! Put some coolant leak sealant into it and it no longer leaks for now. Now the engine light is back on. Engine still makes a nice ticking sound all the time even with all the crap I’ve done. This truck has been nothing but trouble for me since I bought it.. previous owners must not have cared much for it.
That looks insane! could you maybe post a picture or make a short vid of how you did all the connections? was it easy and did the instructions tell you exactly what to do? I want to do this but looks complicated
I just bought a 1990 Chevy K3500 Extended Cab 1-Ton 4x4 Dually that I am fixing up that unfortunately the radio does not work in and I am trying to find a good modern replacement like this setup for. Normally I wouldn't have bought a 30-year old vehicle, but I found out from the DMV that this is the one and only Chevy 1-Ton 4x4 Dually registered in the entire state and it only has 38,000 original miles on it, so I couldn't pass it up for $5,000. Hopefully I will be able to find something that will work in that truck that looks as good and as "stock" as yours came out.
I just got a 05 Tahoe with 102k for a steal I think I’m going to do this same set and always love seeing your videos especially the camaro I have 2 of those haven’t got the courage to LS swap yet but that’s the plan for at least one of them
Even though it’s a two year old video/comments but, all sensors have a shelf life! Old sensors ultimately cause fuel mileage, and chasing ones ass trying to figure it out quickly since they seem to finally go out when time isn’t on ones side!!
Yet another excellent video. I like the way your confidence is very reassuring, Even when you aren't 100% sure that exactly what step you're at is going as it should, you let the viewer know it can and will be solved. This is really important because so many of us are so afraid we'll screw things up we never even try. That's what we in the Royal Navy call "A life lesson."* One of the most comforting things to those of us similarly afflicted (blessed?) is how your OCD keeps everything looking professional. Most people think, "Radio, good. Me make loud now." You give thought to the fact that it won't be switched on 100% of the time, so it should LOOK good, too. Choosing a simple design - very subtle but clever, and refitting the mount with a couple of washers so the bezel fit better with less gap, top marks. Thanks for another superb video! Now, if you can make one on how to get Apple Carplay on one of those cheap $49 Amazon wonders you installed in the Malibu... *...I'm not really in the Royal Navy.
What was the actual size of the radio? I have a 2001 Tahoe and my double din is too big and I dont wanna trim the bezel or pay $300 for the double din bezel.
Do your rear air controls still work with the aftermarket radio? Not the ones on the headliner in the front, but the radio/hvac controls in the second row. My suburban has the same air controls and second row controls, but the second row controls don't work. My car had an aftermarket stereo installed when I bought it and the second row controls never worked. I'm just trying to do some prediagnosis investigation to point me to the right area. Makes diag a little quicker. Thanks.
nice Tahoe really clean look. I must say, I too was having the same problems with the early morning cold starts. my Tahoe would tremble a bit and the engine light would show up a while.
The "capacitor of whatever the hell this thing is on here, this filter or whatever" is a ferrite bead! They're on a lot of different cables with power going through them to minimize EMI (Electromagnetic Interference), particularly good for cords with power and audio through the same cord so you don't get buzzing sounds and whatnot. It's just a cylinder of ferrite wrapped around the cable. Nice clean head unit install btw!
Does that same module for retaining the steering wheel controls connect to the rear entertainment monitor? I've seen where putting an aftermarket radio loses the rear controls. My kids are definitely spoiled with the TV in the back of my 2005 Tahoe
Your Pre-Cats are failing. Exact same thing happened to my Suburban many years ago. At the end of it, the pre-cats on the drivers side were completely bricked. Same issue, mysterious check-engine light, runs good, until it didn't. I did not get a catalyst code until the pre-cat was completely toast. Happened around 198K miles.
Matt, curious why you didn’t use the mic already located in the headliner of these trucks (I’m guessing they are for Onstar? Seems it would be easier than adding the additional mic. Great vid!
I’m wondering if it’s just all mechanics having an ocd lol my husband has to get it exactly perfect if he’s doing anything lol and if he’s working on his 86 z28 Camaro forget about it if it doesn’t look PERFECT he’ll be outside all night lol..
I really like the Sony head units because like you said they do look more stock ish and I like Sony's UI. I used the same module Radio Pro 5 to install an iPad in my 2011 Silverado so that I retained steering wheel controls and On-Star with a Sony single din head unit behind the iPad mini. It has worked perfectly for about 4 years now. Great vid. thanks for sharing.
Wow this is great! Thanks for sharing this. I wanted to update an old 06 yukon to get bluetooth and backup camera. A guy wants $900 including a basic double din & camera. With patience and this video, I feel confident I can do this myself, thanks for sharing!
I am wondering if the camera works if you use the HU menu to access the camera, and not put it in reverse, so you can watch the reverse cam while driving down the road..... with the way you wired up the camera, (tap from reverse light positive at the tail light, to both the RCA Video red pigtail cable to HU reverse wire, and the camera positive wire as a T connection, and ground of camera to chassis ground?) Also how come the parking brake wire was never spoken about, I thought that was mandatory for the unit to work?

Get yourself a usb socket from a 07-14 Tahoe. Fits where the cigarette lighter is. I did that when I installed my double din. Makes for a factory clean looking install.
Nice to know. I was thinking of getting a universal usb socket to mount somewhere.
LsxMatt here is a link to the one I got swapped both out because these have nice chrome bezels too. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F231895107012
i just got my first car and it’s a 2011 honda pilot. i’m planning to do some things to it and two things i wanna do are install apple car play and a back up camera. thank you for posting this video man. my almost ten year old car about to feel brand new😎
I currently own 2004 Chevy Tahoe Z71..... I had the exact engine codes - replaced the intake gaskets (new version kit) ..... fixed the problem. Good luck!
Bruh who else saw them 3 Blink-182 tpj albums and that he was listening to Box Car Racer? What a man of culture
Love these suburban videos! I just got my 08 Yukon XL the other day. This is getting me pumped up on fixing mine up
Hey dude, very nice videos.
04 Yukon xl with 211k miles. Runs great. Engine light on, ordering my knock sensors. Changing that first.
The Pioneer radio was great, sounded good, but the small buttons and trying to work it caused some distraction while driving so it was not worth it to me.
your videos have helped me so much with my yukon. thanks Matt!
Did you ever figure it out
I just bought a 1990 Chevy K3500 Extended Cab 1-Ton 4x4 Dually that I am fixing up that unfortunately the radio does not work in and I am trying to find a good modern replacement like this setup for.
Just did the same setup but my steering controls aren’t working, I bought the same kit , stereo and camera you did.... not sure what I missed 🤔
Got an ad from Ford "considering buying a Chevy tahoe? Check out the Ford SUVs" LOL
Racinq it’s funny because 3 months later I got the same ad for a Ford Expedition
Id rather have a Ford..
Antenna adapter, the length is not the issue. The size of the connector is the issue.
Yet another excellent video. I like the way your confidence is very reassuring, Even when you aren't 100% sure that exactly what step you're at is going as it should, you let the viewer know it can and will be solved. This is really important because so many of us are so afraid we'll screw things up we never even try. That's what we in the Royal Navy call "A life lesson."*
One of the most comforting things to those of us similarly afflicted (blessed?) is how your OCD keeps everything looking professional.
I don’t know if I missed it, where did you connect the amp wire to? (Blue wire - min20:56)
I wish this would fit in the little cubby on an 88-94 Chevy truck dash… not in the middle of the dash under the AC
Wow this guy is a genius everything was neat and on point great job
When you say washers underneath the faceplate to bring up the head unit to get rid of the gap what do you mean I’m doing a similar install to my tahoe
My 04 yukon has the same gap around the radio. I'd like to see your washer trick to get rid of it.
What was the actual size of the radio? I have a 2001 Tahoe and my double din is too big and I dont wanna trim the bezel or pay $300 for the double din bezel.
Where did you get the cordless solder gun?
Its butane powered. You can get them on Amazon, power probe makes the one I have.
Sweet I’ve been trying to do this to my 09 impala this was very informative
Do your rear air controls still work with the aftermarket radio? Not the ones on the headliner in the front, but the radio/hvac controls in the second row. My suburban has the same air controls and second row controls, but the second row controls don't work. My car had an aftermarket stereo installed when I bought it and the second row controls never worked. I'm just trying to do some prediagnosis investigation to point me to the right area. Makes diag a little quicker. Thanks.
Where can I get the wiring harnesses. I have an 01 Yukon xl and I’m trying to do the same thing
Check description
@@jackrung4030 got the wiring harnesses and a metra install kit now I’m just waiting on a whole new metra dash kit so that it will fit properly.
Thanks Matt, this video made installing the double din and backup cam in my suburban a breeze.
nice Tahoe really clean look.
I have the same back up camera and haven’t had a problem yet and I’ve had it since the summer
Could you show how you installed the washers to fix the gap between the touchscreen and the panel?
Does that same module for retaining the steering wheel controls connect to the rear entertainment monitor? I've seen where putting an aftermarket radio loses the rear controls. My kids are definitely spoiled with the TV in the back of my 2005 Tahoe
Your Pre-Cats are failing. Exact same thing happened to my Suburban many years ago. At the end of it, the pre-cats on the drivers side were completely bricked. Same issue, mysterious check-engine light, runs good, until it didn't. I did not get a catalyst code until the pre-cat was completely toast. Happened around 198K miles.
Matt, are you able to get the DVD player to play through the speakers (RSE source) with the new radio? Can’t find this answer from anyone!
In the 50’s, maybe 60’s coming. It was like 88 here in Orlando today and we were sweating installing a Gibson exhaust on my brothers ‘16 Tahoe😂
Ran mine up to the arm rest Matt. Dint want to have to reach so far.. great vid
Matt, curious why you didn’t use the mic already located in the headliner of these trucks (I’m guessing they are for Onstar? Seems it would be easier than adding the additional mic. Great vid!
How is the navigation without the Sony doing the navigation? Normally car play offloads that to the receiver head
I’m wondering if it’s just all mechanics having an ocd lol my husband has to get it exactly perfect if he’s doing anything lol and if he’s working on his 86 z28 Camaro forget about it if it doesn’t look PERFECT he’ll be outside all night lol..
How did you fix the auto climate control knobs? Mine are jumping all around too. I want to replace the bulbs while it’s apart aswell.
Thanks
I really like the Sony head units because like you said they do look more stock ish and I like Sony's UI. I used the same module Radio Pro 5 to install an iPad in my 2011 Silverado so that I retained steering wheel controls and On-Star with a Sony single din head unit behind the iPad mini. It has worked perfectly for about 4 years now. Great vid. thanks for sharing.
I would like to see a pic of that, that is what I was thinking of doing to my escalade. Thanks in advance
Wow this is great! Thanks for sharing this. I wanted to update an old 06 yukon to get bluetooth and backup camera. A guy wants $900 including a basic double din & camera. With patience and this video, I feel confident I can do this myself, thanks for sharing!
If you keep getting a miss fire code try changing the coil packs, it worked for me
That sony radio fits right in. Love it.
I have one question. How do y’all get it to where all speakers play sound. I wired everything correctly but only the front and the very back speakers play sound my mid speakers are quiet 24/7. Pls help. I have a 2001 GMC Yukon XL
Intake gaskets bro they have been redesigned for 171/174 very common issue gm master tech I did mine in my Yukon at 160k and I just did a radio in my Yukon damn you gm why didn’t you make a ignition wire for us and make us buy a damn interface for so much $$ also so happy to see you soldering connections and not being a hack
nice video matt. these are the kind of videos that i enjoy watching.
If you bypass the amp can you still use the PAC RP5-GM11
Would love to do this for my Envoy. I'm just not good at soldering 😪
Per a few comments. My Tahoe threw a few misfire codes n after all it came down to bad O2 sensor. Love the upgrades you gave to your Tahoe!
Would love to see a 3 month update vid on the stereo. Any glitches you have experienced and what you did to resolve them. Thanks man!!
