  • Growing Tropical Hibiscus is a rewarding and exciting process. Learn how to grow these fancy, dramatic dinner-plate sized flowers with the right cultural care. Full sun, and high light levels are crucial for successful flowering as well as the right amount of water and feed. All this revealed in our latest instructional video with horticulturist, Byron Martin.

    Hibiscus growing truly is a bit of an art and experience does show when you know which rules to 'break'. I live in Trinidad and Tobago, and a lot of us with hybrids find full sun isn't great for potted hybrids. For the standard hibiscus, fine, it'll thrive. But down here, 3-4 hours direct sun, and rest of the day in a bright, well lit place for indirect sun, is perfect.
    Wish I had the expertise Byron has so I can problem solve better.

    Thank you for this short presentation. I was looking for a short "how to" that hit all the major points to show to a friend who has a potted hibiscus. This hit the major points, was concise, and clear.

      +Bill Morcom Spray with pure neem oil 2 tbl and 4 tsp of dishwashing detergent. It’s a safe product. Just make sure you do repeat application at a week apart. 3 times usually is what it takes.

  • @wendywillow1
    @wendywillow1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just so I understand - do you fertilize during the winter? I live in Canada where I bring in my hibiscus plants (in pots) about September when the temps dip into the 40's at night.
    I find they go dormant in winter (so don't feed them) and I put them either in south or north facing windows. South get more sun, of course, but since they're not flowering, does it matter? I found the north windows to provide adequate light with slightly cooler temps (as there is no direct sunlight to heat up the plant). Would appreciate some advice. Hope this is not too long! Thanks.

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Wendy Willow No generally stop feeding in the winter October to March especially if temperatures drop below 65 consistently. At this time of the year there isn’t; enough light in day length or light intensity to promote plant growth and thus use the fertilizer given. Under cool temperatures where the root system is cold plants don’t absorb the fertilizer very well. A south is better for hibiscus is you have the room as they will come into flower earlier as the season progresses. But a north window will hold them until they can be moved outside for the summer.

    • @wendywillow1
      @wendywillow1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +LogeesPlants OK so for us up here in Canada, the temps drop below 65 in September pretty consistently and we can't put our hibs back outdoors until mid-May.
      Often I see new growth about February (indoors, of course) and sometimes even flower buds, but usually it takes the real outdoor sunshine for the flowers to emerge. That being said - I had 1 lonely bloom yesterday on my "tree" hibiscus - one of the ones sitting in a north facing window. No other buds however. Wish I could add a photo here.
      I do usually start to add fertilizer when the new leaves come out (around Feb as stated above). Thanks.

    Hi, I just purchased two “spin the bottle” Hibiskiss (how it is spelled on the tag) the flowers close and open and many are falling off. Is there anything I can do to prevent the flower from falling off the plant? I am a beginner at plant growing. I plan to repot them and leave it on my balcony I live in South Florida so there is plenty of sun.

    I have a beautiful Hibiscus Potted, I have it outside all summer,and bring inside during the colder months, it has even blossoms inside, also new leaves, however right now, it's leaves are turning yellow and falling off, is this something that is natural or is there something I must do to save it. It has one other time lost all its' leaves and then filled out again. Thank You if you have any answers to what I might do different

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      These do tend to go into a semi-dormancy and will lose most of their foliage during the winter months. Come spring time, they usually start taking off with flushes of new growth.

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, just make sure to slowly acclimate it into the full sun or it can bleach the leaves.

    Dear sir
    What is the best potting mix for hibiscus,?

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We usually suggest a well-draining mix free of any slow release fertilizers. We use 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 pine bark, and 1/3 pearlite.

    Hi,
    is NPK 20-20-20 okay or is it too high?
    Also, what about urine fertilizer? it's great for bougainvillea, does it help with hibiscus too?

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A balanced fertilizer is fine for hibiscus. We would go a little lower, like a 7-9-5. Urea is typically not used because it throws off the balance.
