My hibiscus came back on coast of NC. GOD bless you I mulched it down really good but it rarely gets below freezing here. In 70s and 70s a lot
Had no idea that Hibiscus plants could be grown indoors. I have only ever seen them outdoors and I have 4 red ones that I just planted in my yard last month. I’m in 9b, so I’ll have to cover them when the temperatures dip. They are so beautiful so the extra effort will be worth it. Thanks for all of the tips!

Hello there, this is one of the best videos I have seen about Hibiscus plants. I was recently introduced to this plant by a relative who showed me a smaller "Fruit Punch" that she had purchased at Home Depot, I have since purchased the same and moved them over to a 2.5 quart planter. After watching your video I now see that I made a mistake repotting to 2.5 quart planter even though through pure luck they both have adapted well. I am glad I watched this video because the Los Angeles nights are dipping to low 40s where they been living so I immediately brought them inside. Thanks again and continued success!!!.

Wow great video I've grown plants most of my life . I've got some really huge ones but I had no idea about hibiscus. I just bought two of them. For a spot i head .But I don't think it's going to work now after watching this video so thank you for your information I would have hated to have lost them.

Braided I’m assuming is your trunk! All that means is a few hibiscus were woven together and are grown as trees. Here in Florida these r very common here
Purchased two braided hibiscus from Kroger about three ft tall and both were doing good on my balcony for three weeks until I used miracle grow liquid fertilizer. The next day all the leaves fell off both of them.
I have a hibiscus. It belonged to my grandma and I took it on after she died. It only blooms in October now (when my grandma died), and although a lot of new growth, I’ve not really known what I’m doing. This video is super helpful- so much clear, simple and easy to understand information. Thankyou so much. I hope now I’m armed with knowledge I can get her super bushy and blooming loads like when my grandma was alive- not just one or two blooms like she does now she’s in my care (I do my best, but there’s still so much to learn!). I only trimmed my hibiscus this spring- for the first time in 3 years! So hoping that’ll help her get a bit bushier!

Love your channel! The first thing I propagated successfully was a hibiscus from a woody stem! I also scraped off some of the bark and use rooting hormone! The only thing I haven’t been able to successfully propagate is roses of any type

I propagated 10 brown stems containing nodes from my tropical hibiscus in the spring, and I got back 6 new plants from them. I just don’t know what I’ll do with them all now. My original hibiscus has grown so much, and I live in Tennessee so it comes inside this summer. Thanks for mentioning if plants are toxic to dogs and cats. I always have to look it up. People give me plant some what frequently, because they don’t know how to take care of them or they don’t want to. I’ve got 2 beautiful Peace Lillies that I have to make sure to keep the door closed to the room they’re in. Thanks for all the advice. I’ve had my hibiscus for 3 years now, it was a gift and it’s sentimental. I still need all the help I can get, flowering mostly.
I’ve got soooo many hibiscus props right now it’s not even funny, lol. I’ve sold one as part of my plants I’m selling to benefit a local nonprofit here. Flowering is more difficult when they have to live inside during the summer unfortunately. Proper fertilization, a southern facing window, and proper pruning are going to be your best bet for getting flowers indoors💚

Hibiscus has a big appetite for sunshine and water.
As u can see she has no flowers and no buds. It should be FULL OF FLOWERS AND BUDS. These do NOT GROW INDOORS WEELL. well the plant as shown does, but they r usually bought for their various colored flowers. They bloom continuously! Living in Florida they r everywhere!! Just dig a big kinda deep hole larger then container, put potting soil in hole about 1/2 way, add a little water, insert plant, add more planting soil to top, water thoroughly!! I live in Florida so use soil added because I’ve had better luck then just the sand. But u can plant directly in sandy ground!
Recently learned that Hibiscus plants are moderately tolerant of salt. Maybe making it a moderate halophyte? On a side note, if you want to grow an interesting plant try a mangrove tree.

I took two beautiful tropical hibiscus trees inside and they are alive- but struggling. Im hoping they will come back to life once the days get longer. She’s alive- but she looks sad. She keeps blooming though! We have been surprised by how many flowers she keeps producing! I didn’t expect that at all!

Thank you! I just use 1/8 tsp of the liquid fertilizer I use in my watering can (which holds 7-1/2 cups of water) every two weeks.

I just purchased a pot of 4 hibiscus planted together, all grown into the "tree" form, and their stems are braided together. I love it. They're all tropical Hibiscus with varying flower colors, but I was just wondering if you feel like that'll cause issues in the future? If I keep it fertilized enough and watered, they shouldn't compete with each other and choke each other out, right?

It just depends on the environmental conditions. In Hawaii (ideal conditions) I’ve seen them in bloom for a full week. Here in Texas it really just depends on how hot it is. With the nonstop triple digit heat and several months of no rain and water restrictions all the flowering plants are struggling here right now. But thankfully it finally did rain last night!

My only disagreement is when you said that the Rose of Sharon is toxic to humans. It's not! Maybe you have a different "Rose of Sharon" in Hawaii. Here in Illinois, ours is edible.

I am so happy saw your video, I love hibiscus.I had 2 last year .It bloom in Sumer when I put out side ,take into the house in winter and both died.I buy 4 plants this year hopefully doing better after I see your video.How often we water and fertilizer in winter? Hope to hear from u.
So happy to help! I fertilize once per month in the winter and I still just water as often as the plant needs it. For my personal environment, it usually takes the plant a little bit longer to use up the water in the winter so like maybe one to 3 days longer. But I always just check to see how dry the soil is before I water, or if the leaves start drooping I definitely know I need to water.

When you water. How much water do you put on the base of the plant. A cup? A glass? A pitcher?? What amount of water would be helpful. Thanks
I have a tropical hibiscus in a terracotta pot. I brought it inside last winter and it survived fine. The plant is about 4 feet tall now and I’m going to bring it inside soon. Should I prune it back some now or wait until the spring after I take it outside again? Also last winter I misted the foliage light every day which it seem to like plus lightly watered about once every 10 days. Am I doing it correctly? Thanks for your excellent tutorial. Sam.
If that’s what you did last winter and the plant did well, then I don’t see any reason to change anything. You can prune it back slightly right now, but you wouldn’t want to take it way back. You’ll want to wait until the spring time to do that.
The hibiscus we buy here are generally only one stem with leaves and a couple buds on top. Will it bush out normally or should I chop off the top to encourage new stems? Thank you.
It will branch on its own over time if you don’t want to cut it.

Question: 4 are more up right but one does not have a clear upright pattern (it is a bit more spread out). I heard you should pick plants with an upright growth pattern. Do you think I’ll be OK or should I look to replace that one?
All hibiscus have an upright growth pattern. My guess is the plant in question is less mature and thus less bushy than the others, but with proper pruning and time it will look like the others💚

Without seeing the actual plant and knowing all the circumstances, my initial thoughts would be either overwatering or underwatering or just leaves reaching the natural end of their leaf lifecycle. If it’s underwatering the leaves would be turning yellow and then crisping up. Overwatering typically leads to yellowing followed by browning and the leaves getting softer/mushy. But once again, could just be natural leaf loss (which will actually look like the underwatering situation I just described). Mine probably loses like 10 leaves a week just naturally but she pumps out way more new leaves than that per week too so I don’t worry about cause I know I’m not overwatering or underwatering her. Hope this helps!

@@WAXMAN1913 happened to my new ones as well. Got them on clearance at the HD, yellow soft leaves with brown spots at the bottom. My guess is the garden center clerks overrated them too much without knowing.
My plants are turning yellow and dripping leaves. They’re getting about 2-4 flowers a week but I think it was getting too hot and direct sunlight till about 1 pm.
I have just purchased a small hibiscus the same as yours and it is in bloom already and looked good in the garden center, but now the flowers are getting brown spots on them. Is that just spent blooms or is there something wrong?

Personally I would, but they both like to be kept a bit on the moist side so not absolutely necessary to remove them from a watering standpoint.

I love this video, it has a lot of info... My question is after I planted my 2 Tropical Hibiscus outside in the ground (Birmingham, Alabama Home) both producing beautiful red flowers, and adding Miracle Grow plant soil with the dirt all is well with both plants until the temperature went down in the higher 50s and some nights 60 the leaves have been turning yellow so my question will the winter months kill both plants or could I save them. I just bought 1 Hady Hibiscus a day ago and should I do up one of the Tropical Hibiscus PLANTS AND PLANT THE HARDY ONE OR WAIT UNTIL OR A LITTLE BEFORE SPRING? Thanks for ANY HELP.

@@ndhudecz Unfortunately, that is going to be too cold a zone for tropical hibiscus in the winter. You could put them in pots outside so you can move them indoors when it gets too cold if you want.

Hello I have tropical hibiscus inside in large pots and hardy hibiscus outside on the side of my house. The outside ones are doing great it seems. But the inside poted ones not so much. I have tried plant food, fertilizer, making sure they have good light and they sill have yellow leaves. The one is like a tree and though it has a lot of yellow leaves it's blooming a lot still. The other one is a twisted tree and that one we did find spider mites on. We were able to take care of that and seems to be getting new growth. My question is, why the yellow leaves? Am I watering to much? Also, is there anything else I can do?
Some yellow leaves is normal as leaves regularly die off from old age. Mine drops probably at least 10 old leaves a week. If it’s not an excessive number to the point it’s starting to look bald and as long as it’s also still putting out healthy new growth then you should be fine💚
I need some help with my Hibiscus! I noticed that it is not growing full at all and it has different shapes of leaves on it. It hasnt bloomed in about 7 years. Some of the leaves are the beautiful tear drop shape and others have like a 3 point shape. It is indoor and it is very leggy. I was able to propagate a few clippings which i will be potting closer to spring and are doing great with the tear drop shape leaves. I am just not sure what I can do anymore. I play all my plants spa music and water them when needed. The only thing I have not done if use feritlizer and I have not moved the hibiscus in question into a bigger pot as it would be too large for me to move. What can I do? It is a very special plant and the longest one Ive had I dont want to lose it!
Having different shaped leaves on a hibiscus is not abnormal. What kind of light do you have it in? DEFINITELY start fertilizing. Also, how long has it been since you repotted it?
hello great video! hope you can help me. my tropical hibiscus is infested with what i believe are aphids. they are stuck on the blooms and surrounding areas and when the blooms drop it makes the floor sticky. so i suspect they are attracted to its sap? it is currently winter here (NJ zone 7a) and too cold to take her outside to get a good hosing (our water is shut off for winter as well). i contemplated pruning her even if it means cutting off developing blooms because i think it is the only way i can get rid of the bugs for now :( do you think it is ok to do this? will it affect her growth later on or will she eventually bounce back? this july will be 4 yrs since we've had her.

How big of a pot should you use?
You want to use one that is only slightly bigger than the root ball currently is, so like about 2 inches bigger all the way around

My hibiscus was full like yours when my son gave it to me for mothers day. It has now lost a lot of it's leaves. I have repoted it and it is now looking like it is dieing. What can I do to bring it back. It lives in my home
Hi, can you give me some more details please? Is it directly in front of a window and what direction does that window face? Was it root bound when you repotted it? Did you check thoroughly for any pests?

@@stitISH probably not. Most woody stemmed plants typically don’t do well with hydroponics of any kind.
I feel like mines getting too much water???? It’s leaves are curling, but it’s budding and has grown alot since the last time I pruned, and I also I have it in one of those large black slotted pots for extra drainage so maybe I’ll let her dry out fully, I have hibiscus/palm fertilizer that’s granulated
They typically like to be kept a bit more on the moist side. Mine droops drastically when she’s thirsty though so I know real fast if I’ve let her dry out too much.
I killed mine by overwatering it.😢
A friend of mine didn't have room to bring his in for the winter, so I watched them for him (@ my workplace [amazing boss!]). He still came in to do the watering. They started dropping, even losing leaves. When he cut back on the water, they recovered.
Hi! I was just gifted a Hibiscus Tree today and need help. The temperature has dropped to 32 degrees here in Minneapolis/Saint Paul area. Tree is looking dried up and saggy leaves. It’s in a plastic pot. Do I prune it? It also has a braided tree trunk.
Hi there, unfortunately they don’t do well below 65 degrees Fahrenheit and they definitely won’t survive a freeze. Get it indoors and warm again and see if anything changes but there’s a good chance it has died😢

@@kaecmonnowson9957 Sorry I got a little confused, so was it outside in 32 degrees? If not what’s the coldest it’s been exposed to in your house? If it’s not cold damage then what you’re describing sounds like it is just thirsty, unless you had recently watered it.

The plant i have looses its buds before opening. They fall off after few days, without opening!!!
Usually that’s the result of letting the plant dry out too much, too high of temperature, too low of humidity, or some combination of the three.
I used the wrong number for fertilizer but shes outside so i blanched it 😐

@@AlohaPlantLife Tropical Hibiscus received as a gift in May. Don’t really well until we brought inside. Still in original pot, keeping moist. Leaves dry out and fall off, they do not change color? Hope this helps.

@@wilmaluth6256 What direction does the window face? They prefer full sun so southern window if you’re in the northern hemisphere would be best
Hibiscus inside or out
Depends on the type of hibiscus and your growing zone. Hardy Hibiscus can grow outside year around in most zones. Tropical hibiscus can grow outside year around only in a few zones way way south (if we’re talking Northern Hemisphere). So for example, I could have my hibiscus which is tropical outside for a few months in the spring and a few months in the fall but I have to move it inside during the rest of the year.

Can you give a little more info please? What kind of lighting is the plant in, are you sure you haven’t underwatered or overwatered, was the plant fine before and this just started happening out of nowhere, and is the plant still putting out new growth?

First of all, this is just plain rude of you. Secondly, if you’ve watched enough videos on my channel, you will know I have a neurological condition called essential tremors. It has absolutely nothing to do with a vitamin deficiency or alcohol consumption. It’s something I was born with. I suggest you think twice before jumping to conclusions and commenting on peoples health in the future.
This is funny! IT HAS NO FLOWERS… IT SHOULD,!!! At all times, tons of buds too. I live in Florida and these r EVERYWHERE!!! They thrive in HOT HUMID CONDITIONS! I can’t imagine growing this indoors. Yours has no flowers! It should ALWAYS have flowers on them. Tons of buds and all times. I’m sorry I know u think u know about this plant but living in south Florida we know our tropical plants, like many northerners usually own more about plants or flowers that can’t grow here in Florida. Also, why does EVERYONE say to use such complicated soils, mixing this, mixing that… no u don’t! Just plant them in potting soil, that’s it! To many videos actually make it to much for a beginner. This is very easy to grow, especially in hot climates of southern states. Don’t make things so difficult, to many TH-camrs do this! Mildew however is common! It’s common to get black spots. Just remove foliage! Or prune a little bit. Because all these diseases are usually on the ground and stems. Just adding info for other viewers so they know, ur making this more difficult then it is. But your plant is beautiful but not right!! It should always be in bloom with tons of buds!
Not everyone’s environments and experiences are the same nor are all hibiscus. It’s not high humidity where I live at all so my plant will have a different experience than yours
I agree. She's growing just a green bush when it's supposed to be a FLOWERING bush. And she's telling everybody that hibiscus doesn't like hot! EXCUSE ME!? Why do they grow so nicely in Florida then? In full sun? No, she knows absolutely nothing about hibiscus!
@@markkozdroj9778 the particular hibiscus that I grow doesn’t like 110° heat in direct sun. Does yours get 110° heat in direct sun and is it the exact same hibiscus as mine? Once again, not everybody’s conditions are the same and “hot” can be a broad range of temperatures. My hibiscus is also anything but all green if you watched the video. Her leaves are white pink and green.
