Optician here. An important factor to keep in mind is certain high quality AR coatings like Crizal Sapphire UV or Crizal Sunshield (for sunglasses) prevent UV back reflections on your lens. Polycarbonate will block 100% of UV from passing through the lens but what people dont realize is that up to 50% of ambient UV light can actually hit the back of your lens and reflect into your (now more dilated if wearing sunglasses) eye. Cheap AR coatings have actually shown in studies to reflect more than uncoated lenses. If you are buying sunglasses primarily for UV protection then a backside coating like Crizal Sunshield UV is basically a must have.
It really isn't worth it from a Cost/Benefit perspective. The longevity problems are not gone AT ALL. Even with excellent care you'll find these form 'crazing' problems. No matter how good you take care of them! End of the line : Opticians sell double the amount of glasses because of quality issues and they're laughing all the way to the bank, togheter with the lens manifacturers. Sure they'll try to convince people quality improved, well... it has not improved enough! Case in point : most AR coated glasses don't come with a warranty, and those that DO have a warranty of 2 year! And trust me, 2 years is the best you can get out of these. Don't do AR, don't let opticians convince you that you need this abomination. And if they won't give you the option to go WITHOUT AR : Buy Online where YOU select your lenses!

From a personal standpoint, and as a practicing optician for 15 yrs, i'll say that there are few lens applications and/or coatings that i personally believe are as or more important than an Anti Reflective coating. It is the first thing opticians notice when looking at a lens from both a wearer as well as an onlookers perspective. While some people are indifferent to the amount of glare or reflection on their lenses, many are highly sensitive to the eyestrain and fatigue it may cause especially with extended wear time. Imagine doing half a push up, then holding it for as long as you can. Your muscles would get pretty tired pretty quick. This is similar to what some people's eyes are doing without an AR coating applied to their lenses. Other benefits include reducing Halo effect caused by oncoming headlights when driving at night, reducing fatigue when viewing screens for long periods of time, and (from an aesthetic standpoint) having the abillity to see one's eyes in pictures without heavy reflectivity. As for the life of the coating, that comes down to general care combined with the quality of the lab producing the lens. Fortunately SportRx gives you the option of adding AR to any lens, clear or tinted. Hope this helps some!
So the cost of mine would be 169.00 is that a deal? I only have issues with nite time driving. I take scratch resistant. I don’t really do that much nighttime driving.

As long as you're ordering from a reputable optical supply (did someone say SportRx??) then you should be covered under warranty for something like that. There are a lot of lens manufacturing labs out there and they are definitely not all created equal! Do your due diligence to be sure that you are getting work done at a lab that doesn't cheap out on their lab techs (did someone say SportRx??) because it makes a huge difference in reliable/consistent quality. In my opinion, it's an open question if AR coatings are worth it. They tend to be grease magnets; they will always be dirty. They can also be extremely fragile: I got a pair of AR glasses (not top of the line AR), and it started to wear off the same day! Guess they shouldn't have included that little cloth in my glasses case, because it took the coating right off. Before that, I had a pair with top of the line Crizal AR and "diamond" antiscratch coatings ($$$), and the coatings lasted a year. Coatings generally are overpriced and underperform.

The life of a coating depends on the level of quality and maintenance. Many AR coatings can last years if properly cared for, and most brands offer some type of warranty as well. It's especially beneficial for people with light sensitivity that strain their eyes to fight to see past the reflective sheen, but others get by without it no problem!

Absolutely! Yes, you are correct, there is still glare bouncing off of my lenses. Unfortunately, there is not a coating available that cuts glare down to zero, but it certainly helps. Different anti-reflective coating manufacturers approach it differently in terms of what color/hue that you may see when you do see that glare including green, gold, blue, etc. While it doesn't cut that glare 100%, especially under such bright lights as I am in here, it still makes a considerable difference in optical clarity/quality. Having oleophobic properties can make a big difference when it comes to everyday care of your lenses. While it may not affect anything optically, it will make you life better with it!

Oh, no! It sounds like you may have a problem with your coating. It very well may be crazing, which is like a fine spider webbing cracks in the coating. If you got those from us, then we can take care of it! I would not recommend writing off all AR coatings because it can make a big difference and not all AR coatings are created equal!

Bad batches are uncommon, but not impossible. As long as you're ordering from a reputable optical supply (did someone say SportRx??) then you should be covered under warranty for something like that. Regular glasses would be foggy a lot in a cold environment or with your mask on always
