    I'm surprised you did not mention ghost lights. My first glasses did not have an AR coating, and at night, bright lights would be reflected back into my eyes from various angles so that I would see many more lights than there actually were. This made night driving very difficult and confusing-especially in unfamiliar areas. AR coated glasses eliminated this completely. For me, this was a safety issue. Cheers, Russ

    Loved the video…I feel we’re taken advantage of a lot when buying lenses and especially lens coating “options” when buying glasses from your typical
    Omnivision etc. businesses. Man they hit me with over 300.00 purely for lens
    “options” and I’m really relying on your videos to get to the bottom of this….my prescription is very slight and it’s time we educate ourselves on eye lens function,features, prices, and brands also the difference between necessity and pushy sales tactics..we need to know especially because your vision is not only the most important of your 5 senses but the windows to the soul.

  • @truthmerchant1

    Another really important advantage of an anti-reflective coating is if you have a high prescription. It eliminates the 'coke bottle' effect (where there appears to be concentric rings in the lenses).

    I was told that the coating does deteriorate though from salt water or from stronger cleaning chemicals withch will leave you with ruined lenses. Thus if your the type to always wear glasses even while in the water or you work with cleaning chemicals that might splash now and then you might want to pass on the coating

    I've been wearing coated lenses for over thirty years. Not all coatings are created equal. The same applies to AR coatings. Like tyres (tires for USA), you generally get what you pay for. I've worn many brands; - eg. Hoya, Kodak, Rodenstock, Carl Zeiss. In general higher market lenses are coated at the factory. This gives a more consistent and usually much more durable finished result compared with those lenses coated at the lab where they're fitted into the frames.
    I'm currently wearing Carl Zeiss Progressive Precison Superb, 1.67 index and Zeiss' Lotutec coatings. My wife has same lenses but the Zeiss Duravision Platinum coating. This is more expensive product than Lotutec but it's a b*****d to keep clean. Lotutec, meanwhile, is extremely hyrophobic and oleophobic. Dirt almost falls of 'em.
    In short, I wholly recommend AR coatings to anyone. Buy a couple of large microfiber lens towels, keep the towels clean, don't scrub at the lenses and you'll experience no problems. If they're filthy then dilute dish washing soap and a rinse under the tap before cleaning will prevent damage to the coatings.

When coming back onto the salesfloor from the stockroom my glasses fog up. The fog has wedged itself in between the lens and the AR coating and isn't able to be cleaned according to the eyglasses store I purchased them from. I believe AR coating is NOT worth it. Now the lenses also look scratched. The store I bought them at should replace my lenses for free because I was never informed of this happening. Never ever get AR coating on glasses period!

    I'm a professional driver and can't see at night...I thought it was my eyes, now I think it's my glasses!
    Unfortunately my insurance only covers the absolute very bare minimum. I think this is causing my eyesight to be worse!
    I have to tilt my head up to see while driving at night and everything is still super blurry, etc. Can't read signs, can't read addresses... but fine during the day. Also I'm constantly taking my glasses off to read anything or look at things close up, or else it's super blurry. I can't see anything at all driving without them though, so it's required.
    Also I clean them, blink, and they're all smudged again.

    Reflective coating was discovered by Lord Rayleigh who when investigating the effects of lens smudging found that it actually made the lens better. Ideally the thickness of the coating should be one wavelength. I recently got my new spectacles coated and when I asked the technician how he got it one wavelength thick he answered oh we just stick it in the dye.

      Most sunglasses do not have anti reflective on the front or back surfaces of the lenses, but higher quality sunlenses have the coating on the back side.
      Most coatings do not have a specific color for you to choose from, it depends on the company/product you are purchasing as different companies may have their own formula. My favorite right now is the Crizal Saphire 360, which has very little reflection at all. but seems like a faint light blue.

    I got a 2 for 1 deal, a pair of normal glasses and a pair of sunglasses for a pretty good price but then I had to add the price of the AR coating on the normal ones and even more money to get the sunglasses polarized. My first prescription glasses so I'm new to this! Glad to get an explanation, I'm glad I paid the extra now.

    Coatings are a scam. They scratch more easily than in the past (especially the glass lenses) and sometimes cost more than the lenses. There are so many complaints on the internet about these coatings that I think there needs to be an investigation of this industry.

    I hate anti-reflective coatings. Sure, they reduce glare, but they not only smudge super easily, but they attract dust and lint, and above all, scratch at the slightest touch. Seriously, I can use a microfiber cloth after wetting the lens with the eyeglass cleaning fluid given to me by the same store I got my glasses, and I will ALWAYS have at LEAST one new scratch by the time I'm done. Normally I get about 2 to 5 scratches each time. Add in the tiny spot-like pock marks that seem to appear, and anti-reflective coating isn't worth all the hassle. I'd rather deal with some glare than have to replace my glasses in six months because they're scratched up so badly I can't even use them.

  • @kt2186

    could i get both anti glare and anti reflective on my glasses??

  • @nobodyhere4667
    @nobodyhere4667 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Anti-reflective seems like the one thing I really want from glasses besides the correction. I hate shopping and fashion and glasses don't offer the options I want to see. I don't want a Nike swhoosh or a DG on my glasses but why not a range finder, motion tracker and/or some sort of augmented information system over the non-dominant eye? These are the upgrades we were promised in the 1980's lol.
    I recently learned that all my transition lens glasses are a pain if you are training to be a drone pilot. The sun and the glare from the snow turns my glasses into sunglasses and I always loved it. I honestly rarely noticed when they darkened unless I took my glasses off. Now I find myself trying to read a LCD, maintain a Visual Line of Sight with an aircraft and anything I need to see in-between. I am near-sighted so I have managed by bringing my glasses to the end of my nose and looking over them when I need to. I had my eyes checked today and was quickly overwhelmed with the wall of frames and no real help. I left with nothing but the exam and came home to research. I don't think Blue Light will help with how I use a computer screen outside, transitions is out, so I think just the non reflective, the anti-UV coating on both sides is about for usefulness for me.
    Will the more expensive lens improve clarity/sharpness more than the C-95 (number might be off, srry) or is it more about durability?
    Anti-Reflective is the only other improvement I can think of, to help with being outdoor in lots of sunshine and using LCD displays unless you have any other suggestions?
    Strange question for a very niche market.

    What's often omitted are the disadvantages. An AR coat wears fast, after 2 years the 'craze' is so bad you'll want new glasses. In the vid it's claimed that the newer types don't do this but it is then very important to get that type of AR coating! Otherwise, stay away from AR if you have the choice (higher index glasses come with AR whether you like it or not). Under +/-3 you don't need high index (=thinner) glasses. Be aware. Index 1.74 is really only necessarry from +/- 10. Opticiens tend to oversell : 1.74 or 1.67 is far more expensive, and not necessary for most people.

    • @catbirdler
      @catbirdler ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not necessarily true. My prescription is -6.75 and I've always used high index lenses. It gives you much more flexibility in choice of frames, for example, being able to use a thin metal frame (rather than thicker plastic) which wouldn't work well with a regular lens. Especially for nearsightedness, it means less lens sticking out of the frame at the sides and less bulk overall.

      @@DoctorEyeHealth No. I'm going on the 30th because they require full payment. When I joined the military the optometrist in Fort Riley prescribed it because my left eye at times would unfocus (turn in then out). I had my eye numbed and moved manually to see if there was a problem with the muscle. I can give you many suggestions for future videos. Here's one. I read better without my glasses than with the progressives which I have to look down to read. Another topic high definition lenses. I would appreciate your advise especially since the glasses is costing me $820 BOGO.

When I went and I got glasses also they suggested an anti glare coating, I wish I would’ve gotten it. I’ll just have to spring for next time. It’s more money but it’s totally worth it right now.
