Chris Watts killed his pregnant wife and two young daughters in order to clear the way for a new relationship with a younger woman. As the investigation continued, it became clear that Watts had put in large amounts of consideration to the murders. He sent texts to imply his innocence, invited interviews, and willingly took a polygraph test. However, he eventually cracked thanks to some excellent interrogation work and is now serving his sentence. I decided to turn my skill set towards this case to show what a nonverbal analyst’s point of view would be in this specific instance, pointing out tells of stress and nonverbal misalignment throughout the entire documentary. I’m no body language expert, but the most telling sign in these clips is the fact that the man didn’t shed a tear or show any emotion until he realized they had him. His only regret/remorse was for himself.

When he first mentions that his daughters were dead he had absolutely no emotion and that seems like the most emotional part of all. He never mentions his unborn child at all either. Even if the wife had smothered the daughters, wouldn't most people still be concerned enough about the unborn child to like, not murder the mother in revenge??
Yeah, he had a ton of tells. Wasn't panicked and didn't follow up on the pool suggestion, texting instead of calling, saying he couldn't access the bank account or bother driving there, and of course watching the video tape at the neighbors. But you're right, what I'm sure made them go from 95% to 100% convinced was he stunning lack of emotion. And he also said he got a few hours sleep ... What normal human could even sit down for a second, let alone sleep when their pregnant wife and two young daughters are missing?
Maybe not. Some people act completely differently in front of people and by themselves and in private. You can teach yourself to not show emotions In front of people and there's several advantages to doing so.
@@adameins5622 that makes no sense. his wife and daughters were missing ... Why would he purposely act calm? He obviously would've got caught regardless, but if there was ever a time NOT to control your emotions, that was the time. Nothing advantageous about acting calm in that situation.
You just got to admire how good these people are at their jobs. Imagine sitting in a room alone with a guy who killed their wife and kids and just patting them on the back. I mean I would pat this guy on the back too. Just really hard. With a chair.

I disagree. They manipulate and lie to people and use junk science to send people to prison. Yeah he's garbage but the tactics are disgusting. It should disturb you that they used junk science like a lie detector test and made him think he was under arrest or detained already without a lawyer because a lot of people do prison time for false confessions and junk science like this, bite Mark, tire tracks, shoe prints...they should be required to say you should have a lawyer in every single homicide case.

The woman detective in an interview was crying while speaking about this case. She is a very rare combination of professionalism and compassion. I can’t praise her enough for the job she did here. Whatever she’s getting paid simply isn’t enough. Good job detective I salute you a thousand times!
I could never have that job. Sitting in a room calmly speaking with a monster like that. Nope. Couldn't do it. I actually hate how everyone was so soft with him.

She did a great job. She knew when to pretend to console and understand him, and when to dial up the pressure. Very well done.
I also thought she was brave as hell for just straight shooting those three questions at him while alone in that room; a cornered beast can strike out. I feel like when she left the room she went out and had her own panic reaction... but then she comes right back in like a boss and lets him know he was lying. Bravery!
Tammy said the reason she was rubbing his back was because she could see he was visually uncomfortable with being touched. So she leaned into it.

@ the idea is to play it off he’s innocent if his wife and kids actually got killed by someone else, many people would be receptive to that level of comfort because at that point your whole life/world is shattered
They're on par with the investigator that sat through listening to the teenager who slaughtered his entire family "uh huh, I see" like it's no big deal

Yes, I agree. I remember watching that very first interview with him outside his house & thinking he was SO clear it was him right from the get-go!! I live in the UK but remember it SO clearly just because of the details & how he killed his entire family, little girls & unborn baby included in that.fact. I then followed the case through YT & then very many great videos available.
Oh totally agree! I followed Frankie (her brother) first to watch for updates on their disappearance but as soon as the interview aired and Chris was shifting back n forth on his feet, not showing distress, arms crossed, and SMILING... yeah I knew.
I agree 100% I remember seeing him on the news with his interview and said to myself, "something's not right about him and what he is saying/how hes saying it." Like why are you smiling??

He probably was trying to separate them from himself so he didn’t feel guilty but that was incredibly messed up. It’s terrifying anyone could do that to their own children.

He's seriously the worst.
The guys that pulled those babies from the oil tanks ended up with PTSD and needed counseling. And some of these investigators retired because this case screwed with their heads so bad.
@Connie Is Here that is a really fucked up thing to say. You have no idea the state that they were in and have no right to belittle anyone from getting traumatised in any circumstance. I hope nothing traumatising will ever happen to you if you think that badly about people affected by PTSD.
I'm sure you would be traumatized as well having to pull two toddler size children out of crude oil tanks & if you weren't then you have no heart at all. Cece's hand degloved & they had to pick her tiny hand up out of oil after getting her out. I don't think I would ever be able to recover from seeing that, seeing two innocent little girls in their sweet little night gowns dead & covered in oil. Then, having to dig up & recover Shanann who had a coffin birth with a badly decomposed fetus hanging out of her, it's just absolutely heart shattering to even have to think about.. much less actually witness. Jfc.

@Isabella B That is where you are mistaken - most people will fall for it, unless prepared in advance. If you are in his shoes most likely you will fall for it as with all this psychological pressure that seems like an opportunity for escape and relief.
Omg- it's a tactic that they use all the time to get a confession from someone they know is guilty. What they are doing is giving them an out by victim blaming and minimizing the suspects actions as much as possible in order to coax a partial confession. They are trained for this.

They knew he was the main suspect in the first interview. The first interview had raised their suspicions to the way he was acting. Coder had requested his phone in the first interview. From that moment, they knew he had a mistress.
CW's was followed by unmarked officers to observe him.
The second interview was designed to extract the confession, not whether he was guilty or innocent.
With so much circumstantial evidence against him, this was a foregone conclusion.
That polygraph examiner needs a damn raise! She sat in a room with this dude alone and her interrogation tactic is genius. Smart lady!

I think he was so narcissistic that he thought he would be believed and could beat the lie detector. And he probably thought not asking for a lawyer would make him look more innocent to the police. But he was aware that he could ask for lawyer, because he had his Miranda Rights read to him before the polygraph test.

I think it would be fascinating if you did some videos of people who were accused of crimes that they didn't actually commit. That way a comparison could be made to all the people who are guilty. I think the contrast would be interesting and informative. I know this is mostly centered around crime but I personally enjoy the analysis more than the dark criminal aspect. So, I also think it would be interesting to see some scenes with actors, either in interviews or film roles, and to spot the inconsistencies in their facial expressions for something a bit lighter.

I will never stop praising Nicole (Shannan’s friend, not Chris’ mistress) and the next door neighbour. They were so instrumental in this case. The lie detector lady was also amazing, those long silent pauses 👌🏽

Why would she suddenly change the password on her phone. Chris had that phone. Had he gained access. He might had impersonated his wife enough. To convince N. A. not to come over that afternoon. Had it gone that way. Chris would of had the time to make it look as if Shanann had just run.off with her kids. We could still be thinking of this as just a missing persons case.

She replied and said If they ever wanted to go into law enforcement, she would be glad to mentor my daughter's. We were also going to see our family in CO my husband's family. I'm thinking at the time they could have been looking on youtube? Remember that interview they did to talk to him and he gave his 2nd confession from Dodge correctional. They said did you know that people on youtube think we should go after NK. I'm speculating that's why she knew about it. It happened after the hln special.

Not a word about Shannan, no empathy for her family. Watch it and ask yourself if you can imagine any normal person acting like they did in the trial after your little grandchildren were murdered. All while Shannan's family was listening man. It's pretty sick if you ask me, and there has to be something wrong with them.
I noticed that Tammy is wearing prison stripes. Chris has very little in the room to look at other than prison stripes, bars. Subliminal messages. I also noticed that the male interrogator, when he says, "Chris. Stop.", sounds very much like a stern father figure, with lots of authority. They both frequently come across as "parental" authorities. And in turn, he responds to them as a teenager in big trouble with mom and dad.

Gotta love psychology.
By not allowing him to verbalize his excuses or refutes (I didn't do it, I don't know where they went, etc.) actually puts a ton of mental stress on the person. If you ever see an interrogation where the suspect is allowed to continuously refute the confrontation, they become almost energized, confidence is boosted, hope is back on the table, and mental barriers are reinforced....and they(detectives) have to work to get back to the psychological breakdown.
They did a fantastic job in this interrogation. I believe it was under 2 hours before he broke down and gave his 1st confession.
Yeah, good point! It was like tapping into his immaturity (which a murderer would have) and cornering him. But in a 'kind' way? What's that saying about catching more flies with honey? Lol

It’s interesting when Chris is speaking to his dad and he says “I came clean about *that*” referring to the affair implying he’s hiding something else.
Also, when he says “she smothered them” and his dad says “she smothered them?” he doesn’t outright say yes or nod or anything. He just says “they were blue”. Maybe inside he just can’t lie that much to someone he’s so close to.
So according to Chris, Shannan choked both girls so quick that he didn’t even stop it in time, imagine that, imagine the speed of Shannan’s killing, god it’s beyond words to describe how evil this man is, it’s one thing to murder and try to hide it, it’s quite another to blame it all on someone else who trusted him entirely.

I have a huge love of psychology and behaviors especially portaining to serious crime, especially but not limited to murder. But yea usually murder, only because its, if not the most, one of the most extreme human behaviors. Anyway it is absolutely astonishing how many many many MANY murderers do that very thing! U would think with them knowing they did this awful thing and knowing their entire life is literally at stake the logical thing to most ppl would be to protect yourself from being found out! No though they will like 85 to 90% or more of all the interviews I have watched not only do they not ask for a lawyer they seem to me to be the ones that will tolerate rigorous interrogation the longest! My first thought, and idk I havent researched it yet, is that they must do that because they arent telling the truth but trying to convince everyone they are telling the truth. So in their minds they think they will appear more innocent if they keep answering questions. Innocent ppl though actually get angry and will cooperate but get sick of it and will leave cause they know they didnt do it and dont want to or have to put up with it. Thats my opinion.
Also, if he lawyered up, he may get acquitted but he would look very suspicious to everyone and he wants everyone to think he's just a good guy.

I think there’s also the aspect of the father seeing his son as an extension of himself. If he blames the wife then it means the dad did nothing wrong with raising his son.
I have to argue that when he starts crying after confessing, it isn't because he feels remorse on what he did to his wife and kids, its because he knows that his lies are over and he is going to face the repercussions of what he did, its pure self pity, really disgusting.

The book about this case, something like My Daddy is My Hero, was one of the scariest things I've ever read. Mostly because Chris gave ZERO evidence to his wife that he was going to fuckin annihilate their family. She did EVERYTHING right. She communicated well, she paid attention to any red flags, she offered an easy out, and he slaughtered her anyway.
She threatened he'll never see his kids again and had already made plans for her friend Cassie and her boyfriend to move in Chris' house after he's gone (it's in their group chat the weekend before the murders).
She wanted the house and full custody but could afford neither so the plan was to kinda pool resources with friends until they all got out of debt.
This was the house that he had paid for all along because she couldn't qualify for a loan since selling her first house at a loss.
*Absolutely no reason to kill her, of course* but if I'll take the kids and leave you destitute were an easy way out, they would probably still be alive today.

He also refers to them as those kids, not my kids, showing a complete lack of attachment or urgency in their wellbeing.

While I do agree, the female detective fed that idea to him to get him to confess to something, so they could 'get a foot in the door' and get the full confession. So it was just a technique, and it did work. But the fact that he latched onto that, and thought that they would actually go with it, is quite despicable.
@@MystiDawn agree, once he went with that story he then had to tell them where the bodies were. I disagree with all the claims hes a classic narcissist that can lie with ease. If anything he is really stupid. Stupid for what he did rather than just walked away to start his new life, and the fact he thought everyone would buy his story they she left barefoot with the girls in their PJs without taking anything with them.

A lot of people criticized the investigators for seeming too chummy with Watts, but they had to make him comfortable. They don’t like him, but they had to pretend so that he would confess. I admire your consistent professionalism to say things like "I'm not saying he's a sociopath - I'm not a psychologist." It's enforces that such diagnosis are incredibly difficult and should be done by professionals. It's respect for the profession and respect for what is and isn't your field of expertise, despite how tiresome it must get to repeat such things a lot :) I like that.
As someone who is diagnosed with BPD and "sociopathic tendencies/traits" I extremely appreciate it too. I hate when people see someone do somthing wrong,whether it's just being a jerk or being a murderer, and immediately saying "omg you're such a sociopath/psycho" like... I dont kill people but thanks for making my condition stigmatized and basically untreatable or taken seriously...

As a mental health professional, and someone who grew up with a psychopathic brother, I think he is a narcissist, not a sociopath or psychopath. The way he breaks down crying isn't because he feels remorse but rather a display of self pity, which is a hallmark of narcissism. Most psychopaths, especially intelligent ones, have already weighed out the pros and cons before they act, and they don't have the typical fear mechanism. They've already considered the probability of getting caught and if they go through with an action, they've decided it's worth the risk. They usually don't fear a prison sentence. Narcs, on the other hand, think they're smarter than everyone else and truly believe they can't be caught so they don't factor in the risk of going to prison before acting. Sociopaths differ a little from the psychopath because they are more disorganized, impulsive, and struggle to control themselves. They're almost like a narcissist without a conscience and the reasoning of a 2 year old. Sociopaths are the ones who throw tantrums because they can't control their anger. If Chris were a psychopath, his actions to appear calm wouldn't be forced, such as controlling the way he takes long, slow, and controlled blinks, that calmness would be his baseline. Psychopaths don't fret and get nervous because they are the epitome of No Fuck$ Given. He's able to keep himself somewhat controlled and his prior behavior doesn't consist of the temper tantrums and overt shows of being a bad dude. Sociopaths cannot maintain close relationships over the long term without their mask slipping, so they often change friend groups frequently. They don't have the control over their mask that a psychopath has. Chris had stable relationships without being tagged as someone to stay away from. He fits the bill for a narcissist. Narcs often struggle with empathy and remorse, but they are capable of feeling them. The issue with narcs is that all empathy goes out the window when they want something and nothing is ever their fault. Chris blames Shanann and the kids for tying him down and being unable to live a carefree life with his side chick. That's pure narcissism. Also thinking he'd beat the polygraph is typical narc thinking. He felt entitled to taking their lives because they got in his way. Psychopaths and sociopaths would have walked out the door and forgotten their family existed, but a narc will kill their family because how dare the family get in their way and take their money (support/alimony) A narc can't stand for that. I hope this very brief rundown helps. If anyone has more questions or would like to discuss it more, feel free!

Could you please define “mental health professional”? As a provisionally licensed psychologist with a specialization in forensics I find it incredibly difficult to make such a definitive diagnosis of someone I’ve never met, spoken to or gotten significant collateral sources of information about. When discussing clinical mental health conditions, the DSM5 defines Narcissistic personality disorder as a life-long pattern of exaggerated feelings of self-importance and excessive need for admiration. Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) [which can only be diagnosed in adulthood] is a defined as a life-long pattern of limited empathy and disregard for the violation of the rights of others. It has been referred to as Sociopathy in the past but that term is both informal and outdated. The paediatric diagnosis most similar to ASPD is Conduct disorder. As for Psychopathy, while not a DSM recognized disorder it’s often associated with ASPD. The tests for psychopathy are often more related to the behavioural aspects of ASPD, such as criminality. If you feel interested in learning more about psychopathy I recommend reading ‘Without a conscience’ by Dr Robert Hare. In the end every person is different. How they display or manifest symptoms of a disorder will vary greatly. And that’s not even mentioning the comorbidity of other conditions. This is why licensed clinical psychologists don’t make videos or posts diagnosing people. It’s unethical and unreliable.
Living in Colorado, I can tell you, we all watched that initial interview he did and everyone I know described it as weird, and we all suspected something wasn't quite right, just with that interview. When it came out that he confessed, no one was shocked that he was guilty.

Anyone worth of being called a father anyways. Deadbeats need not being included. Regardless, even as just a dad to a 'fur baby' I get incredibly anxious if my cat disappears for too long and I can't find her. The agents wisely told Ron (Chris's dad) that Chris wanted to tell him (Ron) what happened to Shannan and the girls. Ron's questions to Chris focus on "what happened?"., no mention of " let's get outta here and get an attorney!". The agents set the stage for Chris to confess to his dad. Great interrogation.
Ron DID say they needed a lawyer or something. But the cops practically SPRINTED back into the room and manipulated him into 'forgetting' what his dad said. When I watched the documentary.... and heard him explain how it happened..... I bawled... I was nauseous! My husband had tears running down his face and was in absolute rage! I felt so sick hearing him describe his daughter beg him not to do it 😭😡 I could temper he was guilty from the get go but it was so sickening and heartbreaking hearing how it ended for them.
I hate thinking about how afraid his two little girls were. They were probably so confused. Poor things. Bless their hearts ❤️

It's so reassuring to see people so good at their really damn hard jobs, makes me feel a little safer. Really fascinating work, on both the interrogators and your part, it's fantastic how a little detail can change.
There is a jailhouse interview they did with him after his convicted arrest. It chills me to my core that this guy was allowed to have children. In prison he doesn't even bother hiding it anymore. You can hear it in his voice. I'm super impressed by the woman who did the polygraph with him. She knew exactly the buttons to press to get the truth out. The father coming in just sealed his fate honestly. Very thorough breakdown right here; as is always the case.

Like, yeah, obviously with all the other evidence, this guy is a total shithead and is obviously guilty. Taking everything into consideration WITH the interview vids makes the interviews weird af, especially since he shows that he doesn't feel bad until he's caught. But, for other situations, sometimes people's brains literally can't process what's happened and so there's a kind of emotional "shut off" where sometimes people can seem emotionless and sometimes people will smile/laugh when being talked to because that's what people want to see most of the time. Like a conditioned reaction.

If you notice CW only talks about actions and never about feelings - he describes feeling as if he's read about them in a dictionary, similarly to when he googled how to tell someone he loved them as he apparently did when he was having an affair with NK. This is a sign of ASPD - at the moment, sociopathy isn't regarded as a clinical term, only psychopathy and ASPD is. I would err on the side of psychopathy because of his controlled behaviour and psychopaths tend to be organised and meticulous in many ways and CW doesn't understand empathy or genuine emotions, typical of psychopaths.

My Husband and I watched this last week and it was obvious from the start that he did it. Especially when his neighbor called the officer back to his house and said, something ain't right. He didn't want to say anything in front of Chris so he had the officer return later. Very classy and amazing move by that neighbor. How anyone could do such evil things to his children. Even when he said she just looked at me and said "daddy no please" I died a little inside because of the song she made up for him. It's just so evil.
Keep in mind, Chris LIED all the way along, in person or by phone. The girls were killed BEFORE Shanann came home from AZ. SHE never knew that, because Chris prevented her from going in their rooms to check on them, and Shanann was REAL tired at that hour. Not all that long afterwards, Chris killed Shanann. The girls bodies, and Shanann's body, were loaded into Chris's truck by Chris, then he drove the bodies to the oil site. It's the most horrific thing I have EVER heard of. I'll NEVER get over it.

He put them in his truck with his wife's body on the ground, with the two girls sitting over her trying to figure out what's going on
Brought them to the site, buried the wife with the girls in the car, then strangled them with their own blankets he had them bring
I remember seeing his interview live when they were first “missing”. My mom and I looked at each other and said “wow, he’s….off” and then felt guilty because this guys wife and kids were missing.
What an outcome.
The first impression typically never lies. But the guilty feeling is justified because most people would I think. Its also the politically correct stance to take. Innocent until proven otherwise is good and should be upheld but you can’t stop genuine human instincts.

She knew what she was doing as his demeanour was a dead giveaway and she wanted the world to see that. She is the one who right off knew something was wrong and called the police to do a well being check. What they found in that house and Watts demeanour made them suspicious enough to call in a detective. Also the police directed these media guys what to say to put pressure on Watts. To ask difficult questions, and at the end they asked if he had a mistress but that part was cut off for TV.

@@hellok7877 Yes I know, but when she got to the door and didn't hear the kids running around and they didn't come to the door her concern grew deeper. The cop when he arrived wondered the same thing, which is why he didn't leave, as I have seen them do in so many other cases. I saw cops leave an apartment building after neighbors reported a disturbance and screams inside but when they got there all was quiet so they left. Little did they know the woman inside was restrained and gagged and after they left she was stabbed to death........after having already been raped.
I felt like he was trying to hold his breath to try to trick test...but she caught it and told him to breathe

It hurts my stomach just thinking about what he did. To do this to any human is inconceivable let alone YOUR OWN CHILDREN?! Chris explained that Bella screamed "daddy no!" as he came toward her to kill her. I do not understand how he then killed her after hearing her little voice cry out like that. Chris Watts is a monster and I hope he spends every second of his life haunted by what he did.
When asked what he did with the bodies, he responds "They're not coming back" as if to suggest " what difference does it make? They're dead, let's just leave it be". Then he repeats Agent Coder's remark, "I don't want to leave them out there". The only emotion Chris shows is when 1. He didn't want NK brought into the situation and 2. When he thought his co-workers were going to be involved in the recovery. That was SELF-PITY NOT REMORSE. Chris has never shown REMORSE for his actions, only fear of consequences to his own reputation.

I think it's more likely that Chris has Narcissistic Personality Disorder rather than Antisocial Personality Disorder (what most people would call psychopathy). For context, I have a degree in Psychology. According to the DSM 5, the person needs to meet 5 of these criteria:
A grandiose sense of self-importance (we can see this from him immediately seeking out the opportunity to be interviewed by the media after his family's disappearance)
A preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love (his fixation on moving on to this supposedly ideal relationship with Nicole Kessinger)
A belief that he or she is special and unique (he is so confident in his special intellect that he believes he's at no risk of getting caught. This can be seen in him putting himself out there in the media mere hours after he murdered his family and by accepting the offer of a polygraph test)
A need for excessive admiration
A sense of entitlement (he felt entitled to take the lives of his children and his wife and entitled to shove aside his current life to be with Nicole Kessinger)
Interpersonally exploitive behavior
A lack of empathy (this is obviously applicable to him)
Envy of others or a belief that others are envious of him or her
A demonstration of arrogant and haughty behaviors or attitudes
All in all, he tallies up 5 of those criteria in my opinion.
A lot of people will automatically assume that a lack of empathy = psychopathy, but that condition is far more complex and there's not really much in his history that leads me to believe he would qualify as a psychopath under the Psychopathy Checklist developed by Dr. Robert Hare.
I feel so bad for his dad, he just found out his grandkids were no longer alive. Even if he at this point believed Chris didn’t do it- it’s still heartbreaking. Chris is a monster

@@factsmatter8667 the way they carefully worded everything they said to get him to break was sophisticated in my opinion. It takes intelligence to be able to read each specific person, without knowing much about them, and tailor your response as to not make them violent and uncooperative.

This case scares me so much, he was just a seemingly normal guy, a normal husband, but he was capable of this the whole time. Imagine living with someone like that and never knowing this about him. Sure, upon looking into things deeper there were signs of a troubled marriage but never that he would murder his wife and kids. How do you see that coming? We could all know a person like this in our lives and never know until they just snap.

While there may be truth in what u say, I think there is something else with Chris. While I don't remember exactly where I picked this up, but Chris lived a very sheltered life growing up. Sheltered in that his social life was almost nonexistent. He was into sports. He did not date at all in highschool, he had no experience with females. That is just not normal. From what I understood his first serious relationship was with Shanann. Then he meets Nicole (is that her name?). And I believe she was his first real "hot" relationship & he had absolutely no experience in handling that. Usually people have their first hot love in highschool. Nicole swept him off his feet. I agree with the people who believe she had a lot to do with the murders. If not actually partaking in the actual act but in talking Chris into committing them. And because he was so naive he was thinking with his penis by then & fell for everything Nicole was saying to him. I don't think murder ever crossed his mind until Nicole planted the seed. My God, look at how childish he planned the murders & how innocent his expectations were!! I for one believe Chris thought he was going to walk out of that interrogation room when they were thru asking him questions. Why else would he consent to the lie detection test. And the slamming of the door doesn't hit him until he realizes he has said too much and they are not going to release him.
It's amazing the job she does before, during & after the polygraph. She makes him all comfortable & then amps up the pressure! When she says "Cool thing is only one person here knows what the truth is & in 5 minutes 2 will know"! That's when I thought...It's all over for you Chris! This woman needs a raise!!!
Science shows that the way she behaved and how they both behaved in the interrogation isn't good as it also leads to innocent people confessing. That is why there are way more innocent people in US prisons then in my country. That kind of interrogation technique has shown to create false positive outcomes, therefore it is forbidden in my country and in most european countries.
Not too sure how I feel about it, as I've learnt that this is not how an interrogation should be done, but this time they got the gulity person.
No doubt the government can learn from this lady.
