Making a guitar, even the best DIY guitar kits requires help from this jig!

  • Making a guitar requires the guitar pro builder to get the acoustic guitar sides even. The acoustic guitar backside of the guitar is cut down perfectly and Monty makes a prototype bracing jig on this video to secure the guitar. Even with all guitar building kits, this guitar building jig is needed. The guitar pro builder uses a sanding to provide an easy solution to the problem of getting the sides level. Now, it's starting to look like a custom-built acoustic guitar.

I started with Tenor Ukes and have one finished, one a third of the way finished and a Baritone that I'll be starting in a week or so. It sure is both fun and in a sense compelling to build a stringed instrument whether guitar or Uke or...
I'd say anyone with fitting tools and patience can build one. Lots of patience because lots of jigs for various functions such as neck alignment are needed.
I chose the Ukes because, as is, my Band-Saw can only slice off up to 4 inch wide pieces that then are glued to form the soundboard or back. I like cutting off these slices myself because every 1 dollar piece of wood becomes $30 plus dollars when the adjective luthiers is applied to the piece. For example my first Uke has a Redwood top and back. It cost me nothing because it was formed from scrap material that came from a children's out door play ground set. On the other hand the Guitar Wizzard at Luthier Mercantile says the top is worth $200.

      Well done!!!
The problem with building guitars and ukuleles is the fact that once you've built one by the time you finish it you were already starting to think about what would you want to use for the next one. At least that's what happened to me. And now I am about 26 or 27 guitars built or somewhere around there.

The Ridgid floor drill press is the most true, square and straight. It has precisely ground cast iron castings, and it has the best rigidity. Got it at Home Depot and its been a solid tool.

The more and more I watch these videos, the more and more I get a renewed interest in building acoustic guitars. (when I was younger, I was only brave enough for electric haha) - not a super simple process, I know, but looks so enjoyable and very rewarding, I bet!

Found your channel through Peter. I love your demeanor! It's calming. I think that maybe it's a good idea to "bring" us with you while you're shopping? I'm not into making guitars, but I noticed I enjoy watching behind the scenes of people I follow (like your son). Maybe your niche market would appreciate that! Greetings from the Philippines!

I'm Australian and some time ago was doing some work in an English university for a few years. The staff lounge room served morning coffee and afternoon tea. It was immutable. If you wanted tea in the morning or coffee in the afternoon you went to the student cafeteria.
