I am filming a race recap video we’re i explain everything, including how those dreaded 4 extra minutes where due to a T1 “mistake” and getting slowed down for the last 20k of the bike by rain, but also running a HM pb @1:39❤️ But it’s ok, sub 5 will be next time!

    Great video! I did my first sprint last year and one thing that really helped me for that first race was going to an orientation that was hosted by a local tri club. There was no substitute for having 20+ people in the water and simulating the start of the race. I didn’t realize how chaotic it was going to be. So many arms and legs hitting each other, splashing, trying to sight the buoy, weeds in the water, turning at the buoy, when to stop etc. it was very helpful!

    • @PatrickDelorenzi
      @PatrickDelorenzi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So true! I also did a practice race (Olympic distance) with a mass start and it was CRAZY! So glad I did that before getting in the water of a proper race, the swim is for sure the biggest barrier of entry yes because it’s hard but also because of the fear factor and sheer panic of being in the “washing machine” 🔥🔥⚡️⚡️🌪🌪😂😂

    Hey Patrick.
    Awesome video - thank you. So much content here that is so very relatable. I have set an ironman as my 2024 goal. My 2023 goal is a sprint triathlon. Like you I run pretty well. No swim experience and no bike experience. Plus I have a few years on you :) Me being 52. But sat on the sofa last night after a great day of training when the desire to build to an ironman hit me. I just want to push myself as far as I can go and be more than just the average.
    Blessings from Australia

      @@catalinepure3663 Kind of you to ask. Training was going well until October last year when I developed what I thought was a calf tear. Over a couple of months it sort of healed but not quite. Had an MRI a week ago. Turns out I have a tumour in my leg!! Likely to be benign but has frustrated some aspects of training. Busy with some calisthenics and shorter runs < 10km so as not to aggravate the leg. Sorry for the long answer.

    Mate I loved the video, really appreciate all of the info and learnings. I'm also worried about running injuries as have loads in the past, so I think I will take your advice and get the intervals in on the bike and do Zone 2 runs. Priority is not the time but being injury free and being able to do multiple events. Thankyou will rewatch this a few times as there's so much rich info to absorb!

    • @PatrickDelorenzi
      @PatrickDelorenzi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100% I can recommend the bike intensity and run consistency strategy unless you are gunning for a world champ spot. Running is about getting comfortable at long distance submaximal effort, getting the legs conditioned etc. Once you reach the potential time you can get just by training this way (a sub 1:35 70.3 run or sub 3:30 IM marathon), then it’s time to include some intensity on the run. As a starting point, just doing zone 2 and some tempo work on the run is Kore than enough 🙌 Get good shoes like Nike invincible 3 or Hoka stinson ATR 6, run only on trails and avoid pavement, make sure you always warm up 10 min before tuning, wear compression socks and apply heat to the calves after every session to recover faster, never run two days in a row, and you should be good 👍

    • @timothybracken585
      @timothybracken585 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mate, running is the most strenuous exercise on the body so I believe in Patrick theory to reduce the impact of the runs and do more tempo runs which will help prevent injury and muscle fatigue.

I’ve struggled with spending so much time alone as my normal routine has been with a running group in our community. I realized quickly how drastic my schedule would change. One question I do have- how much strength and conditioning did you incorporate?

      Hey Steven! Glad you liked it, and hope it provides some useful insights! Yes being alone can be both a blessing, but also taxing on out mind.. But if we manage to spin it ot win it and dedicate the time to working on ourselves, the benefits can go way further than triathlon : ) Strenght training - 3x sun salutations, push ups, bicep curls and planks on the bosu ball every morning, about 15 minutes easy upon waking : )

    Patrick, that was an excellent video. I have been doing triathlons since 1985 and it has taken me 30 years to figure out the things that you came up with when preparing for your first 70.3. Your gel analysis was right on, and it took me until my 5th half iron to come up with 2 gels per hour and only the first 2 with caffeine. Swim technique is critical and looking at how your stroke changes over 400m is key. I recently changed to Hoka One One and noticed the value of cushioning for the run training. Keep up your training and focus, and I was not surprised to see your sub-11 for a full IM in 2022!

      Hi! At the moment I have a mini pump, tyre levers, Chan breaker tool with a chain link taped to the horizontal section of a Topeak Omni tri backup rear bottle cage holder. I put a spare tube underneath the saddle, taped with black electrical tape. I think it works fairly well if you don’t want to add in and extra box / bento. Another option would be to have all the tools etc in an empty water bottle on the bike, but as of 2023 I would recommend stashing the various tools where you can using electrical tape

    • @PatrickDelorenzi
      @PatrickDelorenzi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Anita, awesome! Learning to swim is hard but a lot of fun and totally worth it. For the gopro filming, I used to go to a gym with a pool, and often there was nobody there! So I had 1 hour solo and could film no problem. unfortunately for public pools i think you either need to be very lucky and get a moment when no one is there or book a lane, but I understand that might not be easy. Or maybe you could do a couple of private lessons with a coach and ask him to film / film yourself underwater! I did that in the beginning also- Let me know if you figure it out!
