  • In an interview for the FRONTLINE documentary “Putin’s Road to War,” journalist Julia Ioffe discusses Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine - and why she believes the Russian leader is now “more dangerous than he’s ever been at any point in the last 22 years.”
“What he has opened up with this invasion is unthinkable,” Ioffe tells FRONTLINE. “And because he is losing and because the sanctions and the Ukrainians are humiliating him, because he is backed into a corner, he is the most dangerous he has ever been, because it is now existential for him.”
Julia Ioffe is an American journalist who was born in Russia. She is a writer for and founding partner of the media company Puck. She previously reported on politics and world affairs for The Atlantic.
This interview was conducted by FRONTLINE’s Mike Wiser on March 3, 2022. It has been edited for clarity and length.

Why is "paranoia" to have asked to the NATO to stop installing military bases surrounding Russia? don't pretend to be a fool we are not fools! at least I see this is just gaslighting and deforming the reality: NATO and the U.S have been breaking the agreements that Russia and the U.S. had back in 1991.
Why this Julia is not mentioning the United States bombed Yugoslavia without the authorization of the U.N and the EU?
How the NATO have not been threatening russia? they have been surrounding them with military bases for the last 30 years!!

We need more interviews like this where there is sufficient time on the clock and the expert is allowed to talk at length uninterrupted. That was an actual professorial explanation into Putin's probable mindset by someone steeped in the nuances of the matter.

It's only one person's opinion. It's a qualified opinion, to be sure, but professionals steeped in the nuances of what they study frequently disagree and see things a great deal differently. Putin could be where she really shines, but I don't know. I do know that I've listened to her on other topics and at times was struck by just how much of an unquestioning/standard-issue 2000s collegiate mind she had. (This is a major hazard of attending a prestigious university-you trust everything you learn there, including the mistaken prejudices common among your fellow students, who are just leaving adolescence.) Not that I disagree with you, though. I do agree.

I would have preferred that they ask a couple more questions. There's been some focus elsewhere on Merkel having miscalculated (and Biden going along with this) and people claiming that Trump had made some accurate remarks on Germany's energy situation. A focus on the US doesn't address the role of Europe in filling Russia's coffers and putting them in a situation where - in the aftermath of pandemic related economic effects - they want their economies to return to life and are deeply compromised (Europe using Russian hydrocarbons and Britain regarded as morally compromising via banking). The other question where she kinda goes both ways is where this comes from. She addresses Putin's prior remarks, but there's a split on people who claim "this isn't the same Putin we knew" (which lets them off the hook) and others who regard him as always having wanted this (but having manipulated envoys and journalists etc). So I've noted experts who observe Putin initially sounded like he wanted to make Russia more liberal and others who say that he controls western perceptions (can be charming as needed, threatening when he feels like it etc). So I appreciate the journalism (and letting her talk at length) but would have liked some questions to test how her thesis responded to complications. These would have added nuance or allowed her to address why she thinks other narratives are wrong (and strengthen her position).
To be clear, I found this interview to be profoundly interesting, but I've seen a bunch of other credible commentators (or at least people with decent bona fides) with disparate opinions. It's because I hold the interviewee in high regard that I'd want her thoughts on other narratives.

Lol, man how does this kind of shit work on people...before I flesh out why this is largely bullshit emotional rhetoric, as Atzlan was vaguely suggesting, with little grains of truth covering up a larger and more revealing context ("limited hangout"), I'll answer my own question and suggest people read Manufacturing Consent by Chomsky/Herman, Ukraine is a perfect example of a "worthy victim" in that text. Also, disclaimer, this isn't apologia/justification for the invasion, my only point here is to describe why this whole thing is _infinitely_ more complicated than the flattened palimpsest of history presented here which amounts to "US good, Putin bad" while simultaneously whitewashing the vastly more reprehensible crimes of the US corporate empire (lol my god, she even mentions the proxy conflicts in Nicaragua, El Salvador, et al. but leaves out of course the forces instigating and directing these conflicts at the behest of corporate/finance capital, the CIA - a perfect example of how a limited hangout functions to abstract away any grounded material realities behind a veil of emotionally driven nebulous speculation/nonsense - see Operation Condor, basically the Monroe Doctrine 2: no sovereignty for you). I mean like, if one wants to claim Putin is Hitler as the corporate media is brazenly pushing, despite being a tenuous analogy at best (woah they both invaded, what a parallel...literally where this parallel ends) but whatever, that's fine, but then extrapolating such a weak comparison would mean the US is Hitler x 1,000,000. To pretend US hegemony/global empire _doesn't even exist_ is quite the feat of "misinformation", simultaneously surprising and not at all surprising as this was very intentionally constructed, to quote -demonic arcon- CIA director William Casey in his hubris describing the efficacy of Operation Mockingbird, _"We'll know our disinformation campaign is complete when everything believed by the American public is false."_ Surely he's giving two thumbs up in hell, which is probably hard to distinguish from the world he helped create for us all, but I clearly digress, let me flesh this out a bit as I certainly don't fault anyone for not knowing this stuff as a capital-L Liberal cultural hegemony ideologically obscures even looking at what is really just hidden in plain sight at this point.
The US is the global hegemon...we do imperialism by merely existing and as the "consumer of last resort" at the end of the global supply chain (that we enforce/coerce militarily/financially) to absorb capitalism's inevitable overproduction through cheap consumption or of course, as it relates here, through war and arms sales (military Keynesianism, the only button we can push at this point clearly). We accomplish this through the Bretton-Woods international financial system, leveraged by the US post-WWII by being the only industrialized nation-state _not_ bombed to shit and effectively taking the imperial baton from the British and their pound sterling, cementing the dollar as the "global reserve currency" and through the IMF/World Bank and its post-'71 (Nixon shock) -debt peonage/resource/labor control austerity policy- "structural adjustment" programs lend capital in dollar loans under the stipulation of absolute control of labor/markets/resources by US capital, "an offer they can't refuse" essentially - any nation-states refusing to bend the knee like Cuba (see: Operation Mongoose, Operation Northwoods a perfect template for the US "detachment strategy" aka the "strategy of tension", merely was prevented by Kennedy), Venezuela (sitting on the largest oil reserve in the world, what a coincidence), Iran (which we couped in '53 installing the Shah to prevent oil nationalization, shocker, Operation AJAX), et al. of course gets unilaterally sanctioned (we have sanctions on like 1/3rd of the world currently) and excluded from the global trade network run at our behest _at the minimum_ , but also perpetually coup-ed by the CIA or just overtly invaded. Aka "freedom" and "democracy" lol...I mean John Mearsheimer has been screaming about a war in Ukraine for decades, hell William Burns (now CIA director) has a cable you can read leaked by wikileaks that notes how consciously Russian security was known to be threatened by NATO expanding eastward and revealing how this was deliberately exploited for US interests, well US corporate/finance capital's interest that is (reneging James Baker's promise to Gorbachev in '91 promising NATO would not expand "one inch eastward", which one can read the transcript of in the natsec archives).
So idk, let me do a rough sketch of some more historical reference points as there's an infinite amount of angles to get at all this, importantly this is grounded in _material_ reality to cut through rhetorical nonsense and so hopefully one can triangulate a fleshed out understanding of all this: Operation Gladio ("stay behind" fascist paramilitary "in case of Soviet invasion" ostensibly, "strategy of tension", see Aldo Moro's assassination & the bologna bombings blamed on the red brigades, aka the "years of lead" in Italy, insane honestly), Operation Cyclone (in the late 70s/80s before/after/during the Saur revolution in Afghanistan, the CIA funded/trained the Salafi-jihadist mujahideen separatists to, in the words of Zbigniew Brzezinski its cold-warrior architect, "give the USSR its own Vietnam", that insurgent faction later fractures into Al Qaeda and the Taliban..."oops"), Guatemala in '54 (Operation PBSUCCESS, modest land reform by democratically elected Arbenz, origin of term "banana republic" with United Fruit Company directly connected to Honduras, El Salvador, Haiti, Mexico, Nicaragua, et al. which again she mentioned in passing leaving the implication that these were somehow connected to the USSR or something), Lumumba in the Congo (famous pic of JFK crying over this as he supported Lumumba's vision of a unified Africa, the CIA carrying this out right before he took office so he couldn't cancel it as he would have, corroborated by his cancellation of Operation Northwoods false flag for invasion of Cuba...gee, weird that guy got his head blown off and LBJ escalates Vietnam, what a coincidence lol...), Sukarno in Indonesia (The Jakarta Method by Vincent Bevins documents the grotesque genocide of at least 1,000,000 civilians at the hands of CIA-directed paramilitary - also check out the Phoenix Program in Vietnam, really "cool" stuff, can't imagine why the USSR was so paranoid...and yeah, sarcasm, hopefully obvious lol), the _first_ 9/11 in 1973 in Chile ousting democratically elected Allende to install Pinochet's military dictatorship, I mean sadly the tip of the imperialist iceberg here (realizing I'm gonna write a book before I'm done honestly lol), but I guess my point is "terrorism" is and has been cultivated to serve the perpetuation of capitalism and US hegemony immediately post-WWII. I mean really in the most important ways, the nazis didn't lose WWII, the only distinction between the US neoliberal corporate empire and the third Reich fascist project seems more aesthetic/ideological than anything else, chopping off the visceral ultranationalist id in favor of a generic "cost-effective" corporate sheen (unconsciously serving "the market" gods essentially, all possibility strictly bounded to profitability; Sheldon Wolin's conception of "inverted totalitarianism" elaborates this well). Hell, the US absorbs the _literal_ nazi leadership in things like Operation Paperclip and the ratlines to south america, putting many of them like Reinhard Gehlen, Paul Schafer (instrumental in Pinochet's ascension), Klaus Barbie (France/Bolivia), Otto Skorzeny (basically nazi james bond), et al. on the -SS 2.0 for transnational corporate/finance capital- CIA's payroll.
NATO is an arms distribution network for the military industrial complex and essentially the public face of a European sphere of US domination, covertly enforced by the template of Operation Gladio, its mission as succinctly put by its first secretary general was/is to "keep the Americans in, the Germans down, and the Russians out".
If not apparent from all of this, as it relates to Ukraine, conveniently there was a leaked phone call from Victoria Nuland to the Ukrainian ambassador during the '14 maidan uhh..."revolution" (I would say coup as though it starts with peaceful demonstrations it ends with an unconstitutional ousting of Yanukovych and is backed by the US/regional oligarchs aligned with the west, as the sniper insanity/this phone call reveals), where she tells the ambassador "f*** the EU" (the only thing the corporate media focused on of course, to misdirect from the more revealing/damning elements of US domination over this entire region, I would say at least) and "magically" picks the Ukrainian president installed. She says, _“I don’t think Klitsch_ [Vitaly Klitschko] _should go into government… I think Yats_ [Arseniy Yatseniuk] _is the guy…“_
The immediate issue was whether to accept a loan from the IMF which was going to require a 40% increase in natural gas bills or to accept a loan from Russia with the inclusion of cheap oil and gas. The opposition wanted the Yanukovych government to take the EU/IMF loan. The opposition was comprised of different factions, undeniably including the neo-Nazi Svoboda Party and Right Sector, but right there is where it all connects to financial empire of the US, the IMF/World Bank are essentially the financial tentacles of US corporate empire worldwide.
If we ask the _only_ political question of cui bono? (who benefits?) shocker, as usual, the military industrial complex; their only success is the rest of the world's defeat (climate change _alone_ my god...), the common ruin of the contending classes. Socialism or [continued] barbarism.

Understanding the dynamics of a corrupt country that should have remained neutral instead of pushing to be in NATO is more difficult. Understanding that western partners were brazenly selling influence on the vulnerable western flank of an adversary, means taking some responsibility. The real world is rarely as simple as good vs. evil.

She knows little about Central and Western Europe though, when she compares the Ukrainian refugee situation with the Syrian one. We got riots going on right now in Sweden with Middle Easterners, we had terror attacks, we had severe rises in crime. That won't happen with Ukrainians and it's got nothing to do with their skin color.

The United States invaded Ukraine 8 years ago, organizing a revolution there, and preparations began much earlier. What would have happened if Crimea had not gone to Russia and Donnbas had not resisted the Kiev regime? Now there would be US bases in Crimea, and installations for launching missiles would be on the eastern border of Ukraine. Did Putin come to the US borders? No, the United States came to the borders of Russia. And Putin warned - stop, you crossed the "red line". You were struck by the virus of omnipotence and impunity. But this time, next target does not want to be a victim and turns into a hunter. How unexpected, isn't it?

      I agree!
It's pretty simple to win when you're willing to use chemical and biological weapons, drop bombs onto maternity Hospitals full of Women and Children, fire missiles into occupied residential buildings full of terrified families and threaten to use nuclear weapons on anyone who tries to assist his victims risking Armageddon for all humanity.
How could anyone lose who is willing to take things to the levels that Putin is?
He's already displayed his willingness to murder innocent civilians én massé without hesitation and that's without any credible resistance.
Imagine what he'd be capable of doing if his back was against the wall and he was under attack himself?
He's already attacking Babies, Pregnant Women, Children, Civilians, Schools, Hospitals, Churches, Mosques, Cities and food supplies leaving people to starve to death.
He's already despised by the majority of the civilised world.
He will not hesitate to launch a nuclear warhead directly onto any City in any Country without giving a shit about wiping out a couple of million people and erasing an entire City in a heartbeat.
One nuclear warhead has the capability to achieve that devastation. Putin has 12,800+ of them.
He'd only need about 6 of them to wipe out the whole of the United Kingdom.
He has enough of them to wipe out the planet 2 or 3 times over.

Some of the intel analyzed by Ioffe and others has been available online for a while but this is a super revealing and an excellent piece of journalism.
Here we see Ioffe show her grit, her guts and her thought leadership. This is what true journalism looks like, from an impressive person whose knowledge is very real. For newcomers to this space it might seem convenient or timely in March of 2022 but Ioffe is no spring chicken. This candid PBS coverage goes back awhile. When it comes to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other adjacent countries, she was way WAY out ahead of this in terms of open-source intelligence. They (PBS, Ioffe, others) have been really gutsy, talking truth to power and have done it for a long time. This is not an example of a random journalist doing a hit piece. Ioffe has been on top of this for a long time and now that the “story” has picked up due to the war - this isn’t new. Any notion of it being new is just a western construct. She has been covering this story with authority for a very long time. I hope more people pay attention to what she is saying here, and I hope people educate themselves about this issue and recognize her clear-headed, sober assessment of where we are right now and let’s pray that they listen. She has been playing this song for awhile and truthfully, she warned us. At her own risk, she stuck her neck out, made people aware of this conflict. She probably saved a few lives along the way. Major hero here. She may not wear a NATO/US military rank on her shoulder but has certainly earned the right to some high-level rank as an intelligence authority.

In the European Union, genderless politicians, no one resisted the termination of mutually beneficial cooperation with Russia in the energy sector. Europe could produce competitive goods with cheap energy from Russia, but has caved in under American threats and has imposed or is threatening to impose sanctions against Russia. You will all be told about bad Russia and bad Putin without any background and reasons that led to the conflict in Ukraine. Nobody will tell you that the Ukrainian president threatened to withdraw from the agreement according to which Ukraine should not have nuclear weapons. Nobody will tell you that in Ukraine there are special Nazi battalions in the army. These battalions with the same worldview as the SS were in Nazi Germany. No one will tell you in your media about how Ukraine shelled its own cities with artillery guns and threatened the Russian population. Europeans, Americans, don't be fooled by propaganda! They will all present Ukraine to you as a victim without any background, without the cruelty that the Ukrainian army did against its population and against the Russians who live on the territory of Ukraine. It was the genocide of the Russian population, which was carried out by the Ukrainian government against the Russians. Look for the causes of this conflict rather than watching propaganda that presents you with the consequences in a way that is beneficial to the Western collective government.

@@O1OO1O1 For the record, I want to be clear that I think that the US, or any other major power for that matter, will most likely NOT openly assassinate Putin at this time or any time in the near future. Doing so would be a ridiculous choice, unless he does something insane, like actually use nuclear missiles. I’m willing to speculate along with many of the prominent journalists and analysts on the current media platforms that Putin will be taken out internally in Russia. He may be replaced by another dictator; in fact, he probably will be by Western definitions simply because the structure of the Russian government and the Russian economy is currently beyond the tolerable limitations acceptable in most Western nations. In short, I believe his days as a ruler are numbered because money talks and when those Russian oligarchs start feeling the pinch in their bottom lines, he will not be protected. Putin was put into power to maintain the corrupt status quo, but according to most major sources, he does not have someone that he’s personally hand-picked to replace him for when he has to step down. I think his problem is his hubris. Had he just successfully planned for an acceptable replacement and quietly faded into the background with his I’ll-gotten gains instead of trying to fulfill his delusional fantasy of reinstating Russia as as a superpower to leave as a legacy, he would have been better off. There is no doubt in my mind that the war in Ukraine is at its root level a proxy war intended on seeking revenge at Western leaders that he perceived did not give him, or his precious Mother Russia, enough respect during his time at the top. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is not only a a disservice to the world in terms of security and the disruption of the global economy, it is a cruel act because it is directed at a peaceful nation and is a selfishly manifested super-spreader event in a world attempting to recover from a global pandemic. While some criminals may profit from this conflict, I believe that the undue attention they may garner from Putin’s decisions will eventually lead to his demise. Whether this “demise” is literal or merely figurative, only time will tell. Thank you for your response.

As someone who majored in poli sic/ international and is current events/history nerd relations I find the short surface level interviews so boring with no new info and perspectives to learn. She is utterly useless as an expert...yes she has a Russian background, but her whole world outlook is based on the meaningless rhetoric of postmodern thought. Putin will lose because he meets in giant gilded halls with him sitting higher then the rest. I mean he took over a whole nation...but this woman thinks he's tacky, so she gets to have the smug face?? Nope, not buying it...this is a terrible way to try to understand what is going on.
