Better Negotiating for Better Building Projects

  • So much of figuring out projects is about making decisions with key people.
A team of owners, or different directors within a company, or working with other architects and contractors, or figuring out leases and contracts and issues with a city...
To move a project forward, there's simply a lot of stuff to figure out, and a lot of people involved, so the way that we handle both the people and the problems we're solving is key.
The book Getting to Yes is about negotiation, and is in it's 3rd printing, and was developed by Harvard Law professors, and is widely regarded as a key text for negotiating in any situation.
In my world as an architect and building developer, regardless of the size or budget of a project, there's only so much area and budget we have to work with. So that means that everything is a negotiation, as to what gets what amount of space, and where do we spend our dollars?
Further, I've found that the design process (and creative process in general) can be guided in a much more smooth fashion, with some of the ideas that are presented in this book, because I've found that this book is far more than a "how-to" book on negotiation, it's really a design manual and guide for interpersonal relationships.
