As mentioned in the video, before you add in the veggies - poke the beef and see if the chopstick will go through without much resistance. (It's hard to give an exact timing because everyones cut of beef will be different size.) If the meat still has alot of resistance... add in some more water to the broth and let it boil away for another 15-20 minutes. Then proceed to add-in the veggies and continue as show in the video. (Note: If the sauce reduces too quickly... lower the heat and simply add in a few more swigs of water... trust me, the taste will still be amazing!!)
Omg and don't ever tell your mom that you are full after she spent like a half hour making you food. The look of disappointment. And then she will argue with you to eat more. I remember my mom literally shoving food at me lol. Korean moms are the best.
My wife is Korean, so when I seen this recipe I tried it and couldn’t believe it, it turned out so well and it was delicious, I took screenshots of it and showed my wife she loved it
I made this for my dad on Father’s Day and he was extremely pleased. I’m throwing away my other go-to recipe for braised short ribs and replacing it with Daniel’s. Thanks, neighbor, for sharing.
This stew was a hit at my home potluck last night. I did not have time to let the meat marinade but cooked it on low heat, let it simmered for 2hrs. The flavor was still amazing with a nice rich broth. Thanks for the recipe!!🎉
Just wanted to mention that if you look at 4:33-4:45, there is a hole in the foil. Acidic items eat through foil. You can see that there is some foil on the tip of the bone that was sticking up and touching the foil. You need to make sure that nothing touches the foil or put a piece of parchment paper over the acidic food first, before covering with foil. Hope that helps someone! :)
I have never "trimmed" the edges of my carrots or radish. I had no idea that it would even matter...learned something new today. Thanks and happy 2020!
Drooling now. Will make this SOON. Short ribs in freezer! Thank you Dan yul & Katie, your videos always make me ☺ & Hungry 😋. Your wonderful efforts are highly appreciated & inspiring. Binge watching during staying home!
I made this tonight it turned out so good, my place still smells delicious! Thank you for sharing your recipes with us! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Daaaang! Looks sooo good. Kudos to you. I love your fun down home approach and presentation, as well as your respect for Korean style cooking and tips you’ve shared for this treasured recipe. Looks like a definite, “must try”! 👏🏽
I tried this recipe and I can guarantee it's amazing! It is already sweet enough without the honey, so give it a try! Cooking it nice and slow allows all the flavor to marinate nicely! Softer than soft!
Delphine B. Kiwi is a good choice. My mom always uses kiwi too. Well, she did because she lives in the middle of nowhere in Germany 😂 But she does have access to every korean ingredient needed though.
In this recipe of braised beef i learned that it is so much famous not only in the Philippines but all ove the world and also i think that your dish is delicious
Don't know how I lived without this for so long! I make dog food for 2 of our dogs th-cam.com/users/postUgkxG-7WiT7ocumjytOpHDFt632PL0pxXRAg (we have 5!) and it is so much quicker in this. Love having the inner pot stainless so I can use my immersion blender right in it without worrying about scratching. It makes potatoes great and fast! Still working on the vegetables, first time came out great, second time I did different ones and they were a little too mushy. Just need to adjust the time. I highly recommend this pot!!!
Just finished making and eating this after following your recipe and instructions closely. Absolutely incredible, everyone loved it and I'll definitely be making it again in the future! Thank you!
Such an amazing recipe 😍 tried it today and absolutely delicious. The beef, the carrots and the radish are all tender and full of the flavors. For some reason, I needed more than 3 table spoons for enough flavor.I put in gochujang and Korean rice cake when I reheat the dish and it was heaven 😋
Tired to make this by subtituing mirin with rice vinegar + sugar and unknowingly using Chinese soy sauce.. tasted totally different! Tried to make again using the right ingredients, tasted amazing! I ended up using slow cooker for one night because the beef was still so tough. The beef kinda lost its shape a bit but totally tasted amazing!! Thanks for sharing ❤️
The cooking tips you gave are great! I especially appreiciated what you said about turnips instead of potatoes. I was wondering that my self. And the veggies look more elegant trimmed the way you did.
Every Asian Grocer in the West should have the white radish available by now. My Grocer also stocks Perilla leaves too, it's nice to see the lines from the supermarkets go up.
Yum 😋 I love this dish. I’ve only had it at restaurants. I’m very thankful that you’ve thought us how to make it at home. Happy Holidays to you and your beautiful fiancé. You’re really beautiful people.
I have had this it is really good but they did add hard boiled eggs and it was amazing I do recommend adding the hard boiled egg 😊 thank you for the recipe
Thanks for this recipe! My favorite Korean restaurant makes a great braised short ribs dish and I will never be able to know what their recipe is, but this also looks wonderful.
Question. Do we need to have them soaked for 3-4 hours in cold water? Can we skip that part and just boil them in a pot to get most of the impurities out?
Europeans don't worry too much, and we don't throw away the cooking water! To us, the "meaty smell" Asian cooks worry about is flavour! I just skim the broth at the first boil if it needs it and proceed.
Hi! I made this last year and it was a hit. I am planning to make again for my friend's Birthday. Should I double the measurement for the marinade if I have 4lbs of ribs? Thank you!
korean moms have some patience, waiting 2 minutes before starting to get upset. once my mom announced supper, i had 2 seconds to run down 50 steps before all hell broke loose.
I made this a month ago & it was delicious, but the meat was tough. I'm planning on making it again this week. Has anyone tried cooking everything in an insta pot? If so how long did you cook it in there for? Hoping that this time the mean will be more tender and easy to chew.
@ time 2:19 (Marinate) 6 cloves garlic, did you added in the blender, however your written receipe states put it aside. Also, in the recipe you added 1 tsp of minced garlic with the marinade. I dnt understand?
Hi Neighbor, thanks for recipe. Can I leave them on refrigerator for example 1 week? I want to skip Mirin, do you think it's going to change the flavor?
As mentioned in the video, before you add in the veggies - poke the beef and see if the chopstick will go through without much resistance. Looks so good, can you specify at what point we'd add the ingredients to a pressure cooker and if the amounts would vary? Thanks!
Can I use a different type of radish?
Future Neighbor “blanch” not “blanche”
Can I substitute the cooking wine for white grape juice or vegetable stock?
Future Neighbor can you make a spicy version please? pLeASe!!
I’m half Filipino and my buddy’s half Korean so we always trade off recipes and now I wanna surprise him with this dish
Best of luck
Goodluck kabayan
How did it go?
The intro anecdote was 10/10
Every Korean kid knows that mom yell ... all to well ... 빨리 와!!!!!!!!!!! 🙃
Omg yes! Korean Moms can lay on the guilt pretty thick - the ungrateful speech and how I worked so hard on this meal 😆

I just finished Marinating the Ribs! I can't wait to see how it tastes tomorrow 😃😍
I tried this recipe and I can guarantee it's amazing! It is already sweet enough without the honey, so give it a try! Cooking it nice and slow allows all the flavor to marinate nicely! Softer than soft!
Done with kiwi and turnip instead (i'm in the middle of nowhere in France) and it was delicious! Thanks for this recipe :)
Delphine B. Kiwi is a good choice. My mom always uses kiwi too.
Well, she did because she lives in the middle of nowhere in Germany 😂 But she does have access to every korean ingredient needed though.
Do you think apple can be used too?
@@jeremynaredo4512yes, some people use apples
Well done. Simple and to the point deliciousness👍🏻
Love this dish 🥰🥰🥰🥰want it all the times and thanks to you now I could do it 💃🏻👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤞🏻
Pro-tip: Add your mushrooms in earlier, the proteins they're made of denature differently, so you literally cannot overcook them in a braise.
I am African American and I’m so ready to cook this dish for my family. 😊
Your video is very helpful especially for a student like me. I hope you'll make more videos about different recipes!
Wow !! It was absolutely delicious. Now my husband very favourite dinner. Thank you for sharing

You nailed it! Nice!
Can you please explain how you cut your radish into larger pieces? Mine always end up smaller. 6:00
First time knowing that you can chamfer the carrot to avoid break off s, woodwork knowledge is useful.

By the way, you have one of the best recipes of galbi jim. Thank you so much.
Thanks for sharing boss ! Thumbs up !
An excellent recipe that every one should try except for the time it takes for marinating.
Looks sooooooo goooooood
This looks delicious, I was wondering if anyone has made this in a crock pot?
That intro was on point bro LOL
Can Shaoxing wine be used instead of mirin 1:1?
korean moms have some patience, waiting 2 minutes before starting to get upset.
once my mom announced supper, i had 2 seconds to run down 50 steps before all hell broke loose.
cookie 😂
Please! I need a rice bol’s recipe!! Please, please ,please! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🍀🍀🍀 . Happy New Year 🎊🎆🎈!! 👏👏👏😅🇺🇸🇺🇸 . A R !
I added 2 tbsp of fish sauce on my 2nd try because my lovely housemates said it needed a little bit of saltyness. It tasted better!
Can you cook it in a slow cooker? Would you add more water for a slow cooker?
How long do you suggest in the IP for that beef tenderness but not overcooking it?
"Oil tanker had an accident" 🤣
Thanks for the video gonna try making this for dinner.
What soup or side dish goes well with galbijim?
Kim chee, pickled cucumber or bean sprouts . This is a stew dish
I made this a month ago & it was delicious, but the meat was tough. I'm planning on making it again this week. Has anyone tried cooking everything in an insta pot? If so how long did you cook it in there for? Hoping that this time the mean will be more tender and easy to chew.
Isn't Korean cooking wonderful. This one looks easy and delicious. Wow! I think i can do this one. Thanks for sharing. Can i use pork instead?
@ time 2:19 (Marinate) 6 cloves garlic, did you added in the blender, however your written receipe states put it aside. Also, in the recipe you added 1 tsp of minced garlic with the marinade. I dnt understand?
yes you add the garlic to the blender. the minced tsp was ginger not garlic ^^
I love it and wpuld like to try but I don't consume alcohol. Is it possible for any substitution?
Miren (rice wine) is very sweet and only has 1% alcohol and will dissipate when the meat is cooked. You can use a mild vinegar or pure orange juice.
I wanna try this!
Awesome awesome!!😎 😎
what could you sub for the radish?
Potatoes
Hi Neighbor, thanks for recipe. Can I leave them on refrigerator for example 1 week? I want to skip Mirin, do you think it's going to change the flavor?
is there any veg we can use instead of radish?
Can i use some other meat instead of beef? What can be the substitute
You can use pork!
