To me their secret weapon is their drummer Cavs (Michael Cavanaugh) I just love all of his grooves and fills. He even put out his own album that's entirely percussion
Agreed about KGLWs drummer/s....great....but sometimes the snare is poorly produced (e.g. throughout Sketches) and makes odd album or song irritating if they overlook the drumming a bit in mix...though nothing in their catalogue is as bad as on Cirith Ungols King of Hell. Made all the worse by excellent songs wallpapered with constant drumming clicks so loud it makes it sound like the producer forgot to hide the click track....sry just noticed my accidental crossing over of two CU albums....the terrible production of snare can be found all the way through the album One Foot In Hell....
I feel the same about Maximum the Hormone's album Bu-ikikaesu. The snare is so ringy and ugly lol but hopefully on a good enough album it's just a nitpick
@@listersays yeah it's a shame when it happens....but I find made worse when the songs are clearly very good....my heckles go up everytime I've tried to hear through the wall of clicks on every song on One Foot In Hell ...maybe the vinyl version will be better I don't know....but as a fan with all their CDs it's so obvious im surprised it's not been remastered....
As a Gizz Head I was really excited to see your reaction to that guitar tone on KGLW when it kicks in and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Rats Nest is just that dialed up to 11 with a crazy narrative thread so if you enjoyed that, there is so much more to discover. As for the microtonal stuff, volumes 2 and 3 (KG and LW) are a great listen but volume 1 (Flying Mircrotonal Banana) is where it is at. Also, that "curdled milk" pressing is SUPER fresh!
You should definitely check out their track The Dripping Tap after seeing your reaction to the final track on this album. I feel you’d thoroughly enjoy the energy of all 18 minutes of it
I've listened to all of their microtonal albums quite a few times and the ear eventually gets used to the microtones. At first it was somewhat painful for me as well, but now I think it sounds absolutely amazing. I hope they keep making these. You should really try K.G. in the future, which is similar to this one but still quite different in many places. But try Polygondwanaland next. It's their best album IMO.
They have a set of instruments specifically modified for playing microtones, with a different fretboard. There's a fun story behind their first microtonal instrument, Stu's Flying Microtonal Banana. Basically, microtones are steps between halftones, 24TET instead of our usual 12.
hello Jim, thank you for sharing your records, I'm discovering a lot of new music I've never heard before, and as a thank you for all your wonderful work and great joyful smiles, I'm sending you a surprise package, I will mail it tomorrow, it's an old amazon box full of "things"
Hey Jim great reaction. Love this album, I mentioned it in the comments of your last video but you should definitely check out their thrash album "Infest the Rats Nest". Their new album "Omnium Gatherum" too for sure
Amazing Jim! So glad you enjoyed this one, the fact that it's one of the weaker ones that they've put out speaks volumes about the band! I hope you'll continue to discover their music on the channel! Cheers!
It's so exciting to see other people discover King Gizzard's music, and your reactions are genuine! but... you still have a universe to discover within the music of KG, or rather a Gizzverse and 18 more albums. For my part I am very excited because I have tickets for his next SPECIAL 3-HOUR MARATHON SET in Mexico City! A hug from a new subscriber Jim! I look forward to seeing the next videos about the music of King Gizzard. I JUST HAVE TO SAY WOOOOOOOOOOO!!! (Sorry for my bad English)
You were correct, Jim. K.G.L.W. was awesome! If I'm being honest I could do without most of the rest of it, but that track is great. I'd listen to a whole album of that for sure.
Agreed, most of the album is really poor by Gizz standards. Bland, forgettable and lots of filler but the closing track is one of their best (aside from the cheesy lyrics).
Not a fan favorite by any means but I actually prefer this one to it's predecessor K.G. Can't wait to see you check out polygondwanaland, I think it'll be right up your alley
King gizzard is one of my favorite and one of the most prolific bands out right now. everything they put out is worth plenty of listens, but if you wanna check out another I recommend thee oh sees my favorite album by them is "Orc"
King gizzard is easily my favorite band and I love seeing your reaction and enjoyment listening to them. They like to explore the areas of music that are untouched by popular music and very often use strange time signatures and poly rhythms, as well as old school recording techniques. Some people expecting normal rock beats and such don't get it at first, but if you appreciate art in music and creative exploration of sound, there is no better band then giz. Hope you listen to many more soon!
Been hoping for a King Gizzard reaction and starting off with one of my absolute favourites too! Gizz is the most wonderful rabbit hole to fall down and with such a diverse discography and prolific work ethic you'll be well catered for for a long time to come! Hope your day is a swell one! I reccomend either I'm In your Mind Fuzz or Nonagon Infinity for the definitive "Gizz Experience", obviously the companion album KG too, but Gumboot Soup and their most recent, Omnium Gatherum, which are collections of may different styles from Jazz to Thrash to Hip hop, are great places to start off with to see what vibe of theirs you wanna get stuck into!
Glad you enjoyed it! Their other 2 microtonal albums are more than worth checking out, especially the first. Their evolution is incredible to experience from the beginning, but diving into random albums is also a great way to go. I first heard them on their Murder of their Universe album and was immediately hooked. It's a guitar and story driven record with a super catchy flow similar to Nonagon Infinity.
Hi from Germany & welcome to King Gizzard! As a fan of ProgRock like you are, you should definitely check out Polygondwanaland from them. Don’t hesitate, buy the ticket take the ride! Much love! 😊
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🤗....in music and like in anything else in life....no pain...no gain...bands Like KGATLW , Cult of Luna....even Opeth...all push certain boundaries constantly....tuning in is what it's all about...I only tuned into Miles Davis properly two or 3 years ago after several goes....once that's achieved you feel like you are on a new plain of existence.....🙏🤣😁..... you might have to get the LP out twice a month at least Jim I'm sure😜👻👨🎤
As a fan of king gizzard’s entire discography I reckon it’d be great for you to hear their most recent album “omnium gatherum” and the first two volumes of their explorations into the microtonal universe “microtonal banana” and “KG”
Hey Jim, great reactions as always, glad you loved KGLW like the rest of us! Not quite the same but I’d really recommend the new Deafheaven record Infinite Granite. Much more shoegazey than their regular post-hardcore stuff but it’s a really technically impressive album that sets a mood. If you’re just looking to listen to one track I’d say ‘Great Mass of Colour’ is their best
Would highly recommend listening to the band Cardiacs, I think they'd be up your street. Very odd music from the 80s and 90s, a proggy-but-not-proggy mixture of loads of different styles.
I'm probably going to be laughed at for saying this, but I think this would go through the stratosphere if they had somehow gotten Shakira to do at least some of the vocals. I love the instrumentation and melody. A vocalist of Shakira's ability would seal the deal on it for me.
Check out their song Intrasport off of KG. It isn't Shakira but it sounds like a Britney Spears track as interpreted by a Turkish hooka bar DJ who is super high on DMT. Pretty catchy.
Illume, you might enjoy the band Satellites - they do this sound with female vocals, and are - I think from Trkey or thereabout... th-cam.com/video/DcUXMzifA9I/w-d-xo.html
Do caralho! Curtindo muito esse som! Parabéns Jim. Recomendo AZZAROK (musicas: Pay with blood e Endless Mysteries); DARKAVENGER (Álbum: The beloved Bone) ANGRA (Álbum: Temple of shadows). Forte abraço!

Maybe not a big surprise but they can definitely capture that feeling in 12-TET when they want to.
You should definitely check out their track The Dripping Tap after seeing your reaction to the final track on this album. I feel you’d thoroughly enjoy the energy of all 18 minutes of it
Gaia as well would probably invoke a similar reaction
I suggest Omnium Gatherum as a whole!
You should defiantly take a deep dive into their discography. Check out Polygondwanaland, Gumboot Soup or Fishing for Fishies next.
He got polygon so that might be coming soon
Infest the Rats Nest and Polygondwanaland are amazing. Both very different from each other!

Excellent. On first listen, I like side 2 even more than side 1. That last track is a monster! I can’t wait for your next KGLW reaction.
