A tour of Googie's late winter garden with her five fave tools including terrifying demo (eek!)

- Georgie's 83 year old mother, Googie, has a garden 0.87 of an acre which she still gardens herself with a good deal of vigour. Have a little late winter tour and as we go a demo (eek!) of some of her top five tools without which she would not be. And yes, there are hedgehogs.
As you can see from what's going on in Googie's greenhouse, we are in mid seed sowing season. Love Googie! I could watch her all day! I especially like the tip on reusing labels. I accidentally found that hand sanitiser\alcohol gel also gets all permanent marker off with 1 wipe 😃

I knew exactly what she was going to do! My mum did that a few years ago and the bin fell over so she's a bit more careful now and I am often warned about it - but she's still gardening and loving it at nearly 80. I will show her this fellow bin-tramper! Thank you for sharing her and her garden 😃

My goodness I see where you get you ‘can do’ attitude from. Your mum is a real old school countrywoman and her garden a reflection of her love for it. I’m not sure about her hedgehog bedding 🦔 plans but she probably knows best. My husband always says “Andale Andale” in the way of Speedy Gonzalez as well whenever carpet underlay is mentioned. Maybe it’s a generation thing? 😂 Thanks for taking the time to make this delightful cheerful video x

Climbing in bins! My in-laws took up open ocean kayaking in their 70s. And my dad was one for climbing under his tractor to fix it well into his 80s. That's how one lives a long and active life. Of course, if I said things like, "inspiration" he would roll his eyes at my condescension. :) He certainly encouraged and inspired all my gardening efforts, from my childhood through to when he would give me starts to plant at my house. And when he bought and planted 100 blueberry bushes when he was 85 and said, They won't really produce for another 5 years or so.

I could listen to your mum all day she's fascinating and funny...and amazing for 83. I love the setting of her garden in the countryside just gorgeous. My mum is 81 and still an avid gardener but her bad knees restrict her a bit these days. I love hedgehogs it's so nice to see you providing a safe haven for them. Here in NZ they are just considered road kill 😕 I can't wait to get back to Somerset and start a garden in the next couple of years. I will make a hedgehog retreat 😊

OK. I am a 79 year old, very avid gardener. I lift, carry, dig, haul, weed, cut and prune almost every day, and almost throughout the year. I have also filled my trash barrel many hundreds of times over, with refuse, weeds, and all manner of refuse from the garden. But, truly, I have never, even had the inkling of a thought pass my feeble brain about how to reduce the level of refuse in the barrel, by actually climbing in and stomping it down. Now, she is my true hero for innovation and bravery. Living life to its fullest is sometimes living in the edge. Remarkable solution.
some might say she's foolish - but so long as she never gives in to the temptation to do this when there's nobody to catch her if she falls!
@@theflowerfarmer Actually, I wear an Apple Watch that will automatically call an ambulance if I fall and don’t respond that I am ok. I am alone outside, often, and even if I don’t fall, this is a protection I feel I need in case I am in distress of any kind. And, I just admire her for never losing her sense of accomplishment in her own ability. Your mind being young at heart is so important. You still have to be reasonably careful, of course.

I just stumbled upon this video and I’m so glad I did. What brilliant advice by Googie, she certainly knows her stuff. I cannot believe she hopped into the wheelie bin, and made it look so easy! What a delightful tour - I'm 72 and garden in a similar landscaping - Oregon's Willamette Valley.
I'm reminded of grubbing out blackberries, and my grandfather- in law walking over, and taking the grub hoe to do a round - in his mid 80s. He could still do a flip (skin- the- cat) on the rings on the old white oak.
My 12 year old grandson is helping make the new raised beds in our shared garden, and helps empty the compost and gather leaves.
it's good to work with the young to teach them how a garden grows x
Oh my goodness your mom's sense of humor is priceless!!!! 😂 I have been saving this video to watch once I got back home and I am so glad I did. I have a family member who was hospitalized for diabetes and I have not had time to watch until today. Your mom is a delightful person...I enjoy it so much when you visit her. I needed the laugh and smiles that I enjoyed on my face this morning watching this. Mom's garden is so beautiful even when nothing is in bloom. Such a joy...I really wish we could do brush piles for hedgehogs here in America. It's actually illegal to have one here. I think about our Japanese beetle problem here and how possibly hedgehogs could help by eating those grubs in ground or the beetles when they first come up and lay on the surface. I really adore the videos with your mom she is a riot... God bless y'all
