      Thank you! I find winter astonishingly beautiful, but very dependent on the light. I was incredibly lucky to have amazing light for some of those photos - possibly the best winter light I've ever seen in this garden. But some of the time it's just brown and grey with a flat white sky.

    Happy New Year Alexandra from Cheryl in Australia .
    Thank you for all the effort put into this video and all the others for this past year. They have been truly enjoyable. Yes I couldn't agree more about trees. I live in a fairly new estate outside of Brisbane so as you can imagine, not too many trees around other than what was in the park next door and the street plantings.
    I took it upon myself to start planting small trees as soon as I started the garden. Most people's attitude is they are too messy and big. Not so if the size suits your block they are perfect. And messy, come on a real gardener loves all that organic material for compost.
    I am now reaping the benefits as they are growing and providing some shade in very hot summers. There are a few more I plan to put in yet. In summer I can go out into the garden in the shady areas and do something and not be cooked, while I see many houses around me closed up and relying on air conditioning. The garden areas where I have the trees are so much cooler.
    So everybody plant more trees and Happy gardening for 2020.

      @TheMiddlesizedGarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Such a good point. Trees provide brilliant shade insulation for houses as well as shade for gardens. I hope you're clear of the fires - we are all alarmed to see how terrible they are. Happy gardening.

    Many thanks again for sharing your garden through the seasons. Cyclamen is one of those plants that I would not be without. Interesting foliage from fall to mid spring and then late summer flowers with little effort. And they reseed. I’ve added several to the garden this year and was lucky enough recently to find a local nursery with the winter flowering cyclamen coum. These are great for an area of the garden viewed from the house. Slow to establish but well worth having.

You're correct about adding a vertical dimension as I find i'm always looking up at them. They were spectacular in autumn when their leaves were golden yellow. Just Beautiful, Thanks for taking the time to make this video, and give us a list, you are very kind.! Makes me wish I was 20 yrs younger, an just starting a new garden. I'll have my daughter watch this, she's just over the past few yrs gotten into gardening. It must be nice looking out there and seeing such gorgeousness. Is the covered patio where that huge, I believe a rose was accidentally cut down.? What a wonderful place to enjoy on a hot summer day.

    What an amazing video! I loved the first part with so many beautiful photos, obviously taken with love. The trees, the colors, the clouds.... then you went into more specific details. Im in israel and have a tiny garden, so its very different from yours. But the cycalmen really surprised me in your garden! Here they are a protected wildflower. Very timely to watch this video in June in Australia because it is winter here now. I did so enjoy your video and the changes over the seasons. Of course eucalypts are common here, in all varieties. I have three Silver Princess eucalypts which have a weeping habit, beautiful large gumnuts after the pretty pink/red flowers, and which attract the honeyeater birds. At times the bark of the tree is white, hence the name of Silver Princess. I was first attracted to these by seeing them outside the medical clinic with other Australian natives plants and roses. The trees had been pruned to keep them growing lower and more spreading. If i knew how to attach a picture to this message i would send one. Thankyou again for your delightful videos.🇭🇲❄

    • @TheMiddlesizedGarden
      @TheMiddlesizedGarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The gorgeous red leaves are the last few leaves of my Cotinus coggyria 'Grace'. It has been suffering from a virus, so I have reduced the size, but the new growth is healthy and it hung on until the first frosts. The leaves are more purple or dark red in summer and then they change to the glowing colours in autumn.

    I really like seeing your videos. My garden is on an island outside Stockholm, Sweden, so quite a different setting and probably USDA zone 5 (some parts of it maybe 6, or even 7) but because of that shorter growing season, I have really taken an interest in the evergreens we can grow. They make such a valuable addition in the grey winter months.
    One to take a look at is Viburnum rhytidophyllum which is also one of those sort of 70s plants with a bad reputation, but trimmed so it becomes more of a bush than a tree, it looks great.
    Another interesting evergreen is Trochodendron aralioides, which is one of those ancient plants around since the dinosaurs.
    Speaking of ancient plants, there are also quite a few evergreen ferns which gives a completely different structure to the winter garden.

      @@TheMiddlesizedGarden In general the Polystichum family of ferns seems to keep really well, even here with me in zone 5. And they should do great in your, more hospitable, climate. Also they are often beautiful in pots, and to me they blend really well with conifers. That's how our native ferns in Sweden often grow and the two structures match very well.
      Also, many do well in dry shade, so maybe under your leylandii next to the hydrangeas?

    Beautiful in winter as well. I hope the box blight does not arrive there or here. I am south of Paris and have many box plants. I have not seen box at the neighbors' gardens so perhaps I'm isolated enough. I still want you to plant your spiral box somewhere else, but I shall lose that battle. I admire your other topiary plants. Now I regret cutting back my holy bushes rather than sculpting them. The nicest thing in my garden is the flowering jasmine hanging over a fountain. The birch are nice. Happy 2020 to you and yours.

      Thank you and Happy New Year. And you may not ultimately lose the argument over the spiral topiary - but it takes me a very long time to make changes. I am certainly bearing your comments in mind. I'm keeping my fingers crossed with box blight - apparently the key is not to buy new box but to propagate the ones you've got if you want more, and also to make sure nobody prunes your box with anything that has been used on other box plants.

    If you could get a wider lense to capture the majority of the garden, or perhaps at a higher angle. And it would also be lovely to see the monthly differences for the beds. For example... some are not familiar with how cotinus look during the other summer/at flowering and so the contrast with that and the red leaves would be nice. Learn quite a bit, too bad too many varieties are not hardy in my colder region. Looking forward to seeing more of your garden videos.

    Such an enjoyable video! After decades of resisting the fast-growing charm of Leylandii, I bought five a little more than a year ago to make a short length of hedge to cover a bare patch in a wire fence. They are gorgeous with their fresh green and cheerful springiness. I am considering transplanting one to the back of the garden to let it grow taller. Is it possible to keep it at a reasonable height using an extension loppers? As I don't want to resort to using a ladder or a garden service.

    • @TheMiddlesizedGarden
      @TheMiddlesizedGarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. If you cut it regularly to the height you want,then you should be able to go on using loppers. The main thing is not to let it grow too much. If it gets too big, you have to cut it back in a major way, and Leylandii doesn't regrow from old wood so you can get dead patches or an ugly shape. We just cut back the new growth every year (before it gets too thick or woody) and that seems to be successful.

    Wonderful video, Alexandra. Your garden has a fabulous winter presence, and the frost really sets everything off. Lots of great tips in the video. By the way, I bought two tiny Viburnum Bodnantense Dawn in autumn and planted them out in the front garden in out of the way places, where they immediately flowered with that absolutely stunning pink flower. However in early summer I noticed that the leaves were turning red so I moved one of the two plants into the woodland area (it transplanted with ease) where its leaves are now dark green. The other one that remains in the sunny border still has the red autumn coloured foliage. Some of its leaves look a little torn from heat stress. I am not really sure whether this plant is a shade plant or a sun-loving plant - or is it an all-rounder? So far they are each about twelve inches high. How can I make them grow faster or are they just going to grow slowly no matter what I do? I was unable to buy more advanced plants. This variety is extremely hard to get here and I was lucky to find the young ones that I have.

    • @TheMiddlesizedGarden
      @TheMiddlesizedGarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Funnily enough, I've just been looking up photos of my Viburnum bodnantense Dawn for another video, and looking at the leaf colour. Mine is in an exposed East-facing position and probably gets full sun for around 5 hours a day, after which it's shaded by the way the sun goes over the house. Its leaf colour does change over the year - I saw quite a bit of variation as I went through the photos. According to the RHS, it's happy in any aspect, can cope with sun and part shade and isn't too fussy about the soil. But it doesn't seem to grow very fast, and I don't think there's much we can do to change that. It propagates well, and if it's quite hard to find round you, it might be worth propagating it in a year or two. Happy New Year and I hope you're not too close to the fires. The footage we're seeing looks terrible.
